Aura of Good
Darkvision (Ex) Range 60 ft.; Darkvision is the extraordinary ability to see with no light source at all, out to a range specified for the creature. Darkvision is black and white only (colors cannot be discerned). It does not allow characters to see anything that they could not see otherwise-invisible objects are still invisible, and illusions are still visible as what they seem to be. Likewise, darkvision subjects a creature to gaze attacks normally. The presence of light does not spoil darkvision.
Detect Evil (Sp) At will, you can use Detect Evil, as the Spell. You can, as a move action, concentrate on a single individual or item within 60 feet and determine if it is evil, learning the strength of its aura as if having studied it for 3 rounds. While focusing on one individual or object, you do not detect evil in any other object or individual within range.
Fiendish Language (Ex) Tieflings speak either Abyssal or Infernal.
Fiendish Resistance (Ex) Tieflings have cold resistance 5, electricity resistance 5, and fire resistance 5.
Fiendish Sorcery (Ex) Tiefling sorcerers with the Abyssal or Infernal bloodlines treat their Charisma score as 2 points higher for all sorcerer class abilities.
Hedonistic You are a creature of pleasure and comfort. Whenever you spend a day without gaining reward or treasure (at least 10 or more gold pieces) or spending an hour on entertainment or pleasure, attempt a DC 20 Fortitude save at the end of that day. If you fail, you begin the next day fatigued. This fatigue lasts 4 hours, or until you receive a reward or sufficient entertainment or pleasure.
Inner Beauty Once per day, you can manifest your faith in your goddess and gain a +4 trait bonus to a single Bluff, Craft, Diplomacy, or Perform skill check. You can choose to use this trait immediately after making the skill check.
Rakshasa-Spawn Skilled Rakshasa-Spawn tieflings have a +2 racial bonus on Disguise and Sense Motive checks.
Resistance to Cold (Ex) You may ignore 5 points of Cold damage each time you take cold damage.
Resistance to Electricity (Ex) You may ignore 5 points of Electricity damage each time you take electricity damage.
Resistance to Fire (Ex) You may ignore 5 points of Fire damage each time you take fire damage.
Smite Evil (Su) You can call out to the powers of good to aid you in your struggle against evil 1 times per day. As a swift action, you choose one target within sight to smite. If this target is evil, you add +2 to your attack rolls and +1 to all damage rolls made against the target of your smite. If the target of Smite Evil is an outsider with the evil subtype, an evil-aligned dragon, or an undead creature, the bonus to damage on the first successful attack increases to +2. Regardless of the target, Smite Evil attacks automatically bypass any DR the creature might possess. In addition, while smite evil is in effect, you gain a +2 deflection bonus to your AC against attacks made by the target of the smite. If you target a creature that is not evil, the smite is wasted with no effect. The Smite Evil effect remains until the target of the smite is dead or the next time you rest and regain your uses of this ability.
Tough Skin You retain a small amount of your ancestors' unyielding skin. You gain a +1 trait bonus to AC when opponents attempt to confirm critical hits with either bludgeoning or slashing weapons.
As long as she could remember, Velkaria had an unexplainable interest in one deity in particular: Shelyn. Left as an orphan at a temple of the Eternal Rose in Jalmeray, a land where tieflings are treated as untouchables, the Rakshasa-spawn tiefling was raised as an equal by the more open-minded priests of Shelyn. But this alone couldn't explain her deep connection to the faith. Eventually, the priests soon found themselves in trouble with several of the more traditionally-minded local nobles as they were deeply upset that a tiefling would be treated with such tolerance and affection. They demanded that she be tossed out onto the streets with the rest of the untouchables.
Luckily, a half-elven paladin of Shelyn from Taldor named Zatwae Firedown was passing through and took a shine to the young tiefling. She told Velkaria that she was sometimes called the Crusader of the Thorned Rose and that she was on a quest to search the entire world, looking for some way to vanquish all evil and redeem all of Golarion. Velkaria felt drawn to Zatwae, desiring to join her Crusade of the Thorned Rose. While the priests of the temple were reluctant to let her go, for they knew that the tiefling girl would be exposed to a world that viewed her kind with both fear and disgust, the priests knew that there was no other option for they feared angering Thakur Kharswan,of Jalmeray if the upset nobles pressed their case to him. Thus, they allowed a young Velkaria to become Zatwae’s squire. Velkaria traveled far across the sea with Zatwae, learning how to fight and how to wear armor, as well as the ways of a paladin of Shelyn. When the tiefling girl hit puberty, her Rakshasa heritage began to exhibit itself. Orange and white fur with black stripes covered her body, while her fingers and toes grew claw-like fingernails and toenails. Her teeth became fangs, while her ears turned into those like a tiger’s. Her skin also acquired some of the rakshasa’s unyielding skin. However, Velkaria, in addition, developed the hedonistic personality of her fiendish ancestors. Realizing that the beastbrood would have difficulty focusing on becoming a Crusader of the Thorned Rose, the half-elf paladin began to teach Velkaria how to draw and paint, showing her how much entertainment she could get from it, while also using her art to enrich and beautify the world around her. This helped in controlling her hedonism, although it didn’t get rid of it. As time went on, Velkaria soon started to grow into a proper squire.
Then, the torch was passed from knight to squire. While tracking down a band of hobgoblin brigands, one of the bandits thrust a spear at the tiefling, only for Zatwae to catch the attack, fatally wounding her. She had taken the blow so her squire could live. As she died, Zatwae told the beastbrood that it was her turn to carry on the Crusade, just as countless others had done. For the Crusade to continue, the responsibility must be passed on to the squire. With her last bit of strength, she knighted Velkaria, making her a full-fledged paladin of the Eternal Rose and the newest Crusader of the Thorned Rose. Having passed the torch, the half-elf paladin praised the tiefling, saying that she would become a great paladin of Shelyn, before finally passing to be with the goddess in the next life. Velkaria wept as she cremated her mentor’s body. She was 18 years old at the time.
Velkaria wandered the Inner Sea nations, traveling from town to town, city to city. Sometimes she was welcomed, but most of the time, she was looked upon with wariness and disgust, for while people recognize her as a paladin, they wondered if she would fall from grace because of her fiendish blood. Regardless, in her many years after becoming a Crusader of the Thorned Rose, she encountered those who accepted her and even showed her love and affection: a Halfling sculptor in Andoran, a female half-orc potter in Lastwall, a young human noblewoman in Taldor, and a dwarven poet moonlighting as a tavern serving wrench in Varisia. While the tiefling wanted to stay, her oath to the Crusade of the Thorned Rose came first, and while saddened, her lovers acknowledged and gave her their blessings. Each of these women Velkaria drew portraits in a sketchbook she carries with her. While they have moved on with their lives, each of them holds a special place in the tiefling’s heart.
It was after becoming a paladin of Shelyn that Velkaira would often have dreams of Shelyn visiting her, often in the form of the goddess’s sacred animal, giving her guidance and advice when the beastbrood was at her lowest. Somehow, the presence of the Eternal Rose in her dreams gave her the strength to banish doubt and carry on the Thorned Rose Crusade. Even before she became a knight, she had always felt calm and at ease in places holy to Shelyn. Zatwae always said that Velkaria was surely blessed by the goddess. It was while she was guarding a group of Shelynite pilgrims through Mendev that she was told of the coming festival of Armasse. It so happened that she and the pilgrims were both headed to the city of Kenabres. As she entered the city, she thought she spotted a white songbird with a multicolored tail perched on a tree looking at her…
Velkaria appears to be a female Rakshasa-spawn, or beastbrood, tiefling, but she is actually a hermaphrodite. She possesses the best features of a Taldan woman and a Vudrani woman, combining them all to give her an exotic and beautiful appearance. Her lean body is covered in the fur of a tiger, with black stripes marking her orange and white fur. Her catlike blue eyes have silver flecks in them, and she has chestnut brown hair that slightly covers her left eye. She is left-handed, and also possesses catlike furry ears on her head and sharp tiger-like fangs in her mouth.
Velkaria is a bit different from what may suspect from a paladin. She is relaxed, and enjoys engaging in witty conversation, tending to act flirty and quick to joke and laugh with others. This is because she has come to see that she must take only the Crusade of the Thorned Rose seriously. Though this doesn't mean she will abandon friends and the helpless to evil and or danger. She makes no attempt to hide her mission or presence, and she speaks openly about her noble quest should anyone be brave enough to ask her about it, which she is more than happy to answer. She possesses an unshakeable confidence in not only her abilities, but those around her as well. She does not point out the faults of others unless she uses them to help a person lift themselves up and only then as a last resort. She is an empathic person, filled with understanding and tolerance of the faults and flaws of others. To her, everyone has a flaw, but we must all strive to rise above that flaw to better ourselves and the world around us.
She is a bit hedonistic due to her fiendish heritage, but her love of the arts seems to be able to help Velkaria in controlling her hedonism, although it does show from time to time.
Like all knights of Shelyn, she is diplomatic and tries to resolve things without always resorting to violence and bloodshed. She takes her oath to the Eternal Rose’s Code as well as the Oath of the Thorned Rose’s Crusade very seriously.
The Truth about Velkaria's Birth:
Velkaria's birth is quite unusual. When her mother was pregnant with her, the goddess Shelyn was visiting the local festival of Yolarati, known as the Festival of Colors, when she sensed a sinister presence. It belonged to the spirit of a powerful rakshasa. Rakshasas are able to take over an unborn child and replace its soul with that of the rakshasa's, thereby reincarnating itself. Shelyn, taking offense to this, would not allow this fiendish reincarnation to take place. In order to save the unborn child, the goddess possessed the pregnant mother.
Shelyn's divine light overwhelmed and destroyed the evil spirit. In its death throes, the rakshasa cursed the child. While the child would be born a tiefling, Shelyn knew that the child's soul was safe. However, before Shelyn could vacate the mortal woman's body, the girl was born, making Shelyn the child's mother. The girl's earthly father and mother were shocked by the fact that their newborn daughter was a tielfing (not to mention a hermaphrodite as well), and not wanting to raise a child touched by the rakshasas, left her on the steps of a local temple dedicated to the Eternal Rose.
The goddess, concerned for her newborn godling daughter, discovered that the child had been abandoned at one of her temples. Using her animal form, she caused a ruckus, tricking her clerics into opening the temple doors and discovering the baby girl. The priests named her Velkaria, which was a combination of the Vudrani name Velk and the Taldan name Karia. Since her birth, Shelyn has watched over Velkaria.
