It is missing one thing for an assassin, Alignment restriction. In theory, the Stygian Slayer could be Lawful Good.

The Assassin PRC at least says the character has the be an evil alignment.

I see the lack of alignment rescriction as a perk.

I would think so, it might take a bit but it seems like like this is the exact sort of thing Prestidigitation would be used for.

If you wanting to cast Arcane spells and sneak around around, I would suggest Bard, either straight Bard or Archaeologist, depending on whether trap finding or team buffing is more important to you. The Bard is a very versatile class, it can support the team in a variety of ways and it is not reliant on any one strategy.

A lot of it depends on what type of versatility you value and how proactive the party is. The Wizard excels when you can plan out what your doing or when the campaign takes dramatic changes in scope or direction. If it turns out that the Campaign is going to take place on the Elemental Plane of Fire starting tomorrow, the Wizard is good with it. When a demon shows up in with a horde of undead? The Sorc is probably in a better position. A lot also depends what sources are open.

5 people marked this as a favorite.

Avh speaks truth. I do think the Synthesis could be salvaged if it provided modifiers to physical stats instead of replacing the casters own.

I imagine the fact that so many people play it wrong likely has a lot to do with it. It is also viewed as being over powered by many people for it's ability to dump all the physical stats, and the evolution you can get might be kinda disgusting on your character as opposed to the eidolon.

To me monks have a separate set of issues from rogues and fighters.

Ok since there seems to be some confusion going around, did the person who player-killer walk and join your new group or not?

Beyond that, here is my suggestion. Insist on point-buy but offer to do 20 or 25 pt. This means it is a bit less of a jump powerwise for the players. Insist on new characters(although eb open to the idea of recreating characters at the new pt buy lvl) at a level you decide, 1 is traditional but 2 and 3 also have a lot to recommend.

While you don't have to allow the same sources of course, what sources did the old DM allow?

My first instinct is too ask your DM for a one handed long spear as an Exotic weapon.

I'm thinking there should be a 9th level maneuver called Triumphant Howl of the Devil Tiger.

Apologies if this was brought up but I missed it, but what was the reasoning behind changing the discipline names from devil tiger to primary fury?

I guess the minutes part of the study didn't register in my head. That changes things considerably. Combine that with waiting to 6 for an actual kill effect and that takes care of my objections on that front.

On the issues of Orders and cant, it's more of the fact that they are practically mandated. I mean rogues aren't mechanically mandated to be in guilds. I can certainly see that many beguilers would join thieves guilds(seems that could be a very profitable relationship for both parties). Both the Beguiler and the Duskblade were kinda unique in being spontaneous INT casters in 3.5

I'm having mixed feelings about the Orders for a couple reasons. One, while I admit to not having read all of them in depth, 1st level death attacks raise red flags with me. Also the choices for each order seem a bit random and without a clear guiding principle. Finally, while I get that the orders are there to provide the player with ways to customize his character, the combination of the Cant and the order codes of conduct and alignment restrictions seems to imply a degree of structure that seems inappropriate to the class.

Since each school does have it's own favored weapons, I would actually like to see them be well integrated into the powers. In ToB, a lot of them seems kinda random and like their wasn't any real reason you would want to use the favored weapons. Or they were blatantly arbitrary.

Is each disciplin going to have it's own favored weapons and or skill?

Looking forward to seeing how this comes out.

Hmm, one of the major selling points of the 3.5 class was the fact that it got it's entire list as spells known. This was balanced by the fact that it had a really focused list. Also update the list of when are gained to include when upgrades to abilities or more uses per day are gained. Light armor is admittedly quite nice to have, but the martial weapon is honestly kinda just gravy, and Det magic and read magic are really hard to justify as 1st level spells.

Beyond the fact the 3.5 version lacked, is their any reason why dread necro's should get cantrips? They are a full spell progress, 9th spell level caster. The lack of the summon dead spells seem to be major hole in their low level casting. Also they learn spells like sorcs do but have a really small list. The 3.5 dread necro learned all there spells automatically. As it it's using this werid hybrid of Wizard and Sorc casting.

I'm thinking Lich's touch shouldn't offer a saving throw. As it stands given that it has limited uses per day, requires a melee touch attack or casting a spell, and the dmg 1d6/2 levels i just don't think it is a needed drawback.

I don't really see any issues with allowing a NG Monk. Heck is 3.5 the stated reasons why Ember the LN monk and Mialee TN wizards were their given alignments seems like the exact same thing! I guess this allows someone to be a monk/bard or monk barbarian or a monk/druid thats not LN. However, I'm not seeing an issue here.

Seems like there are couple issues here. There is question of both alignment and of the Order's code and these are both separate issues that should not be confused. Their is also the of the interpretation of the Order's edicts. Perhaps the player should get a new order that he will be better able to roleplay.

Also, the Law/Chaos axis of alignment is not very helpful and is all over the place.

What is this archers build? AKA stats, feats and relevant items.Rich parents is a waste of the trait if your playing for more then a level 1 one shot. Which version of favored son is being used, the Ameikio one or the Belor one? Also that fact that he did not allow traits in his game is irrelevant to what he picked in your game. What are the rest of the players playing?

Out of curiosity what level are you and how many encounters do you normally have between rests?

Ouch, I really for your monk player. I once played a Kobold Monk myself during 3.5. I had a lot of fun, man did it feel like i was fighting to keep my head above water. That said lots of good advice given out. One thought i had was perhaps a mighty fist wraps sort of item. Price them as a magic weapon with the appropriate value in enhancement values.
