Wait, did I die?

As I mentioned I was busy with real life stuff and couldn't get around to post.. but if I died, then poo. I've posted in my other campaigns that I'm back and can post again (tomorrow night after work in particular). I.. really need to catch up.

I want to apologize for my silence, my mother and I found out our a!&!**+ apartment managers are upping our monthly rent after our lease is up by nearly 25% (the f$&@?) and we've been trying to find a new place to move to.

Its seriously bullshit that this shitty ass, 1 bedroom apartment is worth over $700/month for the shitty management, shitty maintenance, and shitty neighbors with their shitty drinking problems and shitty music.

Apologies, I'm in a bad mood. Anyways, we're looking for a new place to move to so I might be delayed in posting a bit. Trying to keep up but you guys just post like crazy while I'm at work or asleep with a fever >.>

Theodric remains stoic as Vale is brutally murdered in front of him. Even when his cousin despairs, Theodric knows that they can, if they must, resurrect him at a later date. For now, he has served his purpose. He pulls out a pinch of bat guano and begins making another set of arcane gestures. ”Ожог, обжарить, Ожог, умереть в огненный шар!“ he yells and points at the group of ogres before him. A woosh of hot air ignites into a massive fireball that engulfs the ogres, burning flesh and searing skin.

”Well, it worked for a bit. Hold off these two ogres Vale! I have an idea! Plug your ears!” No longer focusing on his illusion, he instead, with his free hand, pulls out a small bit of fur and a glass rod. He speaks loudly the words of power for his spell and the material components dissolve as part of the casting. ”Хруст, Гром, Arc от моего пальца, я вызываю тебя, Молния!” From his outstretched gauntlet a bolt of lightning appears, its thunderous crack echoing in the mountains. The lightning bolt hits most of the ogres assembled near the bridge and the two that were engaged with Vale, burning their skin and causing their hair to raise.

He then retreats in order to gain range for his next move, leaving Vale in range of the remaining ogres.

”This is probably going to get rough real fast Vale. Hope you’re ready,” Theodric moves his illusionary army forward more, right until the front troops reach the edge of the bridge. Although primarily concentrating on keeping them looking real, he mentally brings a different spell to mind as he prepares himself for the upcoming melee.

”Come and get us, Ogre filth! Unless you think you can’t handle us except from behind the safety of your bridge!”

Theodric continues to have his troops march forward, keeping a slow but steady pace to not only allow him to concentrate, but to allow his troops to seem as if cautiously approaching at a defensive stance, their shields raise and their spears pointed forward.

”Видеть. Услышь . Чувствовать. Запах. Скрыть реальное и обмануть ум . Основные изображения .” Theodric, standing a ways from the fort along the road leading to it, begins chanting a spell. Around him, thirty-two soldiers in full plate mail wielding longspears appear in groups of four, silently waiting his orders. Theodric concentrates and rearranges a few of them to include a pair of drummers near the back. Satisfied with his illusion, he nods to himself.

He has the two drummers in the back begin playing, their drums of war heralding his approach and hopefully causing dread in the ogres, although he figures this is unlikely. As their beats grow louder, begins to force his illusionary army to march forward along the road at a steady pace.

A minute later as he approaches the fort, it comes into view; he has one of his soldiers in the rear blow a loud war horn to go with the drums, and his illusionary soldiers appear grim and stoic in face of the enemy.

Alright chums, let’s do this! Theodric draws his longspear, though is forced to continue concentrating on his illusions to ensure their realism.

“Would that suit us or the ogres better? The foul weather might conceal our approach, but it feels a bit of a grim omen considering Riley’s reports of the Fort.”

Granted it's not a flat out declaration not to attack in the storm, but I did raise some doubts three days ago :-) :-p

To be honest I don't really mind what we do. Better weather would be safer and more sensible, but I kind of dig the cinematics of attacking to the backdrop of a gathering storm and I also appreciate the effort our beloved DM has put in.

I think fighting a bunch of ogres in a thunderstorm would end up being an awesome, memorable encounter. Thus another reason why I say we go for it.

Jakardos:
”Your cousin,” Marcellano states matter-of-factly. ”Distantly related, as it were, and I don’t share the same last name. Do you know of the Rothnts, back in Cheliax? I came here due to.. well, let’s just say I’m no longer welcome at home due to political reasons. Needed a new life, knew of a distant cousin in Varisia so I sought you out and eventually decided to join your little band. Looks like that last bit probably isn’t going to happen now though, eh?”

Later, discussing tactics

Theodric stands and listens quietly, making sure not to miss anything that was said about the intel. After Riley finished speaking, he pipes in. ”Curious as to why the ogres would only put a single guard at the eastern gate. Almost makes me think a trap of some sort.. but they’re ogres. Regardless, I’d rather hit them where they’re most concentrated and keep them distracted long enough for Eugeni to shoot them and Riley to blast them. So I’ll move in from the south with my little army of illusions - I can create a troop of roughly thirty-two soldiers. Those in the sky should first focus their fire on the ogres on the walls - after those are taken care of, the Black Arrows can move in, scale the wall, and rain arrows from the high ground. I’ll keep anyone in the courtyard busy for as long as I can - if the illusions fall short for whatever reason, I have ways to keep myself alive.”

After the group’s plans are made for the night, Theodric settles down inside of his tent and begins to study the spellbook that they recovered from from Mammy, using liberal castings of Read Magic to do so as necessary to read every spell in Mammy’s book. Those going to bed early can hear him occasionally speak the same words from within his tent every few minutes for a few hours. Later in the night, after he’s fully studied the book, he casts Bed of Iron and heads to sleep.

Arcane Failure Chance for Bed of Iron: 1d100 ⇒ 81 (Success)

The next morning, Theodric wakes up and, after going outside to take a quick leak, heads back into his tent. Those who notice when he wakes up notice that he is still wearing his suit of full plate - he apparently slept in it, yet seems well rested regardless. Before he heads back into his tent, he lets anyone watching him know he isn’t to be disturbed for an hour.

Roughly an hour and a half later, he exits his tent and begins packing up everything into his Bag of Holding, apparently eating no breakfast.

Once I find out what spells are in Mammy’s spellbook I’ll decide what to prepare. In addition, he eats his meagre breakfast of trail rations while within his tent, alone, and doesn’t come out until he’s finished.

Theodric scoffs, Rightful inheritance? Never mentioned it as such. I was just picking out loot that I’d like to claim. We did all agree on an equal share of loot, did we not? Of course my cousin can have his bow back since he’s alive.” With that, he unhooks the longbow and tosses it to Jakardos. ”Didn’t have any arrows anyways. As for being a Hellknight, well.. that is a long story. Needless to say, my former affiliation isn’t something that will come as a bother to anyone here, I assure you. I simply continue wearing the armor and prefer to keep its visage hidden to avoid scaring off the locals and causing undue disturbances. I’ve heard Hellknights aren’t particularly well received in the frontier past Korvosa.”

He shrugs at Setsuna’s accusations and aggressive demeanor. ”Anyways, I’m not surprised he hasn’t heard of me - when I said distantly related, I meant it. I only knew of him because my family kept a fairly good record of our relatives.”

”As for the wands we found..” Theodric changes the subject, ”It appears that Femur allows casting of Magic Missile, the Humerus Ray of Enfeeblement, and the arm contains magic for Vampiric Touch. If no one wishes to use the admittedly-grisly wands, I’ll be more than willing to do so, as such tokens don’t bother me. At the very least, I will be holding on to the book.”

Back previously when Setsuna said she wasn't going to appraise anything:

"Now hold on there, Setsuna, one doesn't simply discard resources when they're presented to you. Made of.. questionable materials or not, they could come in handy. Plus, you aren't the only one who can inspect such items. I’ve learned a thing or two about magic items from my adventuring days." Theodric collects all of the grisly tokens, including the potion and spellbook, and lays them out separately from one another on a flat surface. With the items laid bare, Theoric takes one gauntleted hand and makes a few swift arcane gestures. Раскрываем свои секреты! Обнаружение магии! he speaks with a strong, clear voice and suddenly, a glimmer of magic outlines his helmet’s eye slits, revealing that his eyes are glowing azure. He takes a few moments focus his concentration on the magic items laying in front of him, inspecting each one in turn before the magic fades and he reveals what each one does.

To make sure he didn’t miss anything, he repeats the incantation, but the magic seems to fizzle around him. He swears to himself and repeats the gesture, this time his eyes glowing blue again - and he quickly sweeps the house, searching for any signs of lingering magical auras.

Afterwards, he stands near the back, inspecting the trio that they rescued. Instead of going to introduce himself, however, he simply nods at Eugeni’s suggestion. ”I believe we could all use some rest right now, camping is not a bad idea. I’ll get my own tent set up.”

He shakes his head at seeing the gruesome centerpiece. "It really is good that we're putting these.. these inhumane beasts down. Anyone ah.. recognize anyone?" He looks at Shalelu to see if she appears to make any recognition to the human head on the table.

Without further arguement, Theodric takes the bow and hooks it onto his backpack for safe keeping.

He then picks up the longspear and hefts it in a battlestance, testing it with a few quick jabs. With his greatsword sheathed, he keeps the spear handy, to be used safely behind the front lines.

Magic items are important and all, but if we get caught with our pants down while drooling over them then we might not get the chance to use them." Because its grappling Mory, it can’t take Attacks of Opportunity - unless it doesn’t have the grappled condition for whatever reason, which I really hope isn’t the case.

Houstin.. we have a problem.

Dismissing a spell is a standard action that requires me to speak a modified version of the verbal component of a spell (or just a gesture if it had no verbal components).

Luckly Gaseous Form does not have a verbal component, as I just confirmed. I really really need to pay better attention to the components of spells instead of assuming they all have V and S.

Oooh crap on a stick I forgot that scrolls are subject to arcane spell failure chance due to armor. First time ever playing a character with an arcane spell failure chance due to armor! Do note that I would take a Swift Action before casting the scroll to use Arcane Armor Mastery to reduce the chance to 15%.

Arcane Spell Failure Roll: 1d100 ⇒ 19

..barely succeeded.

Theodric looks at the startled halfling with annoyance, then sighs. ”Its a long story, and its probably best that we don’t discuss it here. If you insist, I’ll tell it to you at a later date. For now, let us focus on the task at hand.”

He is startled when the floor opens up and drops the cat and Shalelu down the spiked pit - but nothing startles him more than to see Eugeni jump in after them on his own accord. He steps forward, one hand clasping Zoli’s head, using her as leverage as he leans carefully over the pit.”You idiot, do you want to share their fate?” he yells down the pipe. ”Damned fool. Well we can’t just let them die now can we? I’ll go check to see what's down there.”

He sheathes his greatsword and reaches behind him into his worn backpack, easily finding what he needs right on top: A rolled up scroll with a black ribbon tying it shut. He undoes the ribbon and unfurls the scroll. Holding up in front of him, he speaks the words of power in the spidery language of magic, and the arcane writing on the parchment begins to glow. As he finishes, the writing glows brightly for a moment before fading entirely; his body begins to take on a smoke-like texture and he quickly becomes nothing more than a gaseous cloud of vapor.

In his new form, he floats down and heads into the pipe, the jagged spikes meaning nothing to his insubstantial body.

Theodric looks at Zoli as she asks her question about his wand. His plated visage stares at her for a good and awkward ten seconds in silence, before he nods and brings out his wand to tap her with. He then slides the wand back into his wrist sheathe.

"I appreciate the offer for healing, but for now I'm fine. This wound is just a flesh wound - and those are easy enough to fix." Theodric sounds a bit pained as his wound smokes and sizzles as it heals. Nevertheless, he remains stoic and follows the group in Zoli's recommended marching order, his sword drawn.

Marching Order looks fine by me. Theodric would have his sword out as we moved forward.

"I do not. Nor Aquan or Aklo. However, I am able to heal my own wounds - although slowly." At that, he jabs his iron stick into his wound and says a command word. Slowly, his wound begins to close, giving off a light smell of sulfur in the process.

Hit myself up with a charge of Infernal Healing from my wand. If we're willing to wait two minutes, I'd like to heal myself to almost full with a second charge - if not, one will suffice.

"Argh you son of a-" Theodric reels in pain from the monstrosity's attack, before retaliating with his own attack. He grips his greatsword in two hands and strikes with all of his might at the brute, connecting blade to flesh, complete with his own bloody rain to match.

Then, after he strikes, he steps back and draws out a black iron stick with a blood-red tip.

Was exhausted after work, fell asleep for 4 hours immediately upon getting home.

As his new allies take down the rest of the dogs, Theodric focuses his attention on the last dog standing. He brings his greatsword above his head and brings it down upon the hound's head.

"I suppose if you put it that way.. Riley is it? Then it makes sense. I was unaware that you were actually able to speak to the thing, thus get any information from it. Figured you had just wanted to save the damn thing from its fate." Theodric jogs up to the group and takes his place in the front, his armor clanking as he does so, and draws his massive greatsword in preparation for whatever approaches.

Zoli Earlier:
"Mhm, as it so happens finding work on your own gets tiring quickly. I'd rather have someone to join and work with than simply taking odd jobs alone all the time. " He completely avoids the question of what caused him to seek his cousin out.

@Zoli Earlier:
"Brother? No, the man isn't my brother. My brothers are useless cretins. No, I've actually never met my cousin - he's distantly related as it were, but I've heard somewhat of his exploits and came here in search of him to join him."

Zoli, I'm gonna send you a message (or just post here in a spoiler) regarding a reply to your question. It'll have to be tomorrow though during my day off.

Theodric sighs, "Why do you all care so much about an animal? They live and die out here in the wilderness - its just what they do. Does this really require our attention?" Theodric hangs back as a result, watching as everyone gets riled up over some injured animal. He signs again and folds his arms to wait out what he thinks is a waste of time. "We really do have better things to be worrying about - such as the missing Black Arrows."

Theodric takes note of Shalelu's gasp when he mentions his cousin. Although not visible beneath his helmet, one of his eyebrows is raised as he studies the elf.

After a few seconds of silence as he watches Shalelu, he turns and responds to Setsuna. "I had originally intended to seek out the Black Arrows myself - but now that I've learned about the recent troubles, it would indeed be best to have company. Ogres do not scare me, as I have ways to outwit them, but nevertheless it isn't a bad idea. I accept - although I will want an equal share of anything we find should we encounter trouble. "

As he speaks he looks at each member of the group, his steely gaze causing goose bumps to arrise on some of the members' necks. A halfling who looks to be better as bait than an ally in a fight, some sort of.. wild-man , a half-breed who says she's the group's healer, an elf who looks like she can handle herself, a brawny orc thus far silent who's probably as slow in the head as the aforementioned ogres, and a.. is that a dhampir? Well they're not ideal but I suppose that they'll do.

"Shall we? Best not to linger. I would rather find out if my cousin still lives sooner rather than later."

"Perhaps its the tale of these so-called 'flying snake women'," Theodric sneers. Although his helmeted head turns just slightly in recognition of Riley's outstretched hand, he makes no effort to return the handshake. "Such monstrous creatures would indeed likely scare a few bunnies towards the town and worry the locals. Ogres and trolls, meanwhile, would likely be a more credible threat - if whatever information the elf heard was true and not simple rumormongering. Either way, neither sound particularly worrisome."

"Name's Marcellano Kain, a sellsword from Korvosa."

Theodric snorts at the halfling's piping voice as she proclaims the group's heroic deeds and their search for flying snake women. "Varisian Rangers? Never heard of them. Though if you are here to seek out the Black Arrows as I am, then it appears we have a common goal. I can't say the same about looking for flying snake women, though." The Skinsaw Cultists must have been a ragtag group of nobodies if this group took them out. Nevertheless, at least they are no friends to such heretics.

He looks back at Maelin after speaking to Zoli and eerily but silently staring in her direction for a few short moments. "Just point us in the direction to where the Black arrows are located, then. If communication with them has gone dark, then it would not be unlikely that us solving that issue might solve whatever else plagues this town. Regardless, my main intention is finding the Black Arrows and my cousin, a man that goes by the name Jakardos Sovark."
