Shadowdark

Given the massive attrition rate on the boards, I have found interest should exceed two times the amount of spaces you plan on in your game at least. I made this paladin for an OSR that didnt last very long at all.

Half of players tend to drop the first month unless you get people with solid posting histories and the odds are better, and this is if you are running a mainstream, popular game like Pathfinder Kingmaker. Niche games are much harder to keep going in my experience. Many OSRs on these boards have either never started or stopped in the first month. To be fair, the flake rate of GMs for OSRs is much higher than the players lately.

If someone else wants to run any old school module or homebrew count me in. I'll roll my 3d6s now.

Very accurate statement

Hey, it happens.

But let's be optimistic.

Not going anywhere - take care

And Adam is 100% right, some need complex rules to make vibrant characters. But we all know you don’t need anything , just imagination, to make a vibrant character.

I will also repeat my post in the controversial old school vs new school thread. I think those of us who remember AD&D can agree that things have changed in the move to Pathfinder, most of them good. I have no problem with this being more old school flavor, and I have no problem having to create a "backup character".

There are a few absolutes I can definitely point out in Old School vs New School. I almost imagine George Carlin doing this like his football versus baseball comparison.
New School = character death extremely rare Old school = common to frequent depending on DM
New School = All magic items are available, don't mess with my build progression Old school = magic items rare and typically not for sale
New School = Traps are never lethal Old school = traps were dangerous and could kill
New school = Encounters are always balanced Old school = running was sometimes the best option
New school = Characters figure things out with the appropriate skill or knowledge roll Old school = Players had to figure things out--characters could not make a skill roll to solve a riddle

The styles are different. My great grandma said she like black and white TV because it looked more realistic. I realize the 3.x D&D shell is better than the old AD&D shell.

As for fourth and fifth edition, color me unconvinced.

Studley will be enthusiastic and personable with an incredible work ethic — think Sponge Bob SquarePants in a fantasy world. His 6 wisdom may be similar to Spongebob’s and as our mage pointed out naive.

Sometimes you had to read the text in the big boxes. Totally fine

”More than fair!! Can you recommend a place to stay?? We can leave on the morrow. Is the common room safe or should we get private accommodations? A good map would be helpful—this place sounds hard to find.”

Studley listens to Geoffrey intently.

The young armored knight turns to intercede in the verbal confrontation and addresses the halfling.

“Let us respect our elders. Especially when they are very old. We need to meet this man Geoffrey.”

The young man walks up to the spearman with a disarming smile.
”Do you use the interlocked grip or the widely spaced one??”
He leans closer and drops his voice as if sharing a secret.
”I kept dropping it with the interlocked grip.”

The young man confidently rushes with a loud clanking of armor to lead the group headed to this Geoffrey.
I should consult the local authorities — I bet he doesn’t like to be called Jeff

As he walks with those singled out he turns and says with a loud conspiratorial whisper ”Work, shucks no, I am looking for adventure!!

The heavily armed man seemed uncomfortable in his gleaming silver white plate mail as he struggled to be noticed by the guardsmen. Humping all his equipment including a large metal shield slung over his back had definitely slowed him down.

I don’t think they are in trouble

Black Dow so good to see you again. I miss DM Grimmy!!

Studley is too slow to parry, but could afford to get plate and shield, so that is a plus!!

Anyone remember when attrition was high enough a character who rolled badly but got a good gold roll could look forward to his buddies getting good equipment after his death. A common tactic in our group was rolling up a brother and guilting others to let you have the last characters stuff. Fond memories!!

Don't tell anyone, but begging can get you in at the last minute.

I will be trying to be a paladin if the rolls work out. Plan is to put the +5 on charisma out of respect to the legacy importance of Charisma in AD&D and rolling in the order I did as a kid for luck. I forgot how fun rolling characters is after so much point buy!!

STR: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 6) + 6 = 13
INT: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 2) + 3 = 9
WIS: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 1) + 3 = 6
DEX: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 1) + 3 = 9
CON: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 5) + 4 = 14
CHA: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 2) + 5 = 10

Not the best of stats, but I am just glad to be on the team!! At least I qualify for an experience bonus.

gold: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5) = 14
