I would commit obscene amounts of money toward the crowd funding of this most excellent sounding game. A Numerian companion and/or campaign setting would be a perfect primer for this genre of project. Count me in.

James Jacobs wrote:

Well, they exist in a very real sense as treasure in Night of Frozen Shadows. That's why I asked.

None of my questions are meant to bother you or waste your time. I ask because my group wants me to ask 'the man', whose adventures we have had the pleasure of killing our characters in, over the last decade.

Anyway, thanks for your time in answering my very real, but apparently trivial questions.

James Jacobs wrote:
that type of micromanagement has NEVER, in my nearly 30 years of gaming experience, made a game more fun. It has almost ALWAYS made the game more annoying.

Okay, annoying role playing situations aside, how widely accepted are trade bars in Golarion? Are they accepted in large cities only or in specific nations?

James,

In Golarion, when the spell Lower Water is cast, are the affected water molecules compressed to take up less space, is the water temporarily displaced to some pocket dimension, does it simply lower the water table in the affected area and raise it elsewhere to compensate, or is it teleported to fill the toilets at Paizo?

Also, continuing our conversation with regards to the value of currency in Golarion, is there a mark-up for the standard exchange rate of copper to silver, silver to gold, or gold to platinum? In other words, is it typical for moneychangers/banks to charge a percentage or flat fee for exchanging one type of metal coin for another?

Awesome, thanks for the reply!

Is a set list of Heroes and Monsters available yet?

Didn't see that anywhere, but thanks for the information.

Again, has it been announced if WizKids will be releasing follow ups to the Beginner Box Heroes Miniatures Set, featuring more of the iconic Pathfinder characters or are those only going to be available from Reaper?

James,

Will there be an updated set of RotR Gamemastery Item Cards to go along with the 'RotR' anniversary release?

Also, will the Eel's Skull and/or the Temple of The Ravenous Moon dungeon sites be featured in the S&S AP?

Erik,

Are there any plans to release the non-counter contents of the Pathfinder Beginner Box in PDF?

What about releasing follow ups to the Beginner Box Heroes Miniatures Set, featuring more of the iconic Pathfinder characters?

If the special effects are imaginative and cool... I don't care HOW they make them

I agree, it's the end product that counts, but there is something to be said for the bleeding edge of prop animatronics and fx make-up pioneered during the '80's and '90's by such greats as Stan Winston and Tom Savini. I only despise the use of CGI to save money at the cost of quality. Case in point: Compare the Jabba the Hutt animatronic used in RoTJ with any of the CGI Jabbas from the prequels (or the horrid special-edition ANH) and you can see the the RoTJ Jabba looks like a living thing, while the prequel Jabbas look like a good console video game. Do you agree? Though, CGI gems like the aliens and technology featured in District 9 as well as that 1st scene in the original Jurassic Park with the T-Rex, will always stand the the test of time.

James Jacobs wrote:
and I prefer Dawn of the Dead over NotLD

Ah, the scenes of biker-trash ripping the jewelry off a zombie woman and hitting zombies in their faces with pies will be with me forever. Don't get me started on how they pulled off the scene with the zombie getting scalped by the helicopter rotor...

Btw, have you seen the deleted/alternate ending of Carpenter's remake of The Thing?

James Jacobs wrote:
I'm sure I'll leave one or ten off by accident, but here goes, in no particular order: Alien, The Thing, The Exorcist, Psycho, Blair Witch Project, Jaws, Halloween, Hellraiser, The Ring, and Dawn of the Dead (1978).

James, are you excited or appalled by the imminent release of the prequel to The Thing? Apparently, John Carpenter gave them his blessing as they production crew supposedly recreated the Norwegian camp piece by piece from the 1982 film, going so far as to use predominantly animatronics and practical effects as opposed to CGI.

Also, how do you feel about Tom Savini's redux of Night of the Living Dead from the early 90's? The special effects make-up is far superior to the original, and I felt making the female lead a stronger character was a good update.

James Jacobs wrote:
Looking at it top-down, you'd see the Tenebrous River perhaps carving a triple "S" shape through that level, with caves all over the place wherever the river DOESN'T flow. And some of those caves have tunnels that go deeper into the ground.

James, thanks for the info and once again, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer my incessant ramblings. Looks like you'll be getting a painted copy of both Maralee and The Harbinger from the AoW at the next Paizocon (don't worry, I've got plenty of extras).

James Jacobs wrote:
NONE of the side view maps of the dungeons in that book should have scales at all, because none of hte side view ones are TO scale. They're merely representational of how the dungeons are all laid out.

So James, if the map of the Candlestone Caverns is a side-view map, how does the Tenebros River pass through the Thundering Gate without spilling into the levels below? Viewing the Caverns from a side-view perspective, there isn't a waterfall indicated at the Thundering Gap and the river seems to 'jump' over the passage leading down to Level 15 and continue on to the fork in the Tenebros River toward Kaldrifjaur Lake.

James,

I have found a map scale issue with the Candlestone Caverns mega-dungeon in the Dungeons of Golarion Campaign Setting and wanted your input as to what the correct scale should be.

According to the map scale on page 6 of DoG, each grid square for the Candlestone Caverns is equal to 10 feet. This cannot be the case.

The Pathfinder Society Scenario #37-'The Beggar's Pearl', describes Level 2 of the Candlestone Caverns in detail and the dungeon parameters measured from the Entrance to the Mushroom Caves indicates that The Hall of Wonders should be about 250 feet long by about 155 feet wide, not counting the 2nd floor.

So unless the 11 encounters featured on the 1st floor of 'Beggar's' Hall of Wonders are supposed to take place in what looks in DoG like area about 10 feet x 5 feet, the scale is incorrect.

James,

At Gen Con you explained that 'surfaces' onto which a Symbol of Death, Fear, etc. could be drawn onto did not include flesh (so, no bare-chested Monks with Symbols of Death tattooed on them). What about armor or shields, such as a breast plate or a tower shield?

Also, since many golems are created from base materials that could also be a surface (i.e. stone or glass), could a golem have a Symbol drawn onto it?

Finally, if a character within 60 feet of a hidden or covered Symbol cast Detect Magic and waited the three rounds to fully discern the properties of the Symbol, would the aura of the Symbol appear as an outline or highlight of the Symbol itself, thereby exposing the caster to the effects of the Symbol? Am I correct in assuming that auras generated by Detect Magic outline or highlight the creature or item that is radiating the magical signature, so a magic dagger looks like a glowing dagger or dagger-shape, etc.?

James,

In Golarion, when applied to standard damage wounds (i.e not from debilitating curses, diseases, or special damage attacks) does healing magic (whether from spells or items) leave scarring after the wound is healed?

What about Fast Healing or alchemical items?

Can we expect a Gamemastery Item Card release for Ultimate Equipment or have you guys pretty much decided to stick with the 'Adventure Path only Item Cards' formula?

James Jacobs wrote:

"The Shattered Star" AP, is set entirely in Varisia. Which is also the region that Kare Maga is set.

Just sayin'.

YES!

James, some Golarion specific questions for you:

1) Is the rate of expansion of The Worldwound measurable or is it too gradual of a change to notice (i.e. in a geologic timescale)?

2) Is the 'corruption' of the Sarkora River diluted when it merges with the West Sellen River, or do the contaminants continue downstream into Numeria?

3) In terms of game mechanics, are there specific diseases or curses that can be contracted when coming into contact with the Sarkora or the West Sellen Rivers?

4) Am I correct in assuming that the standardization of coinage as the accepted form of exchange and buying power for the Inner Sea region is backed by the value of the metal in the coins themselves? If so, what is to keep spellcasters from 'creating' more coins (i.e. lead into gold), thereby driving a steady rate of inflation?

I'm not sure updates for "Wormcrawl" to Pathfinder exist, so I can't really help you there.

Well, if you were to run a party against Kyuss and Dragotha would you try to 'wing it' with a minimum of updates to their stat blocks, such as with the 3.5 conversion guide for the PFRPG, or would you rebuild them from the ground up using the Bestiary/Core Rules? Can Kyuss and Dragotha even be remade using PFRPG, considering their 'epic' stat blocks?

Also, will Ultimate Equipment feature a new character class(es), like the other 'Ultimate' books have, such as a gadgeteer, artificer or some other equipment oriented class?

James, thank you so much for allowing me to inundate you with floods of questions again and again while you were wandering the Paizo booth at Gen Con. This time, I've got a couple Age of Worms related questions for you.

First, my group is about to start 'Into the Wormcrawl Fissure' and I wanted to know if you could give me some advice to, or point me toward resources that would help, update the stat blocks for both Dragotha and Kyuss for PFRPG use. Can't seem to find PFRPG fan updates for either of those baddies anywhere.

Second, if you could pick any of those AoW miniatures I commissioned Dark Platypus to sculpt that I showed you at Gen Con to have as a gift, which would you want? I have extras of all and wanted to present a custom painted miniature to you at the next Paizo Con for helping to make AoW the coolest campaign my friends and I have ever played (I also have an Ulgurstasta being sculpted now too, if that floats your boat).

Are attendees to the Paizo seminars featured at Gencon '11 allowed to bring digital recorders or any sort of audio recording device into the seminars?

Do you use miniatures, 2D counters, or some combination of both for use in the games that you run?

Do you use digital map projection, printed maps, 3D terrain, or some combination of those for use in the games that you run?

What edition of Gamma World do you usually run or play?

These are really great! Do you have pictures of the finished pieces? I'd love to see them in all their painted glory! :-p

Actually, I am having Andy over at Dark Platypus Studios recast them all in an rtv rubber, with metal bits for appendages. I am not too familiar with the Sculpy that the original sculptor used, so to be on the safe side I'm commissioning Andy to make molds of them and recast them in a super-strong material, with the added bonus of having the ability to remake as many as desired. When they get painted up, I will send you a link!

On a side note, Andy makes the best Gelatinous Cube mini I have ever seen (I own 4), and I have commissioned him to sculpt and cast, some other creatures that have long been neglected and were in dire need of a good miniature. Check out the Phaerimm he sculpted and cast for me here (scroll to the bottom of the page to view the 3 pics of the Phaerimm):

How big exactly is that Burrower Bug?

If you follow the link to my painter's website, Middle Pillar Path Painting, you can see that although it is on a 4"x4" base (gargantuan) that the figure isn't THAT big, but is still intimidating. Short answer, the miniature appears to be about 1/2 the size that it appears to be on the cover of Champion's Belt, in comparison to an average humanoid. Pages 3 and 4 have the Burrower Bug painted and on it's base for you to see:

So, yeah. As far as I can tell, the "problems" with freedom of movement HAVE been handled. Assuming it works on an effect that's not listed is not a problem with the spell, it's a problem more akin to wishful thinking, I guess.

Thank you very much for the quick response. I agree totally with everything that you wrote, I am just tired of arguing semantics and interpretations with my players, when the spell clearly states what it does. By the way, all of the situations I listed were actual in game encounters the PCs attempted to utilize FoM. Some I agreed with, some I did not. Anyway, you rock James.

Hold person/monster hasn't (fortunately) come up against the PCs while effected by active FoM spells so far, but that is something I didn't even think about. Thanks for that heads-up Michael!

Paralysis is paralysis, no matter what effect causes it. Whether it's from a supernatural attack, a spell, a poison, or whatever... if it causes the condition of paralysis, freedom of movement will negate it.

As for grease... freedom of movement allows you to totally ignore that spell's effects. It does, after all, grant "freedom of movement."

Thanks James for clearing that up, as I was about to post a question regarding how FoM effects the spell grease. My player-characters encountered an antagonist in the AoW-'A Gathering of Winds' this past Saturday who used a grease effect on them while they were under the influence of FoM.

BUT, could you please clear up these other issues regarding the effects of FoM. I have searched high and low on every forum everywhere and can't seem to find an authority (i.e. designer, editor, writer, etc.) to address these long standing issues.

FoM vs. chains/shackles/restraints
FoM vs. frozen solid/buried up to neck in sand/falling in quicksand
FoM vs. difficult terrain/dense rubble
FoM vs. squeezing
FoM vs. Armor check penalties
FoM vs. Armor speed penalties
FoM vs. Armor Max Dex bonus
FoM vs. water movement-does the recipient have the option to swim, or must they "move normally" (i.e. walk on the bottom) if swimming is not their primary method of movement?

Sorry to ask like this, but I wanted a solid ruling, not a house ruling, as this I feel this spell is continuously abused, do to highly interpretive wording. I had hoped that the Pathfinder RPG would have straightened out the abusive issues, much in the same way the spells polymorph and find the path have been fixed. These issues need to be addressed once and for all.

Do they actually sell bases, or will I have to make my own? If so how will I make it? My figure does not stand up so well.

There is a company called Litko Aerosystems that makes bases up to 3"x3" out of what ever material you want them to be (wood, plastic, etc.). They also do custom jobs, as I had them make some 4"x4" and 6"x6" bases for me for the Gargantuan and Colossal sizes respectively.

I'm also trying to get a hold of a ringwraith action figure to kyussify

Try searching for the 'Witch King Ringwraith' action figure by Toy Biz on eBay/Google, as it has the best shroud for a Kyuss figure. Avoid the 'Morgul Lord Witch King' action figure, as it has the lame crown and the shroud isn't as cool. Also, make sure to buy the blister-packaging version of the 'Witch King Ringwraith' and not the gift/special edition-packaging, as it is about $10 cheaper on average for the exact same figure.

Hope that helps! Hale Kyuss!

This may be a dead thread, but as I am about to embark on the 'Champion's Belt' adventure, I figured I'd share with all of you the idea I had for the "Apostle" Ulgurstasta in my game. It is an old Mongoose miniature for the defunct Starship Troopers miniatures game called a 'Burrower Bug'.

Even though they are out of production, I have found them MiB (there are 2 per box) on eBay for $20 or less listed a couple times a month. Hope this helps anyone still looking for a good Ulgurstasta mini! See link for pic.

Thanks Callum for the response! I agree that it should be considered a light source equal to a torch or spell equivalent, just wanted to get someone else's opinion. I also like your idea about starting the wind cycle off with less intensity to give the PC's a little extra time to figure things out before being blown away. I will put your advice to good use when we get to that encounter in our game.

Thanks again!

After re-reading area #8 in the Whispering Cairn, I found that I had more questions about the mechanics of this encounter. Hopefully, some of you veterans of the AoW campaign can help me out.

1) When the trap triggers and the 'Face' animates, do the eyes emit light? The trap description states "the face's eyes spin with hypnotic illusory patterns in all of the colors of the rainbow that correspond with unlit lanterns in the chamber below." However, no where in the writing does it suggest that the eyes are actually glowing or radiating light (indeed, without the art at the beginning of the module, which depicts a party being blown away from the face and the eyes clearly illuminating the tunnel, would we not assume the tunnel was pitch black?)

2) If no light is emitted from the eyes of the 'Face' during it's wind cycle, wouldn't torches and/or lanterns be blown out and, if so, wouldn't there be no colors to see in the first place? Not only would the characters not know what colors are 'missing' from the lantern room below, but how could they be affected by 'hypnotic eyes' (and in turn, the hold person effects) they couldn't see?

Has someone else already thought of this and come up with a solution or work around, or am I just thinking too deep into this? If the eyes do radiate light, would they be considered 'Bright Light' or 'Shadowy Illumination'?

Hi there,

I am producing maps from the 'Whispering Cairn' adventure using the Dundjinni mapping software.

Do I need to ask permission before doing this...or is it OK?

Hi,

I am immensely interested in this, as I am about to purchase Dundjinni for the very same purpose! I have been a long time forum lurker on the Dundjinni site, and now that we're getting ready to start up the AoW campaign, I wanted to start out by mapping the Whispering Cairn.

As far as the End User License Agreement/copyright goes with Dundjinni, I'm not sure, but you may want to post your question there as well. I know that WoTC will NOT allow anyone that recreates their maps to post them on any forums/websites, including Dundjinni...there use to be some nice recreations of the Sunless Citadel (from the adventure of the same name) on the Dundjinni forums until some attorneys at WoTC got them to take it off.

Don't know if Paizo would be as restrictive...I know Goodman Games has allowed their maps to be recreated using Dundjinni and are encouraging artists/map makers to post there finished maps as free downloads!

Are they resin, or plastic, or rubber (ew!)?
And are they all one-offs, or will he still have the moulds for more, and if so, are they destroyed in the process?

Sure, 'carlturner2@hotmail.com' is his e-mail address. As this is his hobby, and not his job, the turn around for my last commission (all the AoW stuff) was about 6 months.

He uses a copper wire armature for the basic 'skeleton', then molds the model around it using Sculpy clay, then heats it to cure.
The Overworms were just simple WoTC Purple Worms, modified with some 'green stuff' epoxy.

They are all one-offs, per my specifications, as I only needed certain monsters (pretty much all the Aberrations that WoTC has never bothered to sculpt-or sculpted horribly). So, sorry no molds, but I'm sure he could recreate anything he has already done, as I know he has saved all the photos of the customs he made for me.

Wow, that is an awesome custom job. Did you modify an existing toy/figure? I especially like the green stuff worms and the custom sceptre/mace...SWEET! Guaranteed to be a scary sight for any party to run across.

I commissioned a sculptor to do some custom minis for my D&D campaigns, which included a Kyuss figure, 5 Overworms (WoTC pre-painted Purple Worms with green stuff modifications) and the Momma Carrion Crawler from the 'Kings of the Rift' adventure. If you like these, I could post links to all the other Aberrations I had sculpted (like Aboleths, Phaerimms, Cloaker Lord, Tendriculos, Remorhaz, a 'real' Purple Worm, etc.)

Please note: none of the minis were painted at the time these photos were taken and they were all (except the Overworms) crafted using wire armatures and Sculpy.

I'll be playing 3.0/3.5 until my Players are sick of D&D...so, at least a few more years. I have a mountain of 3.0/3.5 stuff that cost an arm and a leg and a long time to aquire, so I'll 'go with what I know'. I see no reason to ditch what it took me so long to collect just because some marketing geniuses at WoTC decided it was time to. I mean, I literally have years of D&D books/adventures I could use for a near endless amount of campaigns, so what would be the point of starting over?

As far as following Paizo goes, I think they alone are what made D&D great through the entirety of the 3.0/3.5 editions, but if they ditch those to go with 4th, I'll play out all their back issues of Dungeon & the Adventure Paths, then quit D&D and just find another game.
