You are right that everyone contributed to that feeling. I did say everyone was amazing. :)

However, I do think you are underestimating how much you set the tone that everyone else followed. It was not just the way you paused the game, it was the way you asked everyone to make sure there were no errors, and the way you talked about the character death in discussion afterwards. You designated this as something significant, and then my wonderful teammates roleplayed that significance.

You guys are amazing, thank you so much!

GMG, thank you for the graceful way you handled this, including the way you wrote the note on the chronicle. You made the character death feel meaningful, part of a story, rather than just a few bad dice rolls.

Some of you have offered, either in private or by posting, to contribute to the raise dead cost. I would indeed like help if any of you are willing; I can pay for it, but am concerned by the impact this may have on the playability of the character.

The character is intended to be a grippli magus who also uses agile tongue to apply spells. I've already applied the race boon, but the character has not been played yet.

I think I will pay for the raise dead magic.

Things are a little complicated in this case, because the character is a bundle of pregen and GM credits. If I were to build the character, it would be level 3 with one chronicle already held for level 4. Can I spend money from that held chronicle as well as the money from this game's chronicle as resurrection costs, since in a sense the character will not die until this chronicle is applied, or do I need to pay for it out of chronicles that are not and will not be held?

I will be using gold to pay for the raise dead, and PP for the two castings of restoration.

As the life is crushed out of him, Seltyiel curses his real father and foster father who set him on the path leading hear, and the strange being called the 'RNG' responsible for his fate. Then, all fades to blackness.

Seltyiel looks around, willing to open the door if no one else does, but giving others a chance first.

"Do any of you know what this statue is supposed to represent?"

CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Seltyiel looks at the others. "I seem to have been injured. Can any of you heal me, or shall I try to use my wand myself?"

I did not use spell combat, I only used spellstrike, which (at least if the pregen text is correct) does not have a penalty to the attack.

relevant text:
Whenever Seltyiel casts a spell with a range of touch, he can deliver the spell through his scimitar as a part of a melee attack. Instead of the free melee touch attack normally allowed to deliver a spell, he can make a free melee attack with his scimitar at his full attack bonus as a part of casting the spell.

so the attack should have had +2 for flanking and +2 for orc bane, but no penalty.

Seltyiel tries to cast a spell while avoiding the orc's threats.
i.e. casts shocking grasp defensively
conc. check: 1d20 + 9 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 9 + 4 = 18

Now Seltyiel channels the electricity through his sword, which he swings at the nasty blue orc.

attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13 +4 if the orc is wearing metal armor
damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
spell damage: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 1, 6) = 15

Seltyiel notices that the blue orc is not looking well, so decides to take the risk. He stands up (move action), drops his bow (free action), and draws his sword (second move action instead of a standard).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Seltyiel is delaying until after the others have gone, hoping that they can make it safe for him to stand up.

Seltyiel moves towards the enemies, lifts his bow, and shoots at blue.
attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
crit confirm: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
damage, critical: 3d8 + 9 ⇒ (4, 8, 7) + 9 = 28

What does the team think? Should Seltyiel take Einn up on her offer and use his sword instead of his bow?

Seltyiel prepares his bow, thinking that is a better way for him to contribute to an ambush than a sword. Barbo seems to have the team's magical needs well covered for right now.

Seltyiel smirks at the carving.

Seltyiel shakes his head in answer to Barbo's question, and then looks around the room, seeing if there is anything they have missed.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

He has let the rest of the Online Venture Team know that he is ill, although we haven't heard anything in a few days.

"The fool clearly is not going to surrender. Let's end this."

Seltyiel slices at the struggling orc with his scimitar.
attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Seltyiel looks at the tangled up orc. Not worth a spell, he thinks. He cannot get close and attack, so he moves around to be on the other side of the orc. double move

Seltyiel waits for someone else to make light. Once they step into the darkness and it is clear no one else is going to do anything, he sighs dramatically, casts a spell for a second, and touches the tip of his scimitar. It begins to glow, giving him the light he needs to see.

Seltyiel smirks and follows.

I agree to left first as a standard group decision.

cure spells at least can be taken from bard, though. Lesser restoration is not on any arcane list, except for alchemist, which is 'not a spellcaster' (eye-roll).

For this scenario, protection from evil is on the wizard list.

suggested marching order:
Bala, Xiao
Seltyiel, Aryxis (highest AC of the three squishies)
Barbo, Einn

Seltyiel smirks as he thinks about what he knows.

kn. history: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
kn. local: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
kn. history: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

"You may or may not know that when the sonnet’s hero died, the crusaders buried her and her sword, which had shattered against the orc’s bones, in a dwarven ruin. After the orc chief perished, his hordes fled. Without this victory, the Shining Crusade would have suffered major losses."

Thank you for sharing what you are thinking here. I don't know that we have a lot to say right now, but I didn't want you feeling like you're talking to an empty room!

A tall, lithe half elf man glides into the room. "I am Seltyiel, adept at blade and spell." He then slips into silence, a hint of a sardonic smile remaining in the corners of his mouth.

Here's my (Redelia's) pregen alias. I'll get it set up and the requested stuff on your slides later today, GMG. Can you please remove my normal user from the character list?

Thank you very much, Lorenzo, this was very much in the area I was hoping that games for the GM mentorship program would end up in. We had fun playing while at the same time you provided an interesting commentary as to what was going on 'behind the scenes.'

I have my chronicle, and it looks correct.

Setyiel walks over to the slave that Blackburn had, and makes sure that his chains are not painfully tight. Then he asks if someone can use his cure wand on him, in case there is more trouble on the way.

Seltyiel uses spell recall to be able to cast shocking grasp again. (swift action). He then casts it, and then steps forward. His scimitar begins to spark and glow, and then he swings it at the prone slaver.

attack, bless, advice: 1d20 + 7 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 7 + 1 + 1 = 26
scimitar damage, advice: 1d6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 1 = 6
spell damage: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 5, 5) = 19

Thank you for explaining your thinking about a rules question. It was helpful to me to see.

Only that the chronicle is being held for the appropriate level. (some GMs like to put a note like that on, others prefer not to)

Huh? Did that concentration check change after I previewed it? I was sure the result I came up with was an 18...

Seltyiel swings at the thug with the green hat with his scimitar.

Seltyiel casts shocking grasp defensively.
conc. check: 1d20 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 4 = 14
success

attack, bless: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 1 = 24
damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
spell damage: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 5) = 14

Seltyiel casts shocking grasp, moves forward, and swings his crackling scimitar at the thug in the yellow hat.

attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 1 = 24 (+3 if wearing metal armor)
normal damage: 1d6 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 = 9
spell damage: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 4, 1) = 15

Seltyiel moves forward.

Seltyiel nods to Zadim. He then makes a show of pretending to make sure the chains and other restraints are tight, but really is checking to make sure they are not overly tight.

I think the problem was less lack of interest, and more paralysis from feeling like what we did didn't matter. There wasn't really anything we could do to make it more likely we would win, and it was incredibly unlikely we could do anything such that we would win all three. And so, out of frustration, I kept telling myself I would post later, and I would guess that so did many others. (I want to be completely clear here; it's frustration with the mechanics, not with you.)

suggested bids: 10, 11, and then 9. Splitting almost evenly gets a good chance to be a high bid, but we don't want to be absolutely consistent.

Seltyiel stands up straight and tall. "Does everyone who has business to do look like a regular? Get out of our way so we can get our business done and get out of here."

intimidate: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

Seltyiel stands quietly with a smirk. Any questions he might ask have already been asked by someone else.

Seltyiel shrugs. "I find it highly unlikely that there are enough criminals or those in excessive debt in all of Golarion just to explain the slaves in Absalom, let alone the rest of the world."

Seltyiel bows to Corona. For a moment, his sarcastic mask slips from his face, and she sees real gratitude and respect. Then the mask falls back into place. "Would you please hold onto that and use it as needed when I am hurt?"

Ah, I was right about Bathory being the inspiration!

Seltyiel nods at Zadim's actions, and digs out his own healing wand. "Could one of you please help me recover from that creature's attacks?"

While we are talking 'behind the curtain,' I noticed the GM hints about using the shards like daggers. Can you tell us what the mechanical consequence was of that?

Seltyiel hears how badly Zadim is injured, and decides to take a gamble. He drops his scimitar and holds the shard like a dagger. He then casts shocking grasp, moves forward, locates the creature one last time with the shard, and then strikes at the creature with the shard.

I'm going to just calculate this like a dagger attack. GM, please adjust as needed.

attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
confirm: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
crit damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
spell damage: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 6, 1) = 14
spell critical: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 3) = 13
percent die, if needed, low is good: 1d100 ⇒ 61

Sorry about the mess, hopefully all the rolls are there that you need to determine what happens
