My group and I are finally about to start playing Rise of the Runelords (hooray) and of course I plan to convert it to PFRPG rules first. But I've already stumbled upon my first question.

The PFRPG Conversion Guide states for Converting NPCs on p 12 that "[...] the CR of NPCs is reduced by 1 in the Pathfinder RPG [...]". Could somebody explain to me why that is?

Does this maybe only count for NPCs converted with the quick conversion method?

Does it perhaps only apply to NPCs that use exclusively NPC-classes (and no PC-classes)?

How can I make sure that converted NPCs will provide an equal challenge?

I can't find any explanation for this in the Core Rulebook, and I don't have the Advanced Player's Guide or GameMastery Guide. Yet.

So if anybody could enlighten me, I would be most appreciative!

I totally agree on supporting Paizo for their hard work. It's something I'm definitely willing to pay extra for (which I've already done several times).

I don't think I will be helping Paizo, however, for paying an absurd amount of shipping costs. Supporting Paizo is one thing, but supporting the different postal services and customs is something else.


This is actually tearing me apart here.

I really want to support you guys and buy the books from your website, but since my wife and I bought a house in August we really have to watch our expenses (still a lot of repairs to pay for, such as holes in roofs, shabby electricity lines, moist walls, and what-not).

So seeing those prices on Amazon is REALLY tempting, but I would feel like a dirty traitor to the one and only company that I respect for its business practices: Paizo.

Is there really no way to have it shipped to Europe with standard postal services that might take a little longer, but don't cost more than the actual product itself?

I realize you're pretty busy, but can you still find the time to dig up the comments on my Wondrous Whetstone of Wounding? I'm curious to know what the judges thought of it.

I posted it again a few pages ago, but I assume you just missed it. I'll reprint it here for sake of ease. I already gathered from my fellow forum members that the pricing was way too low; and personally, I think the item was too boring when compared with the other submitted items. However, I'd like to hear your take on it.

The wondrous whetstone of wounding resembles a simple whetstone for sharpening swords, axes, lances, or any other kind of edged melee weapon. When it is applied to a magic weapon however, it sharpens it and also imbues it with the wounding special ability. The whetstone does not grant a magic enhancement bonus on the weapon; the weapon must already have a magic enhancement bonus of at least +1. The weapon also gains a moderate conjuration aura. Both ability and aura remain for 24 hours. When this time has passed, the ability and aura disappear and the weapon returns to its state before the whetstone was used.

Depending on the power of the whetstone, it might apply this special ability a number of times per week. Once all uses are expended for that week, the whetstone’s magic becomes dormant and the whetstone temporarily becomes mundane. The number of times such a whetstone can apply its ability depends on the power of the stone; the price is determined based on this number of applications. Different applications per week per whetstone need not necessarily be applied to the same weapon.

Other whetstones exist that can imbue other abilities. Whetstones that apply abilities with a higher base price modifier, according to table 15-7 of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook, take up one price slot higher and allow one less application per week for each modifier point over +1. For example, a whetstone granting speed (+3 modifier) exist in a 64,000 gp version (applicable 1/week) and a 100,000 gp (2/week).

Thanks, Patrick, for clearing that up (and repeating it again for my sake... sorry for the wasted effort on your part).

It seems a fair enough reason, but I'd still be glad to hear what they had to say on my submission. Personally, I'd prefer a harsh lesson over no lesson at all -- it would take a heck of a lot more to discourage me ;)


I was wondering...

I assume the judges discussed all submitted items in their respective threads to decide whether or not to keep them, just like they did the top 32, right?

Then why not make all those threads public? That way even those who didn't make round 2 can see the 'official' commentary as well as collect all spectator-comments per item.

Wouldn't that make it easier for all of us? Or would opening that much threads be an IT-organizational nightmare? Maybe it's a deliberate move to get the community socializing more? Or is there some entirely different reason that I'm just not seeing?

Because it seems like such a basic suggestion; somebody else must have already proposed this. In which case I apologize for the redundancy -- I'm just to preoccupied right now (read: lazy) to look it up.

Making video games is fun -- in fact, it was one of my childhood dreams. But it's exhausting and time consuming like nothing I know. Being extremely passionate about it only multiplies that. Besides, when you get confronted with all the bad stuff around your hobby (which you cannot choose to ignore if it's your job), you will lose interest for a while at best, or suffer permanent burnout at worst. That's something I would not like to see happen to my passion for roleplaying games.

No, of course not! I didn't mean to say the items were not original; I meant no disrespect, and I'm certainly not claiming I'm more original than anyone else. I very well realize that I'm no match in this competition, but I'm practicing.

In fact, one of my personal flaws is not thinking outside of the box enough, hence my original exclamation. I'm happy for myself that for once I managed to come up with something that nobody came up with first. Again, without claiming any form of superiority -- far from it.

On the other hand, perhaps my trying to be original might have lead to my item not being selected. I really hope to see some feedback in the feedback thread when it's unlocked. I know my strengths and my weaknesses, and I am humble but eager to learn.

To emphasize: I'm sorry if I stepped on any toes here. That was not my intention.


Oh boy, am I glad my item type is not on this list. Not that I have anything against them, but at least I know now that I can come up with an original idea (even though it might not be very sexy).

To the unfortunate ones, I would like to say "chin up!" For now, try to go out of your way (but in a gentle and friendly manner) to collect feedback on your item, and get ready to compete again next year. In the meantime, do as I do and unofficially join the next rounds in the sidelines; forcing oneself to be creative within the given closing dates is really good exercise!

After an extensive search on the boards, I was surprised I couldn't find any thread about this yet. So I'm starting my own (sorry if such a thread already exists -- could you please point me there?)

I wanted to give my opinion on the new icons that will be used in the monster stat blocks, and that I've seen appear first in the PFRPG Bestiary Preview I and Pathfinder Adventure Path #25: The Bastards of Erebus.

Even though I fully support the idea of adding icons to make the stat block easier to read, I don't think DMs are waiting for icons that describe ecologies. Icons, as I see them, are an abbreviated form of some information that allows a DM to quickly assess what the monster is about. The keyword here is 'quickly' -- typically in the heat of battle (and you can take that quite literally).

Information, such as environment and monster type, is useful only when an adventure is being designed, and during the design phase, a DM has plenty of time to look over the information. Icons won't really help here. What might help in case of these ecologies, is compiling some sort of index in the back of the bestiary (or on the pfrpg-srd) where you can quickly find the monster, for example, and scan down the appropriate list. That would eliminate the need to keep flipping pages for monster types you're not looking for.

I would save the icons for more combat-related information, although I'm not sure myself what information could be used. How about whether the monster in question is more a melee, ranger, or stealthy fighter, or a mix of some of these (sort of like the monster roles from 4E, but much better)? How about icons for its most used attacks, perhaps even "linking" icons so you can quickly see which attack follows which (I'm thinking here of all the monsters that use Improved Grab first to follow it up with a Swallow Whole, for example) -- sometimes a lot of combat features can get confusing when you need to make snap judgment during combat. Or how about easily overlooked information, like regeneration, auras, immunities, or damage/spell reductions?

I realize some of these suggestions are not easily conveyed with icons, but surely there must be some better way to make use of them during the game?


Hi all,

I finally got around to purchasing myself a Harrow Deck, and I'm very glad I did. It's an awesome product, and I've already used it a couple of times to try and divine my and my wife's future, just to get a feel of it.

However, with our last spread, we got the card called 'The Theater' (NG Cha), and reading the explanation in the booklet made me none the wiser.

It says:

"The Theater is the card of true prophecy. The puppets act out a scene, just as the prophet acts out a scene in which he has no part. The prophet is the audience and the prophecy is the show. She has no influence on what she sees, and its importance is often not recognized until too late. [...]"

I have no idea how to interpret this one. Is the prophet mentioned actually the Harrower reading this deck, and the prophecy the spread she has before her? In other words, is this more a meta-card? If not, who is the prophet, and what is the prophecy?

The description ends with:

"[...] If misaligned, the prophecy is just for show."

And this is the part that made me confused in the first place (since the card we had was indeed misaligned). At first I thought this card meant the whole spread was just bogus.

Or am I just looking to far? Perhaps this card is only useful within an actual game where divinations are made and prophecies are followed, and not really suited for "real life spreads"?

How would you interpret this card?


Very interesting, but I was wondering if, at some point in the future, we could see a sample stat block of a monster? I'm curious to know what exactly Paizo has improved on the stats, descriptions, and layout from the WotC manuals.

I would basically just like to know if this book is worth purchasing when I already have 4 monster manuals of 3rd edition sitting on my shelf.


If a vote-count will help the psions (and soulknives and psychic warriors too, of course) survive into the Pathfinder RPG, then I will definitely cast my vote on the pro-side.

Please, don't exclude psionics from Golarion!

In two weeks, I will begin running chapter 2 of the Shackled City AP.

I'm currently preparing, by looking up the stat blocks (and entering them on my laptop), but I can't seem to find those for the goblin adepts, goblin sneaks and goblin skirmishers (i.e. the Eyes of Drakthar, mentioned on pg 81 of the hardcover). According to the location descriptions, they should be among the list of stat blocks in Appendix 4, but I can only find those for the Silent Wolf goblins.

Are they really missing (and, in that case, can someone help me come up with them), or am I just not looking hard enough?

I, just like everybody else here, it seems, am very glad to be a Paizo customer. Indeed, both their products and customer service are top notch. As such, I am more than willing to pay my share and support Paizo as much as I can.

I am a little reluctant, though, to pay almost the same price of the product to the postal services in ways of shipping and handling.

As a point in case, I was looking to order the D&D card game Three Dragon Ante, which is listed here in the online Paizo shops at a mere $13.49 (which is even way below the amount I would have coughed up for it -- so thank you again Paizo ;)). However, when I designate Belgium as my shipping address, the total price goes up to $24.99.

That's a big $11.50 in S&H, and the only reason why I'm not placing my order here (or anywhere else for that matter). I'm very sorry (both for Paizo and me), but I have no choice.


Praise yourselves lucky! Living in Europe grants us the joyous privilege of having to pay 10$ (!) shipping costs.

So, obviously, for us ordering just one back issue is madness: that's 17$, almost 60% of which is shipping.

I sincerely hope that Paizo will start considering opening up branches of their printers and publishers in other parts of the world, so the non-US subscriber is treated with a little more dignity and grace. If I weren't so gung ho on this stuff, a mere chuckle might suffice for me to turn my back and leave.
