"It's been awhile now, around the time that fog appeared. Too many of my lads've gone missing. I'm a nasty old bastard myself, I know, but I do look after them kids the best I can. Here in Smoke we take what we can for family."

Samael leans forward from the background where he's stood taking everything in. "How well guarded is this gate? You say it's out front - does that mean we'll just be marching up to the front door and banging on it?"

You make your way a block or so until you reach an area that Kenneth swears is the Goodly Cup. It's not until he leads you down some stairs into some ruined, gothic cathedral that you finally see the sign marking the dive bar. The sign depicts a scantly clad halfing woman sitting in a tea cup with shapely legs hanging over the edge. The sign is faded and bears several tags of graffiti.

The inside is dimly lit by oil lamps and has no windows at all. The place is filled with the worst sort, but everyone is at least keeping to themselves. Behind the bar is a middle-aged halfling woman who may have been quite beautiful at some point, but years of hard living have left their mark upon her features. She eyes you suspiciously for a moment as you enter but that is all.

As we make our way over to the darkest corner we can find in the bar, Samael looks around to see if anyone in the bar seems to be paying a bit more attention to the group than others. (Do I use my passive insight check for this?)

Once we get into the corner, Samael turns to Old Thom - "So old man, it seems that the company you keep has started to draw some attention. It would clearly be in your best interest tell us what you know about the Beggar King." Intimidate check = 15 - EDIT: Shoot never mind - I just checked my character sheet. I only have a +1 to intimidate and not at +4. So 11, and not 15. So next time, I'm thinking I'll let a character who's a little more intimidating do the intimidation. Oops.

"No kidding - I think all his negotiating leverage flew out the window the moment he decided he'd rather fight than talk. Does anyone else know a place we can get to, and quick?" Samael says, looking around at the party.

Drawing your crossbow is a minor action and you'll have to either sheath your greatsword or drop it. Sheathing a weapon is a minor action and dropping it is a free action. We can assume that you sheathed the sword and say you didn't move unless you'd like to drop the sword.

Ok - Sounds good to me

Samael grabs his crossbow and fires a bolt to the figure he spots hiding atop the building at D11. To Hit: 21 and Damage: 6

How hard is it to move through a square with barrels in it? O11 specifically. Assuming it costs 2 movement points or less, Samael will do the following. If not, he's done for the turn

Samael then negotiates his way through the barrels to O10 and then jump up to N9. Athletics Check - 18

"Old Thom", Samael growls, "We just wanted to talk - but now I'll get to enjoy watching you die."

Must have left out a letter -- maybe an 'f'?

Heh - yeah I see that now. Plus, I see I posted it unaliased. That's what I guess for trying to chase my 2 year old around and post at the same time!

Stealth 1d20+8 = 10

and Initiative 1d20+3 = 12

It's perfectly acceptable to assume you've discussed this a bit beforehand.

Looks like the majority is swinging towards sneaking up and interrogating with one minority wanting to knock "Old Thom" out.

Any more ideas?

I'm inclined to interrogating him also. Samael's at +8 for Stealth, but I don't know if that'll be useful. Diplomacy? Not so much - just a +1. Samael will hang to the side ready to jump in if things turn ugly.

O13

Ignore Dagobert in that case please DM. Sorry to jump in Samael and had no intention of stealing your thunder. Apologies all around for the trigger happy posting.

No problem!

Giving one more hour or so on the skill challenge then we're moving on with just the information you've gathered so far. I'm willing to allow anyone to make the next check since Samael has yet to show.

I'm back - Sorry about that. I was unexpectedly without Internet Access all yesterday. Streetwise Roll of 3+8+2 = 13 (edited to include +2 bonus mentioned up thread). More Coming.

Samael keeps an eye out for anyone seeming to lurk in the shadows. Seeing a handful of teenage boys loitering about near the edges of a run down building, he walks over, "We're looking for a guy who goes by the name of 'Old Thom' - anyone heard of him?"

"Time to be moving, or is anyone interested in testing more goblin wine? There are people to see and things to interrogate. Some of them might be humanoid."

"Sounds good to me."

Eladrin Stranger wrote:
"However, what we need are some above-average sellswords. Hopefully you're all worth the gold."

"Well - that sure sounds like a vote of confidence to me. You know - come to think of it, I don't think I ever caught your name... Or that of our new Boss. It's always nice to know who I'm working for." Samael says with a smile.

"Plus - once we get you this information, how are we supposed to contact you again? Just wander around Smoke asking for the Eladrin with the scar on his cheek?"

Dannad Bumbleroot wrote:
"'M fine with the conditions, an' ifin the rest o' ya don't mind I think we may have a bit o' a looky-loo at this Old Thom's haunts. Dim Lane, weren't it?"

"Sounds good to me - provided our mysterious friend here becomes just a bit less mysterious."

Dagobert the Luckless wrote:
"Or dwarves. Nasty creatures. They get everywhere."

Samael shakes his head and chuckles softly - but, perhaps a bit uncharacteristically, keeps his mouth shut.

"Whatever he's up to, I hear he's having to pay and arm and a leg to hire swords for it."

Turning to Dagobert - "Rats? What's to discuss about Rats - other than they seem to infest everything in Smoke?"

Sorry, posting and running.

Rumor roll: ** spoiler omitted **

Samael, would you mind terribly picking a different avatar? Thanks.

Sorry about that Kenneth - didn't even think to check everyone else's avatars before I picked one!

"Fellas - y'all look like a ghost just sat down," Samael responds, chuckling at the looks and stutters he receives from those present. He's fairly used to getting strange reactions - being completely hairless and having blue skin tend to make you stand out a bit.

"No worries - I'm just a Guild member, like yourselves," He says, draining his mug of beer, and tossing two more silvers to the halfling. "Mind getting me another one while you're up?"

"So - I've heard quite a bit about the Silent Maid, but seeing as how I usually run down with the holy rollers in the Bazaar, this is my first time in this oh so fine establishment. Certainly a step up from the rest of the neighborhood, I see - no offense there mate," He laughs, gesturing towards Kenneth.

Rumor dice roll:

Spoiler:
I rolled a 2 over on Dice Log as well, as I can't get to Invisible Castle right now.

Samael walks into the bar, dressed head to toe in darker clothing - with a gleaming greatsword strapped to his back. Noticing the Eladrin, he nods in that direction, and then walks up to the bar, and orders a beer. Once he has it, he stroll over to the table, grabs a chair and props his feet up on a corner of the table. "So - what's the deal, this 'Matter of Great Importance'?"

(OOC - I'll chose an avatar when I get off work tonight.)
