Thanks to both

Silver Crusade

The rules seem to not be clear about thus so here is my question.

"..."Regardless of the target, smite evil attacks automatically bypass any DR the creature might possess."

If a NPC with DR5/Magic is hit how would you interpret this?

One interpretation is that a hit bypasses DR for all the _smite evil_ portion of the damage and the DR is applied against the mundane portion of the weapons damage.

The other interpretation is the all damage avoids the DR including mundane

Thoughts? Thank you!

crafting while having a gerbil remov....oops!

Silver Crusade

Well done!

Spoiler:
After my players decide to head back to Sandpoint they will hear about this political intrigue. They will likely be in the middle of Thistletop and will be itching to get back but one never knows

The first one sounds like a good hook. I love introducing threads like these early so they connect the episodes of the Adventure Path a bit better. Just be careful or you'll have players jumping ahead.

As far as the guards in Sandpoint...

The other big forward hook my players have noticed is ** spoiler omitted **

Hi fellow GM's. I would love some input about how you feel this can or would affect the campaign.

Spoiler:
One of the PC's is a distant cousin of the Valdemar family. He also is an unwitting messenger for the Brothers of the Seven when he delivered a note on behalf of the 'business organization' to Aldern Fixglove.

With this background my idea is to have Magnimar playing hardball with Sheriff Hemlock where it boils down to they want a better tithe deal or they wont be able to help

Has anyone done these types of things? A plot outside of the main plot moves forward and can have a real affect on things down the line? Ideas on how you did it and what did and did not work would be awesome. :-) Thanks very much in advance!

Silver Crusade

Well, high enough resolution on battlemaps that they were not fuzzy when blown up large enough for tokens. Naturally, scaled to 1" = 5'.

Most VTT's leave you able to enlarge and lay their grid over yours. I know roll20 does this.

Other, say overland, maps don't need grids...just high enough resolution.

AdventureaWeek optimizes for VTT's. check it out.

Silver Crusade

This will be the one to open up my Midgard campaign. I was going to start in Margreve but that will come later me thinks.

I am going to run this campaign on roll20 VTT. I only wish more publishers would optimize maps and images for VTT when making their PDF's and make it part of the package. The growth of VTT's is becoming exponential IMHO

Silver Crusade

The value here is ridiculous! If you are on the fence it's time to jump off on the right side and back this amazing project.

I only wish I could swing enough of a pledge to get March access!

Silver Crusade

@Mir
You have to go over and back it now :-)

Silver Crusade

That is all it took to push it over the top! Woohoo!

Silver Crusade

I increased to the $100 level. This software will start really good and get better and better as it is tweaked and the community adds value.

Cannot wait until May to try it!

Silver Crusade

+1 @Jaynay27

Adding VTT or other virtual assets and usefulness to the AP's will not reduce usage but increase it.

How many players cant find face to face games in this world? How many players would be added simply by increasing the pool of possible players?

These are numbers that cannot be defined currently but adding this compatibility will increase total distribution not decrease it.

Just submitted my pitch! Regardless of what happens I feel good that this was my first adventure pitch submitted :-)

Kwirky88:

I use CC3/DD3/CD3 to make makes as well and if you like I can submit them to you to post on your cool site. I just finished up Habe's Sanatorium ground level and will do the rest of the floors as well.

Let me know

Silver Crusade

OK...I started up a new email so I could pledge to RW. I have high hopes for this project :-)

Silver Crusade

Nice work for the community! Thanks!

I'll have level 2 ready by Wednesday next week, for those interested.

Sadly I did not and I truly wish I could support this project. I would mail them a check.

Did you ever get Amazon to work for you, Rondor?

Silver Crusade

Changed my password at Amazon last night...still will not work this morning.

Pretty much done with Amazon at this point. When KS adds additional payments methods I will be back.

I cant wait for Realm Works. I love Hero Lab and RW is going to be even better.

Silver Crusade

I am so in but I fricking HATE amazon payments with a passion. What cant KS have more than just Amazon?

Silver Crusade

Thanks, Mazra. I appreciate the help!

Silver Crusade

I am having a Cavalier that is a distant cousin of the Valdemars join the party in the 2nd session...

Spoiler:
He is being sent by his mentor in the Brothers of the Seven 'Society' to deliver a note to Aldern at the dinner table with the heroes at The Rusty Dragon. He will then be able to join the party after helping them through the Catacombs.

My question is can I play the Brothers of the Seven as a totally normal society of rich people somewhat like freemasons and not be burned down the plotline in this AP? Whereas only one of them is involved in this mess?

<------new PFrpg Inner Sea GM

I wanted say that I played my first session a couple of days ago and endearing the PC's to Sandpoint was one of the key things I was hoping to begin to acheive. Down the line the PC's will have choices to make that are important to Sandpoint, all Varisia and even Golarion.

Haladir wrote:

The big downside of not starting Runelords with Burnt Offerings is that's the module that really can endear the town of Sandpoint to the players. If you play it right, Sandpoint can become an almost-real place in the players' minds, and that emotional connection to the town is actually very important in Books 4 and 5.

If I were in your position, instead of giving your players the Inner Sea Primer to start off, I'd give them both the free Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition Players Guide and a copy of the Players Companion Varisia: Birthplace of Legends. That way, they can build PCs for what you'll really be throwing at them. It also can give them a from-the-start connection to Sandpoint and/or Varisia.

Good luck!

There are threads here that talk about this AP kicking butt on parties on a fairly regular basis. I am running 5-6 and decided to level them when I see fit as opposed to using XP as well as have a few extra mooks ready in case the encounter needs them.

I am just starting the AP so I dont know how this will turn out but I did a lot of research and thought this was the best approach for me.

My Party consist of;

Kellid Cleric - beginning player
Elven Gunslinger - experienced
Human 2W Rogue - returning to the game
Human Witch - 1st level sleep machine for the moment
Human Gladiator - good player
Monk/Cavalier - not sure which but player will join in session #2 and not always be with us but more a recurring most-of-the-time member of the group.

Anyway, only one session in isnt playtesting so I will report back on how the balance is later.

Silver Crusade

I am doing something like this. It's nice to not have one more thing to track and frees me to do GM stuff that is fun rather than bookeeping. I wholeheartedly recommend what Skeld says.

Also, other threads mention that RotRL is tough and does TPK parties so even with 5-6 I decided to only throw in an extra mook or 3 on the fly to challenge the party until I get a better handle on their ability (I am only one session into the AP now).

Skeld wrote:

related to what you're asking: you could forgo XP all together and just level the party according to the Advancement Track information provided at the beginning of each chapter. I use this as a rough estimate of when to level. My group hasn't used XP in years.

Has anyone compiled a list of side adventures that could be done in Varisia for the camapign?

I have seen a couple of suggestions but not one where there was some sort of list compiled.

Thanks in advance!

Silver Crusade

Seattle Family Vacation in July is such a damn good idea!

Silver Crusade

Let your players build the world as they go. Just start off with enough to get going and improv as the players go.

Silver Crusade

I am starting 5 PC's in RotRL on the 17th of this month.

The party is;

Human Witch
Elf Gunslinger
Human Cleric
Human Rogue
Human 2-Weapon Gladiator

Since I will be awarding levels at appropriate times throughout the campaign rather than doling out XP traditionally it gives me flexibility depending on how powerful the party becomes.

I am hoping to report how it goes. I will either link our Obsidian Portal site when there is a new post or add it here.

I know your excitement, Aaron!

Silver Crusade

I am going to have to transfer!

Silver Crusade

Thank you for everyone's input. Based on my player's, I have decided to go with the minkai original note except that the characters written are coded.

This way, Bethana can tranlate but when she does it is just a jumbled, coded mess in common. If they need help from there I will use skill checks for hints (which could easily include referring them to the right people in Sandpoint.

It's really just a twist so that Tsuto wouldn't just leave a note so anyone could figure out immediately where to go. That was just too convenient for me.

Again, thanks to all!

Silver Crusade

Thanks, Haladir! Smart PC. I just dont like the easy-peasy translation telling them right where to go.

The cypher was one possible solution where I would have rolls give thgem hints as to what kind of cypher it was and from there let them have at it. If it takes more than 5 min I let them roll again for another bigger hint, etc.

I suppose they could also look about town for help in solving the cypher, maybe utilizing the good 'professor' Quink.

Thanks again.

What do you think of this idea?

I am a new GM hoping to make a good impression :-)

Are you familiar with Chainmail and The Tomb of Horrors by any chance?

I have heard of them. I cut my teeth on Runequest and Call of Cthulu. I guess we liked the story and much as the battles.

I think this is the influence of the MMORPG reality we all live in. They call it Min/Max'ng I always thought what Pen and Paper was about acting a part first and foremost and the DM can design encounters that are winnable without being easy.

Hi Mazra: I recently discovered and have read your posts and all the comments. Well done and so fun to follow along. I am new to PF and DM'g but not to RPG's and I got so much help reading how your campaign has been going.

Hope to read more soon!
