Raldora is very clearly... not amused. "You have a distinct lack of tact is what I think. But, since you got that information anyway... It honestly doesn't change anything. It was either a perverse twist of fate, or a malicious act by a cultist or spirit. The cultist is most likely I would imagine, but any of the three are possible."

"I would guess that whatever caused the fire, it cut off the exit swiftly, otherwise you'd at least see the guards, warden, and his wife get out... it's impossible to know from just this, but I get the feeling the warden and his wife were underground already when the fire started. That or they were killed from falling debris. It'd help if we knew where they were found..."

After a few failed attempts to start any sort of communication, Raldora similarly focuses on paging through the professor's notes. In a way, it was almost like he was still alive; she had only met the professor once, and they had communicated via letters after that.

Raldora had chosen to forgo the heavy cloak and her armor upon waking, now dressed only in a simpler, but still sturdy, shirt and pants. She made sure to avoid staying in view of any street facing windows for obvious reasons.

"I second that notion, Windom." She says as he mentions the beds. Seeing Dr. Alderly move off towards the study, Raldora follows, saying, "I'll continue to help Dr. Alderly search Lorrimor's study. No need to risk me being noticed."

"I believe you already all know what's interesting about me." Raldora says as she continues to page through Lorrimors last research. "I still need to introduce you to Dux, but that can wait till... huh." She stops as she comes across something interesting.

"It looks like the professor was investigating a 'Father Charlatan.'. According to this, he was a con artist that used false rituals of healing to get people to give him money. Ended up in Harrowstone before it burned down... I wonder if the professor thought he was involved in some way?"

Kendra wrote:
I don’t have to tell you that citizens of Ravingro are very suspicious of and intolerable of outsiders, you’ve already witnessed this firsthand at the Restlands.

"That's putting it mildly." Raldora murmurs as Kendra begins to lead Windom to the study. She follows as well, knowing that she'd have much less luck than the others trying to find information elsewhere. Once there, she began poking around any documents that seemed like they had been disturbed more recently than others.

She wasn't a researcher by any means, but she did manage to find one thing of interest at least...

"Harrowstone was the name of the place Lorrimor's journal mentioned the cultists were, right? Says here that it is a prison... sorry, wait, it was a prison, but there was a fire in 4661 and it hasn't been used since then... must have left it ruined. I imagine the damage was extensive, and the prisoners either fled or dead. Probably the latter, given what Lorrimor was saying about ghosts."

"It almost sounds as if you were talking of shadows, Dr. Alderly. If you wanted more information about me and my kind, you need only have asked. No need to delve into oh-so-dangerous tomes." While her words might sound sarcastic, the tone and a slight smile show that she's merely poking fun at Alderly.

Her mouth drops as she returns to seriousness. "I think we're in agreement that we're going to do something about this, yes? The question is, do we, or rather you, ask for help from the townsfolk, or do we do this ourselves?"

Raldora shakes her head in amazement as the last line is read. "That is quite the impressive foresight, in several respects. Makes me wonder if he picked us in particular for some other reason..."

She frowned as she continued, "It sounds like whatever was happening was already reaching its conclusion when he wrote that though, and that was what, over a fortnight ago? Either whatever was going to happen didn't, he managed to delay them before... well. Or it had some other effect. I'm not sure which worries me more."

Apparently less than 15 minutes from when you posted, given that it's already been switched over (not the name, but it says "Game Master GM Nitemare" for me at least).

Heh, had a feeling I should have checked in earlier today :p

On that note, is there any way for me to get the forums to ping me with an e-mail whenever there's a new post? Might help make sure I don't get too distracted by other stuff to check in, it's a problem I tend to start having after a game loses steam for any reason...

Female Fetchling Summoner (Shadow Caller) [ HP: 9/9 | AC: 14 T: 12 FF: 12 | F: +1 R: +1 W: +1 | Init: +2 Perc: 0 | Effects: none]

I am actually still around, if we can find someone to take over I'm all for it!

After a week and a half without any activity from the GM on any of his Aliases that I can see, and no forewarning, I think I'm going to call this abandoned.

Unfortunate, really. I thought we had some good group dynamics going here :(

Not sure if you're waiting for someone or just busy Spring... but I think we're all ready to move on (or at least have Windom zip in and out, either way the mood for talking's pretty much dead at this point w/o new input).

Or at least, that's my take on it.

Raldora sighs to herself, "They never take things at face value..."

She turns to Windom, "I arrived just in time to attend the funeral and was ready to leave directly afterwards without needing to resupply. I have everything I need with me already. Thank you for the offer though."

"And perhaps you should pay more attention to what is said, Alderly. I clearly remember hearing something like 'an awkward legal situation' in regards to them in the will, and nothing about actual danger."

"Besides... erring on the side of caution is not a bad thing, Alderly, but if we do assume that the books are inherently dangerous, then might it be smarter not to look at them? Otherwise we might unleash something we weren't expecting and aren't prepared, or able, to stop." Raldora maintains the same tone as Alderly did throughout.

"I think he meant they were dangerous to have, not that they were dangerous in and of themselves." Glancing to make sure that Kendra had left the room, Raldora continued, "I agree with Windom though, I'm certain there's something more to this than the obvious. One or two of us... and not me in particular... would make much more sense if this was just supposed to be a 'help her out then carry these books' request."

"To that point... I believe I mentioned this, but I am a summoner. I'll introduce you to my eidolon later, once Kendra has settled down a bit."

Raldora smiles as she waves off Rhia's concern. "It's quite all right, to be honest I should probably have expected it from associates of Lorrimor's." She then turns to Alderly. "This is but my second time traveling this way for just that reason. The first is actually when I met the professor the first time, on the side of the road after being ran out of a town. I must say, I have been wondering why he would call me here. We had fairly extensive written communication, but..."

She shrugs. "I suppose we'll see shortly."

Raldora smiles as Windom catches on, and doesn't appear to have much of a problem with it - neither did the others, from what she could tell, though Alderly didn't interject before Windom and Aconitus began speaking. She gave him a moment to do so, but didn't want to wait too long.

As she saw Ysmerelda walk back in with a tray, she decided she had waited long enough, and spoke up. "Dr. Aconitus, you wondered what living on the Shadow Plane would do a person. Living in such a place causes many changes, both physical and magical in nature. What an outsider would experience after a time, I cannot say for sure. After a few generations, however, you end up with individual with features like this..."

Raldora pulls her hood back, revealing her light-grey skin and snow-white hair. "...and these." She pulls the smoked goggles off, blinking a few times as her eyes, pupiless and glowing yellow with just a touch of green mixed in, readjust to the light.

"My name is Raldora. I am a fetchling, summoner, and traveler. A combination that requires I avoid revealing myself when passing though... less than accepting towns such as this one. I apologize for the caution; I presumed, correctly I hope, friends of the late professor would not discriminate based on what I am, but I didn't want to do the sudden reveal either. I did not wish to alarm you."

If you feel like looking it up, Raldora's eyes are approximately this color: #DFFF00

If I'm not mistaken, a DC10 check, untrained, is enough for some basic information.

On that note, how would you like us to handle rolls in situations like this? Seems kind of silly to do two posts back to back, with the first being little more than "I try to remember things about X"...

Raldora gave a single chuckle at Windom's comment. "Really? I hadn't noticed," she said, with just the slightest hint of sarcasm.

She was glad they were in off the streets now, out of the public eye. As far as she could tell, nobody had gotten a good look at her, but still she kept her cowl down, keeping her face in shadow best she could. Soon though, she wouldn't be able to hide what she was for much longer... but perhaps it wouldn't matter.

These were all acquaintances or friends of the Lorrimor... If anyone in this town is going to not freak out, it's them. Still, best not to make it too sudden.

Double checking to make sure she was not too visible from the street (if applicable), Raldora sweeps her gaze over the assembled guests, minus whoever the one who ran off was (Ysmerelda, if she remembered the woman's story right). "Tell me, what do you all know of fetchlings?"

Coffin Carrying

Raldora nods as Kendra responds. "I defer to your judgement. I wished only to share my thoughts on the matter. With luck, the others' defense might actually get them to think for once, as well."

Stories

Raldora chose to stay quiet, still not wanting to draw attention to herself and have someone realize she wasn't 'normal'. That's not to say she didn't pay attention however, especially when some of the other bearers told stories. Lorrimor had specifically requested they all attend, and Raldora had a feeling it wasn't just for heavy lifting...

While the academic man on the other side of the coffin starts on his obviously obtuse counterargument, Raldora does her best to get Kendra's attention. Assuming she does so, the fetchling motions Kendra over, and talks just loudly enough that the other coffin bearers can hear.

"I've had experience with these people before. They're the type that would gladly exhume your father not five minutes after you leave, just because they don't understand how necromancy works. I know it's not what you, and maybe he, wanted, but..." she forgoes saying the obvious conclusion. She really didn't want to make a scene, but a bit of 'inconvenience' now might save worse later.

A fitting day for a funeral I suppose. At least the weather makes my 'condition' a bit more plausible.

Raldora was standing on the fringes of the crowd, not too difficult given that many of the villagers were electing to give her a wide birth. Her and others, she had been pleased to note when she had arrived. Being one of several oddities would decrease the chance of her being singled out... and she had no intention of doing that again.

And so there she was, standing in the middle of a plaza. With a cloak. And smoked goggles. Pretending she was sun-sensitive so the poor villagers didn't have to deal with seeing a white-haired, dusk-skined, glowing-eyed monster from the pit or something.

It's not that she didn't want to be here. She just wished 'here' had been one of the cities, where the worst she got was an odd glance or a double-take. At least then she wouldn't feel apprehensive about going up to give her condolences to Lorrimer's daughter...

Female Fetchling Summoner (Shadow Caller) [ HP: 9/9 | AC: 14 T: 12 FF: 12 | F: +1 R: +1 W: +1 | Init: +2 Perc: 0 | Effects: none]

Everything should be modified as requested (plus a few things I realized I had missed). I'll make a stat-line for Dux as well and have it in the first line of all in-game posts I make: same stats, plus a Summoned/Unsummoned notice.

As for progression, my opinion depends upon our rate of progress overall. I don't mind too much either way however, so whichever you think is best. I know next to nothing about the campaign other than what was in the players guide, so I probably won't notice the difference.

Female Fetchling Summoner (Shadow Caller) [ HP: 9/9 | AC: 14 T: 12 FF: 12 | F: +1 R: +1 W: +1 | Init: +2 Perc: 0 | Effects: none]

Hey everyone! I think I've mentioned this, but this will be my first PbP on these boards, so feel free to give pointers if you think I might be missing something :)

I'll get my equipment sorted out shortly, but like I said in the Recruitment thread, I'm not intending to get anything outside of normal traveling gear *except* for the smoked goggles. Also, is it possible to tweak my campaign trait benefit from Mage Armor to my Disguise Self SLA? It would fit better with the fluff of it, I think.

Wow, I really goofed there... shows what you get for rushing a post just before bed. >.<

Aldra = Raldora = Me. Also, in case I've forgotten to mention it elsewhere, I'm EST.

Expanding on what Ysmerelda said:

Typically, your application will consist of two to four things - Your stat block (or 'crunch') your background, and optionally your appearance and personality.

Crunch - This is your character sheet, in a text-block format. Look at some of the completed applications to get an idea of what you need to put in it (hint: just about everything). Some DMs I've had/attempted to join on other sites have said this part is not needed until after you have been selected, just FYI.

Background - This is where you sell you and your character. As you can probably see, there's not near enough space for all of us to play at once. This is normal, since there tends to be many more players than GMs in nearly every format I can think of. Your background is your proving ground for your ability to tell a story, as well as the quality of your character concept.

Appearance/Personality - These can be worked into your background in some way, or created separately. Either works.

It's worth noting that, while the background can be in any perceptive you want, it's generally expected that your in-game posts will be in 'Third-Person Limited' and will not commit assumptions of success. For example:

////////

Go.

Raldora pulsed the thought to Dux as the goblin looked away. Her eidolon, anticipating the command, had already been tensed to spring and did so immediately. Its shadowy form stretched slightly as it quickly traveled the distance between the bush and the presumably unaware goblin. The goblin would not be unaware for long, however, as Dux landed behind behind it and attempted to rip it to pieces with tooth and claw.

////////

Notice that I used presumably unaware and attempted to rip. For all I know, the goblin may have known I was hiding in the bushes and was about to call for help, or I might roll 2's on my attack rolls and Dux will miss completely. While some assumptions are ok, such as that the goblin will know something is up when it's either dodging or being hit by a shadow beast, in general you can't assume anything not under your direct control will act as you expect, nor can you assume you will roll high enough to confirm whatever action you are taking.

"Interesting to see what her new approach will be to not getting chased out of Ustalav this time."

Well, Dux (her Eidolon) won't be out for one :P Otherwise, I'm thinking a heavy cloak, smoked goggles, keep her head down, don't call attention to oneself, and Disguise Self as a 10-minute emergency pass... Plus she's not intending to stick around forever. Depending on the specifics (I have no idea how big the town is etc etc) she may even just be intending a quick arrive-say goodby-leave.

Alternatively... would it be possible to apply the Campaign trait to the Disguise Self SLA instead of a normal spell? It would work better thematically for the background, and it would give me a 20-minute window.

As for mechanics, just planning the typical 'buff Eidolon, sic Eidolon, watch blood fly and support as needed'. Or Shadow Summon various nasties if the situation prohibits having Dux being summoned On that note, will you allow the Augment Summoning feat to work on my Summon class ability? It's not quite RAW I believe, but the non-archtype ability essentially is just a time-buffed form of the normal summons...

It's all good. Hardly a unique or even rare concept, especially given the Master Chemyst PrC pretty much requiring the alter-ego trope to be played straight.

I've been wanting to play a Summoner as well for a while anyway, and the Shadow Caller in particular... well, let's just say the backstory related to Dux (the eidolon) will fit Carrion Crown pretty well too. ;)

Well darn, forgot you had to have an account over there to see those... Apparently 'public' does not mean, well, public. I'll have to get to work transferring everything over then...

For the record, I have the 'Inspired' trait.

Aldra here. Aconitus more or less sniped my Alchemist concept, so I switched over to Summoner. A Shadow Caller, to be precise.

Background and basic crunch is up already, will work on the rest (inc. Eidolon) shortly.
