About Palladia Countbreaker

Palladia Background:

Palladia was meant to be the latest in a unit series of Aspis Consortium combat androids designed to be sold as covert assassinations that do not require social interaction. The line stretched back to The Gap, the same body undergoing Renewal every 100 years. She was meant to be Gag-30-4--”gag” as a joke about the line’s lack of social skills, “30” because her body was the 30th made under her particular specs, and “4” because she was the 4th soul to inhabit this particular body. Her rebelliousness made itself clear early, a fact that frustrated her handlers as much as her complete lack of subtlety. Her unit series was designed to be all-male, and her assignment was no different, but she quickly asserted otherwise. She was almost forcibly “retired,” but her divergence from her predecessors was so extreme that the science division demanded she be kept around to study; she had begun to display some intriguing emergent abilities with entropy manipulation, and the science division wanted to establish whether this was the cause of her personality or the other way around. In an effort to salvage some of her usefulness, her handlers readjusted her training to that of a more frontline fighter. The head scientist, Cleon, came up with outlandish and extreme tests, each surpassing the last, until finally he had the idea to test her emotional reactions by forcing her to fight one of her brother units—Gag-29-4—to the death, only revealing so after she had killed him. As she looked at her brother’s visage, the years of abuse and constraint finally broke something in her. More than anything, she just wanted to be left alone, to finally have no one making demands upon her. She does not remember much of the details of what happened after that, but she does know that she killed almost ten people. Sadly, Cleon was not among them.

That was three years ago. In the time since, she gave herself a new name and identity, one that fits her much better. She took the name Palladia because she liked how it sounded and the last name Countbreaker as a promise that she will never let anyone try to number her again. She knew from her training that she was not suited for the regimented, controlled life of a soldier, so she has been taking odd jobs to make her way in the meantime. Contract work suits her as it lets her avoid getting tied down too long, but in her private moments, she does admit to the loneliness getting to her. She is not yet ready to admit to herself that she is hoping to find a good crew of friends, family, and perhaps even a woman to love with all this wandering.

Palladia Appearance:

Despite only mentally being in her early-twenties, Palladia’s body looks like that of a hard-edged mercenary in her mid-to-late 30s, having been put through the wringer again-and-again by the past three generations of inhabitants and kept maintained only as much as the Consortium considered profitable. The tattoo-like circuits signature to androids have all been taken to with a knife so that they no longer glow, another choice by the Consortium to “enhance the unit’s stealth potential” and now appear more like complex scars. She is a compact 5’5” and built like a gymnast. Her hair is dyed completely orange-red, and someday she would like to get her android circuits repaired so they glow a similar color. Her fierce brow and constant frown leave her always looking displeased.

Palladia Personality:

Palladia is a focused, professional person with a bit of a temper. She tends to react straight-faced to jokes and—when she has one at all—has a desert-dry sense of humor. The most emotion she tends to ever show is when she is really wrapped up in the throes of battle, which can see her laughing and shouting and hollering as she dashes about the battlefield. She has more than a few problems with authority and will act contrarian on principle towards powerful people or organizations who expect to coerce her into cooperation. She is much more agreeable on the individual level. She gets flustered easily when women flirt with her but shuts men down immediately and coldly.

Character Prompt:

The alien, a spider-like being that looks to be made of translucent crystals, swiftly moves to block you from proceeding down the space station corridor. It's body flashes rhythmically in bright reds and dull oranges as it makes a series of popping and crackling sounds similar to fireworks while pointing at the grenade on your belt.

Palladia stares back at the creature, scowling all the while. She runs through all the languages that she knows—and the Consortium made sure she knows plenty—trying to see if it reacts to one of them. Not expecting any of them to work, but it’s always worth trying when someone seems to want to talk. When she gets a whole lot of nothing in response, she sighs and shakes her head. She already sucks at reading peoples’ faces when they are humanoid, so there’s no way she’s gonna make sense of this thing just by looking.

Time to try to reason it out then. This creature seems to want the grenade in particular, and she assumes it must know what a grenade is and what it does. She hates it when people assume she is stupider than she is just because she thinks differently, so she always makes sure to extend that courtesy to others that might get written-off as weird. The creature sounds like an explosion itself, so maybe it eats grenades? Or maybe it’s trying to warn that something will set it off if she proceeds? Benevolent or neutral actions make more sense, as if it wanted to kill her, it could just try slicing her up with those crystals. Still, it could be trying to be clever and dispose of her without getting its appendages dirtied. Yet...its limbs don’t seem to be articulated properly to throw a grenade itself, so it’s extra unlikely that it would just throw the grenade back in her face. She finally nods to herself as an approach comes together.

She unhooks the grenade from her belt and holds it up. ”You want this?” She makes sure the safety is on, holds it up to show the creature the safety is on, then rolls it back down the corridor she was approaching from. ”All yours.” She steps aside to allow it to pass. One grenade is no big loss. She prefers to fight face-to-face anyways.
