While the irony of Olivia's words sting, the preacher does not show it. Elk Pater... You tell us that 'ardship is part of every season... I will bear this burden like t' lean time for t' 'unter, t' draught for t' farmer and this blight that 'adenveigh bears... Stoicly Obadiah trudges onward, briefly looking around himself to garner what knowledge he can; Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Seeing his village threatened by the yoke of technology and the tyranny of sorcery, Obadiah sees red; Shouting proud and clear to his folk, the preacher selflessly rushes the drow mage; Elk Pater! Defend thy folk... guide my arm and strike down t' enemies o' 'adenviegh! O' the Hearth! and O'FREEDOM!" Cold Iron Sickle Attack aka Forlorn Hope!:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23 Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 Critical Threat: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17 Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Iron Kingdoms - love it... more of that vibe please :) Obadiah scours the mechanical giant with cold eyes; Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17 Sensing the spellcaster has control of the iron death dealer, the preacher searches his faith and teachings for a course of action to best the mage and his piston-puppet; Knowledge - Arcana; 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Obadiah draws a bead on the steam-jotunn as it approaches; Mother Winter's Teats! - is t'er nay end to t' infernal mechanisations! I fear my comrades 'ave failed in t'er task... The preacher aims at the behemoth lumbering forth; Elk-Father let my arras fly true and pierce this brutes metallic 'ide... Invokes Smiting Judgement Readied Bow Attack - MW Arra: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Obadiah grimly smiles at the assembled leaders; "What kind o' 'unter would I be without returning t' 'ome with a prize!" He pushes Olivia forward "Nay M'lady... If t'attacks 'ave ceased it is more down t' me companions endevours than me own..." With a more hushed tone he continues; "... This is Olivia... she 'as grim tayd'ings t' share... on our saviours t' Flameslingers and more... Should she telle all I'd urge t' wise council save her from t' rope..." Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13 (to at least consider her fate) The preacher wearily nods at Olivia, to tell her tale...
Obadiah's eyes flash angrily at Olivia's comment; "Aye these are t'people who thee preyed upon with your 'ellish cog-dead... Now 'ush wench and you may yet see t' blessing of another sunrise..." The preacher pushes the woman to her knees and draws his bow-string, shouting to the wall as he does; "HAIL 'ADENVEIGH! IF T'TIDE IS QUELLED, THEN IT IS MY FELLOWS WHO ARE T' 'EROES... THIS ONE... SHE 'AS TIDINGS FOR T' COUNCIL AND THEM ALONE!" Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Gathering his gear, Obadiah nods at his friends council, but the resolve in his eyes is clear; "Iadenviegh must be told of t' deceit within their walls and 'earthstones! Should I make it alive, I'll try and find this company but go I must brother..." With that he clasps Damrung's forearm and nods to the others, before beginning a measured jog: "Luck of t' 'unter to you all lads. I 'ope to see you again... in this life or t'next!" Thanks guys -been a blast, hope that once commitments die down Obi will be back - even if its as a cog-dead lol. Enginehouse: Hope this is good enough for a parting dialogue - will let you know if RL abates any!
Guys just to give everyone the heads up on my current situation I work at Uni here in Aberdeen and due to staffing issues my support/teaching commitment is now much higher than I anticipated. term has just started but I typically get very busy very quickly. In addition to this I'm running my own pbp and have 2 long standing games that I'm part of - as a result I'm having to reluctantly take a back seat on the other pbp games I'm involved with. This game particularly is one that deserves more input that I can afford over the coming weeks... Enginehouse has very kindly kept the door open for me, Obadiah is planning on leaving the group, returning to Iadenveigh with the plan to expose the treachery they are suffering. Caveat would be I could [Rl and your goodselves permitting] re-join sometime down the line... This has been a very tough decision as the game and group are excellent - I've been pushed in some tight RP corners and loved every minute of it. Still trying to get a proper handle on Obadiah, so really hope that I'll be back sometime down the line. Plan is I'll play out the current combat, then have Obadiah depart for Iadenveigh [and a unlife as a cog zombie no doubt lol]. Just wanted you all to know what we've been deliberating. Cheers BD
Enginehouse: No probs, should have taken my chance rather than attempting a drawn out scene lol. Am happy to see out this combat (will be a nice sign off opportunity and renew the group's faith that Obadiah can at least shoot a mean longbow!) Agree that we should let everyone know though... want me to address it here as a matter of priority or post combat? Again thanks for the flexibility. Hopefully I'll be back in the fold once things settle here and the lynchings are done in Iadenveigh!
As he trudges towards his dwarven companion Obadiah shoots the occasional glance back at Salvin and Corlit; Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26 He stops. Catching words on the wind... and turns... calling out to Corlit in a clear, strong voice; "Sacrifice t' few t' save t' many eh? Out here Corlit... YOU are t' few... you'd do well to remember that..."
At Salvin's words Obadiah shakes his head, his hands remaining empty; "No Salvin, I'll not be loosing my bow on 'is like again... least not until I reach Iadenviegh... He secures his pack and only then does he ready his bow. "Iadenviegh 'as to be told of t' treachery of these Helix snakes! I plan to return to them... alone... and t' Elk Father willing rejoin you once my 'ome is secure..." He looks down thoughtfully to the water and then to his comrades... "Per'haps it will be an opportunity for all those to temper their stances, for cooler 'eads to prevail. For t' fires of wrath within me shall not be abated until Iadenviegh is informed and free of this enemy within..." The preacher then turns and slowly makes his way towards Damrang.
Obadiah gives Gregory and unconcerned look; "Nae. Not t' kill, merely to offer a chance at the redemption he clearly feels he does not need..." Turning his attentions back to Corlit, Obadiah smiles once again as he holds the man over the edge; "Beyond that waterfall lies your 'ated foes in t' Delve. Should I drop you, you will not die... merely to flounder like a spawning salmon... waiting to die? And when THEY return... you will die. In a manner not pleasant nor quick I'll wager... 'he choice is yours - a vessel for spite or one with t' Elkfather in 'is 'eart?" Not sure if I can try Diplomacy or Intimidation to "convert" him? If I can Obadiah will cast Guidance first to aid his cause: Father Erastil let this lost soul follow your guide arrow bright and clear. Let 'im take t'old ways once again into 'is 'eart... Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 OR
EngineHouse: Yeah absolutely. I work at Uni here in Aberdeen and my support/teaching commitment looks much higher than anticipated. Its Freshers week so will have until teaching proper kicks off next Monday to tie things up. Hugely appreciate you keeping the spot open for me - once my work settles down to a manageable workload I'll have a much better handle of things. Was just concious that I don't want to just input "Obiadiah nods in agreement" type posts, your rich game deserves way more than that. With some luck it won't be too long before the luddite preacher is back in the ranks!
EngineHouse: Not sure how the current situation will play out, however due to RL workload getting insane (as well as running my own PbP, and being part of two long running pbp games) I'm considering reluctantly taking a back seat with this game. While I'm not asking to keep the door open, my natural reaction regards Obadiah would be for him to return to Iadenviegh and relay the news of the Helix betrayal to the people (most importantly) and the council (if they can still be trusted). Of course Obadiah's planned "Boardwalk Empire baptism" may well kick things off somewhat. Don't want to just call the game quits - having way too much fun with Obadiah and the game is a cracking one - credit to you, but I'm getting too stretched at present. Thus wanted to moot a creative exit strategy with your good self and the possiblity of keeping Obi's return an option down the line? (I do however realise that might not be an option and a glorious death will also suffice - just don't make him a cog-dead, Gregory would find the irony too delicious lol).
Obadiah pats Corlit gently on the shoulder as he speaks plainly; “Punishment is not for revenge, but to lessen crime and reform t’ criminal. You Corlit, I fear, are beyond redemption... but per'haps t' water will cleanse your sins...” Obadiah grabs the prisoner and begins dragging him like a bale of hay towards the waterfall and stream. As he does he sermonises; ”What MAKES thee unclean, cannot make me unclean, but THOU canst make me unclean!"
Obadiah smiles at the desperate accusations of Corlis; When justice is done, it is a joy to t' righteous but terror to evildoers... "T' last lynching was indeed 6 months ago... Ale tainted with sky tech caused strong men to weaken, and women to lose their children... So aye we of Iadenveigh 'ung t' uncaring poisoner in't question." He kneels down close to Corlis, still smiling grimly, his book branded with the antlers of Erastil raised high; "T' Parables tell us that one drop of poison can spoil all of t' milk... When I look t your 'eart Corlis... I see naught but poison..."

Yeah I foresee this happening - especially if someone rocks up with a John Deere, then Obidiah could be an instant convert lol. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy Obi in full Machine Gun Preacher mode [with some Eli Sunday thrown in] :)
I am Obadiah. I am Erastil’s Bow. I am Iadenviegh. Wound me I shall heal. Deceive me I shall discern. Wrong me I shall avenge. Obadiah looks down at her words with a mixture of pity and disdain; ”T’Parables teach us that greed is the blight on a community and on t’ man. Greed makes a good man lie and an evil one worse. Your archmagus is clearly t’latter and rest assured as these good men are my witnesses I’ll spare ‘im no mercy for the death and misery ‘is greed ‘as wrought.” Eyes full of zeal Obadiah gestures forcefully towards Olivia with the weathered, deerskin book gripped in his hand; ”REDEMPTION is at ‘and! It is yours to 'arvest as you will. RENOUNCE your archmagus! ‘elp our cause, ‘elp Iadenviegh and in doing so ‘elp your very soul… Then... and only then per’haps, t’ ledger can be balanced…”
Regards the war and its morales... While Obadiah doesn't condone torture, or mass murder, he also won't think of the ramifications of "winning this war". His view is very blinkered (at present) due to the slaughter and death visited upon Iadenveigh... His zeal is somewhat "black/white" and he's trying to fit "shades of grey" that we encounter into that scale... its not working and he'll struggle with that... Looking over Erastil's ethos more, perhaps Obadiah seeks to "convert" these tech-orientated enclaves and show them how co-operation and traditional methods will reap the best rewards?
@EngineHouse; I'm one of these players who likes to think ahead for characters, get a feel how they might progress [not just in terms of mechanics], but character & characterisation Guess my "light at the end" comment, was a reflection on my own feelings regarding Obadiah - definately not the game itself. This discussion has actually helped that process as I'm much more aware of potential development for Obadiah :) Salvin's definately not forcing the hands of the others - if anything our decisions are forcing him into a corner, but like you very rightly put EH - internal challenges are just as fun as external ones. Thanks for t'input lads, my zeal 'as been renewed :) Engine'ouse? Wit' name like that no small wonder 'e'll favour t' technomongers! ;)
This is an interesting and pretty timely debate. While I'm loving playing in the group and as Obadiah, I have been struggling of late to see the "light at the end of the tunnel" for him. I originally envisioned him as a good hearted, but revenge driven farmer who has taken Erastil's teachings as gospel - faith filling the void of his loss as it were. I've played up the Luddite nature of the character too as I'm concious that tech was the [apparent] cause of his family [and community's] peril. Hoever given that tech may well play an increasing role in the game I struggling to see how Obadiah will square that off. In my mind's eye I did see a potential point where Damrang and himself walked... Also not sure if LG or LN is a better fit alignment wise as he's been pretty black, white and blinkered in his views. Should tech be a saviour and not the root of all evil I could see a crisis of faith for Obi lol... As for Salvin [apologies meant to address this first but seem to have went off on one!] - Mark nailed it as I also see Salvin as potentially the sole voice of reason here... He is the anchor and the balance holder - the redeemer and the truth seeker in a world where lies, half truths and personal prejudices cloud more than the Choking Tower itself... On a pure flavour note might not a Falchion be a better shout as your primary weapon? Just my 6 runes worth lol
Obadiah impassively stares down at the bound Helix mages; Three things cannot be long hidden: t' sun, t' moon, and t' truth... "You fine Helix mages fail to realise t' gravity of your situation... We need information, we need the truth... Not the 'alf truths you spouted previously but everything..." The farmer of the Elkfather looks at the sky, then back at the prisoners; "Left out 'ere... once its dark... t' cog-dead will come for ye... Then NO amount o' training will stop you from screaming..." Intimidate: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Obadiah nods "I can but try Damrang... Will be a difficult shot, but t'Elk Father will guide me..." He raises his bow, notches an arrow and as an incantation of Erastil fills his mind; O, bend t' bow in powerful prayer
Cast True Strike
Obadiah nods at his fellow Iadenviegher's curse and question; "Our 'and was forced Damrang... tho' by 'er arrogance or Master Vhailor's diplomacy I cannot say... Reagrdless we'll need your rope to bind them." He then walks over to where his broken arrow lies, tuts and drops it back to the ground as he mulls over the recent event; "Seems to me that 'ad this "Order o' t' Helix" been armoured and carrying firearms and such - this would 'ave gone differently..." The farmer looks less than best pleased as he walks over to assist the securing of their prisoners.
Obadiah silently passes judgement on the mages; Elk Father if they truly are foes, let my arra fly just... Invoke Judgement of Justice (+1 to hit) as swift action. He aims and stoicly lets fly at Olivia with a whistling arrow* Longbow Attack: 1d1 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 Longbow Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2 * Whistling Arrow: Makes keening sound which is audible within 500 feet of the flight path.
As the mage demonstrates her power Obadiah calmly raises his bow and draws back the string; Guide my judgement Elk Father... "M'Lady you would do well not to threaten my companion. Erastil tells us that t' bounty of t' forest is t' woodsman's to take. Surely then bounty of war is t' soldiers to keep? And make no mistake - We of Iadneviegh ARE at war... against who or what exactly is yet to be diserned..." He nods towards her; "So please lower thy 'and, or by Old Deadeye, t' crows will pick on your eyes afore this day is done..."
Obadiah stands wearing a sincere smile while further scrutinising the mages before him; Her words twist like a forest path Elk Father... Yet is the destination one fair or fell? "T' Parables tell us that honestly is the 'earthstone of any meeting between strangers... Words should be clear like t' forest brook and honest like a day of toil in t' fields... You say that t' Delve is a city and it is their mad leader that is our common foe aye? So pray tell why do you 'elix fight?" His voice is honest and words candid: Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
As he watches, arrow notched but not aimed he mulls the words; Ah must act. Iadenviegh's voice must be 'eard... Obadiah slowly rises, walks forward and with a voice clear addresses the disembodied speaker; "They are not alone. Obadiah of Iadenveigh stands with them. Pray tell me true "voice without a face" - what do you know of t' cog-powered dead that plague my village..?"
