We’re coming up on Red Flags, and after the DM passed on the character concepts we were to roll up, I thought I’d try to recreate my Varisian Investigator under the PF2 rules. Under PF1 he is a fiddler/singer, nomadic as most “gypsy” Varisians tend to be (as opposed to their city-dwelling cousins), uses a starknife or bombs usually, dabbled as a healer, and is loosely modeled after a “Sherlock Holmes” type of character.

I’m contemplating a Lore Muse Bard, Human (Varisian) ancestry, Entertainer or Nomad background, Skilled (Crafting) heritage, Alchemist archetype (with some attempt at modifying it for 1.6 changes to Alchemist although there’s no official rules for that.

I’m also contemplating a Bomber or Chirurgeon Alchemist with some cognitive mutagen recipes, Human (Varisian) ancestry, Entertainer or Nomad background, Skilled (Performance) heritage, and maybe bard archetype (lore muse).

Obviously, Inspiration from the PF1 class is not able to be recreated, and during the play test I don’t want to ask for a house-rule feat to make that happen.

Has anyone else thought about recreating an Investigator under PF2 rules? Any thoughts about the two variations above?

Am I correct that skill increases apply only to actual skills, and not to armor/weapons/saves/spellcasting/perception/etc due to classes having class features where some of these are specifically stated they are increased to the next level?

Secondly, does anyone else feel like the number of skill increases are too few for all but rogues? In doing the playtest, when leveling up rogues, I feel like my skill progression is similar to what we've experienced in Pathfinder and D&D3.5, while all other classes seem to be increasingly left behind on skill progression, with very few trained skills and maybe only one skill trained any higher than that. With certain skiil checks being restricted to certain mastery levels, I feel like more skill increases are necessary. So far this effect seems to get worse as characters level up to higher levels (I know, we're only at level 9 so far, so maybe this will change at still higher levels).

Did I miss any changes to Assurance in the latest Update?

According to my reading, with the revamped rules for Difficulty Classes in update 1.3, Assurance lets you only pass Easy tasks at levels 1-3, again at levels 7 and 8 if you are an Expert in the skill you have Assurance in, and never again. You can never succeed at any harder tasks, because Assurance includes "(do not apply any of your bonuses, penalties, or modifiers)."

Assurance needs to be modified, probably along one of these two lines:
1) to drop this, making it a "Take 10" rule that will allow the result to increase as your character levels up, which will allow a character to pass Easy tasks automatically and, depending on the relevant stat, pass Medium tasks automatically as well.
2) build this into skills: all tasks must be rolled for untrained skills, rolls for trivial tasks are passed automatically when a character is trained or better in a skill, rolls for trivial and easy tasks are passed automatically when a character is Expert or better in a skill, rolls for trivial, easy, and medium tasks are passed automatically when a character is Master in a skill, and all hard or easier tasks are passed automatically when a character is Legendary in a skill.
