I want to echo Alex's sentiments about PaizoCon - it was great getting to be there, and meet so many people in person (especially those that previously were only "virtual" acquaintances). Also seeing the energy in the Org. Play room the whole weekend was motivating, energizing, and rewarding for me personally. I hope that I get to meet even more of the awesome people in our community at GenCon.

Also, congrats to all of the new coin holders, especially one of my partners in crime - David Peever! Welcome all of you to the club, for each and everyone of you has earned your place at the table.

With his show of strength, Ulvard is able to get their attention, putting them into a position of listening to others. As they listen, they both seem to brush off Jinlong's logic as being just a little too broad to really apply to what either of them are saying, and start to argue again. before they get far, Gnavy and Nic are able to refocus them on the seriousness of the concerns. They then patiently listen to Zelen, though they think their arguments leave something to be decided. However, Watson's stories of the undead and what they can do are enough to get the pain to stop in their tracks, finally realizing the danger that their childish exchange has cause the group. Silently liking their mental wounds, and realizing that neither of them has won, they sulk over to opposite sides of the campfire to share in the dinner that Andri has prepare (a roast mutton stew, filled with potatoes and carrots).

The meal itself is a bit more somber than the journey has been so far, with the fear of retribution for the noise hanging over all present. In the quiet stillness, it is not surprising that the passengers retire to the individual tents almost as soon as the last bits are scooped from their plates. Arek watches the others as they go to bed down, and then looks over at you, "You all have a plan for tonight, I hope? Or are you planning to just sleep and see what happens?".

This would be a good point for you to determine what your night watch looks like, if you choose to keep watch. If you do do that, it would be a simple split of three shifts for the night. This part should be simple, so I plan to check back in before bed tomorrow to keep us moving.

Ok - so first my apologies. Between PaizoCon and real life medical I got behind, and then posting again has been causing anxiety cause it was late, which would then cycle and get worse until I was much further behind here than I thought - and for that I am really, really sorry. (I also just realized I had the PM on here, I'm not the best at noticing them at times). CanisDirus got in touch with me earlier and I talked this out, and I think I am okay to pick this back up as long as y'all are okay keeping me as your GM. I am planning to try and get the post up moving us forward before I head to bed this evening.

It will be first come, first serve when event sign-ups open, starting on May 4th for GMs.

If you are interested in trying to GM, send an email to paizoorgplayhq@gmail.com. We will work to see if we can fit you in where we have holes in our schedule. This goes for online as well as in-person.

If you mean signing up for games to play. The games are listed in PaizoCon 2022's Warhorn. Make sure that you filter to only see the games for online play.

This is not open to the public yet, which is why it hadn't been shared. Because gms have some choice in what they are running, we have more games on the schedule than GMs. As such, this schedule will be culled before it is officially shared.

I promise we will have this information out for players to see in time to look it over before player registration opens, and when we do you will see it in a blog.

A suggestion for those who get aggravated by them - look into singers/teachers masks. They are better for long term breathing and projection.

A question for the hive mind, as another VO and I are disagreeing on it.

Cinder's Offer:
Does the damage from this double? the wording is:
On a critical hit, the weapon flares with hellfire and deals an extra 1 point of fire damage and 1 point of evil damage for the attack (2 points of fire and evil damage for levels 5–6).
I said it doesn't, but they think it does, since when you compare it to a crit effect, like that on the rapier, it is not specific.
Rapier: On a critical hit, the weapon adds a weapon damage die of the listed size. Roll this after doubling the weapon's damage.

Thoughts from others? Since it doesn't have the specific language for after - does it double or not?

Hello Northern Dreamer,

The bulk of the shipping is coming from the AP. The coins are only adding about $1.00 to the total shipping. That's still about $1.50 higher than I would have expected going to your address not all that long ago, but it is the result of the increasing shipping rates globally. That was a long winded way of saying that the shipping does look correct.

Ok, thanks. It's still double what the increased amount was last month. I totally understand the global rates going up, but figured with it being double it didn't hurt to check.

Following up as the shipping charges seem high again. I didn't think the two hero points would double the shipping, but if so I understand - Just looking for clarification.

Thing is, GMs who are story focused [b] are [/] going to want to use them because their backgrounds enhance the stories of the one shots. I understand people wanting to play their characters, but as someone who plays and runs a lot, I will take story over mechanics any day.

As far as all of this goes, my home lodge is instituting a "locals" first policy - which we put on our Warhorn - for digital games. We also put our requirements for being considered a local - play 5 games with our lodge. We also gave the role to a few non-locals who have been covering to help give our online GMs a break through this pandemic, and help prevent burnout. Is it perfect? No. But we want something for our people who were here before the pandemic, because it has gotten to the point they are getting shut out of the games. Like many have said before me, at a week out we unlock the game to allow anyone who wants to fill in the seats. Additionally, anyone who wants to GM we will work to find them space, but they do need to reach out to us first.

Ok, I just got my confirmation email and I am concerned... I realize that shipping is an issue across the board, but the shipping for my current order (just a single AP book) has more than doubled? Over $10 for a single AP seems... off. Help?

Y'all first I want to thank you for playing this with me. I know that we have taken longer than a PBP of this length should have, and for that I am sorry. However, this was the first PBP I have ever run, so figuring out timing and posting has been an experience to say the least. I appreciate your willingness to put up with me, and I believe I have figured out some things for if I do this in the future.

I have already finished your chronicle sheets, and you can find them here. If there are any concerns, please let me know. I am going to plan to archive this game sometime early next week, or once I hear from each of you.

Thank you again, and may your dice be in your favor!

Unaffected by Kaden's glare, the zombie looks from Kaden to Garrace, moaning as his long sword critically slices through his flesh. Distracted by the pain, Ansira is able to sneak up behind him and pummel him, watching him fall to the ground as she sneaks back into the foliage.

With that, the immediate threat is over. However, the passengers of the caravan are more antsy than before, and even Arek and Andri seem shaken. Arek looks to you, speaking in a quiet voice, "I think we need to get moving before anyone else comes after us." He then echoes a similar sentiment to the others, moving to quickly gather up the camping supplies and load the wagons. Others move to join him as they shake off their shock, and the camp is broken down much faster than the previous morning.

Once the caravan is packed, the group is able to leave, heading out into the fog. Though the fog remains heavy throughout the morning, the sounds of the forest quiet, and nothing more than the occasional chirping of a bird is heard.

Right before lunch, the caravan enters the bustling town of Caliphas. Once they reach the marketplace, the Graghol's pull the wagons off to the side, and Arek begins to unload. Andri comes over to you, thanking you profusely for your help, admitting clearly that they would not have survived the trip without you. She then pays you each your reward of four gold, and bids you farewell as she goes to help her brother with the wagons.

With that, you have survived your travels on the Tireless Path!

As Simon goes to recall what he knows, he remembers that skeletons are resistant to a lot of different types of damage (cold,
electricity, fire, piercing, and slashing) but that bludgeoning damage seems to be effective against them. Also that they heal from negative energy, and are immune to death effects, disease, paralysis, poison, and becoming unconscious. He then takes his shield to the orange one, bashing into with brute force, but even though it is damaged, it is still standing.

Ansira is able to lay to heavy fists into the large zombie, doing more damage than she thought she had!

Garrace doesn't seem to remember much about zombies, but he is able to hit the orange skeleton twice with his sword, shattering it to bone fragments with the second attack!

Ravant attempts to hurt the last skeleton, but sadly his mace goes wide on both swings.

The blue skeleton swings it's scimitar in retaliation at Ravant, striking him with the first blow for 4 damage. However, the second and third attempts to do so both go wide.

Out of the fog, the undead appear!

While the purple skeleton seems to be unfazed by Kaden's glare, their reaction to his sword is a different story. As Kaden hits them with his scythe, he reaps them into a pile of bones at his feet.

Carrol then looks at the yellow skeleton, releasing a powerful blast of force in their direction that pulverizes them!

However, as the two skeletons fall, Garrace sees a large fist coming at him, but it whooshes past his head. The fist then comes reeling in for a second attempt, but it bangs into his shield, bouncing off and doing nothing.

Striding up to Simon, Yellow and Purple look, snap into attention. Yellow attempts to swing it's scimitar twice at Simon, missing with both. Then Purple comes up next to them, also swinging twice, the first glancing off of his shield, and the second going wide.

Perception, Ravant: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

First Watch
For the second night, Kaden is alert throughout the shift, hearing what sounds like scratching coming from the trees to the south, though they see nothing. Garrace is also on high alert, and hears the sounds of moaning on the winds from the east.

Second Watch
Second watch is again very quiet for Simon, not seeing or hearing anything of concern (though they do spot a small raccoon sneak into the camp with the intent of taking the leftovers from the night before. However, Ansira hears more of the scratching that Kaden decribed when handing off the shift.

Third Watch
Third watch seems to be quiet, and Ravant and Carrol don't hear any of the noises that the others did. As dawn is breaking, the rest of the camp arrises, eager to head on their way, knowing that if they move quickly the group could reach Caliphas by noon.

GM Screeen:

Perception, Ravant: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

As everyone is packing up, Kaden again hears the noises coming from the southeast, and this time Carrol is also certain that they hear the sounds of bones scratching together coming from the south. At the same moment, they realize that something is approaching the camp from the south, giving them time to alert the others to draw their weapons as the undead start their approach!

For this round, you can go in any order. You have the equivalent of one round worth of actions to prepare for the approach of whatever it is that Kaden and Carrol are hearing approach from the southeast. There are two paths that approach from that direction, but the fog is so thick that anything 20ft or further away has concealment.

With speed and desperation, Garrace begins looking around. Using the stars and the traits of the geography, he seems determined to find some passage around the failed bridge.

Though Garrace is determined, he cannot see enough through the fog to be able to navigate, much less find an alternate path around the ravine.

Old Dog Ravant wrote:
Ravant will examine the area around the bridge looking for either an easier way down the embankment either at the bridge or near enough that we could cut a path through the woods.

Ravant also has trouble with finding an alternate path, finding instead many roots - finding them with his feet as he trips over them, realizing that this wouldn't be a safe way for the horses to travel.

Carrol T Rutherford wrote:

Ansira Ashworthy wrote:
Ansira looks at the damaged bridge and tries to direct Carrol and Simon, working as a team to repair it.

Carrol takes the time to inspect what is there of the bridge, and is easily able to find where some patching could be done to repair it. Looking at where Carrol is indicating, Ansira is able to give clear direction to Carrol for advice on the best way to do so. While the two of them discuss the particulars, Simon is able to listen and place the heavy timbers where they tell him, holding them in place while the others nail them steady. Working together, they are able to get the bridge stabilized, and when Garrace and Ravant return the caravan is able to head back on its way.

The rest of the day seems to pass uneventfully, but the other passengers are on edge, jumping at every wisp of wind or snap of a twig. When the wagons finally pull to camp in a small clearing, they work to pitch their tents quickly, then take the roasted potatoes and chicken that Andri makes and retiring for the night. Arek comes over and hands yours to you, asking if you are planning to keep the same watch positions for this night?

You can decide now if you want to keep the order from your watch the night before, or rearrange. Also, if there is anything specific you would like to do, or someone you want to talk to.

First Watch
During first watch, Garrace hears nothing, paying attention to giving Kaden tips on using his scythe. However, Kaden hears twigs cracking in the woods around the camp, seeming to switch sides every time that he steps over to look.

Second Watch
Second watch is very quiet for Ansira and Simon, with them not seeming to hear anything out of the ordinary at all.

Third Watch
During the third watch, Carrol doesn't hear anything amiss. While Carrol is looking at their spells, Ravant hears a faint whisper, as though someone is behind his shoulder. As he looks towards it, he hears twigs cracking in the opposite direction, but is never able to find the source.

As third watch ends, the rest of the caravan starts to rise, however the day has broken with a think fog, one that seems to cover everything around you. Arek and Andri pass out a quick breakfast of wrapped cheese sandwiches, and encourage everyone to load up so that they caravan can keep moving forward. Sadly, the scholar and the farmer still seem to be on terse terms, choosing to not communicate directly as much as they can avoid it.

Once on the road, everything seems to be okay, at least for the first few hours. Then, suddenly Kisaya calls out, "Stop! Don't you hear that? The child out in the forest... she crying for her mother, and we need.. we need to help her!"

GM Screen:

What is it?

Perception, Carrol T Rutherford: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Perception, Ravant: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

However, everyone but Garrace is certain that they heard nothing in the woods. Since Garrace is the only one that seems to believe her, she sits closely next to him, asking him to please protect her from the scary things in the fog.

As she is going on with him, you all feel the wagon suddenly jerk and Arek call out for you to come up front to help. "The bridge ahead seems to be washed out! We need to either find a way over this ravine, or around it, cause just going down the embankment and back up again seems to be a very bad idea..." He looks to you for ideas on how to help fix the bridge, while the rest of the passengers just huddle in their spots.

You need to work together to solve this. Everyone should be doing something, looking towards their wheelhouse for what they think would be their personal best contribution.

Dark Archive

Listening to Kaden's logic, they calm for a moment, and then continue again, seeming to misunderstand Carrol's logic and ignoring the threats of Simon and Garrace. However, at the impassioned words of Ansira, they finally find some quiet within themselves, feeling slightly scolded by the halfling, and the words of their god. Sighing in frustration, and realizing that neither of them has won, they sulk over to opposite sides of the campfire to share in the dinner that Andri has prepare (a roast mutton stew, filled with potatoes and carrots).

This part should be simple, so I plan to check back in before bed tonight to keep us moving.

Dark Archive

As Kaden loads the last of the supplies into the wagons, the passengers start to load in themselves, leaving room for you as well. Once everyone is on board, you feel a jerk as Arek and Andri guide the horses out onto the road. Once everyone is settled in to the rhythm of the journey, the two gentleman passengers will introduce themselves to you.

The half orc introduces himself first. "Brave guards, I am Xanthus Shurgun, and I appreciate your company on this last leg of my journey. As a professor of agricultural research and preservation at the University of Lepidstadt, I have been taking the long journey through the countryside on my way to Caliphas, so that I could make observations and collect notes on the practices that are employed by famers across our... fine country."

As he talks of observation, the dwarf across from him seems to bristle a little, then clears his throat to introduce himself to you. " Good day to you," he says in a thick country accent." As I am one of the farmers that Professor Shurgun is taking notes of, I need to travel to the city to make some agreements with the merchants that facilitate the sale of my produce. As many of them have had their supply chains interrupted by the issues traveling and transporting along the perilous roads, I am hoping that I will be able to build up my own network within the city."

The ride through the afternoon seems to go smoothly, with nothing of note happening as you travel the road into the forest. As the sun starts to set, the wagons are circled into a small clearing, and as Arek starts to unharness and water the horses, Andri gives directions for where the setup individual tents (that are a part of the caravan supplies) and then starts to prepare dinner.

As everyone is working around the camp, the passengers are talking quietly, but enthusiastically with each other. However, this quiet is quickly being violated by an escalating argument between Eigil and Shurgun...

"All you academics are just the same! Sitting in your high towers, reading your books, and never LEARNING anything! You think you know what it takes to grow a tomato, yet you have never gotten a speak of dirt on your hands, much less picked up a shovel! You learn by doing not by just reading a book. In the time it takes you to read up on how to save a crop of beans, they will have withered and died from the over-exposure to the sun that you could have prevented had you known what you were doing from doing it before!" Eigil shouts at the half-orc as his face goes red in frustration.

"How can you presume such nonsense? In studying the information that we gather, we are able to understand the fluctuations in the products that come from the changes in the practices of our ancestors. You need to have the understanding of how a thing works before you can ever attempt to do it - our research provides that to those who do not have the time or energy to devote to learning it. In learning, we can teach; and in teaching, people learn to do. Once they know how to do, they can then do so. So, learning must come before the action!"

As they go back and forth, arguing the importance of knowledge through books versus knowledge learned in practice, their voices get louder and louder. Finally, Andri looks over to you. [b]"Can you do something to calm them down. The louder they get and longer they go on, the more likely we are to attract unwanted attention... And while I know you are capable of defending us, I would prefer if you didn't have too!"[/]

-----------------------------------------------

At this point, you need to decide how you want to approach handling the argument, and the task of calming them down. Think about how your character would best approach the two of them, and roll a skill associated with what you want to do - if you are unsure, just ask. Everyone should be doing something to actively calm them down, as you probably don't want to deal with some of the things that lurk inside the forests of Ustalav.

stories say:
Children's tales tell of such as skeletons and zombies, but also vampire spawn, graveknights, lesser death, and even rumors of Tzitzimitl having been seen by those on the wrong side of the forest

I'm confused. Is PAX a convention where games can be played, or is it a manufacturer's convention? I went to the website, and I'm still confused. There was nothing there about games, other than you must have a $15 gold badge for some things including something called "Tabletopia". Is that the gaming component? I couldn't find anything else about "Tabletopia" on the site.

Valid concerns for sure. PAX Online is going to be an online convention supporting board and table top RPG game play. To participate, anyone is welcome under their basic access, which "PAX Online East will be packed full of compelling content accessible to anyone, anywhere, at no cost at all. This content includes virtually all of our panel content, a PAX Discord server, and of course, full access to all our exhibitor partners. " The $15 badge upgrade allows you to have access to some awesome PAX Online Swag, as well as a week pass to TableTopia, which is a board game virtual tabletop site that hosts a smorgasbord of choices (and where a lot of the tabletop games being focused on at PAX Online are hosted).

As the twins are bustling about the stable yard, you are able to help as you wish.

Carrol T Rutherford wrote:

Though not strong, Carrol will help wrestle things into the wagon and chat them up briefly.

"Glad we could me of service. We'll take right good care of ya'll"

Arek takes a look at Carrol, and reaches over to help them lift some water barrels into the passenger wagon. "Thank you for joining us and helping get these supplies in so we can hit the road. The sooner we do, the safer that we will be."

Ansira Ashworthy wrote:

As Ansira comes over to offer help, Andri asks her if she could go and help the two gentlemen load their bags into the passenger wagon, and make sure they are settled in a way that there will be space for everyone to stay comfortable.

Simon approaches the Varisian woman. "Good day. My name is Simon and I'll be guarding this caravan. The road ahead looks likely to be perilous. What prompts you to brave the journey to Caliphas in these dire times?"

The colorful Varisian looks over at Simon from the trunk she is perched upon. "Me? I am heading into the city to try and find some new materials for my shop. When you spend your days making clothing for everyone else, sometimes you just need to find somethings with new colors and sparkle so that the adornments that you create can pop! Take a look at yourself - don't you think that a tunic in a dark green could help better bring out your gorgeous eyes?"

Old Dog Ravant wrote:

I am going to take the opportunity to do some last minute shopping, and acquire a mace, and given the party makeup, a Minor Healing potion if I can find one before we leave.

Ravant is able to head back towards the town center, and a small apothecary shop there has a Minor Healing potion that you can acquire. On the way back, you are able to stop at the same iron monger, and obtain a mace from among his various wears.

I am going to give our other two adventurers through the day to be ready, and then we will start heading with this crew on the road to where they are going.

As you head across town, you pass a small ironmonger's shop which also deals in functional pottery pieces. They are more than willing to give Carrol some of the broken shards from experiments that blew up in the kiln.

Slides have been updated with the view of the stable-yard.

Once you reach the stables, you are easily able to find the Graghols loading the caravan to leave, as they are almost identical, down to the way they are dressed - save for one having their hair in high ponytail. She will come over and introduce herself, "Hi, I'm Andri. Taking account of your weapons, I am going to assume you are the help that Jakivi sent? He tends to do a fair job with those he deems worth sending our way when we've felt the need to ask for help. Arek! Get over here."

As she calls for her brother, he sets down the box he was lifting into one of the wagons. "Hi, I'm Arek - and with you lot here we must be ready to leave, good! I was getting worried we wouldn't be able to make it to our first campsite by dark. I'll get the rest of the wagons loaded. Andri, will you check the horse's harnesses? Looking to the group of you, he then asks "Will you let the others know we are ready to leave" as he gestures to a small group conversing near the edge of the stable-yard.

Looking across the yard, you see a half-orc in academic robes, a dwarf in denim overalls, and a Varisian woman in a long flowing skirt, with a pattern that seems to go on forever.

You have a few minutes while Arek and Andri prepare the caravan to go where you can talk with the others, pick up last minute supplies in town, or offer to help with loading the wagons.

Carrol, Ansira and Garrace you should determine where your glyph bonus Hero Points are going.

Walking over to the bar, Jakivi pulls another pitcher of ale and offers to refill your cups. Sitting down with you at the table, he takes a deep breath and finally continues, "The rumors are that those who are patrolling the roads are not bandits, but rather undead. Those are the remnants of my brothers in arms... Soldiers of Lastwall who found themselves on the wrong side of the battle as we retreated from the Gravelands."

He grips the coin he is holding tighter as he tells you this. " This is why I want to help Arek and Andri find capable people to escort them from here to Caliphas - people who can hold their own if the undead minions of the Tyrant find them. You lot look like you will be fine for such a straight forward task - escort them from here to there, and in exchange they will feed you 3 square meals a day, and pay you the fare wage of 4 gold each once you reach Caliphas safely. If you are willing to take it on, you will find the Graghols finishing loading their wagons with passengers and supplies outside the stables on the far end of town."

On your way across town you can make a recall knowledge check to see what you might recall about the dangers of traveling through Ustalav.

DC 15 Religion or Society:

Success
Spoiler:
Dense fog often blankets the roads in southern Ustalav, making it hard to see who else may be lurking nearby. Both skeletons and zombies are known to wander the border roads, patrolling on behalf of the Whispering Tyrant and attacking any travelers they come across.

Critical Failure

Spoiler:
The stories of undead in this area are tall tales. Such creatures never stray out of the Gravelands to the south, and travelers who stick to the road have little to fear.

Hi all! Sorry for my delays, it's been a long week. That being said, I am planning to post to keep us moving later tonight, and then should be able to keep us moving forward. Thank you for putting up with my hiccups (doesn't help this that learning this PBP gm thing is new too...).

Hi! I just wanted to follow up on this order, since it hasn't shipped yet, but orders placed afterwards had. :-/

Looking at the board, among the older postings for farm hands and livestock sales, there is a new piece of parchment. Glancing over its words, they read:

Travelers heading to Caliphas seek a group of adventurers of able body and steadfast mind to accompany them onward from Grayce. See the innkeeper, Jakivi Rindix, for more details .

The innkeeper watches as you read over it, then calls over - "Interested? Seems to me that it shouldn't be too much trouble for those of your ilk," he states, gesturing at emblems on Garrace's armor. "They're just looking for some capable help on the roads, after the recent attacks on travelers heading between here and the city."

Carrol, Kaden, Ansira, Rvant, and Garrace:

As he is talking, you notice that Jakivi is fiddling with a worn coin in his right hand, pushing into it hard enough that his knuckles have turned white. Embossed upon it is the same symbol that adorns Garrace's armor - the holy symbol of Iomedae.

Simon:

You are slightly distracted by the cheap price of the chickens that are for sale.

So excited to start brainstorming for this year!!

Yes to glyph Hero Points, or any other ones that you have. I gave each of you one on the slides, and if you could add how many glyphs you have in the other notes section, that would be awesome for figuring out how many each person should have.

On your way from here to there, you have found yourself in the weary little town of Gracey. Nestled against the Gravelands along the southern border of Ustalav, it is a quiet place, though it seems a lot of people passing through. Among those other passersby, you have run into some fellow adventurers, who have joined you for lunch inside the Ash Inn. As you enjoy your food, you take time to tell stories of your past, and introduce your selves to each other better.

As you are making your introductions, the inn keeper brings you your lunches (a wonderful lamb stew) and the heads to pin a notice onto the board by the door.

Do I have a gift cert to give away?: 1d20 ⇒ 7

Sadly, no.

Also, put the first entry up into the gameplay thread so we can start character intros.

Your GM thanks you for your patience. <3
