Background:
Mira Kaavek was born on the outskirts of the small village of Illmarsh. An insular community in the county of Versex in southern Ustalav, Illmarsh is nestled within the marshy western reaches of the Forest of Veils. The locals call this swampy rot Soddentimbers, and where the waterlogged trees intrude on the village’s decomposing wooden frames, one can see why. Primal molds sprout among the sagging porches and thickly curtained windows. An abandoned boardwalk lined by half-sunken fishing boats crumbles along the foam-blasted waterfront. The daughter of a Kellid fisherman and a Varisian entertainer, Mira's childhood years were spent wading through the swamp, catching worms for her father to use as bait, or crouching under a blanket, watching her mother fiddle for tips. One year, when Mira was just ten years old, a big storm swept through southern Ustalav. As great tidal waves ripped through the swamp, and rain battered the mouldering thatched roof, felt an outlandish calling to leave the shelter of her family home. She ran out of the doorway and lept into the raging waters that filled the street. She quickly became lost in the chaos of the storm, eventually finding shelter deep within the untamed wilderness of the Forest of Veils. As the rain continued to lash her sodden form, she found a great white tree, its ancient roots twisted around a ring of rune-carved stone. As she investigated, the tree's bark fell away, revealing a tunnel leading deep underground. Mira followed the tunnel, past alien symbols, and carvings of strange beasts, into the azure glow of a musky subterranean temple. Traumatised, Mira took shelter in the temple, throwing herself on the mercy of its strange denizens. Her time underground taught her many things, but eventually she had learned all that she could from the cultists there and emerged back into the world above seeking new knowledge.
Appearance and Personality:
A descendant of Varisian settlers through her mothers line, Mira Kaavek wears the intricate symbols of her culture in elaborate tattoos that cover her body. Dark hair falls thick over her gaunt face in matted curls. Her large, seaweed green eyes are set deep in their sockets and ringed with powdered charcoal. The dark shape of a crescent moon stands out against her olive skin in the centre of her forehead, it has always been there. Her mother called it a “birth tattoo”, she calls it the mark of her one true master. Mira wears a flowing outfit made up primarily of dusky colors taking inspiration from the swampy forest she was raised in. It consists of a pair of knee-high boots, a thick woollen skirt, and a long-sleeve blouse. A well-worn hooded cloak hangs over her shoulders, tattered and mud-stained. Her accessories include an elaborate scarf and a wooden holy symbol she wears clipped into her hair above the matching mark on her forehead. She also wears an impossible number of wooden and bone rings and bracelets, pendants and pins, decorated with more symbols of her heritage or else darker, more serpentine imagery.
