****Recruitment closed. I would like to have 1 more PC, so please PM me with any final ideas.

I appreciate the update - see you around the boards!

Last call for builds - this will be officially closed end of day on June 16th.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier - I'm glad you went ahead with the build. I think this is super interesting take on an orean monk. It will take me another day to process the build and the background so we can polish it together, but initial thoughts are it is looking great!

To everyone who has posted an idea: I'd like to have a followup and a rough draft of a character by Saturday or Sunday. (it doesn't have to be perfect, but I need to know you've got time to dedicate to the campaign)

Looking good! I will give a deeper analysis later today (busy weekend).

***
Any other takers? I won't keep this recruitment open for terribly long, so please submit your ideas now if you'd like to be considered.

A new Quiet Elder recently grew with Hearth -- your master would have sensed this change coming beforehand, and sent you south to the capital city. You ran into some trouble along the way (it could have been Moon, Dreams, or a number of other things) but eventually you found your way to the city. You've only been here about a week, and you are still getting acclimated.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Unchained monk is fine. I'll have answers/ideas to the other stuff later today.

Suli have not been seen since the fall of Sky. They have been gone so long their historical accuracy is sometimes debated (like dragons)

Divine with a little healing could be good, but you have flexibility. Between the paladin;s lay on hands, his squire's lay on hands, and the waterdancer's kinetic healing, there's a decent amount of secondary healing, so you could feel free to focus on other aspects.

Sylph sounds good - let me know your thoughts on class!

Sounds cool! I'd put in a preference toward Hunter (Druid has a lot of moving parts for my taste, as a DM), but not a deal breaker either way. Let me know your thoughts on monk - the monastery you pick would have an effect on the sort of monk you might play.

our current plot is:

--PCs are mid-level adventurers that have escaped the city of Light, which was recently overrun by the god of chaos and trickery, Moon.

--They have fled to the capital city of Hearth, the base of ifrit power. The god Volcano is most strongly worshipped here, which makes is a bastion of priestly power.

--The PCs are investigating some curious circumstances around the refugees from Light, and the temple of Volcano with the city; it seems something shady is going on, but none of the refugees or the priests are willing to talk about it.

Post when you have an idea, and we can start collaborating on character ideas and backstories that will help you fit the campaign.

****

Hi All,

I am re-opening this recruitment thread! I'm looking for 1-2 new players to fit in with the current party.

ORIGINAL GUIDELINES AND INFO IN FIRST POST

***

Our current party is:

--Undine Waterdancer

--Ifrit Paladin/Swashbuckler

You have some services of a Sylph Aerokineticist, but he is unreliable at times.

got it. Please start posting in the other campaign -- I'm closing this one down.

Hi all!

This combat is going to join us with "Beyond the City of Light", so please join me

LINK HERE!

I'll have a few introductions/etc in Discussion. I'll also post a recap of the combat thus far in Gameplay.

This Campaign will be closed in a few days (since we are all porting over to Beyond Light)

River init: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

Leo init: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

We have a map! Make sure you are approximately in the right spot (River is far away to the NW, with the rest of you following. Pick a new COLOR if you wish.

ROLL INIT and declare actions if you have not done so!

MAP LINK

River, give me a fort save as one of the other beasts (still adjacent) is heating your internal body temp to an uncomfortable degree)

Everyone: take another round of actions, and tell me HOW FAR from the starting point you have traveled total. I will make a map tomorrow (Tuesday)

The beast starts in surprise at River's sudden appearance --

but flashes another hundred feet further away.
no attack of opp for this

more of an update on Monday.

It is fourteenth candle.

Later in the afternoon, tired from marching through snow, you reach the top of a hill. Below, you see five hulking figures with patchy red and black skin running across the flat areas beyond the hills.

about 250 feet away, half of it is downhill

One of the brutish beings is holding someone--a young elen, perhaps a boy--in its claws.

percep leo: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (17) + 16 = 33

Leonardo is in peak physical condition, which includes excellent eyesight. He steers you away from a weak spot in the snow pack once or twice, while Benedetto charts the long paths.

all: each of you please give me 1 skill roll for the road (like survival, perception, etc, whatever you choose).

"She doesn't remember if it's happened before. She doesn't remember anything." Gull speaks Common now, and he seems...disappointed. The sullen tone makes him sound even younger than his years.

he isn't responding to questions right now about what just happened. I'll move the scene forward in a bit.

"Rwy'n meddwl y gallech o leiaf ei ddeall o'r blaen. A gallwn i ddeall chi." Gull seems frustrated by his inability to speak Common, but stays mostly calm in River's presence.

I don't want to interrupt the flow of the current scene, but I would absoltuely love to hear on this page:

---->What does your character's morning routine look like? How do you prepare for the day? Which gods, if any, do you pray to?

The boy Gull replies, "Nid wyf yn cofio gwneud hynny." The boy's bland face reveals nothing of why he is suddenly speaking in such a manner.

none of you speak Maker Script, although I think River would at least recognize it being spoken, since she knows Sylph. It's just as strange-sounding as it looks.

I'm not a fan of the -5 F and 15 mph winds , but I'll take what I can get :)

Never lost power, yay!

I'd like to join together this group with my other table (Beyond the City of Light) this week -- we actually only have 1 memeber remaining from that group (1 left suddenly, 1 dropped PbP games in general, and 1 just had a baby).

I'll let you know when we'll migrate over to the other thread :)

River, you can also join this "morning" conversation. Anyone have any preparations to make before heading out into a cold snowy day?

****

It is Dimday, Snowrites the 28th.
It is seventh candle.

Gull awakens and sleepily pads toward Leonardo and Benedetto. Without so much as a good morning, he says, "Where are we going?"

He stares at you a moment, then laughs. "Perhaps a bite of ashbread and a bit more sleep is what I need, eh? I'll check on "Gull" and make sure he's alright before I do so, if you are staying out here. Be safe, yes?"

end scene, and we'll all join up in the "morning" conversation now

Big snow storm coming my way - if I'm not posting for a few days, it's because we lost power.

Rίver wrote:
"I don't know." River says simply. "Who or what are you?" The question doesn't seem flippant but it's delivered in a slightly distracted tone as though she doesn't care much about the answer. "Is Gull awake yet?"

"Not yet, girlie. He's fine." His tone is less friendly now. "Why do you call yourself River? Do you know more than you are saying?"

**

Leo and Benedetto, you happen to be the first awake in the morning (for narrative convenience, that way you two can have a conversation while Zurlo and River are having a separate one). It's clear now that Benedetto has a military background, but has Leonardo shared any of his past experiences yet? I imagine that could be where the conversation drifts (military experience being a shared topic for the two of you)

**

later that night

Zurlo wakes up Leonardo for his watch. Before going to sleep, he takes a quick cigarette outside. He finds River there. With no preamble, he says, "I don't know how to phrase this politely...but who, or what, are you?" He watches the undine...not with distrust precisely, just caution.

Leonardo V'adril wrote:

Leo keeps himself warm, despite his lack of heavy clothing. one of the boons of his flames. He easily starts a fire even with the iced over wood.

Well.. does anyone happen to have a spare blanket? I and keep warm all well and good while I'm awake, but.. well. When I'm asleep not so much you know.

He smiles at the others.

That said, Long as whoever is on watch keeps the fire going, I suppose it should be alright. Anyway, we all doing well?

Zurlo smiles in a grandfatherly way, and hands you one of his own blankets. "My pleasure to help, chap. And thank you for the handy work with the fire. Benedetto and I will tend to it on our watch, and I'll wake you up for yours." He goes outside the cabin for a cigarette.

Benedetto Laguardia wrote:

end scene:

"Well, what you're doing may become more important soon, eh?" With that cryptic remark, he goes to find Leonardo, the ifrit who made the handy fire in the first place. It's his turn for a watch.

Zurlo and Benedetto take second watch for the evening, and that's the conversation we're having in spoilers. I sometimes do multiple scenes that way.

Everyone, narrate yourself to food and warmth and sleep. Let me know what watch (if any) you are keeping.

It is eighteenth candle. (evening)

Even with Benedetto knowing the area fairly well, trudging through the snow takes time and effort. There is no substitute for placing one foot in front of another to make distance. The air carries a wet chill to it that leaches away your body heat.

River carries Gull; he is in no condition to walk on his own. Captain Zurlo offers the undine his arm in a polite way to help keep her upright, as its clear she won't part with Gull.

More time passes. Trudging. Any exposed skin -- cheeks, lips, hands -- becomes cold and dry. Finally, Benedetto points to a darker shape on a slope - the old cottage he mentioned.

up to Benedetto how much he shares of his life on the road before this

Captain Zurlo congratulates him on a job well done, and immediately sets to bringing in firewood from the stack. He asks Leonardo for help in getting a warming fire going inside. Though his tone is polite, it's also clear Zurlo is used to being obeyed.

benedetto discussion:

The gleam of the firelight seems to catch in Zurlo's eyes as he regard you. "You know your history? How some of the saints and knights and ladies got their powers?" He punctuates his questions by jabbing his cigarette into the air.

"Take Sire TreeBurn, savior of the black north - he chopped off his own hand rather than be corrupted by anything." He lets the statement stand in the chill air.

no worries, appreciate the update

Leo, from your aerial view, it is simple to keep an eye on the flat, snow-topped surroundings. You see no movement - whatever animals or people survived these glacial waves and snowcrashes have all gone into hiding. Your companions' footfalls are loud in the quiet, their boots crunching fresh snow.

You see some worrying tracks of a larger beast, but they veer off in a different direction as you make your way closer to the road, and possibly the cottage Benedetto told you about.

benedetto, conversation:

I think we can do this scene while we are waiting for Leonardo to respond, etc. With your survival, we'll find a good place for a campfire, so I know this scene will take place 'soon'.

Zurlo deliberately sits down at the same watch as you during the night, around the campfire that drives away the cold and the dark. He offers you a cigarette.

"Fate is funny, eh? I don't know what to do with you. You're too valuable to discard, but not a tool to be trusted. Hmm." You don't remember the Captain being quite this cold before, but you assume he's still quite angry about your desertion.

"Tell me - if you were commanding officer, in this same desperate sort of situation, what would you do with a...specimen such as yourself?" He smooths down his ash-grey mustache, then looks over to see gauge your reply.

You determine you are 4, maybe 5 days travel away from Hearth. You have a decent idea about where to find the nearest road, and eventually you might be able to find an old cottage you remember lying low in during your weary travels, long ago. (which would make a good shelter at the end of this day of traveling)

in response to River's query,

benedetto, roll a survival check to orient yourself, find a good path, eventually a better place to rest, etc

leonardo, roll a perception check to keep a general eye out

river, you are preoccupied with caring for gull. you can take 10 on a healing check just to pass the Easy task of keeping him comfortable, which is all he needs right now.

Benedetto Laguardia wrote:

He can't help but stare at the older ifrit. Captain Zurlo? Here? Not immediately trying to arrest him for desertion? As if things hadn't been mad enough already.

"Benedetto Laguardia," he says after an awkwardly long pause. "I was helping defend some of the survivors fleeing Light, and then... I was buried in the snow here..."

Benedetto,

Captain Zurlo takes a moment while the undine (she absently named herself River? odd.) and the boy are otherwise occupied. "Fancy meeting you here, eh?"" His cigarette-stained teeth are just as ugly as you remember. "I'm more concerned with survival at the present, but you and I shall have words at a campfire sometime soon, what?"

The boy, who River somehow knows is named Gull, stirs at the heat. His pale sylph skin takes a slight hint of color. He opens his eyes just a crack. "You're alive again. Good." He smiles and falls asleep, too exhausted for further emotions.

But very much alive.

leonardo nods, seeing the need for his heat. With a gesture, he blasts away the snow covering the boy, and then turns his flames slightly away for a more gradual warming effect.

prefer to have Leo answer this directly, but I will give a brief bot tomorrow if necessary (I would assume he would say yes to saving a child's life)

You uncover a boy, a pale sylph with hair shorn nearly to the scalp. An orphan boy, a thin boy, rags and ragged coat, boots too large and full of holes. Your heart reaches out to him, and you see...

Yourself. A doll, a perfect little image of you, done in a simple style. The boy is hardly conscious, but he holds onto the doll fiercely.

Another newcomer, an older ifrit, comes to Leonardo's aid as well. With a warrior's grip, he helps pulls Leo out of the snow.

Benedetto would recognize this older ifrit as Benedetto Zurlo, known as Captain Zurlo. Benedetto's former commanding officer.

The warrior holds himself with stiff pride, clearly pleased to have helped a younger el out of the snow. He brushes you off vigorously. "What's your name, lad?" His tone speaks of a formal city education.

His gaze sweeps to all of you. He nods in recognition to Benedetto. "Let's all introduce ourselves, there's a good lot." Clad in a sensible breastplate, ruby longsword, and good soldier's kit, the spry old man simply says, "I am Captain Zurlo. I was leading a contingent of soldiers back from the Front to help out the cities. Damned Moon and all this nonsense-" He stops himself here. "Well, now my soldiers are gone, and I am here." He looks to the rest of you.

introduce yourselves, and give a description of yourself as well please

River:
Your mind usually drifts toward other people, or on your dance, or music in general...so it is rare for you to pay excessive attention to your surroundings (save for their fleeting beauties). Today, however, your attention is drawn strongly to a pale hand among pale snow. A child's hand.
