Typewryter, I am in exactly the same position and I'm glad I found this post. The advice also looks excellent! I had found the OGL section 15 info but wasn't sure that was the right way to go. Thanks for asking and answering this question.

89. The Keeper of Tapestries: Someone has to repair all the inevitable damage and dust, and make sure the many tapestries are catalogued and taken care of; just imagine all the secret messages that might be sewn into the tapestries by all those otherwise unassuming seamstresses...

90. The Keeper of Antiquities: Same story, for all those captured artworks or royal gifts that come in.

91. Minister of Protocol: Who sits next to whom at the state dinners, who decides what ritual greetings are used and how the foreign heads of state are addressed.

92. Master of Heraldry: (sorry if I missed it up above, didn't see it) Who decides the artwork on new heraldric devices, who knows all the secret lore of what those symbols mean...

I love the concept of the Loremaster prestige class but the "secrets" leave me cold. I enjoy tinkering with some of the prestige classes including adding more levels (blurring the lines between class and prestige class, another discussion worth having).

Would welcome any feedback on these alternative Loremaster secrets, many of which are from the Lore mystery oracle. (note: anticipates most characters would take 1st Loremaster level at around character level 8 so would get "ultimate lore" at around character level 20)

Level
+ Int
Modifier Secret: Effect
1 Instant Mastery: gain 4 ranks in a skill in which the character has no ranks
2 Automatic Writing: meditate once per day and cast Augury spell
3 Think On It: once per day, reroll any failed Knowledge check, with bonus
4 Focused Trance: meditate then make single Intelligence-based check with +15
5 Whirlwind Lesson: gain benefits of tome after only 8 hours reading
6 Sidestep Secret: add Intelligence not Dexterity modifier to AC and Reflex saves
7 Mental Acuity: gain +1 Intelligence
8 Craft Mastery: gain any Item Creation feat not already gained
9 Spontaneous Symbology: cast any Symbol spell once per day as a spell-like ability
10 Lore Mastery: take 20 on all Knowledge skill checks
11 Mental Acuity: gain +1 Intelligence
12 Divine Lore: case Commune once per tenday
13 Ultimate Lore: cast Wish once per tenday

I think these are great--I also think a lot of the prestige classes need to be upgraded or modified to have truly unique and interesting, but not overpowering, abilities that one can't get from the class alone.

Forgive the "newbie" post. Where is the best place to discuss prestige classes here? I have developed or modified a number of them, hard to playtest them all, would be great to have feedback or discussion.
