Background:

Maudril was brought up in a poor religious family. While he never truly spent a night hungry, he was always hungry for answers to questions. He loved questions after all and it was this love of knowledge and seeking answers that got him into most of his trouble. Where he lived, worship of the local deity was expected and for a time this was fine with him. That is, until he began to apply his questioning logic to it. There was always someone stronger, faster, or smarter, or in the case of the ‘gods’, more divine. But as Maudril studied the various deity’s, he became troubled with the fact that at least 4 different gods were all at one time men. Of all of these stories, Cayden Cailean’s troubled him the most. It didn’t seem possible but here it was in text for all to read; A man, a drunk of man no less, became a god.
It was here that Maudrils quest for knowledge began. No matter the cost he wanted to know how it happened. How this man, as well as others, achieved godhood. Sure there was the story of completing some ‘Test of the Starstone’ but this seemed much more logical to be ‘proving ground’ to see if one is worthy of being ‘divine.’ From these thoughts sprouted questions that needed to be answered: ‘If a man can become a god, does that mean that gods are simple a more advanced form of life and that they are merely sharing their knowledge of power and preservation?’, ‘If that is the case, is it possible for one to achieve immortality and power through study?’, ‘If these things are true, is it possible that magic is merely a manifestation of the ‘gods’ power meant to keep people ignorant of the power that could be theirs?
With these questions in mind, Maudril began spending more and more time, locked up in his room dissecting and examining anything he could get his hands on. More than one rat was unfortunate enough to be caught and dissected while still alive. How else, after all, could anyone truly understand how the body worked without seeing it work first hand? How does it react when different compounds are applied? Is there perhaps a way to keep the body young and not age? Is there a way to achieve the power of the ‘gods’ without actually having it ‘bestowed’?
As time progressed, Maudril learned that by mixing various items together he could mimic almost any ‘magic’ that the local wizard could produce. Sure he had his limits but who doesn’t. As his skill grew it became apparent to Maudril that, like city life, ‘magic’ has laws. Laws that when broken cause the magic to cease functioning; but if they are followed, even the lowliest commoner can use those ‘powers.’
Maudril’s studies have been less than popular wherever he went. For this reason, he has had to maintain a closed door policy and keep up some kind of front. And, while not opposed to death for the greater good, and what better good is there than my own, Maudril is not one to kill needlessly. Everything he does has a purpose.
