They are up there to keep the ogres on the hookback mountains away from Turtleback Ferry the closest settlement. There have been many short but bloody skirmishes between the Kreeg's clan ogres and the Black Arrows over the last couple decades, but since their first decisive defeat at the entrance to the Valley 45 years ago, the Kreegs have never built up enough bravery to mount a second attack on Fort Rannick. The danger going up the mountain is those very same ogres! The black arrows do an admirable job keeping them under control but a few manage to slip past from time to time.
