I went through and compared it to the animal companions available to the druid, and it falls short in the damage category in the higher level animals.

After playtest, our group chose to increase the base slam damage to 1d8 (inline with the MM charts on base dmg for a medium plant), and the Spines ability damge to 1d6 (even with the size increase and alacrity you still don't end up with higher damage, multiple attacks until 9th level at the earliest).

We also consisdered adding another ability that grants it DR 5/slashing for a 1 level abililty (limted DR, and lower number, no stacking).

The possibilities are very nice with this base template. Maybe add an ability for pass without trace as well.

The additional abilities over the animals gets balanced out in the HD difference vs. higher level choices. If you choose some of the 16th level alt. choices, they generally would have a much lager HD pool that a plant that got abilities instead of the extra HD alot.

Just my thoughts though. :-)
