"Always the gentleman, you are." Korghym says to Volkar, before turning to Andrezi, "And you have a fantastic beard for a human. No reason to be jealous."

"If it gets too dark, I'll carry one human if you can carry the other."

Korghym claps his hands. "Good. That's solved. Now where's this farmhouse?"

Korghym takes a look at everyone's weapons, then scratches his beard a minute. "How about this," hey says, "I will stand in front with the longhammer, to keep them off the rest of you. Kiera shoots that spell of hers, and Andrezi his crossbow. Volkar loads Kiera's crossbow, then trades with Andrezi. Then we all back up and repeat."

"Let's discuss tactics a bit before we go back out. These things only have claws and teeth, so we really should be picking them off from a distance."

We can wait, I'd rather you devote the extra energy to your wife.

"An inn in Sandpoint sounds like a great way to get some rest. The farmhouse sounds like a great way risk our necks."

Korghym looks down the trail each way, then kicks the dirt once. "Well, let's at least practice a little teamwork first. What do you say?"

"Truly. The most important part of any battle is staying alive oneself, not killing one's enemies."

Korghym nods at Volkar's words. "How confident are we that the main house will bring safety rather than more danger?"

"Ah, I see. You ran away when you learned it couldn't follow? Smart."

"Wait," Korghym interrupts Andrezi, "A barghest!?"

He leans against his longhammer, getting comfortable. "This I gotta hear."

"Sure it does. But should we be the ones stopping it? I was a caravan guard once, but now I'm just a merchant. And don't pull out your beards, but the three of you don't look like you've done much fighting either."

"Not when I could help it, but sometimes you can't. Just keep yourself and your companions safe, then worry about everything else--including killing the beasties."

"Volkar has the right of it," Korghym says, "something did this, not someone."

"I don't normally mind a few aches in the morning," Korghym says, "but I'd rather not get bitten by one of those things just to save a few copper."

The priest is awful quiet. Wonder if all these lost souls are troubling his.

Korghym walks over and slaps Andrezi on the shoulder. "Best not to think about some things. Just keep your boots marching and your hammer swinging."

Just consider yourself warned: I reserve the right to say, "I told you so" if you return immediately and it ends up being too soon :-p

Korghym waves over one of the guards, "You ready for escort duty, lad?"

Having gone through a similar situation, I would recommend waiting an extra week to resume your PbP commitments. The first objective is to avoid burnout, not to return ASAP.

Korghym follows Volkar up to the scarecrows with his longhammer, ready to backup his new companion.

What does everyone think about putting the "formal" game on hold and just doing a little role-playing? That would allow the players to keep posting while the GM deals with RL, and also let Korghym and the other PCs get to know each other better. I don't really feel like he knows your characters yet, and assume you feel the same way about him.

Korghym looks at the scarecrows, then the wizard. "Kiera?"

"These ghouls feel a lot like guards, which makes me think we should discuss a few things before searching for their master."

Real life seems to be getting the best of our GM again, so what say our characters get to know each other a little?

"My mother would say to clear an inner circle first, but my good old father would charge right in."

"It feels like we may have just scouted the perimeter. I'm expecting the farmhouse to be somewhere in the middle."

"A moment first, till the shakes pass. Those few seconds of battle can be tougher than they look."

Korghym walks up to the last scarecrow slowly, then works both feet back and forth in the dust and readies his longhammer.

Mechanically, asking Volkar to wait until my post-rage fatigue passes (4 rounds).

"Kiera. Andrezi. Is the third one a ghoul or just a scarecrow?"

Now that's more like it. Nobody's getting bitten by those rotten teeth this time.

"Keep at it! Aim for the one with the red scarf!"

Fully into his rage now, Korghym almost bends the bow in two and sends a powerful shot streaking toward the other ghoul.

Crunch:
Standard Attack (red)

Longbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 Piercing: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

"Make the ghouls come to us. They can't attack as well while running."

Korghym takes a deep breath, and the veins in his forearms suddenly pop out. He pulls back the taut bowstring and punches an arrowhead several inches deep into the green-shirted ghoul's torso.

"Guards, Fire! Starting with the injured one."

Crunch:
Free Rage (+4 Strength)
Standard Attack (green)
Move Activate guarded stance (4 rounds)

Longbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25 Piercing: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

"Let's do this right for a change." Korghym walks a few feet in front of his companions, then strings his bow and notches an arrow. "You all stand behind me and shoot or throw stuff. You'd be surprised how quickly all those nicks and scratches add up, if you keep taking them."

It's fantastic so far. First time living with a girlfriend :-)

"First things first. Let's make sure Volkar isn't one of them now." Korghym grabs a handful of the other dwarf's beard and pulls his mouth open. "Say, ahh"

Heal: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

This weekend has completely drained me--moved yesterday and transported two truckfuls of mulch today, but I will be back to normal tomorrow night.

And hopefully some of the things keeping you busy were good busy.

Welcome back :-)

That is definitely a monumental load to have to deal with! Take your time, and take care of yourself and your family.

Personally, I am completely fine putting the AP on hold if that helps you. A week or two vacation can wreak havoc on a 6 week PFS scenario, but might not even be noticeable in a 3 year AP.

Korghym moves between the ghoul and his new allies, then rolls forward on the balls of his feet, perfectly balanced. "This one is mine. Just make sure you all stay safe."

Crunch:
Move Movement
Standard Activate guarded stance (+1 dodge, 4 rounds)

AoO if needed: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 Bludgeoning/Silver: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 2) + 3 = 9

Korghym rushes forward, but seems distracted with protecting Andrezi. "Get behind me! You risk all our lives with your own!"

Crunch:
Move Movement
Free Rage (+4 Dex)
Standard Attack (red)

Longhammer: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 Bludgeoning/Silver: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 5) + 3 = 9
AoO if needed: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26 Bludgeoning/Silver: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 4) + 3 = 8
Confirmation: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26 Bludgeoning/Silver: 4d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 1, 1, 3) + 6 = 15

Korghym moves up beside Volkar, his longhammer resting lightly on the path. "What are those flasks and bottles around your waist? The last time I saw that many chemicals on a warrior, he used them to set things on fire from a safe distance."

He points at Volkar's wound from the last battle. "Might be a helpful skill to have right now, seeing as how they can't bite you from afar."

"If you're going to leave a guard behind, leave two so they can watch each others' backs. And perhaps they can construct a litter to get this lady back to town."

Ready to move on

Korgym turns to look back at Kiera, then rams the haft of his longhammer several inches into the ground to hold it in place. You better be right, it's not your life at risk here.

It takes a couple of tries, but Korghym frees the scarecrow with little difficulty and then inspects her wounds. "You've been bitten, lass. And it's infected. Best make peace with your gods, then I can offer you a quick death, before you turn into one of those that attacked your family."

Crunch:
Strength: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Strength: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17

Korghym tosses the bow back to its owner, then moves closer to the scarecrow. He pokes it with his longhammer from several feet away, and says, "Now would be a good time to explain yourself."

Heal: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 Is it alive? Does it look sick?

Korghym watches Kiera's bolts fly at the scarecrow, then turns to her and cocks his head sideways a bit, "So what's your spell saying?"

"You're the magicians, can't you do something?" No wonder they wanted my help. They need it.

Korghym points to one of the guardsmen's bows with two fingers, then slowly and stiffly curls them toward himself a single time, like a steel bar being pounded into a horseshoe. He holds out a thick fingered hand for the bow, while looking at Kiera. What did I get myself into?

Disrupt undead?

"Woah!" Korghym puts both hands on Kiera's shoulders. "Nobody told me anything about this. Dying in battle with your axe in hand is one thing. Maybe somebody should be telling me about this mysterious killing spree."

The dwarf plants his feet shoulder width, with hands on hips and a stare on his face that could stop a herd of elephants.

I will be at a convention this weekend, so please bot me if necessary.

Korghym beheads the nearest ghoul, the begins walking to the next and shouts at Andrezi, "I'd be much happier if you prayed that we don't find anymore of those ghouls."

Korghym runs up and swings a bit too soon, failing to get his full weight behind the axe head.

Crunch:
Free Rage (+4 Dex)
Move Movement
Free Draw waraxe
Free Drop longhammer
Standard Attack (red)

Waraxe: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 Slashing: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

"Andrezi, move aside! You humans don't have the stomach to get so close to something so rotten smelling."

"Give me that thing! You're all wrong. Turn your feet like this, and start exhaling right before you release the draw."

Korghym easily feathers an arrow into the target, then roughly shoves the bow back at its owner. Has anybody other than me actually fought a battle before?

Crunch:
Longbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26 Piercing: 1d8 ⇒ 5

"Your clan must have some unusual traditions. In mine, veterans show the unbearded lads how things are done. But I'd be happy to teach."

Korghym lines up the guards, then draws his longhammer. He points to the right scarecrow and then tells the guard with the green scarf, "Hit it with a single arrow. If it's just a normal scarecrow, it won't mind. But the rest of you, be ready to pepper the thing if it reacts."

Would be nice if we could get some in character confirmation that Volkar is okay. Maybe a heal check?

Korghym looks at the scratch Volkar just took. "Then there's no time to waste. We better cut off that limb before the disease spreads!"
