Thanks for sharing your character.

I thought that the backstory as a whole seemed more fitting for a barbarian than a fighter, but I think that the barbarian class is not included in the Beginners box, right? The fighter class is a solid choice for a new character and player, as it is relatively easy to handle.

Thanks!

The classes that are available in the Beginner's box are cleric, rogue, wizard, and fighter. I decided to take a fighter for specifically that reason.

The backstory is sound IMO, but he´s gotten a bit easy off the hook in the end, I´d say. There might be some penance called for before he gets off the gallows. Even a cleric of Shelyn would be hard-pressed to forgive that easy IMO.

The tournament you describe there has to be a strange affair if they let unarmed folks fight there - is that more like people getting thrown to the lions? This would probably not be something that could take place in a society with lawful and/or good alignment tendencies, more like some sort of bloodsport in an evil society. Furthermore, if there are officially allowed tournaments, he would not be guilty for murder. That part does not sound quite convincing yet. (If it were me, I´d say he killed the hafling woman outside an arena for some reason or other - perhaps a mistake, perhaps he killed her in cold blood.)

I fixed some of the details so that it would make more sense however I couldn't figure out what a Cleric of Shelyn would really want as a penance. I thought a Shelyn worshipper would try to prevent killing as much as possible but I tried to fix that part as well but it still might need some tinkering.

After he left the guild he resumed his tour of taverns and crucibles but this time he fought with greater anger and took pleasure in manhandling his opponents until one day he went too far after a bout at a local tournament. An inexperienced female halfling monk angered by the permanent maiming of her husband at the hands of the dwarf attacked him. Tokas, unfortunately, took no sympathy on her and battered her until she died in front of her children and elderly parents even though he could have ended things much sooner just to feed his addiction to violence not really thinking of the consequences of his actions. When he saw the eyes of her kids as they gazed upon their dead mother he felt instant remorse for his actions and surrendered himself to the authorities who arrested him for murder willing to waste his life in a cell or have his neck chopped off by the executioner's blade. Fate, however, smiled kindly on him and gave him a second chance when a cleric from the local Temple of Shelyn claiming to represent the family of the halfling he killed offering him forgiveness in exchange for him promising to walk on the right path and to do whatever the family and the church asked of him. Tokas reluctantly accepted the deal as half of him was more than willing to end his life for what he had done.

With that backstory, the otherwise unusual choice of religion and alignment for a dwarf become logical.

The stats are quite good, and will make for a powerful, yet not overpowered character. Note: Dwarves are Medium creatures under PF rules, despite being described as short and stocky.

Thanks! It's good to know that at least as a noob I didn't completely f!@@ up in terms of the lore.

After you finish your first, I would suggest you make a bunch more to see the effects of different classes and builds. Then look to see what games are available in recruiting section. With luck, you can find one that has an opening that you could apply to with one of the characters you already made after tweaking it a little.

That's pretty good advice.

I was wondering though if there was a way that I could present my character sheets to someone before I joined a game so that a potential mistake on my part doesn't cause any problems.

Good to hear.

I'm almost done with my first character (assuming I don't accidentally mess something up).

It's nothing special but it should be good enough for a first character.

GM_Beernorg wrote:
ack, can't rightly say what is causing that, sorry man. (if you are not ATM, try opening the sheet in Adobe Acrobat)

I just did that and it's working so far. Thanks!

GM_Beernorg wrote:
What program are you using to open the file, and it is a PDF format correct?

That would be correct.

The problem I'm having is that these sheets have slots that are filled in by self calculations that are not altering themselves correctly when I put in the numbers.

Don't worry, it looks crazy at first, but for the most part, it is pretty easy to fill in most of the numbers and stuff.

If you have any questions, you can post them here, or in the advice section of the messageboards. If you need help with the basics or getting started, there is also a section for the beginner box set that has some great info. Just ask!

I've been trying to use computer pathfinder sheets while reading the beginner box's hero handbook, but the sheets keep on screwing up on me.

What's a nub?

Just make sure to avoid any kind of political thread. Those can get nasty. It doesn't matter how strongly you feel about the subject, just don't post in them. Under any circumstances.

In other news, welcome! Please enjoy your stay.

I learned to stay away from internet political (and religious) discussions a long time ago.

One other thing to mention in regards to trying to get into a game. There might not be that much going on until after the New Year's holiday is over. The games move at a slow pace anyway, but during holiday seasons people get busy with other things and real life has a tendency to take priority for some bizarre, inexplicable reason.

That's fine with me.

I still have to figure out how Pathfinder even works so I'm not going to rush getting into things.

Sorry, that's all I've got.

I'm guessing you have a low Charisma score?

Is that how this works?

The biggest problems with play by post games are:

1) They can end up taking a very long time to do what could be done in a face to face table top setting in a matter of hours. A large combat scene could take weeks to play out in play by post format. So you have to make sure that you're going to be comfortable with the relatively slow pace.

2) At least partly related to reason 1, people will end up dropping out of games with no notice after they have been going for a while. Sometimes that even happens with the GM. While this is frustrating when it happens, you simply have to be ready to find other games to try to join, or do the work to GM one yourself.

However, if one is fortunate enough to be able to get into a good group, one can have quite a bit of fun. And it is possible to do some things in posting on the boards that can't easily be done in face to face settings such as getting into detail about what the characters is thinking or feeling. Just make sure you go along with the conventions used to differentiate what a character says from what a character thinks. For example:

As Mundarion dodged behind a pillar to take cover from the opposing archers he said, "We've got to take these guys down!". He thought to himself, "This is not going well at all"

Though different groups might have slightly use slightly different methods to sort that kind of thing out.

I figured the dropping out thing that might be a problem.

However I was wondering how you sign up for a PbP campaign? Is there a forum you have to go to or do you PM to DM or Mod?

GM_Beernorg wrote:

PbP (play by post) tend to be a good online method of play that does not require long stretches of available time, as you can post to the thread and further your characters actions, then check back in later to see what happened, and then continue from there.

You just have to be aware of how frequently the GM expects posts from each player in the thread.

Oh yeah, and welcome to the PF boards!

(Haladir is quite correct, the rules and advice boards can get, terse to say the least, troll infected at their worst)

The PbP section sounds like the perfect place to start.

Thanks.

Seriously though, welcome aboard, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, this is a very friendly and helpful community.

Thanks.

I have never played anything like Pathfinder but I've always wanted to try and figured your Online Campaigns would be the best way for me to learn (I don't have a large slot of hours in a day that I can spend on Skype or playing D&D somehwere IRL).

I figured I would just post something here since I have no idea what to do in terms of making my first post.
