Katryala moved around the water towards the fray, looking for a clear opening to unleash her last spell on Lamm without catching any of her companions in the wash of flame...
"Old man, before this night is through, I will eat your heart in the marketplace!"

Mastering her urge to charge across the room (and no doubt into the waiting maw of the crocodile) in her sudden urge to claw the skin off the old man's face, Kat took a quick breath and remembered her training. Quickly then she began to weave and whirl her fingers about in the air, calling forth the abjuration magicks that she had seemed to have such a knack for. She furtively glanced amongst the companions left by her to see which would be least likely to swing at her head for attempting to offer them the protective touch...

Here's a free Pro. Evil for either Krek or Ayedah before wading into battle, whoever wants it...

Finally he will approach Katryala, putting his hand on her shoulder "Kat, is...is this your brother? Will he be all right?"

Katryala replied slowly, "Twas him... I think... Though he is much changed. At least he seems to have stepped back from the gate of death for now though."

Gern Hammerfold wrote:
He looked down at the wizardess tending to the fallen rogue before he added "Aye, an' we need all o' us focused on the game at hand or we're gonna' die here and Lamm'll live to casue more of this"

"Fear not," she added to the dwarf. "I almost let myself away there a moment... But I am clearer now. I will be able to do what needs to be done when the time comes. What is our next course of action though?"

Confused by the bursts of activity and violence that seemed to erupt all at once - enraged at the state the object of her quest had seemed to devolve to - satisfied at her estimation that her "patient" was safely unconcious and ostensibly free from pain, Katryala drew her kukri from her robe and turned with a shout to dash up the stairs behind Gern and Alandra. Now it was time... Time to find and gut the bastard.

Katryala gives a shout and makes a break across to the bloodied thug crumpling up at the bottom of the stairs.

ah, poop

If there are no objections, he will take Katryala around the room, helping her to avoid any noisy obstacles (aiding her Stealth), looking for her brother and aiming to kill any adults or youths Alandra may have pointed out.

Katryala nodded and followed as quietly as she could manage...

Stealth=16 (12 + 2 + 2assist?), Perception=11 (6 + 5)

He thinks for a moment "Well mageling, can you not.." and he wiggles his fingers at her " ..somehow keep us in contact? Or if not at the very least could you give us a description and a name? That is all I can think of. Anyone else?"

Katryala flushed and looked away quickly. "Yes... It was my brother, Einsamm. He was taken by Gaedren's hired men some years ago." (Sense Motive DC: 11)

She turned to Katryala. "Did you want to tag along behind me then? An extra pair of hands could be useful if any of them need clouting about the head to keep them in line." she said, humor in her voice but sympathy in her eyes.

"Thank you, I like that idea greatly. But I am new to these sorts of matters and not as accustomed to knowing the precautions and strategies we will need to take. I'll abide by whatever consensus can be found on how to proceed..."

"So, what I propose is a two pronged attack; fist stealth and sneakiness, then might and mayhem. Alandra, it is, yes? " He address the young Shoanti "You say you were once a little 'Wolf' yourself? Now, please correct me if I am wrong, but are not 'Wolves pups' controlled directly by 'Overseers'? What would happen if we were to first take Them out? Might doing so, combined with promises of freedom from the 'Wolf's' vile clutches not likely convince many of the little 'Pups' to desert that stinking ship? I propose you and Gillian, perhaps accompanied by myself, make that our prime target, to eliminate the Overseers and free the children from their control, perhaps even turning some of them to our side! A proper rebellion! Neh? And Then, mighty Krek, you and the rest of our more brawny types would be free to rain carnage down upon 'the Wolfs' remaining allies. How does that sound as the beginnings of a proper plan to you all?"
Alandra wrote:

"I hear what you're sayin', and for some it might work. But some others, I don't know. I mean, some of them kids do what they do 'cause they like it. Better might be to kill the the big ones then scare the little ones, like we're gonna kill them too, but not. I don't wanna kill no little kids neither, but some them're bad. They won't wanna be on our side. Other than that, your plan sounds good."

Katryala began to lead the group in the direction indicated, but even now she was greatly impressed at the foresight and consideration of her companions - where she had been ready to rush off blindly and angrily into the hornets' nest without a second thought.

"Now that we are discussing it though, it is a worrisome thing, and I feel I should ask... There is still a goodly chance that some of our number may yet be able to find those dear to us amongst these 'pups'... Or at least I still dare to hope so. If so, how should we best try to tell the others so no harm comes to them? Or even best get their attention so they don't misguidedly try to harm us? If we aren't sure to coordinate and communicate once we are there, it could turn out to be all for naught."

Katryala gave a wry little smile as she watched the others come out of the townhouse and assemble one by one in the street. "Perhaps I can begin to fulfill our host's premonitions by trying to steer our own gathering avalanche a little." She fumbled in the pocket of her robes and pulled out a tattered paper, which held a crude sketch that mapped an overview of the city's various districts. The back of the paper read "Theumanexus' Academy Orientation Guide".

"I am a relative newcomer to this City," she said, consulting the overworn map. "But if I am not mistaken, the West Pier she spoke of should be... this way."

"We have all waited some time I think. But we know now where to go. I think we should not wait a minute longer..."

Katryala stepped forward slowly, pointing to a card. "This. This one is right."

#2 for me please.

(Difficulty controlling her breath... Excitement? Fear? Years of searching finally coming to a close? Deep breath...)

"You... you have my assistance - in any way that will help take this bastard down to his knees."

Katryala could barely conceal her excitement as she hustled through the streets of Korvosa that eve. First, a solid link to Gaedren had finally come. And now at last the interminable day had ended and she was out in the streets – away from the slowly suffocating strictures of the Academy.

Approaching the address she had been given though, Katryala heard a number of different voices drifting out and moved forward the rest of the way cautiously. She peered through the door to see an assortment of other individuals, some brandishing cards that looked as though they had been taken from the same deck. (Of course it seemed so obvious now in retrospect that there should be others here with the same goal. How many souls had Gaedren brought grief to in his long years? She felt vaguely foolish at not having thought of this possibility before.) Taking a deep breath, she tried to slip quietly through the door into the room. Looking small and frail in her blue student’s robes, she just seemed out of place in this rabble, and her attempt to seem nonchalant in the act just made her feel more ill at ease.

“It seems we all share a common thread,” she said nervously, showing the card she had herself received – the Grand Inquisitor. “If I may ask, how long have you all been awaiting our absent hostess?”

Ready, cap'n!

Spoiler:

Ok. I updated with the +2s then. I slid the extra skill point from Sense Motive to Knowl History.

Also, I figure I should have some default memorizations. So unless otherwise specified, I should be trying to starting each day with

Cantrips

  • Detect Magic
  • Light
  • Read Magic

1st Level

  • Mage Armor
  • Burning Hands

And the Specialist Bonus of Element Resistance will be for Fire unless otherwise changed.

It all depends on how badly you want to graduate. ;) I mean, nothing is impossible, and she might sneak away from campus (as i think students have occasionally been known to do), get caught, get into trouble, promise better behavior, be requested for aid by the city guard, have the teachers all up in arms about it, ...

There are always options. But we need to come up with something. Having her in a less prestige-heavy school would help. Maybe she even "writes home" about her life in the Academae, when really she only ever saw it on the breaching festival.

Finally, regarding scrolls: I am a bit torn, but in the interest of fairness, i would ask you buy scrolls normally from starting gold (which probably equals out to "no scrolls" :(

NP, on the scrolls. I kinda figured it would end up being out of price range anyway.

We will go with one of the other institutions then. They will have laxer rules anyway, and I doubt she will have too many qualms about cutting class. An extra source of conflict never hurts for story that way. (Or maybe I just watched too much Harry Potter this weekend.)

I checked the lost sibling trait, and it does actually say it makes those two skills class skills only, instead of the +2 bonus like the other traits. If you want me to use the +2 instead, would you say the +2 only applies if she has a rank in the skill? Otherwise I might move the point over to another Knowledge.

Beyond that, I'm going to post the following updates, and if they all look kosher, will flip up the "Ready" flag.

Thanks

If spoiler tags were generally read, they could be done away with entirely. I am therefore making my first official ruling for this game: You read only spoiler tags directly addressed to you, or tags for which you qualify. This just saves lots of time compared to private messages, which this board does not support anyway.

I honestly wasn’t sure what was supposed to be OGC or spoilered when I wrote everything up, so I just spoilered it all to be safe. That all works for me though.

And for the record, I too love the party so far, especially fact that three clerics can come to the table each with such varied things to contribute. Good stuff.

Is there a central resource to get a rundown of languages in Golarion?

For the background, you definitely have a point. I have wanted to play a novice character for some time, bright but naïve and experiencing everything – the world, the big city, adventuring, etc – for the first time. The Academae was a nice McGuffin to give her a reason to get there. But it does run the risk of being like those high school dramas on tv my mother always used to complain about, how everyone just hangs out all day and no one ever actually went to a class. I wasn’t sure how much liberty I was taking too, by throwing in the “scholarship” bit. But it seemed necessary, since suddenly I had to think of how a poor country girl gets into the big city and pays for a prestigious education.

One possibility is that maybe she is affiliated with one of the other colleges mentioned instead of the Academae. That seemed a bigger liberty to take when writing the backstory, but maybe if some smaller institutions feel like they are competing w/ a big dog, so to speak, they would be a lot more liberal with who they take and restrictions on their comings and goings once they are there. This may also suit better since, from the little info given, the Academae seems to have a big focus on summoning? Not that I have anything against summoning… I just didn’t want to make a big deal about it. Or maybe she is under the personal tutelage of a private magus in the City who seems like a benefactor but may or may not have his own nefarious designs? Or maybe the whole student angle is whack and she is just coming to the city for revenge and to get her mother to stop looking at her like that? In any case, I’ll roll with whatever you think seems easiest to work with.

I was figuring Sense Motive as a class skill due to the background trait choice. I believe it was that and Gather Info, which I also wanted to take advantage of, but just don’t have enough points to go around for that yet. That being said, I was doing it all from memory when I typed it up, so I’m not 100% sure the #s are right. But I figured +1 rank +2 Wis +3 Class Skill.

I am still trying to digest the new arcane bonding rules a little, so I didn’t put anything down for that. But I am 90% sure at this point that I will being going with a familiar – probably a toad, to help offset her low CON (at least at 1st level). I am just really trying to think up a cool name and/or story for it as well. (And trying to resist the urge to just refer to him as “Mr. Toad”, or something similarly stupid, the whole time.)

I have not had a chance to do equipment yet. Honestly the extra martial proficiency has thrown me off my game some, and I am trying to digest it to see if it is something I want to capitalize on. I had thought about maybe having her take her father’s old beat-up kukri with her with she left home, but am still not sure how much I like that notion. She may be more useful to the group in the long-run in ranged combat, really, and that was my thinking when I picked PBS as feat. But then I feel like I am wasting the bonus martial prof., as I would prefer xbow to bow. Do you have any ideas for what niche would best work with the party at large? (Maybe I should take a halberd and work towards whirlwind attack, heh.)

I am led to understand there is no xp penalty for Magic item creation anymore. Would you object to her having made a couple of 1st level scrolls already, if I subtract the cost of making them out of starting equip? (I am not even sure that is a practical idea just yet, and will have to check the numbers, really. It’s an idea I had this morning…)

Good catch on the “Einsamm”. I wrote a lame fantasy-esque short story back in college where the main character’s name was Einsamm for that exact reason. I had Katrina stuck in my head as a starting point for this character’s name, and it all kind of tied in neatly to make a reference back to it for myself, especially given the nature of her backstory...
