![]() Sobbing and wails was the chorus that awaited the end of their battle, and it was rare indeed when the swan song of bloodshed didn't involve such tragic melodies. The sights that accompanied the pained echoes were quite fitting; uninjured men and women helping those who were not so lucky. Decimated store fronts, their lumber here and there, with its offspring of splinters strewn around them. The blackened stones of homes that had known the bite of fire, and the still rising trails of smoke that scarred the slowly darkening sky. It was all too familiar to Karl, his long strides slowed not because of what he was experiencing but because of the blows that he had taken, but they would heal, he was glad his itch was gone too. A surprise to the hardened man though was the glimmer of hope and gratitude that shined in the eyes and echoed in the words of these people. He was not used to such things, and often he'd look back awkwardly, before nodding to those these men and women. Karl had fought for his own reasons and survival as he usually did, and he wasn't used to his selfishness being complimented It isn't like they have to know, and besides a good bounty hunter and sellsword needs some renown Finally they came upon the sheriff, a person that Karl knew would probably be responsible for a score of jobs in the future...if he played his cards right. He had hoped that his fighting would do the job for him, but his poor showing against that last mutt had crushed that hope, still his willingness to stand against a raid should amount to something with the man...a raid that seemed all too convenient to be random, and he did not know much of goblins but what he heard from Darnak pretty much assured him that they were not known for their cleverness. Once Baldek is done talking to the Sheriff. "The attack seemed too perfect; to happen on a day where you all would be busy...or are goblins attacks of this scale common in this area?" If you want to join them, I'd be happy to help you...or maybe your a talker? You like being alive, yes? even though you're chained like a dog...your friends killed a bunch of dogs today, and seeing how now your in the position of one, but far less useful..." You won't know a battle is over till you see dark feathers Karl walked through the ruins of their battle, making his way to the nobleman they had saved. The words of the fellow were expected, and while some may turn down his gratitude and choose a more altruistic path, Karl would be no different from the carrion birds that descended around them; he would find some benefit from the bloodshed, like he always did. ![]() Battles were unpredictable as a storm ridden sea; you had no idea whether you would dock safely on the shores of victory or sink down to the depths of defeat. All he needed to do was focus on their enemy find their weaknesses and obliterate them, with luck they'd come out of this alive including his reckless client, which he didn't want to look at now for fear of allowing his professionalism turn into raw emotion...Have enough of those bottled up. The goblin in front of him looked eager enough. Something that was easily exploited. A quick scan of his opponents habits revealed even more; favored footing, unconscious and unnecessary movements, just the right mixture for the plan he needed to execute. ![]() Hey DocEvil, I really hate to be a bother but is it okay if after the fight, I make a change to Karl's starting feat and Favored Class Bonus? The problem with the Bounty Hunter Slayer archetype is that it eats up three of the early Slayer Talents, which would really hamper the build I am going for, one way to remedy this is to take the human slayer favored class bonus, but I thought that I could not choose it cause I needed the HP and didn't think I could squeeze in the Toughness feat along with my other feats...turns out after looking at my feat build again that I could. Once more sorry for being a bother. ![]()

![]() The metallic scent of blood and choking smoke hung in the air. Broken and torn bodies littered the streets of a town that had been concerned with nothing but celebration and the noise of battles fought unseen rang and echoed from all directions instead of the laughter of children and the joyful singing that had once dominated the atmosphere. Yes their small battle may have been ended, but it seemed that violence still refused to unclench it's fist from around the once peaceful town. Which made Karl wonder just how much blood will seep through the closed hand before the people who are unused to carnage could once more breath the sweet and comforting air of peace...instead of the iron and burning stench that will likely invade their noses even long after their streets have been cleansed of it's battle scars. To him though? This wasn't foreign, if anything it brought memories of long dead battlefields and riots. Their victory was more or less crushing, with their wounded being tended to at these very moments. It is usually after such encounters that the bounty hunter scouted about to learn of what they were up against, but he wasn't alone and leaving a companion to care for another with no one to stand guard wasn't the smartest decision one could make, so there he stood as Ahdak did his best to reverse what damage was done to their friend who had enough guts to actually charge in without any armor...Come to think of it the other dwarf isn't wearing any armor as well He would have continued on this line of thought if Alesta hadn't taken him by surprise when she came to care to his small wound. Unexpected but... He raised an eyebrow as he looked in her direction "Appreciated" He said in his usual tone as he continued to look out for any possible ambushes their little "friends" may deiced to launch. ![]() This Karl supposed was his own folly for underestimating these goblins. Yes they were barely coordinated, easily distracted and uselessly reckless, but in the chaos of battle even a farmer who never held a sword before this day could kill a master swordsman. It seemed to Karl though that the goblin's actions were not completely random. That he went after him specifically and the bounty hunter could see only one reason for that Defending your songstress, that's sweet that is Sarvo gave the goblin a small, insidious smile, that he hoped at some primal level would let it know what he planned to do. One of things Karl found to be useful in battle was denying your opponent their desire. It would infuriate them, make them desperate, and most important of all make them careless. Their goblin friend wanted to play the chivalrous knight, so Karl would gladly play the villain in his story and like any good villain he'd make sure their hero here would fail completely at what he set out to do. In a single wave of motion that belied his size, Karl made his way towards the warchanter. As he stood before he took mere moments to study her tendencies in battle. He knew these goblins preferred dodging over making their armor work for them...if they had any armor that was worth mentioning. With his short study of his opponent complete, Karl raised his axe upward and brought it down on the goblin leader, then raised it once more and did the same. Karl quickly went about studying the goblin's habits in battle; it was hard to gauge anything with goblins but he could still see which foot it favored, a certain habit in its guard...if it could be called that and a chance of an opening that he could exploit. The manner of Sarvo's attack appeared instinctual; there was no hesitation as he stepped into the goblin's guard and delivered a swift kick to its head. This cheap shot was followed almost immediately with a handle bash from the battlaxe and the successive attacks ended with a brutal slash that went from left to right with power of the tall man's waist and both arms behind it. "Lets not keep our friends waiting I am sure their sick of their miserable lives" He said to Darnak and Alesta, his tone somewhere between amusement and cruelty. Karl's shield fell into place at his forearm once more and he pounded it twice with the broad side of his axe, in hopes the noise will attract the goblins attention. ![]() Trip got cancelled, so I thought I'd start posting again. Agreed with Baldek that was a really great post DocEvil Karl wasn't one for speeches, oh he understood their importance and what a charismatic person could do with a well written one but unless they related to himself or his business bot his attention and his care will probably be spent on another things. That was the case for the mayor's speech but Sarvo was an avid listener when the sheriff started speaking. It always paid to understand a person you were going to work with, really it was no different from understand a weapon you plan to wield in battle...the more you knew about both the better off you were. What better chance to know someone than to watch him as he addressed a gathering of people and even should his words be nothing but well constructed and polished lies than that would still tell Karl something very important that sheriff was less a lawman and more of a smart conman who somehow found his way to the job. This was not the case with this Hemlock fellow however; the man seemed not to care that he was bringing down the people's mood in a festival, just to remind them of the importance of upholding law and order A sheriff who doesn't fool around, been a while since I've worked with one of those... As he continued listening to the armed man speak Karl leaned back in his chair, content with what he was able to gleam about the sheriff...for now at least. DM DoctorEvil wrote: "Ahem, it appears the venerable Lonjiku Kaijitsu cannot be with us. Apparently, he has come down suddenly ill. We wish him a speedy recovery." As the somber and grave message of the sheriff ended, Karl refocused his sight upon the stage to see who was up next Lonjiku Kaijetsu eh? A relative of Ameiko probably. Never thought her family to be close to those in power here His eyes briefly went into the direction of the owner of the Rusty Dragon but then returned to the speakers just in time to see a flamboyantly dressed man take the stage and almost immediately take a jab at the woman he was just thinking about I guess every festival has to have a jester...but being funny doesn't seem to be a requirement Had he still been the thug he was in his naive teenage days, he would have probably considered making the man eat his words for insulting a beautiful woman who let him stay at her inn for just a tale, but he wasn't, still he couldn't deny it would be fun watching the man with a bit of fear and nervousness on his face instead of the smug mask he put up for the audience. "You don't look like you are from around here Nadine, but it's not like the rest of us are" Commented Sarvo his voice betraying no clear emotions and his hand motioning to the rest of those gathered. "Strangers flock together in Sandpoint" Karl rapped the table with the fingers of his right hand as his vision moved from one person to another "Which reminds me did any of you notice any signs of an old fire on any of the buildings you've been to here?" Asked the bounty hunter, his voice carrying a subtle grade of seriousness. ![]()
![]() "Already made a friend eh?" Said Karl as he approached Alesta and the woman that sat next to her. The bounty hunter casually brought his thumb in the Shoanti's direction "This is Ahdak, you probably remember seeing him at the Rusty Dragon" Karl took a seat that faced the two women and paid some extra attention to Nadine Something to hide under that cloak? He wondered to himself before letting his vision go elsewhere, while noting to himself to keep the mysterious woman in mind...just in case. ![]()
![]() It was worth the wait :) The sound of a fist clashing against flesh turned Karl's attention briefly towards the match and the brawling dwarf who seemed to be struggling against his latest opponent. Fights were strange that way; no matter how many you've seen, and no matter how well you thought you gouged the strength of somebody, the outcome sometimes could be comparable in its variability to the toss of a coin. This is why the bounty hunter never took chances unless he was assured they were worth it, defeat could always be hiding in the guise of an assured victory and unless you had a plan of escape it will take you down quicker than a betrayer's knife to your back. "Some despite all that power and influence are fools, others as you mentioned are just trying to catch their foes off-guard, but even those who aren't fools have other flaws that can be used against them" An unreadable expression came over the Sarvo's face, but his eyes which were looking away from Ahdak betrayed a look akin to a stalking beast for only a moment "We all have chinks in our armors, the wise, the smart and those who know better keep these hidden, buried deep down but not forgotten" His expression melts to an easily understood mild expression, his grey eyes now return to the half-orc "A man who forgets his weaknesses won't know what and when to dodge" Karl half turned his body away from the ring "Guess this little show won't be much fun for long" He motioned towards the ring with his right hand. Ready to move on when the fight reaches its conclusion. ![]()
![]() Karl turned his head slightly in the direction of the fight. He saw the former victor take a blow from his new opponent Hmm so there are other guys who know a thing or two about fighting besides our friend with the strange stance...could be a lucky blow The mercenary looked around himself and tried to hide this fact by acting like he accidently dropped something on the floor and was attempting to retrieve it. Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 To look around. Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 Trying to get a hunch about any interesting or suspicious looking characters Karl might find. Bluff: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 To try and mask the activity.
