Kala Krunn's Appearance and Backstory:
How Does Kala Look?
Kala Krunn is a tall, pale-skinned woman whose frame could best be described as muscular with a bit of fat around the arms, legs and abdomen. You probably wouldn't notice though. Between her coat of bear pelt and wolf fur that she wears over her boiled leather armour, her skirt made from heavy cloth and her big leather boots adorned with the same wolf fur, only Kala's face and hands are exposed. This would allow you to see that her unkempt brown hair reaches her shoulders while her steely grey eyes look like they are constantly in glare mode. Kala has ways of carrying many pounds of equipment without having to use her hands. The most obvious is the backpack she wears on an equally obvious location. This many-pocketed leather backpack has a few hooks on the outside that Kala uses to hold a woollen bedroll, a massive hammer with a layer of blunt spikes on the head, a long-handled axe with a crescent-shaped blade made of cold iron, two wooden bows (one large, one small) and a leather quiver containing several arrows. Kala also wears a belt that, in addition to preventing her skirt from falling, holds a pouch for her money and a cold iron knife with one smooth edge and one serrated edge. What's Kala's Story?
Every person in every clan in the village had to contribute in some way to the survival of the community and the Krunn clan was no different. Kala's job was to make bows for her father and his friends, who would hunt the creatures of the forest. The slain beasts were then taken back to the settlement and cooked by people like Kala's mother, and then when the scent of dinner (or indeed anything at all) attracted the attention of the frost giants, warriors like Kala's brother would take up arms and fend them off. Although Kala was good at making bows, she longed for the chance to use one. Her father did not approve of this desire, claiming that Kala would be like a hunk of meat on legs if she went hunting and the bears would eat her unless the wolves ate her first. Despite this, Kala did one day venture into the forest with a spare shortbow to try her hand at hunting. When she did, however, she didn't encounter any wolves or bears. What she encountered was a gang of frost giants. Had it been just one or maybe two, Kala might have been able to run back home and warn her people, but with how many there were, such a meeting could only end one way. After capturing Kala to use as a slave, the frost giant gang raided the village and, though the warriors fought valiantly, the frost giants got away with quite a few new slaves. In their new home, the frost giants’ captives toiled away for their oppressive masters and those who could toil no more were made into lunch. Those villagers who were lucky enough to avoid capture felt that a rescue mission would be too risky. As a result, Kala remained in captivity and only survived for as long as she did by virtue of her strength and hardiness. After a few months of forced labour, Kala would try to break free of the chains and shackles that bound her whenever she wasn't being watched. Most of these attempts were unsuccessful but they did gradually weaken her bonds. Then came the fateful day, nearly a year since Kala's enslavement, when she finally broke her bonds. She then tried to sneak away from the frost giants, but it didn't take long for one to spot her trying to escape. With stealth no longer an option and a fight being incredibly one-sided, there was only one thing Kala could do. She ran. It wasn't long before several frost giants chased after her. Fortunately, Kala was faster than her pursuers, but she couldn't afford to stop for too long, so she kept on running, even past her home village. The frost giants who were chasing her were distracted by the village as they thought they could get more than enough new slaves to replace the one that got away. Whether they were right or not, Kala just kept running without looking back and didn't stop until she eventually reached another forest much further from the frost giants' home. Since then, there have been no signs of frost giants coming after Kala, but she remains on the move. She cannot go back home as it is too close to danger and she cannot stay still for too long for fear of capture. Her travels so far have taken her through both untamed wilderness and bastions of civilisation. The former have tested Kala's ability to survive in dire conditions while the latter have taught her how to acquire tools and weapons as well as the joys of ale. |
