About Kage Kurai

Background:

Kage Kurai is the scion of a clan of Wayang ninjas which came to Varisia some decades ago. He isn't entirely clear on all the details himself; he was a small child at the time, and remembers little but endless stretches of painful brightness and unrelenting cold. The elders of his clan are...tight-lipped about it, even to this day. At any rate, he has grown up in Northwestern Avistan, often in the great cities of Magnimar and Korvosa, but sometimes traveling the smaller towns, such as Riddleport and Sandpoint. During this time, he has learned the rudiments of his clan's trade-hiding, watching, striking from unseen positions, relieving people of their valuables, preferably without their knowledge, entering and leaving secure areas without being detected. He has honed his skills most especially with stealth, and has become quite good at remaining undetected, or at least not being suspected. His clan elders have said that the shadow is strong with him, and he has only begun to learn what that means.
Several years ago, he was sent to Sandpoint, on a long-term mission to observe the Kaijitsu family, and do what he could to ensure their safety. He still doesn't know why, but he has pieced together that it has something to do with the distant land that his ancestors, and apparently those of the Kaijitsu, came from. He arrived to late to save the lives of the elder Kaijitsus, but serves his clan's purposes by watching over Ameiko. He has found ways to make ends meet while there, serving as a night watchman, aiding Shalelu Andosana (whom he has become friends with) in surveilling the local goblin tribes, and even cleaning up around the Rusty Dragon, all while masquerading as a particularly eccentric gnome. He suspects that some Sandpointers know he is not a gnome, but as his kind is exceedingly rare in Avistan, he doubts they know quite what he is. He's glad to keep it that way. Sometimes his pursuits have seen him make common cause with Sczarni bandits, though he tries not to deal with such riff-raff more than he has to, out of worry for his reputation around town. He's still waiting and watching, wondering why his clan sent him here. But he trusts theelders, so he bides his time. Wayangs have a lot of time, and a commensurate amount of patience.

Appearance:

Kage Kurai constantly wears a black cloak, drawn up to hide his face. Most who have met him have no idea what he looks like, beyond the general idea of his short stature. His habitual re-casting of Oath of Anonymity helps out with that. Beneath his cloak, he wears the timeless garb of his clan; a close-fitting bodysuit of dark fabric called a Shinobi Shozoku. Up his sleeves, he carries a pair of daggers, and at his side hangs a rapier. He's not sure how to use it, exactly. But his clan worships Count Ranalc, and he knows that the Count favors the rapier. Maybe one day he'll figure out how to put it to good use.
