Jym shrugs and switches to the Sylvan language to converse with Elebrin.

"Eh. I'm sure she knows how to sail. I think the attitude is something she thinks will help her run the ship better. She's probably intimidated by you and subconsciously attracted to me. It's your call, Elebrin. I'll be on the other ship with Captain Venkalie. But if you don't want to, we can find another captain."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 14 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 14 + 2 - 2 = 15

Jym shrugs.

"I assure you that the assessment of time wastivities is mutual! I had hoped that a captain such as yourself would be able to react to an unexpected situation without such defensiveness, but it looks like Captain Venkalie's recommendation was unfounded. I'm not sure what I'll tell her when you're not included on the voyage when she's expecting you to come along.

"I am confident, however, how my mater will feel when I next write her and include details of your rudeness! You may not put much stock in her opinions, but you'd be surprised how fast her gossip can spread!"

With that 1, it may be up to Elebrin to save this interview. But don't be afraid to decide to not hire the captain. As Kirth said above we have plenty of others we can tap.

The other prospective captain's appointment is not long after Venkalie's. A lean, tough-looking lady who doesn't seem to spend much time on personal grooming swaggers in, a heavy basket-hilted sword hanging at her side. "I'm Lirith Veldirose," she says. "Which of you is Lavinia Vanderboren?" she adds, eying Elebrin speculatively.

"Why are you assuming that one of us is Lady Vanderboren?" Jym asks defensively. "That seems presumptuous. And if it is one of us, don't you think it's obvious which one of us it would be? Ooh, unless you're thinking that a human noble is wearing an illusion to make herself look like a male halfling of heroic stature. Crafty."

Jym falls silent to consider this.

Current HP: 28/28 -- Perc: -1/+1 in cities -- Inspiration: 14/14 rnds -- Vanderboring Estate Map

Before Captain Venkalie leaves, Jym asks him his opinion of Lirith Veldirose.

I was referring to the candidates that Lavinia already has in mind. She implies that she has at least two, HERE. We just interviewed one (Captain Venkalie), but I don't see the name of the other captain she has in mind.

Current HP: 28/28 -- Perc: -1/+1 in cities -- Inspiration: 14/14 rnds -- Vanderboring Estate Map

How many available candidates are available for the two captain positions? It sounds like only two, but I'm not sure. If only two, Jym will agree with Elebrin, confirm with Captain Venkalie that she has the position, and ask her opinion of the other candidate. If there is more than two potential candidates, Jym will agree with Elebrin, tell Captain Venkalie that they will get back to her ASAP, and interview the next candidate.

Current HP: 28/28 -- Perc: -1/+1 in cities -- Inspiration: 14/14 rnds -- Vanderboring Estate Map

Jym holds up one finger and pulls Elebrin aside. He whispers so that only she can her him.

"I don't like the way he's talking about Ladyvinia. I mean, I think it's kind of funny, but will she think it's funny? Why would we hire a captain that's just going to keep talking down to her? Nobles can be prickly. What do you think? You and her seem to be more friendly than me and her, because of the emotional walls of stone that I've built for myself."

Current HP: 28/28 -- Perc: -1/+1 in cities -- Inspiration: 14/14 rnds -- Vanderboring Estate Map

Does the AP as written assume that the PCs haven't made any more progress in retrieving Lavinia's fortune than we have? Or is that a variable?

Lavinia Q. Vanderboren wrote:

Jym readily agrees, explaining that the party has an ideal good cop/bad cop routine down pat. His enthusiasm is not diminished when someone explains to him that this won't be that kind of interview.

HA HA HA HA HA! I was going to manufacture a reason for Jym to go, but seeing Lavinia bend over backwards to keep the bumbling halfling who hugs her one moment and glares at her the next is hilarious. Well done!

Jym's breath catches in his throat, and he looks up at Lavinia with watery eyes.

"You'd do that for me? How can I say no?

"Metaphorically, not literally. Because that--never mind, I'm in."

"First, where is this colony?
Second, what is in the colony that will help you?
Two, who else knows about the colony?
Three, who all are you bringing with you to the colony?

I'm not sure if I'll ever take the time to get my head wrapped around how spells are built, though.

Let me know if I'm off, because I'n not fully caffeinated yet:

Fort: +2 level +0 class +1 Con +1 resistance = +4
Ref: +2 level +2 class +3 Dex +1 resistance = +8
Intu: +2 level +2 class -1 Wis +1 resistance = +4
Will: +2 level +0 class +4 Cha +1 resistance = +7

Oh yeah, the +1 from my magic hat! That's why my numbers were off. (But Will is also a good save for bards, so that's a 9.)

Okay, I still have to update numen and go through Kirth's deep-dive post, but the job search takes precedence.

Okay, mostly leveled up.

Max HP: 4 (rounded down half of d8) +1 (Con bonus) +1 (Favored class bonus) = +6

BAB +1

Spell Capacity is now 4th level. I've picked up silence and saving grace. I haven't looked at how they convert to Kirthfinder, yet.

Class Abilities:
- Lore Master (better Knowledge checks)
- Sound Mastery (sonic resistance; sound lance is an at-will spell)

Nothing crazy concerning the skills

Kirth, do my saves look right?

Still need to update numen.

1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

"No! There's still a very good chance that you'll die again in the next few minutes! But you're alive for now! Hooray!"

Jym un-self-consciously give Lavinia a hug.

I'm in an online training thing, so I don't want to spend too much time typing, but...

Jym long-windedly questions whether it was wise to split up so much during the first wave of attacks while comparing the situation to his 3rd cousins (on his brother's girlfriend's side) who were conjoined at the hip. Also, let's get our elf guy out of the tree.

Also, do we want to bot Bal again, or should Jym just start doling out his rum potions?

Jym is silent for a long moment as he stares at Uro's unmoviing body. He looks accusingly at Lady Vanderboren before reminding Bal to heal Ixotl before the Bullywugs come back.

Yeah, I was thinking we were in trouble, too! I feel like damage is primarily Uro's and Ixotl's job, and I should focus on buff/de-buffing (and maybe Bal an Elebrin are a mix of the two?), but I was wondering if I shouldn't have gone with damage-dealing wand there, for a while. Glad it worked out.

For a standard wand, the DC of a 1st level spell would normally be 11, but then the duration would also be only 1 round, which is sort of useless. So let's add a metamagic feat that lets it function as a staff, using the wielder's caster level and DC:

Yeah, I slipped up when I assumed the wand would use my 1st level spell DC, forgetting the actual magic item DC standard. Sorry. I like the metamagic feat. How does it affect the numen cost?

Jym calls down to Bal. "Hey, can you heal the guy in the tree and Uro? If not, I can toss down some of my potions!"

He looks at the hole in the manor wall.

"Do you think they'll come back?" he asks Elebrin and Lady V.

If only Uro had the cleave feat! Does Kirthfinder still have the cleave feat? Or did Kirth turn it into scaling, BAB-dependent inherently magical class feature? I forget.

Still maintaining his inspiration, Jym fires of a shot from his cause fear wand at one of the bullywugs attacking Uro. If he can't see one due to the fog, he'll target the shaman, instead. DC is 15.

Jym starts to pluck a rousing tune to inspire his comrades. You'd think this would be hard to do on a ridiculous instrument like a fiddle, but Jym makes it work. Magic, y'all.

+2 bonus to attacks, damage, saves vs. fear

And actually, we're still waiting for Elebrin to act, I believe. Last post was over a month ago, so I'm going to recommend we bot her next action, and she casts magic missile at the shaman. Or maybe ready her action to use that spell to disrupt the shaman's next spell?
