Male Human Paladin 1

Not entirely sure when my sword got drawn then, Jubrayl just opened the door as it was already open.

Jubrayl regarded the Gnome with some hint of suspicion. As Atherton barged past and lay out the bluff, Jubrayl wisely decided to keep his trap shut for the moment. However, it appeared that Atherton's bluff had failed.

"Look, our boss is ready with his coin and he's in a big hurry. Pretty sure Mr. Lamm would be angry if someone let this opportunity slip through his fingers. I mean, Mr. Lamm knows a lot about the city, but there are others we can speak to," Jubrayl let the veiled threat hang in the air, trusting that the Gnome's fear of reprisal at a missed opportunity for gold would override that of his fear of disturbing Gaedren.

"Atherton, obviously Mr. Lamm is too busy to see us today. We'll just have to settle on using some of our other contacts," Jubrayl turned to leave as he finished speaking.

"Well then," Jubrayl talks with a hint of disdain for his surroundings, "Let's see what we are up against, shall we?"

Crossing the courtyard, Jubrayl lays his hand upon the open door and pulls it open completely.

For Jubrayl, the night was quiet. After leaving the group, he spent several hours in quiet contemplation and devotion to Iomedae. As the early evening shadows turned to the full darkness of night, he retired to his cell in the temple, ate a sparing meal and then bedded down for the night. No dreams came to him, and he slept well, rising the next morning full of energy for the day ahead.

Before breaking fast, he carried out his strict exercise regime, banishing the cobwebs of morning grogginess to oblivion. After an hour of exercising, he ate a simple morning meal, before employing one of the temple squires to help him don his armour. Rested, and armed, Jubrayl set off for the fishery.

As he arrived, he noticed two of the party already watching the fishery although their names escaped him for the moment. With a cursory nod, he crossed over towards them.

"Good morning," he said cheerfully, "A wonderful day for doing Iomedae's will, is it not?"

Jubrayl nodded his head as he listened to the others. "Should we attack during the day, it is likely we shall manage to sow seeds of confusion thanks to the fisherfolk and customers scattering," Jubrayl said with a commanding tone. "I suggest we prepare ourselves. Atherton shall lead the way."

For a few moments, Jubrayl mulls the tactical options over in his mind. Eventually, he seems to decide upon something.

"As Istas has already mentioned, reconnaisance is of the utmost importance. We can not draw up any tactical plans until we have a fair idea as to how many adversaries we shall be facing," the tall Paladin speaks, his voice reverbarating around the room.

"However, I doubt that Lamm sells fish out of his factory. From what I have heard of the place, it is property of the King, as the previous owner died and it then defaulted," Jubrayl scratches his chin for a moment. "Not only that, but none of us look like fisherfolk and I would imagine that Lamm knows most, if not all, of the fisherfolk in the general area of his factory." Silence descended upon the room. Perhaps the others thought that their plan had hit a stone wall before it had even gotten off the ground.

"To me, that means we have two plans of action. The first, and most likely less dangerous, would be to capture one of Lamm's men and interrogate him until he gives us the information we seek," Jubrayl noticed there were a few nods and some murmurs from those gathered. No doubt he was not the only one relishing the chance to exact some revenge on the men under Lamm's control.

"On the other hand, our new colleague Atherton appears to have had some dealing with Lamm in the past," silence descended on the gathered citizens once again, "No doubt you know the kind of business that Lamm works with, Atherton. Perhaps you could be persuaded to put on a little show for Atherton, approach him with something that he might wish to buy. Whilst you are in his lair, you could appropriate some measure of the adversaries we face?"

"I concur with Istas about the children," Jubrayl continued, letting Atherton mull over the proposition that he had placed on the table, "Not only would the Guard look down upon it, I would not consider it honourable to kill a child. Might I suggest that we try to knock them unconcious where we can? I think that the less blood is spilled on this venture, the easier it will be for us afterwards."

Jubrayl seemed to think on things for a while before he spoke again. After all, this was not a matter to be taken lightly.

"As you all seem intent on bringing Lamm to justice in your own way, it would be remiss of me to allow you to participate in this without proper protection," his words seemed well thought out, as though he was weaving a web, "However, if at any point it becomes apparent that this group is out of its league, I will speak to my elders at the Temple and gain their assistance."

As Atherton makes his demands, a slow smile creeps onto Jubrayl's face. "You ask me for amnesty against possible criminal actions?"

A guarded glance from Zellera gives Jubrayl pause for thought. On one hand, he had a criminal and on the other, he had a crime lord. Jubrayl made his decision. "Very well, I agree. You have my word that I shall not report you for any crimes you commit that furthers the cause of this group."

Whilst Zellera made the reading, Jubrayl shook his head. It all seemed so foreign, so alien to him. Nonetheless, he kept his peace until the Harrowing was done.

"Again, I must voice my objections to these... cards," the Paladin said with a sigh, "We've gone from a personal grudge against Gaedran Lamm to a potential plot that encompasses the whole of Korvosa." Jubrayl heard several of those gathered grumble, but he pressed on.

"If there is such a plot, then it is something beyond the scope of my own power. Zellera, you maintain that you know of Gaedren Lamm and his whereabouts. Come with me, present yourself at the Temple of Iomedae and we shall contest your case with the Clerics. Once we have their backing, we can take our case to the City authorities and crush his criminal empire once and for all," Jubrayl's voice was powerful and resonant, and he pulled all of his charismatic weight towards the Harrower.

"If others were to present evidence, there might even be a case for leniency in judgement," Jubrayl continued, looking pointedly at Atherton.

Whilst the newcomer spoke, Jubrayl listened intently. As she spoke the address of where Gaedren Lamm could be found he had to restrain himself from turning and leaving immediately to apprehend the cretin. Instead, he remained within the confines of the room and listened a little more. As Atherton and Zellera spoke, a scowl appeared on Jubrayl's face when it became apparent that Atherton was less than legitimate.

"Criminal," spat Jubrayl, although it was under his breath. Regardless of this new-found target of disgust, Jubrayl remained where he was. If needs be, he could always bring the criminal to justice once they had left the woman's home. It was doubtful she would appreciate a fight here. As the woman spoke, Jubrayl tried to discern whether she was omitting any information.

"You have given me hope, Zellera," Jubrayl speaks when there is a break in the conversation, "You present an opportunity that I can not afford to pass over." Jubrayl bows his head slightly when he finishes speaking.

Requested Roll (1d10=4)
Sense Motive (1d20+6=15)

DM

Spoiler:
It appears that I was completely off with my skill points calculations, down eight points for creation and I'd added one instead of two for each level as well as forgetting the four extra points Humans get at creation as well as the extra one per level. All sorted now, but it means that the Sense Motive check doesn't correlate between result and roll. Just so you know why there is a discrepancy.

Jubrayl shrugs, but shows no sign of backing down.

"I've yet to see a Harrow reading that I could not replicate myself without asking the same questions. I once had a reading by a traveller during my childhood in Magnimar. He claimed that my life would be obscured by shadows and that that I would kill a loved one. Obviously, this traveller was a charlatan. Shortly after the reading, I was inducted as a Paladin and I've lived my life in the glorious light of Iomedae ever since. Granted, I do not frequently seek out... those who perform such things. However, I have seen tangible proof of the connection between Iomedae and this world, and have seen none that a pack of cards may influence anything," Jubrayl's speaks plainly, without a hint of malice.

Without a word said, Jubrayl reaches into his tabard and retrieves the Harrow card that he had been given. With a sharp flick of his hand, the card sails through the air and flutters to a stop not far from Istas'.

"From what I've seen, Harrow readings are for the weak of mind, looking for direction in life," Jubrayl rumbles, "I put my own faith into the will of Iomedae." When he finishes speaking, Jubrayl raises his silver symbol to his lips and kisses it gingerly.

"So, we are gathered as people who have been wronged by Gaedran Lamm. It looks as though he has made many enemies."

OOC

Spoiler:
Apologies for my tardiness, but my wife whisked me off for a private weekend where there was no internet access. I am back with gusto now though.

Jubrayl's gaze took in the other five people who had apparently been summoned as well. Within the folds of his tabard, he had hidden the card. A Harrow card was not exactly fitting for a man of his calling to be carrying around, but the disappearance of his younger cousin had almost driven him to the point of despair and only his unwavering faith in Iomedae had kept him from doing things to himself that he would regret later.

Affording the talkative woman some attention, Jubrayl listened to her with interest. Once she had finished conversing with the other man, Jubrayl spoke up.

"You appear to be quite knowledgable on the subject," he rumbled, his voice a deep baritone that could carry across a room with a commanding air. "Would you happen to travel in the same... social circles as our absent patron?"

Jubrayl's words seemed plain enough, but there was a trace of suspicion in his tone. Obviously, it seemed Jubrayl did not put as much stock in the Harrow deck as other citizens of Korvosa. Indeed, it seemed as though his accent was tinged with a hint of Magnimar.

"I am Jubrayl Mellachi, Paladin in service to her Holiness, Iomedae. I am here in connection with the disappearance of some children, my own cousin amongst them. If any of you have information regarding their whereabouts, I suggest you divulge this information immediately," the Paladin lets his voice reverbarate throughout the room. Whilst his words do not say anything about the subject, the way that his hand rests on the pommel of his longsword suggests that he has little problem with using martial force to deal with a problem.

"I hear that you're interested in finding Gaedren Lamm," a bright-eyed Paladin says as he moves in front of you. An embossed shield marks him as one of the faithful of Iomedae.

"You're not the only one," he remarks darkly, at odds with his handsome demeanour. His free hand tightens into a balled fist as he speaks.

Nostrus here, with Jubrayl mostly complete. Personality, background and description are in the profile if you want to have a butchers. With ability scores, City Born feat and ranks, I've managed to get Diplomacy up to +8 already. With the Missing Child trait, I've also added Gather Information to his list of class skills.

All seems to be well.
