Jayden Rice was born to a somewhat wealthy merchant family in Oppara, the city of Taldor. He should have spend his formative years learning the art of business from his parents, and then basking in luxury waiting to take care of the family business. However, like most children, he hit a rebellious patch in his teenage years, where he thought he had learned everything and understood the world perfectly.
Rice had a few friends, also from well-to-do families, that became enamored with a cult worshiping Groteus, and in particular, nihilism. This nihilist cult thought they they (and they alone) understood the dark meanings of the universe, and the truth behind ennui, and existential crisis. While most dismissed their dark pretenses as merely a 'phase,' the children continued their so-called sojourn into darkness.
Eventually, the leader of the nihilists found a ritual designed to bring 'Groteus's blessing' on his favored children. The gang decided to undertake the ritual, and Rice, now calling himself Janus 'Bloodangel' Penderghast, was first in line. However when the ritual actually worked, granting Rice the ability to manipulate shadows with no knowledge of how to control it, the cult disintegrated. None of them had actually believed that the ritual would work, and in the face actual consequences for their actions, most of the children abandoned the cult.
Life was not so simple for young Rice, who could empower shadows and lighten gravity, and would occasionally (and unintentionally) shoot blasts of gravity from his arms. His father, not knowing what to do, turned to his cousin Ospery, a pathfinder. Begrudgingly, Osprey took Rice under his wing and had him admitted to the pathfinder society, which helped him focus his powers. Today 'Penderghast' still goes by his nihilist cult name and attitude, not knowing any other way to interact with people in a meaningful way.
