"Yes. It was... It's very hard to be someone special in this world in this day and age without everyone wanting you to do something for them, because hey, you're special, you've got these talents whereever or however it came from, and hey, why are you upset that you don't have any time for yourself?" Jane pauses for a moment, keeping an eye out once more. "It's nice to be able to live without having to worry as much about some things, and doing small works to make good things happen, rather than big works to make small things happen?"
Female* The Mediator Brick
That's kind of what it felt when things went crazy. Slightly different on the source, but.. "Hey. Hey. Listen. I'm NOT very religious, okay, but I do know one thing about this world, and that it doesn't matter who or what's been blessing you, people still are people, and they have their faults and flaws. It sounds like your father is neglecting you or abusing you, and either way, making a break for it is the best choice. Trust me, I've been sort of down the same road, and while the road is hard, the freedom to live on it is the best thing since.... well." Jane kept an eye out despite the reassurances. Someone's doing something bad to this kid, and I honestly hope I don't run into them.
Female* The Mediator Brick
"Gabe? I was actually going to get a bite to eat and possibly a cerveza or two, but as far as 'messing up my night'? Far from it. Night was already doing a slow death spiral down the drain LONG before I left work. Ever hear the term 'weirdness magnet'? Tonight's been sort of like that." Jane was honest as she kept a watch out for anyone attempting to disrupt the 'rescue in progress'. She attempted to kill a little bit of time by 'small talk'. "So, healer, you say? No, no, don't panic -- just hadn't heard of that one myself. What's it like healing someone?"

The cart-wrangler was very careful to be as 'normal' as possible when she shook the young man's hand. "Check the seasonal area, there might be some flip-flops over in that area, or the mark-down bins. Long shot, but better than nothing." Jane agreed with Brad, and also was keeping an eye out for anyone searching for Gabe. Kid sounds like he's had some lousy breaks, needs a chance at a decent one. Kind of like what I've had the past few months....
Female* The Mediator Brick
Jane would have accepted the hand and give it a firm non-crushing shake. "Jane. We'll save the rest for the moment, better for everyone that we keep the introductions brief and to the point. How long have you been on the run, and what kind of resources does your family typically bring to bear on finding you?" The woman's demeanor and stance have subconsciously shifted to a somewhat more... intent focus, almost like the guise of being a part-time clerk at the Save-A-Lot was just that.
Female* The Mediator Brick
Jane looked at the kid and grimaced but did not laugh. Mixed signals played through her and she really did. not. like. that. at. all. "Definitely not church-folks, and... we'll go with what his plan is. Couldn't afford a room on my budget." There was a pause of consideration as she collected her thoughts. "And on that whole 'avoiding family thing'? I'm right there with you, kid. Love them or hate them, sometimes a body needs to be away from them."
Female* The Mediator Brick
"Hey. It's going to be okay. Just want to make sure you're doing alright, okay?" Despite not looking all that impressive nor all that intimidating, Jane positions herself a little bit further down the alley, still keeping between Brad and the unknown person possibly in trouble. "World's a rough place, promise not to laugh, no matter what, okay? Mean people suck. Have to deal with them at work all night." Jane creeps a bit further forward... Dexterity+Stealth: 3d10 ⇒ (1, 8, 9) = 18

Jane didn't have the fancy stuff. She did, however, have a bit of a stubborn streak, and now that she got someone with her, she started making her way down the alley in front but not blocking the other fellow. "Hello? Somebody there? Are you hurt?" Charisma+Rapport(to get a response): 4d10 ⇒ (9, 5, 4, 7) = 25

Jane had been ready for *that fight* with Edwards. It was probably the most 'fire' she'd shown since she started working at the Save-A-Lot, even. "You want, next time I just leave the person to bleed out in our lot so we can get our asses sued off? I didn't THINK so." Jane couldn't do that, but there's always that bluff and bravado that's required in such negotiations, and she had come in from an extremely stressful situation. Fifteen minutes was fine, and that just primed the taste buds for a nice smooth cool cervesa at the local tacqueria. Jane wasn't a drunk. Heck, it took a fifth of scotch to even get her feeling 'buzzed'. But old habits die hard and the cool comfort of a nice cold beer would be just the thing the doctor ordered. Or she ordered. Her path was casual as she saw the guy approach and heard the sobbing down the alley. Jesus F'n Christ! What IS IT with TONIGHT? "Evenin'." She gave the alley a look, then Brad, then the alley. "You hear that?" Either Brad would do the typical thing and wander on down the street and out of the area, thus freeing up Jane to check on who could be crying, or he'd agree and she'd have someone along with her so she wouldn't have to do any 'pushing' of the heroic envelope, as it were...

As tempted as she was to do something to the apparent illicit material, the amount of tirade that had erupted from the driver had pretty much confirmed that the police would be dispatched and that there'd probably be an investigation. Jane focused her attention on the injured fellow, and kept him stable. And thankfully, it seems that her supervisor had managed to do the right thing for a change, and she'll gladly 'hand off' the case to trained professionals when they arrive. When she got done with that, though, she would head back in, give a brief report (carefully omitting any mention of the cart beyond pushing it off the property) and ask if she could at least take a break, or go home to get changed. That route may take her to the local tacqueria, because yes, that was the kind of day she's had so far. Trying to get to the rest of the party, honest!

Seriously? For the love of Christ, woman, you're going for your stash rather than taking care of this guy? That's REALLY going to win you points with the cops. Jane would normally be all about the liberties of the individual. That was, in fact, part of the reason for the escape from the 'Nova life'. But this had shaped up to be one heckuvamess and she had no desire to raise her profile any higher than necessary. She would have used her own phone, but it was in her locker because the Save-A-Lot had a strict policy on phone usage during work hours. She carefully tossed the phone to the drunk woman and then turned her attention back to the other occupant. "Okay, mister, you stay awake, okay? Help is on the way. It's going to be okay." Jane's workplace got another glance as she went about trying to help the more injured of the two crash victims. Damnit, Edwards, normally you'd be out riding my ass already, what is going on in there? Yes, she repeated herself. It's as much to try and calm herself down and not do something stupidly dramatic and heroic like fly the guy to a hospital right now. Not if I can help it.

Jane looked at the drunk woman before heading over to the passenger's side. "Call 911!" When she got there she attempted to determine what if anything she can do to help the guy until the police or paramedics arrive. And if Edwards was still watching her on the camera, he'll have seen what happened and will be his own version of hero. Medicine+Intelligence: 3d10 ⇒ (2, 1, 9) = 12 "Mister, don't move. Just hold tight, okay? Help is on the way. "Someone call 911!"

Jane forced a smirk on her face when the cart took the course out of the lot and out of the collective misery of the Save-A-Lot. She started to turn to make a 'cleaning hands' motion when the car is a bit more energetic than she expected and then cowered a bit to sell the 'helpless associate in the path of uncontrolled vehicle'. Of course, to Edwards, it's probably her just slacking off at work. Manipulation+Subterfuge(If allowed, Persuasive if applicable): 5d10 ⇒ (4, 5, 5, 8, 3) = 25 Her normal gut reaction would have been to run, but that would have been a bit of a giveaway. And just walking away from such a scenario would be a very bad thing, because it would make it look like she somehow planned it. Well.. she did... but still.. And then the car came half-into the lot. Well, then. THAT requires a good samaritan to go see if the person's okay! She made a hand motion to the camera like picking up a phone as she frantically pointed to the crashed vehicle, and then ran to help the occupant. At the edges of the camera, her adrenaline pumping a little bit, it'd all be easily explained. "Oh my GOD! ARE YOU ALRIGHT?" Cue the worried person who just had something well above her paygrade dumped into her lap as she hoped that her tyrannical supervisor did the intelligent thing and called 9-1-1. Jane's will be attempting to render aid as best a cart-wrangler can do. It's only fair, she DID indirectly guide the chain of events...

Jane pulled up as she saw the cart and let out a slumping sigh. Really, Bill? Really? Are your eyes that bad that you can't see the BIG OL FREAKIN' TARGET LOGO? She tried to figure out what to do with the offending disabled basket when opportunity knocked of a sort. That idiot is going to get someone killed. But I can't intervene directly, not with Captain Blow-Hard watching on the camera... The shopping cart got another glance. The cart-wrangler feigned extreme frustration (though it didn't take much) and shoved the cart to a potential destiny with the errant vehicle, to end up on the side where any people might be at so the presumed drunk would have to turn away from bystanders, hopefully enough to not crash but wake up and get the heck out of here. ie, Jane aimed the cart for the general area 'opposite' side of the car, if it hit the car that might be a thing, if it made the driver swerve hard enough that might also be a thing. And yes, with the busted wheel and all. Lucky push... *cough cough cough* She watched the course of the cart with concern, and started to chase after it until she reached the very edge of the sidewalk. While some might joke about not straying too far from there, her concern was not losing her job while lives were being saved and the attention partially moved away from her.
Female* The Mediator Brick
Jane made her way outside to retrieve the wayward cart, deftly avoiding two shady folks lingering by the post chain-smoking some cheap cigarettes. That's the standard clientele for the Save-A-Lot at this time of night, and she wasn't going to make waves or get hit for 'poor customer service'. As she makes her meandering pace along, she keeps an eye out for other carts, so she can't be accused of being too literal, and aside from which, outside is away from the PA (if not the cameras). So a few moments of blessed quiet is just what the doctor ordered.

There is a strong preference personally for the third person 'as if you're reading it in a story'. When other folks use 'first person' it ruins the immersive quality of the writing because *I* (as a reader) am not the one doing the actions, and *I* don't like words being put to my actions. Not a lot of people do. It's jarring and ruins the sense of narrative. example: If the reader sees this (First person, present): I murder the school and put it to the torch, it is hotbed of sedition, anyways. Then it's putting it to the reader that THEY are doing this action, right now, rather than the character in the writen text. Written in third person, past though, it takes on this quality.. Paxton murdered the school and put it to the torch, it was a hotbed of sedition, anyways. Edit: GM ninja'd me, need to learn to read.

Going to guess that Edwards used 'Paxton' and all the aliases and names is confusing as heck because being incognito does that? Otherwise, there could be a long while for the supervisor to get a response to his work request, eh? =P Jane slumped a bit. Captain Ego had been at it all night. Seriously, Edwards had enough ego-power to almost qualify for Nova status. Sadly, it took a bit more than that to actually BE one. First had been the cleaning of the restroom when some drunken person -- at least, that's what folks presumed, probably from Red -- had made a mess of things. Then there was the constant paging over the PA after she'd gone to break. If she didn't need the job and the low-key location, she would have helped the guy shove his head somewhere very uncomfortable. And she wasn't a violent person. Be cool. Take a deep breath. Remember, this is an escape. This is much better than what you were doing before. Relax. This had become an increasingly common mantra of late, given how the supervisor had been riding her ass. Putting on the OHSHA-mandated bright yellow and orange vest, she ventured outside, forcing herself to walk slow towards the indicated cart, even if it made El Jefe ten kinds of pissed off. Because going at 'normal' speed would be a dead give-away, even though she wasn't a speedster. Just a few more hours and then tonight will be over. Just a few more hours. Hopefully won't get called in tomorrow. That'd suck after an overnight... Not that it really would suck, she was the freakin' Energizer bunny when it came to pulling hours but it'd involve faking like she was exhausted. And that was harder to do than it sounds. |
