Here are some post release updates to this topic from the core rulebook. They fixed the untrained armor clause.
5th level:
16 Dex Wizard, 1st level Mage Armor
AC 21 = 10 + 1 item +3 Dex +2 Trained +5 level
16 Dex Wizard, 2nd level Mage Armor (reasonable, it is only 1/3 their 2nd level spells)
This is no good. The mage armor doesn't get another bonus unless heightened to 4th level.
16 Dex Wizard, took Fighter Multiclass, +1 expert Scale Mail
+1 Magic Medium Armor is only a 3rd level item, so not unreasonable at this level.
+1 scale mail (unless the 16 Dex wizard also has 14 Str, this armor is going to be +3 AC, +2 max dex, 2 bulk, -2 ACP and -5' move)
AC 22 = 10 + 3 item +2 Dex +2 Trained +5 Level
A little better but not much. This trades -5' move, a magic item and a precious feat for 1/3 your 1st level spells. I think I'd rather have the fighter types in the armor than waste it on the mage who at least has a backup option. You also have to have a 14 STR and 14 DEX to take the dedication. I think this is only really viable if you plan on going the battle wizard/magus way whole heartedly. Those points could be better spent in other areas.
16 Dex Wizard, took Fighter Multiclass, +1 Breastplate
Breastplate will give +4 AC, +1 max dex, 2 bulk, -2 ACP and -5' move
AC 22 = 10 + 4 item +1 Dex +2 Trained +5 level
Gets +1 to all saves, Bulk 2, -5 movement, -2 ACP (reduced once for Expert armor, again for Potency). No difference to the scale mail for armor but requires a 16 str to avoid the penalties.
16 Dex Wizard, non-proficient, +1 Breastplate
AC 15 = 10 +4 item +1 Dex +0 Untrained +0 level
This is where it goes into the toilet. When you are untrained you don't get any bonus for training including your level (pg 10).
It is never worth to wear armor in which you are untrained.
