Strategy:

To be written.

Appearance:

Ioann’s most striking feature is his expression: it is filled with anger (see Alias picture!). Otherwise, the man and his clothes look worn out. The blackness of his trench coat is slowly fading, smears of half washed dirt dots his gray shirt, a hole can be seen at the knee of his breeches and the soles of his riding boots are wearing thin. His dark brown hair is shoulder long, greasy and clearly cut by his own hand. Yet, his beard is freshly shaved. At last, a glint of evil can be seen in the depth of his brown eyes.

Background for other players:

It is said that Ioann is a fallen noble. He must have taken it hard for he is usually found in taverns drinking all night long. The man doesn’t talk much, preferring to keep to himself. Some say he is evil, for there are stories of him slaying thieves and thugs and the glint in his eyes is evil. Yet, there are other stories about him saving people from certain death without ever thinking about his own life. He is most certainly a troubled man.

Background:

Background or how Ioann went from prodigy to barbarian.

Ioann was born in the country of Lastwall as the 4th son of a bourgeois family of taldan and varisian descent. His varisian ancestors had emigrated to the country right after its foundation at the end of the shining crusade and mingled with taldan crusaders. The varisian side was originally from Ustalav but moved to Lastwall in order to protect the world from a possible return of the whispering tyrant. Over the centuries, they rose to a prominent station within the government, securing lands and some amount of power.

Ioann showed great promise at a young age, showing upright moral standard, sharp wits, wisdom unparalled for his age and an affinity for leadership. His childhood was an easy one, as tutors came to teach him, he would easily learn their lessons, other children would generally follow his lead. His parents were highly supportive yet did not pressure him since his sibblings were already taking charge of most of their land.

By the age of 14, everyone could tell that Ioann would become a great paladin and guardian of the country. However, before embarking upon paladin training, Ioann wanted to learn more about the planes of existence. This topic had piqued his interest for a few years and he had become quite knowledgeable on the subject. Yet, being already so knowledgeable on the subject, his parents had a hard time finding a proper tutor. After much research, they found Professor Lorrimor. Ioann was then sent to his estate to study with him for a year. The exchange proved quite successful, Ioann getting along with pretty much everyone in the estate and learning on a topic he was much interested in.

However, he did not get along with the professor so easily. Being the taskmaster that he was, Lorrimor would push Ioann to his limits, something that had never happened to the young teenager. Since everything had always come easily to Ioann, he despised the professor for making everything too hard. Yet, with time, he understood the reasons which made him grow and helped him become disciplined. Also, this understanding allowed him to grow closer to the professor and truly admire the man.

As planned, Ioann returned to Lastwall at the age of 15. There, he trained for 3 years to become a paladin’s squire, learning the basics of battle. It became quickly apparent that he was made to be a warrior since he was not only smart, wise and charismatic, he was also exceptionally strong. Actually, he was stronger than anyone had ever seen before. It is at that time that he became fascinated with a sword named Sabie Rau that had been owned by the family for quite some time. The sword was huge and had never been wielded by anyone for the past 900 years. It was said that their ancestor had wielded it during the shining crusade. Yet, since then, no one had been able to use it due to a lack in strength. Ioann decided to try it. Within a few months he became quite proficient with it. Unfortunately, his interest for the sword slowly became obsession, as he would spend all his time practicing with it.

One faithful day, while sparring with one of his parent’s retinue, he broke the man’s sword and slayed him in one hit. The case was brought to court; yet, all the witnesses swore it was an accident. Ioann was freed, but he knew he should not have been, for at the moment he had slain the man, he had wanted to kill him, and the one blow he had landed caused him the most intense satisfaction. He had liked it, and it disturbed him to his core.

The very night of his release, Ioann crept out of his room, stole Sabie Rau and left the parental estate. Truth is, he could not bear to face his family or anyone he had ever known again, the guilt was too strong. Even worst, the bloodlust would not satiate and he could not find it in himself to leave the sword. With money he had, he was able to buy his way out of Lastwall, escaping the people sent by his family to bring him back.

With time, he found his way to Ustalav, throwing away his money on alcohol and drugs. The years of debauchery and torment from guilt took their toil, wearing away his mind. With time, he lost all his will and most of his wits and leadership. Now, he is a broken man and every time he grips his sword, he is filled with the need to kill. Luckily, this has not happened often, for his face full of sorrow and hatred scare most people away.

One day, he overheard a conversation about professor Lorrimor, hope came back to him for he knew that this man could help him get rid of the sword and the lust. He wrote to him, asking to meet him as soon as possible. The reply was not what he expected: he was invited to the man’s funerals.

General personality:

In a few words:
Good hearted, but hating himself and the world. In search of redemption, yet too weak willed to take the first step. Noble yet transformed to a common man.

At length:
Ioann is a gloomy and sad man. His hatred for himself is great, yet he would not say so, preferring to believe that he hates the sword that “possesses” him. His will is eroded and he does not know what to do with his life. The man wants to redeem himself, yet he does not know how and is reluctant of using his sword because the bloodlust might overtake him.

Otherwise, Ioann is well educated and can appear quite noble. However, the last three years of wandering have changed is normal demeanor as he now appears to be a poor uneducated traveller.

A kind heart is still beating within Ioann, but it is masked by his guilt and hatred for himself. Thus, even though he might help the poor and weak (when he is not in a tavern), he would not see it as an act of good but as a habit.

Sabie Rau:

Sabie Rau is a large cold iron bastard sword with inscriptions upon it. The inscriptions are in an ancient tongue that few can decipher. Ioann thinks one of the symbol means Bar-Taphon, as such, he has started to believe that the sword was created by the lich, is evil and has control over its wielder. He believes that destroying the sword might free him, but without proof, he does not want to endanger it (whether it is because it was owned by his family or because he is weak willed is unknown).

Whether the sword is truly evil or whether the evil actually resides in Ioann is to be seen.

Role/Foreseen advancement:

Ioann is made to be a frontline fighter and partly a debuffer (he will be using intimidate a lot). When fighting against non-evil races, he will use is fists to give them a chance to live. However, once wounded, he will enter rage and draw his sword.

To show Ioann’s possession (whether real or imaginary), I plan on taking eldritch heritage and improved eldritch heritage (abyssal).

Furthermore, I plan on taking rage powers that create feat into enemies as well as dazzling display and possibly feats to increase intimidate.

Other rage powers will mostly depend on the needs of the groups.

No multi-classing planned.

A representative scene in Ioann’s life:

”Give me all your money or I’ll cut ya!” says the gang leader to a passerby.

The man, looks around shaking in fear as he sees he is surrounded by thugs.
”I… I can’t, it’s the money for my wife’s medicine.”

”Then, you are done for, get him boys!” says the gang leader as his lackeys approach the poor frightened man.

They quickly overpower him and bring him to their boss. As he prepares to stab the man with is dagger a neutral yet strong “No” can be heard from the darkness of the back street.

A man, rather a beggard, dressed in a long black leather jacket shakily stands up. As he does so, he drops the empty glass bottle he was holding, which shatters on the cobblestones.

”Get lost pall” says the gang leader. Yet, the beggard does not step down. ”Take care of this bum first, boys!” finishes the gang leader.

The closest thug approaches the beggar, laughing at the clearly drunk man. He lands a blow directly in the man’s face. There is a second of silence as the man remains unshaken and finally retaliates. One blow and the thug is down.

Follows a fight in which the beggar drops all five thugs with a single punch. Once the fight is over, the beggar turns toward the gang leader who is now holding the passerby hostage. The beggar tilts his head to the side.

”Drop it, let him be.” he says flatly.

He takes a few steps toward the remaining bandit. With each of then, the thug starts shaking, noticing the look in the man’s eyes. A cold look that seems to says that nothing will stop the beggar from taking him down.

The leader throws away the hostage and points the dagger at the beggar. Still he advances until the thug slashes at high shyly followed by a quick step back.

The beggar stops and turn his head over his shoulder, as if listening to the handle of the sword strapped to his back. His eyes become empty as he draws and oversized sword no normal human being should be able to lift. In a quick motion, he steps forward, dragging the sword tip of the sword on the ground behind him and lifting it at the last moment to slay the gang leader. Luckily, the man steps backward in time to avoid being cut in two, but not quickly enough to avoid a long cut on his chest. The thug trips and falls, losing his dagger. The beggar advances and lifts his sword. As he prepares to strike, he is stopped by the passerby who grips his hands, stopping him from slaying the thug.
”Stop! Don’t be like them!”

Slowly, the beggar’s eyes come back to life. He sheaths his sword, and without care for anyone one, leaves.

Remember, I am Ioann. I protect the world from the sword Sabi Rau. thinks the beggar as he disappears in the darkness.

Here goes Ioann. I believe this is quite representative of him, flat, no hot anger, a will to good even though battles wake up a blood lust in him. I believe neutral is the only really appropriate alignment for this. However, he would not step down from doing good deeds, even putting his life in danger. If you are stil interested, read his backstory and general personality, it should give you a better insight into his character.

Fast Movement: A barbarian's land speed is faster than the norm for her race by +10 feet. This benefit applies only when he is wearing no armor, light armor, or medium armor, and not carrying a heavy load. Apply this bonus before modifying the barbarian's speed because of any load carried or armor worn. This bonus stacks with any other bonuses to the barbarian's land speed.

  • Rage: 8/day
A barbarian can call upon inner reserves of strength and ferocity, granting her additional combat prowess. Starting at 1st level, a barbarian can rage for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + her Constitution modifier. At each level after 1st, she can rage for 2 additional rounds. Temporary increases to Constitution, such as those gained from rage and spells like bear's endurance, do not increase the total number of rounds that a barbarian can rage per day. A barbarian can enter rage as a free action. The total number of rounds of rage per day is renewed after resting for 8 hours, although these hours do not need to be consecutive.
While in rage, a barbarian gains a +2 bonus on melee attack rolls, melee damage rolls, thrown weapon dmage rolls , and will saving throws. In addition, she takes a -2 penalty to Armor Class. She also gains 2 temporary hit points per Hit Die. These temporary hit points are lost first when a character takes damage, disappear when the rage ends, and are not replenished if the barbarian enters a rage again within 1 minute of her previous rage.

While in rage, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability that requires patience or concentration.
A barbarian can end her rage as a free action and is fatigued after rage for a minute. A barbarian cannot enter a new rage while fatigued or exhausted but can otherwise enter rage multiple times during a single encounter or combat. If a barbarian falls unconscious, her rage immediately ends, placing her in peril of death.

Invulnerability: At 2nd level, the invulnerable rager gains DR/— equal to half her barbarian level. This damage reduction is doubled against nonlethal damage.
This ability replaces uncanny dodge, improved uncanny dodge, and damage reduction.

    Rage powers:
-Intimidating glare The barbarian adds her Strengh modifier in place of her Charisma modifier on all Intimidate checks to demoralize a foe. She can attempt and Intimidate check to demoralize and adjacent foe as a move action instead of a standard action. If the barbarian successfully demoralize and adjacent foe, that foe is shaken for the remainder of the barbarian<s current rage.

    Teacher’s pet:
Professor Lorrimor traveled the Inner Sea region lecturing and teaching at universities in locations as far-f lung as Manaket and Magnimar, and as different in scope as the bardic colleges of Taldor and the battle colleges of the River Kingdoms. Speaking before standing-room-only lecture halls on topics as widely ranging as military strategy, planar anomalies, theology, and agriculture, Lorrimor’s time was highly valued among those ambitious to benefit from his expertise. Despite this, he still managed to provide one-on-one assistance to the most promising of his acolytes. When he saw the potential for greatness in one of his charges, he took it upon himself to nurture their spark. You were such a student. Over the course of several months, you and the late professor spent hours debating the finer points of your topic of interest, and the intellectual doors he opened for you continue to f lavor your outlook on the world.
