"The note says nothing about the Lady," Hiram rumbles. "We pissed this Sheperd off, somehow." Even as he uses the plural, he glares pointedly at Edmund. The peasant hero was right in that a planned attack seemed unlikely. It had to have something to do with the scene they caused at the tavern. For the dozenth time that day, Hiram curses himself for not making everyone stay at the house. Still, he forces himself to focus on the present. The threat had to be dealt with... "Lambs are young sheep, yes?" he asks the group, looking around to see if anyone is following his line of thought. In truth, he was unused to talking so much, and hoped someone would come to the same conclusions he had and save him the trouble. Chelaxians had a knack for claiming the fruits of their 'inferiors' as their own, and Hiram was happy to let them think themselves smarter for it.

Hiram leans over Leandric's shoulder, squinting at the odd scribbles on the piece of paper. Linguistics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
One of our more respectable, less obviously foreign-looking party members might want to handle the talking.

Hiram looks impassively at the mess, mentally coming to terms with the fact that this lapse in vigilance will likely result in punishment. "Talk with the neighbors," he rumbles to no one in particular, but clearly not referring to himself. "Someone must have seen who did this." The Lady will not be happy, but we might as well get her some answers.

So we are not going to pick up Edmund's cash from Citadel Volshyenek? That's fine with me, but I just want everyone to be on the same page about this. It seems kind of silly to get part way there and turn back. Might as well get it out of the way.

Edmund the Tainted wrote: I suppose we can say Marcus saw me get ready and grabbed my fist as I was rearing back for the blow... That is sort of what I assumed initially. In any case, there's no sense in retconning all of that happened above. Edmund the Tainted wrote: "I understand what you are saying, but it also seems you think he should just get away without any repercussions." "Not our job," Hiram mutters in a more conciliatory tone. "At least not until the Lady says so." He turns annoyedly towards the choir of disapproving nobles and lawyers. "Enough wailing! He is stubborn, not deaf."

If he is indeed a Sczarni thug, he is likely tougher than a first level commoner. "Stop blathering excuses," Hiram growls. "I am not your mother." He turns away from the drunk (whether unconscious or scrambling away), and pushes Edmund along back towards their destination.

Hiram walks up behind Edmund and puts a firm hand on his shoulder. "Enough!" he barks, nostrils flaring. "Let the fool go. He is not a threat to us, or your honour." If the drunk has not already taken the chance to extricate himself at the talk of throat-slitting, the mercenary shoots him a glare and motions for him to start moving.

Green tea is good for you! Hiram instinctually wheels around and scans the surrounding crowd for threats. He waves everyone into a tighter formation, grasping the hilt of his falchion. "There are three of them," he growls. "Hiding in the crowd."

Hiram is ready to move on, unless someone is dying to strike up a conversation with him. :P His main concern is getting everyone back to the base before Lady Dressarosa is supposed to arrive.

Hiram grimaces back at Edmund, his sneer only slightly less hideous than the tiefling's despite his lack of fangs. He scoffs, "As you command, my lord." The mercenary shakes his head wearily and starts sipping his tea. No respect, as usual. That attitude will not serve you when dealing with the Hellknights...

Seeing that the situation has been settled for now, Hiram stomps back into the inn. As he goes, he tosses one of the guards the keys to the manacles. "We should have stayed at the house," he grumbles as he slumps into his chair.

Hiram glances at Leandric and then to Edmund, nodding emphatically at the dispersing crowd. "ჩვენ უკვე დავიწყეთ საკმარისი ჭორები..." Infernal:
"We have already started enough rumours..." At the guards approach, Hiram turns to look them up and down appraisingly.

Hiram merely grunts in response to the tiefling as they start making their way back. He still talks too much. The mercenary stops to stare down passers-by while Edmund searches the child, positioning himself between them and his pupil.

Hiram quickens his pace as he hears Edmund call out, and sees him finally get ahold of the thief. As he approaches, the warpriest grabs the pair of manacles hanging from his belt. Assuming the kid doesn't wriggle his way to freedom, Hiram will clap those on his ankles. Or shackle him from the wrist to himself or Edmund. Whichever he would prefer.

Yeah, out of character I'm totally digging how you're playing Edmund. I think we'll get some good roleplaying out of this. I do have a feeling that Shoanti was not trying to be kind, though. :P

I think their creed sums it up quite nicely: "Savagery must be quelled, in the land, home, and mind." That basically means keeping the barbarians (both human and non-human) at bay, and pushing them back to make room for civilisation when needed; defending the frontier settlements from lawlessness, bringing in brigands and others who prey on such communities; and making sure that native influences don't bring down civilisation from within, encouraging the locals to embrace the colonists' way of life. The last bit is probably also meant to remind the Hellknights not to succumb to savagery themselves, and remain 'civilised' in the face of the wild. I'm just about to play a Hellknight of the Nail in another PbP game, so I've been thinking about this quite a lot recently. :P

Vigilantism aside, Hiram is mainly concerned with not pissing off Lady Dressarosa. As a professional, he is very keenly aware that we are supposed to be a diplomat's envoy. He is definitely not happy that Edmund is putting his own agenda ahead of the mission.

Hiram glances at the foolish Shoanti. He had heard of their people. Their ferocity in battle was told of far and wide, as was their savagery. The mercenary had never faced one of them in a fight before, and he did not intend to do so unless he had to. More importantly, not unless he was ordered to. Lady Dressarosa would not be happy if they caused a public incident within hours of arriving in the city... Turning his perpetual frown towards Edmund and Leandric, he growls, "ასეც იყოს. ჩვენ არ მოდის აქ ბრძოლა." Infernal:
"Let it be. We did not come here to fight." Nevertheless, he shifts slightly so that he can more easily draw his weapon if a brawl breaks out.

When they left in a hurry, the house became available at reduced prices. This does allow us the extra space and amenities that you have no doubt noted, but yes, indeed, there are a few... unregistered renovations that needed clearing. The basement door, for example." Hiram listens intently, nodding at the mention of the door. "It may become useful," he states impassively. "Is there sewer access?" Edmund the Tainted wrote: Upon reaching the Drinkhall, Edmund walks in head held proud, and looks around for a table large enough to suit all of them. Eschewing the traditional adventurer's corner dark booth, he spots a table out in the open, in the most well lit area of the bar. With a swipe of his tail the chair is out, and the young tiefling drops to a comfortable seat, feet up on the table, calling out, "Thirsty men with good coin here, and we can use some service!" Hiram sighs wearily and sits down next to Edmund.

Some additional questions about the house: Do we have our own rooms? Does the building have its own yard, or is it really close to the nearby buildings? If there is a yard, is it walled? If not, how close are the nearest neighboring houses? Is there a back door? Perhaps most importantly, is there sewer access? If there isn't, perhaps we should make one. We need an escape route. Edit: Oh, wait a second. Does the basement lock from the outside?

After leaving his belongings in his room and finishing a cursory examination of the premises, Hiram heads towards the sounds of conversation. He is still fully armed and armored. DM Callaway wrote: After a while more of walking, Mr. Ruttle is able to lead your little group to your new home for the duration of your stay. As with much of the rest of this sector, it leaves much to be desired. However, it's passable enough, and has more than enough room to handle all of you. Most important of all though is the way it's built. The place is little more than a stylishly decorated fortress! As he had taught Edmund to do every time he enters a building, Hiram pays close attention to the tactical layout. He focuses more on possible weaknesses, and how they could be fortified. Profession (soldier): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 Well, that's a crit well spent. :P
