Calatin! You pastry swilling old dog! How came you so far from fair Magnimar?

The plump mage gets a second life! Sweet!

Heward smiles at Awgin's enthusiasm to please the captain. And hurries in the halforc's wake, no less eager to please.

Heward frowns. The halforc was right. It took some of the sheen off last night. He nods grudgingly.

"You're right of course. We bungled the fight. We didn't have weapons for a flying enemy. We have to do better there. But we did the ground work. We got ourselves where we needed to be. We did that right."

He shakes his head and catches up to Awgin's last comment. "You really are right. We have to do better. A mage. We need to be able to hit him if he flies, turns invisible, enchants us. Calatin and Laya are going to have to protect us there. We'll get their advice on gear or counter charms. If we find him. We don't have a lot to go on yet. I wish Wizzo would be more forthcoming. How do we find this joker?"

Surprised to find the desk empty, Heward leaves the report and goes upstairs to the roof, looking for Awgin.

"How'd you sleep? We did good work last night, but we have this killer mage case to deal with today. We'll have to be sharp."

Heward wakes at Mrs. Brigglespan's call. After thanking her, he washes and shaves. He ponders the day past and the day to come. We need to find out how many Mital infected. The cryptmistress may be of help.

Drying his face he walks across the room to his desk and starts his report. Commendations for Awgin, Laya, and Calatin for bravery in the face of an unusual and deadly foe. No recommendation for the fate of the Tarrigans, although their cooperation once entry had been forced was noted. He ends it with recommendations for 1. expert interrogation of Mital Cobbers to determine the number of his victims and 2. the continuation of squad-sized nighttime patrols in neighborhoods where vargouilles were. He stares at the report and wonders briefly if the recommendations overstep his bounds. Then he signs it and runs it down to Mrs. B's desk.

" Seen any of the others yet, Mrs. Brigglespan?"

I believe so.

Ready to go. Went for the iron will. Currently experiencing having the fighter turn on the party in another game. I don't want to be that guy.

Calatin ab'Halla wrote:

"I think so, but if not it will soon become apparent," said Calatin.

Oh now that was a comforting bit of understatement!

Priorities whirl through Heward's head. Sleep, paperwork, go out and get drunk, visit his parents, fish. The mage case tips the scales. Sleep it is. Before turning in he leaves a note for Mrs Brigglespan to wake him at dawn and walks to the cells for a last look at their captive.

Awgin wrote:

I didn't realize what time it was.

"Let's get this thing locked up." Awgin resists giving the head monster a 'thump'.

"Good idea."

On the way back Heward wonders how the rest of the watch has done. Were there any more vargouilles out there? Maybe he should have brought Tarrigan in for interrogation right now. Maybe he was just too tired to think straight.

He shakes his head and asks, "Calatin, do you think we got them all?"

****

Once back at MSI headquarters, Heward sends runners to let the other precincts know Mital's been captured. He looks at the mound of paperwork on his desk and sighs. Tomorrow, we're back on the mage case.

Not sure how much of that scene Heward is party to since he stayed outside with Awgin and the Head. Heward wants to get the head in a cage ASAP. He's amenable to Laya taking custody of Tarrigan while she stays at the temple.

"Calatin, Awgin, let's get this head into a cell and catch some sleep."

Is there a precinct office nearby where we could drop the head off?

Heward holds up both hands palms out. "I never said you did it to win a medal. I'm just saying it was one of the bravest things I've ever seen. Makes me proud to be in this team."

Worried about complications with the Cryptmistress, Heward will wait outside with the head. (And hopefully Awgin)

If Awgin stays, Heward grins, "You were either brave or crazy grabbing the head like that. You are not short of cajones, friend. Don't think I ever would have tried a stunt like that."

"I think Captain Percival will be pleased."

Heward gathers his javelins and stands ready to help anyone who needs help.

Heward watches with some admiration as Awgin readies his impromptu restraint. "Before you do that, break his wings and jaw, just in case. We can't have him screaming or flying away if those don't hold."

He turns to Laya and Calatin, "See to the Tarrigans. We'll need to get them to the temple and then get a statement."

"Nice work," Heward looks down at Cobbers and wonders.

Assuming Mital doesn't escape, Heward stabs it again.

Heward continues to hack at Mital's tentacles and ears.

dagger 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14 ... 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Bodiless Ferengi. I like that.

Heward grabs a handful of tentacles and slashes with his dagger.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 ... 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Seeing Awgin's advantage, Heward spins away from the door and hurries over to help. He draws his dagger on the way. Reaching Awgin, he grabs a hank of tentacles to pull Mital's face upwared and tries to drive the dagger into its eye. The dagger slices along Cobber's cheek leaving a line of blood.

Dagger 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 ... 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Mital's denied dex bonus in the grapple I think, so that ought to hit. Since the damage was low I described the effect as incidental. Looks like my other idea, letting Awgin grapple it to death may come into play.

Heward glances down at the Tarrigans. "Do you have a bow of any kind?

One of the pitfalls of PbP, or rather a lack of taking hard notes. Sorry about the mix up.

Yes, please.

Heward notices the front door hanging open and rushes to close it.

Are there doors into areas B and C and from B to E? Where are the Cobbers? If they've bolted and left the front door open, I'd like to amend Heward's action to closing it.

Heward picks up the javelin.

Somebody's got to give Mital incentive to come down. I'll wing him sooner or later.

Heward reaches back. Three steps forward and he hurls the javelin at Mital. The missile flies high.

Javelin 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 .... damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

OK. Where does the javelin fall and is it or the first one I threw closer?

Improvised javelin AoO 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 3 - 4 = 18 ... damage 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Heward jabs at the varguoille as it swoops. The tip of his javelin opens a small tear in its thin outer wing.

I guess I didn't get a javelin to Awgin yet, nor recover the previously thrown one?

"Give it up, Mital!"

You've got a sling!

Heward clutches his lantern and javelin and follows in the varguoille's wake, waiting for Mital to make his move.

If Heward come across Awgin before Mital, he will call to the halforc and toss him a javelin if he wants it. If Heward reaches the javelin he's already thrown and it's easily retrievable he will slip it back into his quiver.

"We need more light. Calatin, Laya?"

Heward shifts the lantern to his left hand and draws a javelin with his right as he steps forward in pursuit of the fleeing varguoille.

Move to area E. Standard action when I see what I see?

I figure it's Laya's turn, but she readied Gentle Touch against Mital if he comes in reach. Sir Mital's turn?

Do we get to see better with the lantern?

Heward takes a couple steps toward the room with the fighting and sees that the action is taking place in darkness. Thinking quickly*, he returns to the hall to retrieve the lantern and circles back to the left hand room.

Dance around the map, ending at K59. Assuming that picking up the lantern is a free action while on the move.

Heward also snaps out of the paralysis.

"Sir Mital Cobbers. Surrender to the law of Magnimar!"

He reaches for a javelin and hopes that Mital doesn't....

Let's see what unfolds before his turn.

Heward struggles to move. Sir Mital Cobbers or not, this thing is dangerous and needs to be stopped now. One look at his kinswoman is enough to confirm that.

1d20 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 4 = 9

Heward stiffens, paralyzed with fear.

"Thanks, Laya," Heward grunts as he reaches for another javelin and waits for Mital to make his move.

Heward pulls himself off the floor. Crossbows! Maybe I can get Calatin to carry one.

He draws a javelin from the long quiver on his back. He rushes three steps forward and throws.

MOve to J61.

Javelin at Mital 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 .... damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Refelx save? This is going to hurt.

Reflex 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

"Look out!" Heward tries push Awgin against the wall and out of the way of the tumbling statue. The heavy stone hits him and he crashes down the stairs.

My action will be Aid another for Awgin's save. 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18

Get him Dax

Perhaps the Watchman stretches his neck a little further into the firelit room for a better view?

Heward has a quick look in the firelit room before going upstairs.

Completely lost the dot. Thanks for the PM Nazard!

Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20 Sense Motive 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

"I am a Watchman! Put down that sword." Heward doesn't wait for compliance. He tries to help the fellow comply by snaking Brienne between the fellow's legs and tripping him.

CMB for trip attempt 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

That roll probably won't work, but can you throw CMD into opponent's stats, Nazard?

Nazard? For better or for worse it looks like we're going in.

Heward takes a deep breath. "If we've blown it, we've blown it. A little extra property damage won't matter much. Let's get in there."

Awgin wrote:
Awgin doesn't stop working on the door. "Make up your mind already. You want to get in or not?"

"Yeah, I want to get in. I think something's fishy behind that door, but if we're wrong the captain's going to have my head. I wish Cobber would just open up."

A crowd of people huddled in a shrinking pool of sunlight while Mig rants at them....

"Sir, come to the door now! We need to see if you are all right." Heward looks at Awgin. "Count of ten, then we go together."

Aid another to break the door (Strength check) 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

No response to Calatin from inside?

Seeing the gathering crowd, Heward motions for Awgin to stop.

He steps closer to the door and announces. "Sir. It is the Watch! Are you all right? Please come to the door!"

That didn't sound right.

Heward looks at Awgin, lowers his halberd to horizontal and jerks his head toward the door.

I think crashing the door was the right call, Dax.

DAx, is Awgin continuing the assault on the door?

At the cry from inside, Heward frowns thinking of citizen complaints to Percival. We might be in trouble here.

Waiting to see what happens.

Nazard, how far from the Memeorial gardens to the Cobber's McMansion? Is it reasonable that Mital could have flown there before dawn?

"Wait, Awgin! We should make sure the windows and other doors are closed first!"

Just occurred to me that vargie might just fly away if we corner him. We should make sure he's trapped inside before going after him. If he's there at all.

By this post I assert my desire to continue playing with you guys. Glad to be back too.

In the carriage: Heward says, "We should stick together when we get there so we can protect anyone of us who gets frozen. If the vargouille does scream, what do you say to all pretending to be frozen to lure him in?"

At the scene: "Laya's right. Knock first."

The sergeant looks at the rest of the team.

Joana seems set that Khismia's not with us. Phil's +8 is pretty good, but with +4 more he'd be almost a lock to act. Calatin's burning hands could come in handy, if he prepped it. Heward's javelins were unimpressive last time. I nominate Awgin, Phil and either Calatin or Heward.

Heward ponders the question.

Cover the weakest saves or ironclad the strongest? Buffing Phillip, Laya and Calatin would almost guarantee they could act. I'd like Awgin buffed though because he could one-shot one of these things. As an aside, I can't believe I forgot to requisition a crossbow. Heward could forego the buff.
