motteditor, I'm please to see that you've stepped up to take on some of the players for this adventure. I wish all of you the very best gaming! Thanks.

Everyone, I apologize for my absence the last couple of days. Unfortunately, I am the bearer of bad news. Some things have developed in my personal life which are going to leave me without the free time necessary to properly run this game, at least for now. I thought it best to make a quick and honest announcement, rather than leave you all hanging or just disappear.

I'm truly sorry for the disappointment. Maybe I can take another stab at it when things calm down.

Apologies, again. I thank you all and wish you the best.

Heh. So far, from reading the various profiles, I really like Rupert -- too bad it won't be the monocled gentlemen going all swashbuckler on us --, Sigurd -- who can probably relate to my character fairly well, what with the whole father thing going on -- and Treshiell. Always fun to have a blue-blooded Witch with a pet snake around.

Not to say that all the others aren't great as well, I just wanted to express my compliments to those in particular!

Mozi and Shana sounds pretty awesome as well. Master Spy always looked really neat to me, and I've been wanting to see an Alchemist in action.

All I'll say right now is that there are many excellent characters to choose from, so this will be a tough cut. I'll update the list shortly.

If any other prospective Kingmaker DMs are watching, there will be no problem finding good players for a game. :)

So we've got one day before the hammer falls! Any notion of what time we ought to expect the verdict?

Also, what method are you using to determine starting wealth for these 1st level PCs?

The verdict should arrive just about 24 hours from now!

Starting PC wealth will be the average amount, according to class.

Von Doom wrote:
Also, uh. If at all possible and no one minds too much, would it be too much to ask to write dialogue like you would in a novel, rather than all weird and bold like some games here do? It's pretty irritating to me.

That's fine for me, VD. I can do so for NPC dialogue. But, potential players, please know that it's a bit of a non-issue for me personally. I won't insist you do so.

Any idea, H4H, about character starts, if we get selected? Would we begin at first-level? Point buy, I assume*?

(* Am I the only one who likes actually rolling? I love the "heroic" option, 2d6+6, for stats.)

I'm leaning toward a 20 point buy. I have enough fondness for old-school sensibilities to enjoy rolling stats as well, but I think that point buy is a better option for pbp. And, yeah, first level PCs to begin.

Here's the latest rundown of character concepts submitted...

Von Doom, how goes the concept for your magus?

Rupert Hentzau wrote:

Garabbott here. I made an alias for myself because I'd never done it before and thought now might be a good time to learn. I was also bored as hell. Anyway, I have a question about a DM ruling.

The Swashbuckler archetype allows a Rogue to take a single martial weapon proficiency, but I've been planning on using a rapier as my main weapon and therefore will probably blow the martial weapon proficiency on what will be either a longbow or throwing axe (as visible in my background). Would the DM mind if I used it as an exotic weapon proficiency and took the Whip instead? I feel like the whip is an excellent weapon roleplaying-wise for a picaresque character such as mine, and would have its uses in combat too (I plan on eventually doing the whole Combat Expertise route). Then again it might be too overpowered used in this way, in which case I would drop the whip concept and stick to a longbow or throwing axes.

Yeah, I think converting the archetype to allow for a free exotic weapon prof. would be a little bit too much 'bang for the buck.' So I'd have to say no to that, sorry.

Wow, lots of new interest today! Excellent.

I'll post an updated list later this evening.

Everyone, here is where we currently stand with character concepts. Remember, the deadline to have something in for consideration is Wednesday. As others have noted, certain party roles are definitely under-represented. Food for thought for those still considering their options, hmm?

Respectfully, I am withdrawing from consideration. I may have reached my limit for concurrent pbp games. Thanks and good luck to everyone!

I understand, thanks for letting us know. Good luck with your other games!

Von Doom wrote:
I've decided, I'll definitely take the Magus. Proper character concept will be coming up tomorrow, our P&P group decided to start up a surprise game tonight so I'll be busy. x_x

That's fine. Enjoy your game!

For the ease and convenience of all, here is a current tally of potential players, including character concepts (when available).

Don't worry if you have some previous experience with the campaign, that won't exclude you from consideration.

All of the interest is appreciated! Keep the ideas coming.

Von Doom wrote:
Krill and Orin ... would make two rangers now.

Sure, but that assumes I would choose both to participate...which may or may not be the case.

That said, if anyone wishes to propose more than one character concept, I have no problem with that either.

Keep in mind: Kingmaker lends itself very well to rangers, it's true, but a diversity of options is a good thing too. It's a good idea to pay attention to what others have submitted.

motteditor wrote:
I'm interested, since this seems a bit more my speed than the horror game. I'm thinking gnomish alchemist, with the full write-up later tonight, if that works. (Would be willing to play another class too if someone's really been dying to do alchemist.)

That works for me!

Nice background, martinaj! A good read.

martinaj wrote:
Alright. What resources do we have access to? I assume core races, and you mentioned there will likely be a magus. Does this mean that the base classes from the APG are fair game? We shouldn't need much more information than that for now, but it would be handy knowing which classes we can draw from while conceptualizing our characters.

Right you are! Core material is on the table, of course, and the APG as well (with the exception of summoners which I just don't really like). Player material from the Pathfinder Companion product line should be okay too. If there's anything else you're considering, please just ask first.

martinaj wrote:
Reading the Player's Guide right now. Would you like to post our character backgrounds here, or place them on an alias profile?

You can just post them here. No reason to go to the trouble of creating an alias yet, unless you really want to.

Von Doom wrote:

I'll download it when I'm back home, myself.

I think my decision on whether I'll play a Magus will also partially depend on ... the stat setup we get. From what I've seen they're sort of like the monk and need at least a couple of stats at a decent range to ... not suck horribly at what they do. I don't care too much about powergaming, but I do like my characters actually being competent at their chosen profession.

We'll definitely do a point buy; most likely 20 points. So, you should be able to work out a usable ability array.

The official recruiting thread for the Kingmaker campaign is open: HERE. Von Doom is assured a spot (it's his idea, after all). After him, I'll take four others. Best of luck, everyone!

As an extension of this thread(link), I am starting up a new Kingmaker play-by-post campaign. The first spot in the game is reserved for Von Doom, since he is the person who originally came looking for such a game. At this time, it seems likely that he will be playing a magus, though that is subject to change.

We'll need four other players to round out the party, so I'm asking prospective players to submit a well-written character description and background. It need not be lengthy, a paragraph or two will suffice nicely. Please download and read the Kingmaker player's guide (available for free), and use it as inspiration for your background. Also, please note that evil-aligned PCs will not be allowed for this game.

I will hold all positions open until Wednesday December 15th, and then I will announce the other four players.

Thanks, I look forward to reading your character ideas!

martinaj, have you read the Kingmaker player's guide? You can download the PDF for free, so I highly recommend you check it out if you haven't already done so. This will be helpful in letting you know more about the setup for KM.

martinaj wrote:
Cool beans. Just give us a little notice once there are more details about the game (sounds like Kingmaker is likely?) so we can work out a character that suits it.

Will do! I'll create a link here for the official recruiting post once it goes live. And yes, this will be a Kingmaker campaign, so get those ideas flowing! :)

Hero for Hire,

I don't really have any problems with that. Just because I like playing evil doesn't mean I -have- to do so. Playing one of the regular classes wouldn't pose much of a problem, either, though I would have loved to try what so far looks like an extremely interesting mage-fighter hybrid; I'd have to think about which class, though. Possibly something Rogue-y. Or maybe a Sorcerer.

Anyway, I'd love to try. I'll come up with a concept tomorrow, tonight I'm already all booked out with my pen&paper group.

And it's fine, martinaj. It happens.

You know, having thought a bit more about it, I'd be okay with you running a Magus, Von Doom, so long as you're okay with any changes made to the class as further updates come down from Paizo. When all is said and done, I think I'd rather have you play the official version, as opposed to a beta version. But, we can cross that bridge when we come to it.

As for rounding out the party, I think I'd lean towards opening a separate recruiting thread (with all those who have expressed interest here, of course, encouraged to chime in there as well)! I'd be more comfortable choosing players based on a written background, not just on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hello,

I'm considering taking you up on your interest in playing a Kingmaker game! Assuming we can come up with some other interested players, I'd be willing to DM.

I'm like you in many regards, having some experience as player and DM in pbp games on other boards, yet new to this forum. It looks like a thriving pbp game community though! Also like you, I really enjoy games with interesting and well-written characters.

There are a couple of caveats I would have with your original ideas. One is that I am hesitant about playtesting the magus. This is mostly just because the rules aren't official yet, and things could change midstream. Also, I would usually shy away from evil PCs. If you can live with those restrictions, we might have the start of a new game!

What do you think, Von Doom?
