Halgrin stands around feeling useless amidst his more educated friends. He had a decent head for tactics, sure, but book learning wasn't really his thing. He unconsciously shuffles his feet, while he remembers being teased for being "slow" when he was a kid.

He sets the feeling aside and remembers his responsibility to keep these people alive.

"I think we should take a break here and rest up before we move forward. No telling what's in the next room, but we should be ready for it."

A lot of us have class abilities that reset on a short rest. That Mummy took a lot out of us, so we should take the opportunity.

I would love some healing. I'm in pretty rough shape. Currently sitting at HP 23/45.

And probably worth pointing out that I only have one more Rage left for the day. Now, I won't be useless without Rage, but I certainly won't be nearly as effective.

I think I'm finally starting to show the benefit to combining barbarian with fighter. I mean, I took 16 damage, which was reduced to 8. And then gained 6 HP. So all said, my current HP only dropped by 2.

I wonder if Monk would combine well with Barbarian... Need to double check the language on Rage. But I think the trick would be that you had to use unarmed attack with STR and not DEX. It's probably very MAD, though. Still interesting to think about.

Olivia, Enizver, and Halgrin head out into the marketplace. It doesn't take them long to hire a guide, a tall female lizardfolk, especially with the solid pay Halgrin is offering. When Olivia asks, your guide nods "A mule would be ussssseful. But there may be timesssss to leave it behind."

Halgrin nodded at the lizardfolk. Assuming prices were relatively comparable, a mule should be affordable.

"Okay, that sounds manageable. Would you recommend we buy feed for the animal, or would it be able to graze enough in the wild?"

And then Halgrin suddenly turned a little sheepish.

"Oh, sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Halgrin. And these are two of my companions. Enizver, and Olivia."

I didn't. I only sold the treasure. The useful objects I thought were better to keep.

Adamantine Weapons
Adamantine is an ultrahard metal found in meteorites and extraordinary mineral veins. In addition to being used to craft adamantine armor, the metal is also used for weapons.

Melee weapons and ammunition made of or coated with adamantine are unusually effective when used to break objects. Whenever an adamantine weapon or piece of ammunition hits an object, the hit is a critical hit.

The adamantine version of a melee weapon or of ten pieces of ammunition costs 500 gp more than the normal version, whether the weapon or ammunition is made of the metal or coated with it.

I thought about getting an adamantine sword myself, but armor was the bigger priority.

Okay, everyone. Assuming we can sell the loot from the robe, everyone here gets 540 gp.

I think all of the magic items were distributed except for the +1 whip. Is anyone interested?

Halgrin happily digs into the warm meal especially after living off of the miserable fare aboard the ship.

"I've been giving some thought to our situation. I know it is tempting to take off right away, since we have a map. But having a map isn't the same thing as truly knowing an area. I think we should hire a guide, someone who knows the dangers of the jungle. They could tell us what to bring, what to leave behind, navigate us past dangers we couldn't conceive of. Plus, we don't speak any of the local languages.

"I was thinking maybe two gold dragons a day. I know that sounds like a lot, but that's the going rate for a professional in Waterdeep. No idea if it's the same here. But I'd rather overpay and be alive.

"It might add on an extra day. But better a day here safe with a roof over our heads, then a few lost out in the jungle. Besides we'll need some time here to sell that loot we found.

"And, well, I was thinking it was high time I got myself a proper piece of armor," Halgrin said sheepishly while making a point by poking a finger through a bloody slash in his shirt.

Also worth pointing out that none of our characters have had a chance to take a proper bath in literally weeks. There are limits to what prestidigitation can do. ;-)

Halgrin pulls out his badge of office exclaiming him as a Waterdhavian Sword of the Watch, and shows it to the official.

"As a Watchman of Waterdeep, I can attest to the veracity of the words said here. And am willing to do so before a magistrate, and voluntary compulsion of enchantment. Look, I'm not going to pretend to feel any guilt about stealing from a bunch of pirates, but we should hide these things in our packs until after we're ashore. I would rather avoid another fight. Here is the loot so far:

#Loot
• robe of useful items
• +1 shields x2
• staff with a head shaped like a python
• +1 whip

---

The robe of useful items has the following items:
• 20 gems worth 100 gp each
• two pits 10 ft on a side
• spell scroll of fly
• bag of 200 gp
• spell scroll of crusader's mantle
• riding horse with saddle bags
• silver coffer worth 500 gp

---

I would like to lay claim to one of the shields. And I'm going to recommend that we strip the treasure on the Robe and split it in town. That would be 2,700 gp total, or 540 gp for each player.

That is a new suit of armor for Halgrin, and I really wants it. :-)

The staff could be the staff of the python.

Staff of the Python:

Staff, uncommon (requires attunement by a cleric, druid, or warlock)

You can use an action to speak this staff's command word and throw the staff on the ground within 10 feet of you. The staff becomes a giant constrictor snake under your control and acts on its own initiative count. By using a bonus action to speak the command word again, you return the staff to its normal form in a space formerly occupied by the snake.

On your turn, you can mentally command the snake if it is within 60 feet of you and you aren't incapacitated. You decide what action the snake takes and where it moves during its next turn, or you can issue it a general command, such as to attack your enemies or guard a location.

If the snake is reduced to 0 hit points, it dies and reverts to its staff form. The staff then shatters and is destroyed. If the snake reverts to staff form before losing all its hit points, it regains all of them.

That's fine. I was just hoping that they might have forgotten something. In particular, I won't say no to a spyglass or perhaps a hidden compartment.

Also I kind of want to skip ahead so the party can talk in private. And maybe take a short rest.

Halgrin watches the pirate stake his claim, but says nothing. Instead he comforts himself with the knowledge that they were alive. He also resolves to leave a description of the ship with the port authorities.

Assuming that we can make our way into the Captain's quarters, Halgrin will look around for anything they could take as evidence. Ship's log, for example.
