I'm sorry to hear that life has gotten in the way of gaming. There are times when I look back quite fondly to the days of my youth and the all weekend long game session...

The game was a pleasure to participate in, thank you...

Shortsword in hand, Gregolyn moves into a flanking position. Aiming for a vital spot, he then trusts hard into the creature's softer tissue...

I flank the trog, and attack it with my short sword.

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 + 2 = 13

Damage Roll: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Sneak Attack Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2

Seeing no other option, Gregolyn fires another arrow at the lizard-like humanoid...

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 3 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 - 4 = 2

Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Sneak Attack Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Yeah baby! Those dice are loving me...

Gregolyn Curses; "Desna laughs at me once again this day!" He then drops his bow and draws his shortsword...

As a free action, I drop my bow, and then for my move action, I draw my shortsword.

Gregolyn moves into the room, he too circles around the foe in order to get into a position of flanking, but trying to keep some distance from the reptilian humanoid...

All the while, keeping his bow ready...

I move two squares west, then one square north. I fire my bow if the trog moves to attack

Initiative Roll (if needed): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

Attack Roll (when needed): 1d20 + 3 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 3 + 2 - 4 = 8 (the +2 is for my flanking bonus, and the -4 is for firing into a melee)

Damage (when needed): 1d6 ⇒ 1

Sneak Attack Damage (if needed): 1d6 ⇒ 1

Gregolyn curses as his arrow misses! He steadies himself, and fires another arrow at one of the reptilian humanoids...

I fire at whatever one that is not currently engaged in a melee

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5

I'll go ahead and add the "altar sets" to our collected treasure before moving leaving the room.

Gregolyn stops at the door, then quietly readies his bow by nocking an arrow and says in a whisper; "Strange sounding voices behind the door! Perhaps more of those reptile-people, but I don't know... Be ready!

After waiting for his companions to ready themselves, Gregolyn opens the door...

Again, I open the door AFTER my compainions let me know they are ready!

Now, perhaps I'm jumping the gun a bit, but I want to be ready. So if upon opening the door, I see one of those trogs AND I can get a clear shot, I skewer it with an arrow!

Initiative Roll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28

Attack roll: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

Damage roll (if I hit): 1d6 ⇒ 1

I'll check the alter settings

Gregolyn walks over to the northern altar, then to the southern altar as he attempts to assess the values of the settings atop each of them...

Appraise Check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Gregolyn laughs; "As I've said before, gems and jewels are not my strong point!"

He then moves over to the door to the stairwell, and checks to see if it is locked or perhaps trapped...

Perception Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15

"Anyone care to wager that black altar over there holds no end of trouble for us?"

"Anyone??"

Gregolyn just laughs and waits for Anadyr to finish his magical scan of the room...

I of course, relay this information to the rest of the party.

What does history tell us about this "Band of the Phoenix", other than that they were worshipers of Nethys?

Gregolyn, who is certainly no student of religion, does have some minor interest in history however...

He ponders for a moment; "Just who was the last known inhabitant of this tower?"

Knowledge - History Check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Um... Okay... I swear to you, that was NOT the post I replied too! :-)

LOL... You were confusing me with those back and forth updates you were doing... Even made me miss out on a (modified) 23 for my "to hit" :-(

With the skeleton's back to him, Gregolyn sees his opportunity! He strikes at the skeleton with his shortsword...

I attack the skeleton that is attacking Marius

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 11 (That's an additional +2 because of the flank bonus, and a +1 from Anadyr's Inspiration)

Damage Roll (if I hit): 1d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 1 = 8 (Again, the additional +1 is from Anadyr's Inspiration)

Sneak Attack Roll (if I hit): 1d6 ⇒ 5

Safe for the moment, Gregolyn uses the opportunity to steady his nerves by taking a couple of deep breaths...

Once a bit calmer, he puts his tools away, and then draws his shortsword...

I prepare to attack if/when the skeleton in the doorway enters the room

As the door swings open, Gregolyn exclaims; "Desna weeps blood!"

Gregolyn, shaking with fear at the sight of these unholy abominations, scrambles backwards towards the other side of the stairwell...

I take a full move action to get to the spot directly behind Anadyr, opposite Jali...

Initiative Roll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

Gregolyn says; "Yes, well, at least they haven't felt the need to place many traps to enforce that 'sense of privacy'. At least not yet..."

With that, he pulls his tools out and begins to work on the locking mechanism...

(i.e. I try and unlock the door)

Disable Device: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

Gregolyn cautiously moves up the stairs to the next landing. Kneeling down in front of the door, he checks it for traps...

Perception Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

Gregolyn puts his tools away, and stands up. As he does this, he starts to dust himself off, and then stops; chuckling to himself...

"What's the use!? I'm already quite dirty..."

Still smiling to himself, he reaches for the door and says to his companions; "Everybody ready?"

Gregolyn then opens the door...

Gregolyn turns and says to the group; "Well, all seems quite."

He then focuses upon the door again and checks it for any traps he may have missed earlier...

Perception Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

Gregolyn sighs...

"Indeed!"

He moves over to the door and listens...

Peception Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28

Gregolyn, once his tools have been secured, wipes the sweat that had accumulated upon his brow...

He stands and looks to his companions to make sure they are ready, and with a hand upon the hilt of his sword, he carefully opens the door...

What was the trap? Poison dart, hidden blade, what?

Gregolyn having heard no sound coming from the other side of the door; frowns...

With a sigh, he says aloud; "Well, I don't hear anything coming from in there... I'm going to try to disable what I believe to be a trap that has been placed upon the door."

With that, Gregolyn pulls out his set of "special tools", takes a moment to concentrate upon his breathing, and begins disarming the trap...

Disable Device Check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

"Interesting!" Gregolyn mutters softly...

He walks over and kneels down in front of the southern door; "Yes, very interesting...

Gregolyn looks to his companions and say in a low voice; "It would seem, that someone wants to keep us out of the room beyond this here door...

Gregolyn focuses his attention back upon the door again and carefully leans forward and presses his ear against it, listening...

Perception Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27

Gregolyn gestures to the dagger and shield, and says to the group; "These two items appear to be of quality. I have no use for the shield myself, but I'll but in a bid for the dagger."

After saying this, Gregolyn takes the opportunity to get a better look around the room...

Is there nothing in this room save the weapon racks? What of the doors? Anything odd or special about them?

Perception Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

Gregolyn moves into the room, and walks over to the dagger and shield to take a closer look...

He picks up the dagger, then the shield; trying to ascertain their value and significance, if any...

Appraise Check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19

Knowledge Local (Untrained): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

Gregolyn then turns his eyes towards the banner that sits in the corner collecting dust...

Appraise Check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Knowledge Local (Untrained): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Gregolyn winces slightly when Marius hits the lizard-creature; unconsciously rubbing his own head...

He then looks to the now unconscious creature and says; "Yup, you're going to have one killer of a headache when you wake up..." adding; "I should know, I've been there..." under his breath...

Gregolyn stows his shortbow, moves over to the doorway (making sure not to disturb the bard) and looks to the room beyond...

Perception Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

"We may not have the luxury of time upon our side, but we need to know the location of this tunnel the beast spoke of! As for what to do with it, I say, once we have the information we need: Tie it up and leave it here... May not be the most 'humane' thing to do, but we can't drag it around with us!"

Gregolyn looks to Jali and says; "Ask him were this tunnel of theirs is, and where any other of his kind are hiding."

Gregolyn then looks back to the reptilian humanoid, still keeping his bow trained upon it...

Gregolyn listens to Jali's translation and ponders its meaning...

Then snaps to attention at the sound of her raised voice; pulling his bow, nocking an arrow, and pointing it at the pathetic reptilian creature ready at the slightest hint from Jali to put it out of its (and the party's) misery!

I stand there, at the ready. Watching and listening as the drama of the situation unfolds

I was just waiting... :-)

Gregolyn shakes his head in disagreement with Jali...

"I however, would have no problem with ending this pathetic creature's miserable existence!" he says more out of bravado than any real sense of malice...

"But... Perhaps you could persuade our guest to tell us something of this tower and its current residents?" he continues as he looks to Jali with a twinkling in his eyes...

Provided Marius is correct, and these trogs are indeed flat-footed:

Sneak Attack Damage (that is if I hit): 1d6 ⇒ 3

Gregolyn, seeing that his attempt at stealth failed, grumbles; "Desna has certainly been having a good laugh at my expense this day!"

Initiative Roll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

Gregolyn, not letting his bitterness get the best of him, spots an opportunity to attack. He quickly nocks an arrow and shoots at the reptilian figure in front of him. Gregolyn then takes a single step backwards...

I attack the Trog on the right (the one towards the southern wall as I see no numbers on the map), and take a 5-foot step to the north.

Attack Roll (shortbow): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Damage Roll (if I hit): 1d6 ⇒ 5

Gregolyn, who was just about to join Marius in his search of the room, quickly changes modes and silently moves to the door. "Here we go again! he mutters to himself as he does so...

Once there, he inspects the door, then puts his ear up to it and listens intently...

Stealth Check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Perception Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10

Concerned for his companion, Gregolyn calls to Jali; "Are you alright?"

Gregolyn steps into the doorway. "I've had about enough of this walking pair of boots!" Gregolyn says before sending another shaft speeding towards the electrified lizard...

I take a 5-foot step so that I am standing in the doorway.

See my previous post for the pathetic results of my shot…

Concerned for his companion, Gregolyn calls to Jali; "Are you alright?"

"I've had about enough of this walking pair of boots!" Gregolyn says before sending another shaft speeding towards the electrified lizard...

Attack Roll (shortbow): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Damage (if I hit): 1d6 ⇒ 5

D'oh!

Anadyr wrote:
unless I've been playing wrong forever, you can drop your bow (free), draw your weapons (move action), 5'-step (no-action), and attack.... ? The rules seem to indicate you get a 5-footer as long as you don't make any other movement, and drawing a weapon isn't actually movement - even though it's a move-equivalent action... Of course, as I said, I may be wrong, but I've always played thus

But it's more than a five foot step in order to get myself into a flanking position (at least how I am reading the map anyway)...

At any rate, the SRD says:

PF SRD wrote:
If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, you can combine one of these actions with a regular move.

In this case, "one of these actions" is drawing a weapon. Since I possess a BAB of +0, then I take that to mean I cannot move and then draw my sword, much less attack with it...

But of course if Organized has a different interpretation, I'll go with that...

The sight of the lizard shocking Anadyr was something Gregolyn had never seen before, and he was quite frankly, un-nerved by the event...

Upon hearing Marius's words however, Gregolyn snaps out of his stupor and nods to him, saying; "I'm on it!"

Gregolyn then moves to the spot where Marius had pointed in order to flank the creature...

I don't have a +1 to my BAB so I cannot draw my sword AND move in the same round. I am still holding my shortbow, so if possible after I move into position, I would like to fire at the lizard at point blank range if I can do so without hitting Jali...

So if I can, I'll nock an arrow BEFORE I move so as not to provoke an AOO...

Attack Roll (shortbow): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

Damage (if I hit): 1d6 ⇒ 3

Sneak Attack Damage (if applicable): 1d6 ⇒ 6

If not, after I move I'll just wait until next round before doing anything else…

Initiative Roll: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15

Gregolyn upon seeing the lizard, mutter; "This tower is just full of surprises!"

He raises his bow, at shoots the lizard...

Attack Roll (shortbow): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Damage (if I hit): 1d6 ⇒ 4

Gregolyn, puts away the deck of cards, and stands. As he does so, he says; [b]"Perhaps I should check the door for traps?"[b]

He then moves cautiously over to the door and examines it...

Perception Check: 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 + 1 = 9 (If I read it right, I get an additional +1 when I use Perception to find traps)

Apparently, it doesn't matter!

Provided the door isn't trapped, and I didn't blow myself up...

Cursing to himself, Gregolyn stands back and readies his shortbow...

Once Gregolyn is on the second floor, he moves to a spot in-between the two doors and sits down, his back upon the wall...

Sighing heavily, he says (though more to himself than anyone in particular); "Small wonder this entire tower did not come crumbling down upon my head when I first entered. Desna laughs indeed!"

He pulls a deck of cards from a belt pouch and begins to mindlessly shuffle them as he watches his companions in silence...

I am paying attention to what and who is around me, I'm just sulking at my misfortune and contemplating what to do next...

Granted, I am not as close to the northern door as Anadyr, but do I hear this "scratching" (considering I am right up against the wall)?

Perception Check: 1d1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23

Gregolyn watches as Jali climbs the rope, looking for any sign of it giving way...

Satisfied, he moves over to the rope and begins to climb...

"May Desna smile upon me!"

Climb Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

In the immortal words of Pinky: Narf!

Provided I don't fall and kill myself, I try again!

Climb Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Wow, just wow!

Gregolyn, more than a little embarrassed, tries to regain his composure and dusts himself off...

"Well, THAT could have gone better!"

He turns to Anadyr; "You care to give it a shot?" he says as he offers the bard Jali's knotted rope...

Gregolyn takes the rope from Jali and thanks her with a nod of his head...

He then adjusts the coils, and secures the rope around his shoulder and head...

Gregolyn moves to the foot of the wall under an opening in the tower's second floor and looks straight up.

He swallows his trepidation and focuses while he locates a suitable holds for his hands and feet...

In silence, Gregolyn begins to climb...

Climb Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Gee I hope that DC is low! ;-P

Gregolyn shows the copper penny to his companion to assure him that it is not some trick double-sided coin, and then flicks it into the air. He catches the coin as it falls, and quickly slaps it onto his left forearm and removes his hand to reveal it...

1d2 ⇒ 2

Seeing that the coin's reverse side is facing up, Gregolyn says; "Desna laughs! Lucky me..."

Gregolyn waits for Jali to finish knotting her length of rope...

With his attention upon Anadyr, Gregolyn says; "You are correct. That overgrown arachnid did put a slight damper upon my style! Still, I do not think it should adversely affect a climb such as this too much..."

Gregolyn pauses to think for a moment, and then pulls a single copper coin from his pouch and says; "Tell you what, I'll toss this coin, and you call it. Whoever wins makes the climb! Fair?"

Thanks for the reminder, my (now) modified Climb is +5 due to the loss of STR...

The "coin toss" can be the rolling of a "d2" with 1=heads and 2=tails if that's okay with you.

Gregolyn too surveys the wall, to better assess how climbable it is...

Gregolyn figures that the wall is indeed an easy climb. He then turns to the group and speaks; "This is no mere fence Anadyr! I have fractured a law or two in my time. I may not be proud of it, but I know how to play the part of the second-story man. I think it would be best if I attempted the climb."

My Climb Skill is +6

"But it is not my wish to step on any toes, so if you really want to..." Gregolyn says to Anadyr with a smile...

Gregolyn, a bit disappointed that the stairs were blocked, says; "Perhaps we missed something! Or perhaps, there is something of note in that area to the south..."

He moves over to the southern archway and looks into the rubble-strewn room beyond...

Is it possible to enter this area? Does it look safe?

Knowledge (engineering) Check (untrained): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

I look for anything that stands out in the room beyond the southern arch.

Perception Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26

Gregolyn too is noticeably relieved to find the door untrapped...

"This door probably leads to a set of stairs. I'd be willing to bet a few gold that it leads both up AND down... Ready yourselves!"

Unless somebody wishes to do something else...

And if someone else wishes to something before I open the door, I'll wait to perform my action below. If not, I proceed...

Gregolyn, nervously unsheathes his shortsword, and pulls the door open...

Once the door is open, I take a 5-foot step back and away from the door, shortsword at the ready!

Knowledge (Engineering) Check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

Gregolyn, confident that the new chamber holds no threat, calls to his companions to enter...

"It is safe, though watch your step. That area over yonder does not look stable..."] He says while pointing to the caved in area to the south.

Gregolyn looks closely at the door to the east...

What's the door made of? What are its dimensions? Does it have an obvious locking mechanism? Would one push or pull it to open? And anything else you can tell me about this door.

Perception Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24

Also, as an aside, does this tower look like it has an intact 2nd (upper) floor?

Oop! Posted out of character... Knew it was bound to happen sooner or later...
