For much of his life, only "truth" he knew is that his mother Iliyana Vitallain, a member of one of minor noble Chelaxian families in Westcrown, was tricked in a way, probably through magical means by his father, a true bastard of an elf. He seduced her and charmed her in such a way that not only she has become pregnant with that trickster, but she has even dared to start questioning the established order. Of course, she disappeared soon after in one of many not-so-secret pogroms organized by the Inquisition and Hellknights. Bryce was an unwanted, illegitimate child and it was not long before he wound up in an orphanage. Soon after turning sixteen, he was "conscripted" as a young recruit for Chelaxian army. Both his childhood and his teenage years were full of hardship and stern discipline, but young Bryce endured. He was a rather smart and able, and those traits enabled his slow progress within the ranks of Chelaxian army. With 22 he was already a sergeant, and as a recognition of his worth, he was transferred to Hellknights. There Bryce met a girl named Pontia Runario - a mixture of Chelaxian, Taldan and Varisian, with somewhat darker skin than is usually seen in the Chelish heartland. The Varisian part of her heritage was shown in her wavy black hair and her generous smile. The two of them were assigned with others within a team of enforcers, and soon enough they developed mutual attraction, despite their different natures. They worked very good together, with Bryce providing the smarts, to Pontia's muscle - she was a slightly heavyset and physically powerful woman. It was during one of their actions - a tip off led them on a raid to a suspected Bellflower "barn". It seemed that they were seen while approaching, since when they burst in there was no one to be found on the premises. But the raid was not a total failure, since they have discovered several scrolls and papyrus with various information. While searching through the papers, Bryce saw a familiar name in one of the notebooks - the name of his mother! Acting on a whim, he glanced quickly around and managed to pocket the book without anyone seeing him. Later, when he was finally alone he examined the notebook in detail. It was actually a diary of a sorts of one of the "tillers" - a person working for the secretive Bellflower network, one whose role was to escort slaves between their secret hideouts. Without informing anyone, he kept studying the book, looking for additional clues to start his personal investigation. He was lucky (and good), and after a while he discovered and came in contact with one of Bellflower informants. After a lots of negotiations, threats and bribes, he managed to uncover "the real story" (a story which he deemed as more realistic at least than the one he was told). His father, whose real name was Lanliss was posing as a merchant while secretly working for Bellflower network. He was successful and remain undetected for several years, until he met Iliyana, Bryce's mother. They fell in love with each other, and for reasons unknown (probably his caution loosened a bit due to love), Inquisition was able to track him and uncover his identity. They burst in his hideout but they were not prepared for the magical arsenal he had at his disposal. An accomplished elven mage, with variety of magical items at his disposal, Lanliss was able to (barely) defeat his attackers before running away. After his daring escape, Inquisition in an attempt to cover up their blunder, arrested Iliyana, as well as all other involved, and quickly "dealt with them". They fabricated a story wherein all involved were either killed or dealt with, hoping that Lanliss, once he learned that both Iliyana and all connected to her (including the kid) were dead, will not have a reason to return to Westcrown and complicate their lives further. He joined the Mendev crusades soon thereafter, trying to forget the events that transpired and find a new meaning to his life. Returning back to his barracks from that fateful meeting, Bryce was confronted by Pontio. Being close to him she was able to deduct that something was not right, and she began stalking him. Sure he was good enough, so usually she was not able to follow him everywhere, but from what little she found out she understood that he was "in over his head". She tried to talk him into confessing everything to their superiors, and when that failed she simply threatened him, being physically stronger than him. Bryce understood that Pontio could overpower him easily, so he did what he did best. He lied to her, tricked her into believing that he will surrender and then jumped on her using the element of surprise. He knocked her unconscious, quickly gathered all of his possessions (plus his platoon's cash-box) and run away into the night. Months later, he finally reached Mendev. Now, probably a wanted criminal, a deserter from Chelaxian army he spent what little money he had left on trying to locate his father Lanliss. His father who did not even knew he had a son. Finally a local minstrel told him of an adventuring band having one elven wizard Lanliss, and that the mentioned adventurers went missing in a dungeon some time ago. His path was clear - all he had to do was find that dungeon...and maybe some company. 15 Point Buy:
