Not sure if Gerbault's up again, but I think he is. Assuming that the devil is now in melee range, Gerbault pops a spring-loaded dagger into his left hand and makes a full attack. Rapier: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
(Note: weapons are masterwork, not magic, if it affects DR)

Well, that's quite... troubling. "Ack!" Gerbault shouts in surprise. Since she's too high for him to hit with a melee attack, he uses the surprise round to quaff a potion (Shield), and the air around him shimmers. AC now 26 On his initiative, he runs down the bridge, attempting to jump high enough to get a single stab in against the creature. To hit: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28

"So you think the beast was created to do evil, but failed to do what his 'father' wanted? That's a troubling... accusation, but it gives us good reason to find the thing." And, more quietly, Gerbault adds, "What if he has a smell? Can I comment on the smell?"
M "Halfling" (Goblin) Investigator 5 (Empiricist, Steel Hound) / Swashbuckler 1 (Inspired Blade)
"That... plan makes sense, yes. Although I only know the Professor from... umm... lectures, yes." Craft (alchemy) to identify if the explosion was alchemical or magical: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 Gerbault auto-succeeds the Perception and Acrobatics checks. "There's a spell-stick in the rubble," he points out, and grabs the wand.
"West, then? Should I tie a rope somewhere?"
M "Halfling" (Goblin) Investigator 5 (Empiricist, Steel Hound) / Swashbuckler 1 (Inspired Blade)
"Hold on. free the beast?" "And you misunderstand. We were sent by the Judge; and we're here to handle this. Since you seem to know the layout of the place, assistance you can give us if you want." Andjela? Cedric? I'm improvising a bit here, since I don't know the full story, but I'll wait to let you two far more charismatic and imposing people get some words in edgewise.

Ah, I always get those two class names confused. Atheish was intentional, the rest weren't. (Can you really be an Atheist in a world with such active gods? Gerbault just doesn't know most of their names, etc., or what exactly they do)

"Oh? Would you prefer to send a scholar or a preacher to deal with matters of public safety? I am not from Ustalav of birth, so maybe your ways here are less straightforward." "And I'll have you know that this one is the University of Lepidstadt's greatest duelist, though my companions have credentials too if you're going to be picky." (and as far as I've actually seen, investigators are one of the most melee-focused classes in pathfinder) "So... you say someone's filled this castle with monsters? Point the way, and we'll go enforce at them."

Here's a link from that thread, Evangeline, which I think follows the case I was trying to make—you can "worship" a deity who's not LG/NG/LN, but if your alignment is more than one step away from them, you're not actually worshipping that deity, just paying them lip service. Because Paladins don't get their spells from a higher power, they can do this—they're just effectively committing blasphemy in the eyes of anyone who legitimately worships that deity (and you're not a member of a paladin order devoted to them, because there are no such orders). Darien: you picked the Falchion because some paladin guide suggested it, most likely. It's got a better crit range, which is useful when you're much higher level and having a keen weapon with a 15-20 crit range means your smites go a lot farther... but right now, it's not that important, and you can just get a new weapon later. Here is a historical image and another one of a actual historical paladins, for the luls.

Hmm, where is that text in the Paladin class? It seems right, I just can't actually find it now that I'm looking for it, except for Paladins who do Variant Channeling. ALso, I forgot to list my belt of Str/Dex +2... but it looks like I messed up and started with a 22 point spread, so I'm fixing that now.

Oh, and: Desna's favored weapon is the starknife. Erastil might be most appropriate, as the LG god of honorable hunting, and his weapon is the longbow—though his religion is rare in Ustalav. Also: A heavy repeating crossbow has lower damage per round than a longbow at any level, provided you have at least Str. And you can't actually use an oversized heavy bow without laying it on a support like a ballista. If you swapped out your weapon focus for Dervish Dance, and your elven blade for a scimitar (or Point Blank Shot, but bear with me here), you'd be able to deal 1d6+5 damage per hit (avg 8.5), which is more than your current 1d10+2 (avg 7.5), and you'd be perfectly set up to select Sarenrae as a religion instead. But if you want to focus on ranged combat, Rapid Shot is incredibly useful—and if you change up Weapon Finesse (since by level 6, no ranged-focused character ever has reason to actually use a melee weapon instead of just holding it menacingly), you'd be able to get 4! attacks per round, which would make smiting a whole lot more fun.

Oh, I misread that as "to Iomedae, from Desna," hmm. I don't believe Paladins have a deity restriction the way Clerics/Inquisitors/Warpriests do. But they do have to be LN, which puts you quite a bit at odds with the teachings of Desna. Darien Cedric Espoir wrote: If you wish for a fairly accurate image of Darien, I have one in his profile. Not too accurate—that looks like highly piecemeal armor, he's got the wrong type of sword, and the haircut screams "1990s"
M "Halfling" (Goblin) Investigator 5 (Empiricist, Steel Hound) / Swashbuckler 1 (Inspired Blade)
The halfling shakes his head quickly, remembering how Paladins can be a little... wooden about such things. "Ah. My apologies. Gerbault Swift-Blade, here with two large paladins, Sir Darien Cedric Espoir and Sir Andjela Daywalker. They make arrests, I collect clues, law enforcement, et cetera. We are on the orders of Judge Darmid, sent with concern over her brother-in-the-law. Strange, criminal things are afoot, you know. We're all quite good at swords, so if there are still monsters about you can stand back if you like while we protect you on behalf of civic justice and your tax coins at work."
M "Halfling" (Goblin) Investigator 5 (Empiricist, Steel Hound) / Swashbuckler 1 (Inspired Blade)
Ah, thought things were still in the middle of combat. "Yep!" shouts the large (for his race), caped halfling that follows behind them, "We're here for! Err, wait, I don't have this. Andjela, maybe you should explain."
M "Halfling" (Goblin) Investigator 5 (Empiricist, Steel Hound) / Swashbuckler 1 (Inspired Blade)
Well, we'll be here when the story gets to us. And Andjela: I will I figure Gerbault being a Goblin is also not common knowledge, but he's fine keeping that a secret until the first time someone casts Detect Thoughts or True Seeing—Goblins are NOT well-loved, but with a party this monstrous they might not outright murder him. Until then he'll just be a very... excitable fellow, with an unusual love for fire. Also, Iomedae does make a lot more sense, cool. |
