It was amoung the small talk that a knock at the door was heard.

Kendra rose to her feet "One moment, that must be councilman Hearthmount here to read the will please remain seated I will invite him in."

Kendra moves through the cluttered room with ease and to the observer perhaps with a more cheerful step than when the party had first arrived at her home. The party hears Kendra open the door and issue a greeting to the guest though you cannot make out the specific words being said. the front door then closes and returning is now two pairs of footsteps instead of one.

It is clear to anyone by his mannerisms that he does not appreciate outsiders meddling in what he considers town affairs but he is a man of business so he keeps that opinion off his lips. The business at hand is the will of Professor Petros Lorrimor.

Kendra takes the councilman to a desk in one corner of the room and gives him a seat "Please my friends gather round and listen. even I am not certain what is in the will as my father wanted it read when all of you were present. Please councilman you may begin"

The councilman produces a scroll case from the bag he brought with him. All can see that the professors wax seal is unbroken just moments before the councilman himself breaks the seal. As he breaks the seal a key falls out and noisily clatters to the table. undaunted by the key the councilman continues clearly looking to conclude this and return home.

The date on the will is only a month or so ago, it seems Petros felt he had reason to make sure he had his lifes things in order for one reason or another.

The councilman reads the will aloud "I, Petros Lorrimor, being of sound mind, do hereby commit to this parchment my last will and testament. Let it be know that, with the exception of the specific details below, i leave my home and personal belongings entire to my daughter Kendra. Use them or sell them as you see fit my child.
Yet beyond the bequeathing of my personal effects, this document must serve other needs. I have arranged for the reading of this document to be delayed untill all principals can be in attendance, for i have more than mere inheritance to apportion. I have two final favors to ask.

To my old friends, I hate to impose upon you all, but there are few others who are capable of appreciating the true significance of what it is I have to ask. As some of you know, I have devoted many of my studies to all manner of evil, that I might know the enemy and inform those better positioned to stand against it. For knowledge of one’s enemy is the surest path to victory over its plans.

And so, over the course of my lifetime, I have seen fit to acquire a significant collection of valuable but dangerous tomes, any one of which in the wrong circumstances could have led to an awkward legal situation. While the majority of these tomes remain safe under lock and key at the Lepidstadt University, I fear that a few I have borrowed remain in a trunk in my Ravengro home. While invaluable for my work in life, in death, I would prefer not to burden my daughter with the darker side of my profession, or worse still, the danger of possessing these tomes herself. As such, I am entrusting my chest of tomes to you, posthumously. I ask that you please deliver the collection to my colleagues at the University of Lepidstadt, who will put them to good use for the betterment of the cause.

Yet before you leave for Lepidstadt, there is the matter of another favor—please delay your journey one month and spend that period of time here in Ravengro to ensure that my daughter is safe and sound. She has no one to count on now that I am gone, and if you would aid her in setting things in order for whatever she desires over the course of this month, you would have my eternal gratitude. From my savings, I have also willed to each of you a sum of one hundred platinum coins. For safekeeping, I have left these funds with Embreth Daramid, one of my most trusted friends in Lepidstadt—she has been instructed to issue this payment upon
the safe delivery of the borrowed tomes no sooner than one month after the date of the reading of this will.

“I, Petros Lorrimor, hereby sign this will in Ravengro on this first day of Calistril, in the year 4955.”

Upon finishing the reading the councilman looks to Kendra looking for any questions. she politly says "Thank you councilman, Looks like my friends will be staying a bit longer. I have no questions please get back to your affairs and enjoy the rest of your day."

With his job done the councilman takes his leave and you hear the door close on his way out.

Kendra lets out a deep breath and looks around the room but isnt looking at the books but more thinking about what to do. "My friends i know not weather i yet want to sell this house or remail but i do have plenty of room to keep you all comfortably, should you choose to remain as my father requested. I will not force you to stay but i would be glad for the company. Please stay here and i will fetch that chest of books my father spoke of in the will, i will return shortly"

And with that Kendra leaves the room.

long one there guys i know, kendra will be a moment i wanted to let you guys digest that and talk amoung yourselves for a short moment then ill continue

Kendra nods as Samdi answers the simple question she asked. She replied "Father had many friends in life from many different places of the world. I take pride in knowing a great many of them as well as they all remember my father fondly. even the hired hands!" she says as she turns to Wallace

"Wallace was one of them. Tell me Wallace, how was your last bounty? my father told me that you would do bounty hunting when not working as a guard or tracker or whatnot. My messenger says he was only able to find you as you turned up at a jail house looking to turn over a captive."

"Did the funeral pull you away from work?" Kendra asked, trying to learn what she could of a man that her father had called on once or twice when he the need arose

Drinks were fetched and the group moved to the sitting room, if it could really be called that. There are piles of books all over the room. Some are ear marked, others with bookmarks hanging between the pages and all are piled as high as your average old man.

Kendra motions to the few open spots on couches and chairs and motions people to sit. "Sorry for the mess my friends, when my father gets his mind on something as I'm sure you know he doesn't let it go. I'll need to tidy the house but that can wait till another time. Please enjoy your drinks."

As the party sits Kendra turns to Samdi and asks "I know for example that my father was facinated with your people Samdi, the Samsaran you told him they were called. He told me your on a constant quest for enlightenment to reach the next life. I want to ask how goes your quest, are you any closer to that what you seek?"

With the speeches concluded the ceremony came to an end and the last resting place of Professor Petros Lorimor was this small plot of land mostly unremarkable amoung many others like it. After the casket was lowered into place and the congregation of mourners disseminated back towards the town and the gravedigger filled in the plot Kendra approached the party seeming to be in a decent mood despite the interuption to the service earlier.

She began with only a small waver in her voice "Well then let us be getting back to my fathers.... my house. There i can offer you all something to drink and we can await the Counsellor Hearthmount, he will be taking care of the reading of the will, while he was at the funeral the counsellor tells me he has a thing or two to do and will be about an hour before he arrives to do the reading. I'd be more than happy to provide hospice till then" With that she turns towards her home and beckons the party to follow

The walk isnt long and the party arrives at a modest home on the southern end of the town. Inside they find themselves surrounded by stacks upon stacks of books of all kinds, all likely to do with the professors current and past studies. Enteating the party to have a seat amoung the piles on the couches of the living room Kendra simply asks "Will tea do for everyone? or would any of you rather something else? my father kept a bottle or two of wine or rum around the house im sure."

party has time to post something talk about the house, ill move this on if no one wants to post in a day or two

And the party once again takes up its grave task and carries the casket to its resting place.

The actual burial is what one would expect, with the good Father saying the good that the professor did in his life and that he is now in Pharasma's hands to be judged and sent to his final destination. Kendra's speech was of course a tad more emotional and filled with metions of her memories with her father and how he will be missed

In closing Kendra adresses the group that gathered today to pay their final respects "If any of you have any words they would like to say about my father id be glad to hear them, my father had many friends near and far and im sure we can all become closer to him to hear those stories"

Stabilize: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (12) - 2 = 10

And with the 5th man to fall or flee the final villager looses his nerve and retreats to the safety of the mob. As the fight seems to be coming to an end Kendra hears the rush of running feet and everyone sees an old man in robes rushing towards the party.

Kendra exclaims "Father Grimburrow, thank the gods your here! these men are trying to steal my fathers casket! they are saying they arnt going to let me bury my father here!"

Grimburrow's brow furls even further than it has been since he crested the hill, seeing there are injured here he first uses his holy powers to heal those strewn on the ground and the party alike.

Channel positive energy: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4, 6) = 18

with everyone in good health he then turns to the mob and in an agry tone shouts at them "Gibs Id recomend you take you and yours and get yourself gone from here, you will be reported to the sheriff for this so dont go causing any more trouble. Kendra and her father have every right to be here and you are not going to stop this funeral!"

With half the men fearing the party and the other half cowing from the Father's scolding they pick up their fallen comrades and leave with out further hassle.

With the matter dealt with the Father turns to the party and a good look can finally be made of him. He is an older man, his hair compleatly lost to the ravages of age and what remains is white as snow. the most striking thing about him though is his still bright blew eyes showing that while he is aged he still has his wits about him. "I am sorry you had to experience that today of all days Kendra, let us take up your fathers casket and be done with these events shall we?

"I could not agree more, let us go my friends not far now to the grave site, please take my father just a bit further" Kendra says to the party as she motions over the hill

The blow the villager took from samdi forces the villager to loose all of the remaining resolve he had and he too flees from the fight

Stabilize: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14

Villager 6 stabilizes

the remaining villagers visibly look shaken and look like they are nearing their limit but arnt quite done with their assault as the party also looks to be close to being finished so they hope that with a little luck they may still succeed.

Stabilize: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (2) - 3 = -1

Stabilize: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (4) - 3 = 1

but both their attacks miss their marks with little effort of the party

End of round 2

with two of his friends down and bleeding and himself having taken a blow from magics he feels to be unholy in nature one of the villagers flees from this battle to the perceived safty of the rest of the mob

Stabilize: 1d20 - 5 ⇒ (15) - 5 = 10

villager 3 successfully stabilizes, and villager 4 uses a full round withdraw action

Fort save villager 4: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

the negative energy of Samdi's touch flows through the villager, visibly harming him as his face contorts in pain but it seems the rugged life lived here in a farming town has granted him the fortitude to fight off any other effects of the energies which racked his body.

attack villager 2: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (10) - 3 = 7

still standing their ground for the moment another villager swings at Wallace, this time luck not on his side as his blow glances harmlessly away now that Wallace has his wits, and his defences about him.

this will be villagers 5 and 1

seeing their friends land a couple blows on one of the party ther villagers still think they have a chance to win this fight and press the attack, focusing this time though on the woman who put a morning star into there friends chest, she looks to be a threat and they are worried about that and they also know that in flanking their opponent they will have an easier time hitting her

1d20 - 3 + 2 ⇒ (19) - 3 + 2 = 18

1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

1d20 - 3 + 2 ⇒ (11) - 3 + 2 = 10

even with the pincer attack only one blow lands though it is a strong one and she looks like that one hurt a bit but she is still firmly on her feet looking to fight.

End of round 1

as Wallace turns to try and trip their friend his awkward motions leave him open to the villagers assault and they take full advantage

1d20 - 3 ⇒ (20) - 3 = 17

1d20 - 3 ⇒ (3) - 3 = 0

1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

the first swing connects and again stings Wallace but doesnt take him down yet

1d20 - 3 ⇒ (20) - 3 = 17

1d20 - 3 ⇒ (11) - 3 = 8

1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

a second blow connects again stinging wallace but he still stands though perhaps he isnt feeling the greatest at the moment

1d20 - 3 ⇒ (19) - 3 = 16

and the final attack goes in against him but this time wallace takes the attacks more seriously and blocks the attack.

and like that two of the men are down, but the remaining villagers dont give up quite yet and in fact one of them steps up to follow Samdi, knowing that he can cast magics and magic can be dangerous if left unchecked. the villager swings the tool he has in hand and...

1d20 - 3 ⇒ (2) - 3 = -1

it wiffs, Samdi barely having to employ any of his defensive skills to avoid the hit.

with the events of the past few seconds the other farmers are certainly starting to look like this might have been a bad idea but they arnt ready to throw in the towel yet

As Samdi prepares to cast his spell the villager next to him swings to stop the caster from getting his spells to bear

attack of opp: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (19) - 3 = 16

damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

concentration: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

the villager successfully bats at Samdi's hands muttling the spell and dissipating its power before.

the next villager swings his tool in had at the nearest of the party, that being Wallace

villager 2 attack: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (18) - 3 = 15

damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

the blow lands on Wallace with no real force but it does sting and will likely leave a bruise in the morning

ok initiative order is

ben,villager 2, addy, ted, villager 3, 4, kyle, villager 6, 5, and 1

ben i gave you control of your character on roll20, so if you wanna do your stuff and post whatever it is you do we can get this combat rolling. ted and addy you both need to log into the game, if the link abouve doesnt work let me know in skype

ill roll their initiative but they are all acting on the suprise round as i said so none of them will be flat footed

initiative: 6d20 ⇒ (2, 16, 12, 9, 5, 8) = 52

The game is live on roll20 at the link below, the villagers use their supprise round to surround the party as they set down the casket, once i have initiative from people i will get the ball rolling

Roll20 Game

so i assume ben tried to diplomacy check, and as seen below that fails due to the rest of the party preping to put down the casket im going to give the assailants a surprise round as you guys are doing that then the first round will proceed as normal. please roll initiative

Diplomacy: 1d20 ⇒ 5

Kendra's argument falls on deaf ears and Samdi's does about the same.

Gib's shouts "Ain't none o' your business outsider like i said we ain't lettin' this man be buried with our kin. now we dont want to hurt no one but we are going to stop you."

with the final words Gib's knods to the rest of the group and a half dozen of them approach the procession with their farm tools raised

Sense motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Calista can sense that there is no blood thirst on these mens mind but they mean business.

The party having thought this might be where this confrontation lead imidiatly began putting down the casket while the men closed in on them and as they do so Kendra crys "Please dont kill anyone, they are fools but not bad men!" and with that the men were upon them.

Seeing everything was prepared Kendra motions up the hill into the graveyard "Father Grimburrow waits for us just over the hill in the cemetery, he came by early with the gravediggers to prepare the plot. Let us not keep him waiting. Follow me my friends!" She says the last few words with conviction raising her voice so the other attendees of the funeral can hear her and they perk up and get in line behind the casket.

The procession quietly follows Kendra and the casket bearers up the hill on the path in the cemetery. As the procession rounded the corner of the path known as the Dreamwake and turning onto the Eversleep you can see the path is blocked by a group of a dozen surly locals. When they notice the procession the tallest man among them speaks out "That's far enough. We been talking, and we don't want Lorrimor buried in the Restlands. You can take him upriver, but he ain't goin' in the ground here!"

Kendra is swift to respond "What are you talking about! she cries out. "I arranged it with Father Grimburrow. He's waiting for us! The grave's already been..."

"You don't get it, woman. We won't have a necromancer buried in the same place as our kin. I suggest you move out while you still can. Folks are pretty upset about this right now."

"Necromancer!? Are you really that ignorant?"

This blue text is out of character talk so you all know, this whole scene is intended like many things to be done in real time like DnD is supposed to be and doesnt translate 100% to play by post, feel free to state any action you want to do while the discussion is taking place and we can work it out, so you know carrying the casket takes up both of your hands in case you want to know that

Kendra's face seems to lose its downtrodden expression for a brief moment as she hears the voices of these old friends of her father's again. but its only gone for a moment then she turns her mind back to the matter at hand as the other guests are waiting and she knows that they will have other things to get to in their day so she must press on with the funeral.

"So i know the letter told you all that there is a matter of my fathers will to be dealt with but that is to be done later today after we have interred his body is the Restlands, that's the name of the graveyard here in Ravengro." she motions to the graveyard who's gates the procession is waiting at "I find we are in need of pall bearers, and I can think of no one better than you all here, would you be so kind as to carry my dear father to his final resting place?" Kendra knows that her fathers friends here are more than strong enough to carry the coffin and truthfully they are in better physical shape than many of those waiting in the procession.

The dark overcast skies that sit low overhead seem to speak to the deeds that are to be done today. Kendra, the daughter of the late Professor Lorrimor, stands over the casket with the visible sadness anyone would expect to be on her face given the circumstances. Others who knew her father stand slightly off the side talking among themselves all looking rather sombre as well waiting for the events to proceed. They are all waiting on the final four guests to the funeral to arrive and it seems they will not be waiting much longer as the final stranglers make their way from town clearly having enjoyed the hospitality of the city's inn.

Kendra weakly smiles and looks to the new arrivals saying "Welcome old friends, its good to see you received the invitations, I was worried the couriers may not have been able to find you, how was your journeys?"

opening discussion thread
