Thanks for the response Tinalles, a lot to think about there. Honestly, the group was so excited to be able to help the cleric find a new deity that they began scouring material to find one that was appropriate.

They have already discussed procuring a copy of The Logic of Design and other means of trying to assist her so I didn't want to stop them from trying.

Looking into the room with Death Watch activated, there are no signs of living creatures, undead creatures or creatures who are neither alive nor undead. The lockers fill the room, as previously described.

The door opens silently, clearly indicating regular maintenance.

The circular room beyond is filled with storage lockers. The walls of the room are formed of lockers 5 high and circling from the door right around the room to the door again. Two rows of lockers double sided, 6 deep and 5 high form corridors within. There is no sign of conflict here.

These outages are more than slightly annoying haha

We'll just try and keep up where we can.

Ash:

Standing closer to the depository, you notice that the faint green glow is evident inside as well as out. You remember one of your lessons on defenses against teleportation, which indicated a green shimmer is a telltale sign of a dimensional travel barring effect.

I thought it was my laptop/browser - tried many uninstall/reinstalls/clearing cache/resyncing etc...

They use the rope ladder to climb to the top for a sentry. The building itself is fairly high security, no windows, no extra doors.

As Sobrian creeps over to the door, he notices that the lock has scratch marks consistent with someone trying to pick the lock.

The door opens silently, as though recently oiled and beyond there is a circular corridor in which are signs of battle, some light sprays of blood against walls and scraps of cloth lie on the ground.

Following the corridor to the left leads to a dead end with a door on the right, following it to the right leads to the corridor becoming a stairwell leading up.

Perception DC 20:

There are sounds of light footsteps coming from the level above.

Is anybody else facing the repeated sign outs?

There is no entrance at the top, just the door on the ground floor

"Thank you," Torrent sighs, looking at Barrack. "We can definitely go by the college, but I think we should investigate the depository."

Let me know who plans on opening the door.

Beauregarde can copy spells from the spellbook to his formula book provided they are on the alchemist list.

"We need to check, the information that Rivereye claimed he had was worth the risk. You need to believe me"

Ash recognises the telltale signs of Shahalesti fletching at the ends of the arrows, which would suggest elven rather than mercenary involvement.

Sorry Kiana, the only way you could see that was because you were flying up. You would have been the one to find her. The arrows have entered at between a 15 and 60 degree angle, indicating that the shots came from below.

Ash, you identify the wand as a Wand of Magic Missile, Caster Level 3 with 12 charges remaining. The amulet appears to have a faint lingering aura of magic, which you identify as that of an Arcane Bond losing its magic.

Torrent regards the amulet, "It doesn't appear to have any real significance. Maybe someone at Gabal's College may know?"

The Depository has only a single entrance on the ground floor and very faintly glows with a greenish hue. At the top of the tower, a rope ladder has been hauled up and there is a dead woman lying there, her body pierced with arrows. She appears to have been a spellcaster, as she is wearing a spell component pouch and lying next to her is a spellbook.

Loot:

Upon inspection, the body has a wand which lies underneath her robes, as though she dropped it while she was using it
A fine golden amulet worth 50gp depicting a dragon wrapped around a crystal
A spellbook containing the following spells
2nd Level Spells
Darkvision
Web
Gabal's Superior Missile
1st Level Spells
Mage Armor
Shield
Magic Missile
Burning Hands
Feather Fall
Shocking Grasp
0 Level Spells
All cantrips except for Enchantment and Necromancy

Ash, the most valuable things in the apartment are the set of china and an ivory cat statue. It takes a little effort to move the chest of drawers to the window and upon hitting the ground it shatters, spilling its contents in a pile of wood and clothing.

The woman runs off with her cat before Ash returns from her apartment. She seems both terrified of Kiana and grateful, stammering "Th- th- thank you" before she leaves

"The world won't end because we stopped to help," Torrent begins, "Kiana and Ash, you really have shown that you are exactly what this place needs.

"I agree haste is of the utmost importance, but remember that the Resistance is for the people."

As you continue moving through the streets, a louder, powerful roar fills the night sky. Before you, people begin to panic and scream, running in all directions as fear grips them.

Flying slightly above, Kiana makes out a huge crimson bat winged creature the size of a house swooping about 600ft ahead. The chaos of the night and the distance make it nigh impossible to determine exactly what the creature is.

As you continue forward, you find people trampled as they fell amidst the panicked crowds.

You eventually reach the Depository, an eighty foot high tower located in the center of its district, and is surrounded by a fenced compound that is guarded day and night.

Torrent freezes up as she sees it. The guards at the gate lie dead.

"We must approach with caution, I hope nothing has happened to Reivereye"

She moves towards the two dead guards lying at the gate, checking their bodies. She takes 10 on a heal check They were killed by slim blades and with precision. Not the work of common thugs or rioters.

She holds up a set of keys, "Let's take a look inside." She tosses the keys to Sobrian, "You know how to sneak around, right?"

The Depository functions as a secure storage facility

Loot:

China Set is worth 80gp
Ivory cat statue is worth 20gp
Each of the guards is dressed in Chainmail
Each of the guards carries a longsword, longbow and a quiver of 20 arrows
Guard tally: 6

Kiana will be able to carry the woman and Whiskers to safety.

Upstairs, Ash leaps through the flames, unaffected by their heat, into the womans apartment.

Fire Damage: 1d1d6 ⇒ 3

Surveying the room, he sees a set of fine china in a cabinet, bearing designs of a small farm house, a set of drawers with a sleeve hanging out of the third drawer and lots of cat statues.

The flames are starting to creep into the room, there may not be time for multiple trips.

As Ash and Beauregarde rush into the building they find that the first two floors are yet untouched by the flames, but heat emanates from the upper stories.

The woman reaches out to Kiana's talons with her right arm, her left arm clutching a chubby cat. "It's only me and Whiskers in here!"

There are enough arrows flying that you don't need to worry about tracking at the moment Kiana

The streets are sometimes filled with people fleeing or empty as people take shelter, constantly shifting between full and empty depending on whether fire is present or not.

As you pass through the streets, a cluster of four storey buildings up ahead is hit by one of the Ragesian bombs. One of the windows bursts open with a woman screaming for help "Please someone! The hallway is on fire! Someone Save me!"

People in the area begin running away panicking.

Torrent pipes up "That was very good of you Rose," turning to Ash, "Maybe we can start by helping these good people find some shelter, but we still need to get to the Depository Tower to meet with Rivereye."

The ladies eyes flicker open and some of the mans burns begins to soften. The man lowers the woman to her feet, "Oh Sarah, thank the heavens"

The man sobs, "Thank you, thank you so much, its not a lot, but here take this." He reaches into his coat and produces a small medallion depicting a rearing griffon, gesturing for Rose to take it.

Thank you

Kathor sighs, "I will do my best for you, I don't know how much time I can buy, but hopefully it will be enough." Hew collects the body of the charred mercenary.

"Thank you again" he moves off, with his remaining forces.

The chaos in the sky and thoughout the city makes travel tough. Screaming civilians and falling wyverns and griffons create difficulties along the way.

A heavily burnt man carrying an limp woman calls to Rose for help "Please! I've seen you - you're one of those healers - please you need to help my wife."

A crying child runs up to the woman and starts pulling on her hand, "Mummy, mummy wake up!"

Sorry guys, haven't lost me, just lost a pet and been dealing with the effect its had on not only myself but my fiance as well

"No, you're not. But the Empire is coming," a well timed whump followed by roars and screeching causes him to reconsider, "well, it's here, and Leska's Inquisitors are on the hunt and offering good money. Renard is a greedy man and won't stop to weed out those who are good and those who are not."

He shifts uncomfortably.

"At 100 gold a head, you'd best watch who you trust, even though you wield powerful magics."

Kathor moves over to assist Sobrian lifting the crossbeam.

Assist roll: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Sobrian manages lift the crossbeam enough for the two half orcs to pull their fallen comrade out from under it, even though Kathor was unable to get a grip in his attempt to help.

"I work for a man named Renard, we are all members of the Black Horse mercenaries," he points to the insignia on the armband he wears. "We came seeking the bounty on spellcasters not loyal to the Ragesian empire. Torrent was our target," he glances around. "We've all been taught and seen that magic is dangerous, and we thought we were doing the right thing, with a little bit of a reward to boot - but clearly we were not."

"Someone is watching you, Torrent," he warns. "Someone has been giving Renard updates on your movements, it's how we knew to seek you here."

Sense Motive DC 17:

Kathor clearly has a strong sense of honour and dislikes working for the Black Horse mercenaries.

Seeing Rose and Barrack starting to douse the flames with magic, Torrent rushes forward with her holy symbol and calls out "By the Strength of the Oceans, I cleanse these flames!"

Channeling to harm: 1d6 ⇒ 4/2 = 2

A series of waves crashes about dousing the flames throughout the second floor of the building.

All those upstairs take 2 points of cold damage

A man lies still, trapped underneath a fallen crossbeam, with two muscled half orcs trying to pull him out.

The leader of the group of thugs seems to relax, his brow unfurrowing and he turns to those upstairs, "Thank you, I don't fully know what compelled you to help, especially after we came here to claim the bounty on the spellcasters among you. My name is Kathor, and I am in your debt."

Variant Channeling relevant rules:

An iconic ability of clerics is their power to channel positive or negative energy, whether for healing, for damage, or to turn or command the undead. However, given the great variety of deities and their divine portfolios, it naturally follows that some deities would endow their mortal servants with the power to channel energies in other ways that more closely mirror their particular focus. The following categories are examples of alternative channeling abilities based on the nature of a deity's power; for example, a fire deity's negative energy channeling may deal fire damage as part of or instead of the damage from channeling.

Ocean/Sea/Water: Heal—Creatures gain a channel bonus on Climb and Swim checks and Constitution checks to hold their breath; this bonus lasts for 1 minute. Creatures ignore fatigue from thirst and pressure damage from deep water for 1 minute. Harm—The harming effect is enhanced for creatures with the aquatic or water subtypes.

Rays probably not so much, area effects would

At the top of the stairs, smoke obscures vision, Sobrian can barely make out two figures pulling at something that appears stuck under a flming beam, nearby there is a charred body propped upright against a wall.

Torrent is making her way towards the charred body.

As Rose and Barrack move to survey the scene, they are witness to an aerial battle as hulking bat winged creatures roaring as they fly across the night sky. They are met by the Gate Pass guard riding griffins, but the response to the attack is clearly not enough as they are outnumbered 8 to 1.

The bat winged creatures seem to be dropping some kind of glass ball filled with sloshing liquids.

As you survey The Poison Apple, you quickly note that there must be some kind of fire starter and lots of oil in these bombs. A fire rages on the second floor of the tavern and screams for help are clear.

Smoke rises from all over the city.

Torrent calls out, "We can't let just let these men die!" She runs upstairs.

The leader of the group that tried to attack you barks at his men "Drop your weapons and leave them, we need to get in and try and help Dave, Banther, Quintal and Thevras." He drops his greatsword and rushes in.

The two men drop their saps and follow through.

Knowledge (Arcana) DC 16:

Wyverns are nasty, brutish, and violent reptilian beasts akin to more powerful dragons. They are always aggressive and impatient, and are quick to resort to force in order to accomplish their goals. For this reason, dragons generally look down upon wyverns, considering their distant cousins nothing more than primitive savages with a distinct lack of style or wit. In most cases, this generalization is spot-on. Although far from animalistic in intellect, and capable of speech, most wyverns simply can't be bothered with the subtlety of diplomacy, and prefer to fight first and parley later, and even then only if faced with a foe they can neither defeat nor flee from.

Wyverns are territorial creatures. Though they occasionally hunt in small groups for large prey, they are generally solitary creatures, hunting in areas ranging in size from 100 to 200 square miles. Wyverns have been known to fight to the death among themselves for the right to hunt a territory rich with prey.

Although constantly hungry and prone to mayhem, a wyvern that can be befriended (usually through a delicate combination of flattery, intimidation, food, and treasure) becomes a powerful ally. They often serve giants and monstrous humanoids as guardians.

A wyvern is about 16 feet in length, half of which is tail. The average wyvern weighs 2,000 pounds.

Torrent moves next to Ash, readying to hit anything that approaches the elven wizard.

"Bloody hell, I'd heard about these sorts, willing to profit from the Scourge!"

The men move forward again in an attempt to bust the door down.

Reflex Save Bounty Hunter Thug 1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16

The first Bounty Hunter doesn't see the lightning coming and is electrified, his body convulsing on the ground.

Reflex Save Bounty Hunter Thug 2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

The second, still holding the battering ram, dodges behind his comrade, managing to avoid the brunt of it, but still taking significant damage. As he charges towards the door, he attempts to ram it open, shouting "There's a powerful mage in there! Probably one of Gabal's!"

Break Door: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

He breaks through, only to be met with a glaive which slices straight through his chest, he crumples to the ground.

I used Rose's ready as she had a reach weapon and wasn't suffering any cover penalties when the door was broken down

A horrifying roar reaches its crescendo, as though something is passing over the tavern. A loud whump followed by the sound of shattering of wood and glass erupts from above. Fire begins to stream from upstairs.

Two screams can be heard upstairs followed by two loud thuds and whimpering. You hear "No no no no! Thevras, Quintal! Dave, get over here quick, they're dying!

A shout comes from beyond the front door "Please we surrender, let me rescue my men." The man in blackened half plate stepping forward. The other two rushing behind him.

Sense Motive DC12:

Torrent, despite an angry demeanor appears to be genuinely worried for the people upstairs, but doesn't seem to want to make that call.

Summary
Ash: Readied action triggered, Burning Hands
Barrack: Still Readying
Beauregarde: Still Readying
Kiana: Still Readying
Rose: Readied action triggered, attacked thug ramming the door open
Sobrian: Still Readying
Torrent: Reading Defense for Ash
Bounty Hunter Thugs: Copped a Lightning Hands, broke door down, waiting to be let in to help friends/comrades upstairs
Bounty Hunter Scouts: Burning upstairs
Bounty Hunter Leader: Offering Surrender

Hi all, are Barrack, Beauregarde and Sobrian maintaining readies?

Just want to know if I can move on with the next round of NPC actions.

These bounty hunters are going to have a bad day

Go with a DC 8 Strength Check to remove a board as a move action, the windows aren't as secure as the door

Electricity would work (and only scorch the window boards), the issue is more the size of the gap, you could pry one of the boards back to get your hand through if you wanted to.

Depends on the spell, something like a burning hands would also blow up the boarded window. A projectile spell like Ray of Frost or Magic Missile would work.

They are currently in range of a burning hands.

That makes a lot more sense now - thanks for the heads up

Handy tip - bows are x3 on a critical hit

No worries - sorry to hear everythings on fire

When Ash looks out the window, he sees a group of 4 men dressed in scale mail. Two of them appear to be holding a portable battering ram which they are moving toward the front floor.

Bearegarde's Bluff:

Thugs Sense Motive: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17
Scouts Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Leader Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 13

Ash then sees a powerfully built man dressed in blackened half plate approach from the street and he calls out "Front door! NOW!"

Ash:

You notice each of the men wearing red armbands with a black horse stitched into them along with some writing underneath.

What languages does Ash speak?

As he does so, the men with the battering ram attempt to beat the door down.
Assist roll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Primary break: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

The door shudders, but does not break. Shouts come from the other side of the door "Drop your weapons and come out quietly - we don't want to have to break any valuable heads!"

Torrent calls out "Just try us!" She then looks around at you and says, "Looks like we're in for some fun!"

Summary
Ash checked outside
Barrack is ready to hit anything coming through the door
Beauregarde attempted to bluff
Kiana is readying to shoot at anyone coming down the stairs
Rose is reading to hit anything coming through the front door
Sobrian is readying to hit anything coming through the front door
Torrent appears to be waiting and calling out challenges
Bounty Hunter Scouts have not revealed themselves
Bounty Hunter Thugs failed to open the door
Bounty Hunter Leader launched the attack

Just waiting on Ash's post for the initiative round.

My bad - there is no doorway at the stairs - probably why I was confused. I'll make sure to up my description game

Barrack Saltstone wrote:

The burly dwarf quickly crossed to the door opposite Sobrian in a surprisingly surreptitious manner.

I'm very sure that Beauregarde is at the table and Barrack moved to the front door when he heard noise upstairs. From my point of view, Barrack moved to the door rather than the staircase.

For reference, the room is 50ft long across the front and 30ft deep. The ceiling is 8 foot high. There are doors two doors at the back leading out of the main room, but they all have chairs, tables and barrels blockading them. The bar is five foot away from the back wall. There is one table set up near the bar which many of you are around. To the left of the front door, the staircase comes down from the second floor against the wall.

I'm assuming Kiana is maintaining her ready

Torrent raises a holy symbol that dangles from her wrist, depicting a wave breaking "May the Sea's Strength bless us! I fear that we have trouble on the way" She then picks up her battle axe, which was next to her at the table.

Bless:

Bless fills your allies with courage. Each ally gains a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and on saving throws against fear effects.[ooc]

[ooc]Bless counters and dispels bane.[ooc]

More noise can be heard upstairs as well as noises from the front door to the tavern. It sounds like a group of men in each place.

Suddenly a series of roars erupts from some distance away, outside the tavern and a series of screeches rise in reply. Muted thumps, like the sound of ripe fruit landing on the roofs of houses, fill the air.

[ooc]Summary
Beauregarde: Readying an action for a hostile entering via the door
Ash: Casts Mage Armor
Kiana: Readying a shot at the first hostile to descend the stairs
Torrent: Casts bless and collects her weapon.
Bount Hunters: Prepared their assault.

Really sorry again guys - I didn't end up getting back to Sydney until late yesterday.

I will have a post up forthwith.

I will try to be online as much as possible over this weekend - but I am attending a destination wedding. As soon as I see Barrack post I will kick off the block of NPC initiatives.

Just noticed something Ash, shouldn't your Arcane Reservoir have a max of 4? So it should read 3/4.

ACG wrote:
An arcanist has an innate pool of magical energy that she can draw upon to fuel her arcanist exploits and enhance her spells. The arcanist's arcane reservoir can hold a maximum amount of magical energy equal to 3 + the arcanist's level. Each day, when the arcanist prepares spells, the arcanist's arcane reservoir fills with raw magical energy, gaining a number of points equal to 3 + 1/2 her arcanist level. Any points she had from the previous day are lost. She can also regain these points through the consume spells class feature and some arcanist exploits. The arcane reservoir can never hold more points than the maximum amount noted above; points gained in excess of this total are lost.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

"What are you all gawking at? Why's everyone jumping up?" At first she looks confused. Then her expression narrows, "There's someone here, isn't there? Upstairs?"

Round 1 Initiative
Ash: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Barrack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Beauregarde: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Kiana: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Rose: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Sobrian: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Torrent: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (16) - 1 = 15
Bounty Hunter Scouts: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Bounty Hunter Thugs: 1d20 ⇒ 17
Bounty Hunter Leader: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

Order will be:
PC Group 1: Barrack, Ash, Kiana
NPC Group: Torrent and Bounty Hunters (average of 14.25)
All PCs then NPCs

All actions have taken place as above. Round 1 starts from this point

  • Ash is aware of the potential threat and has indicated where it is likely coming from
  • Barrack is at front of the door and aware of the potential threat
  • Beauregarde is waiting for the potential threat to reveal itself
  • Kiana has her bow out and is hovering, aware of the potential threat
  • Rose is aware of the potential threat
  • Sobrian has drawn his hanbo and is waiting for the threat to reveal itself
  • Torrent is waiting for the threat to reveal itself

5gp scribing cost plus 2.5gp to read from another spellbook, you would have had access to spellbooks at the College

That looks a little too powerful for a 0 level spell, would you consider a reduction to the radius to 60ft (to reflect the similar spell Deeper Darkness) a fair comprimise?

For most content outside the core line of books (CRB, APG, UM, UC, ACG) just let me know first. I'm generally pretty open to it and there's also a few new spells in this campaign that you'll have access to as they come up (like Gabal's Superior Missile)
