Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

You are able to head to the library with little to no trouble despite the choppy waters.

As before, the first two floors are relatively easy to access and do have knowledge on several topics you might be interested in to include the hags and witch covens local to the area and the relatively obscure phenomenon known as thunderbirds.

(Knowledge nature and Knowledge Arcana to try and understand the information)

But the knowledge you need most - the history of the region and its legends reside downstairs with the naga Ryssinia

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

Mparu nods Well as I said, you don't need the stars in order to know the only nearby group of humanoids is the barbaric Locatath tribe that resides in the open waters. Approaching them safely is not something I have much experience with.

As for the constellations you'll need to know, the gods of the Lirgeni - of which most of are descendents - were largely philosopher kings of Lirgen of importance. You are staring at me like this makes no sense to you so perhaps I should explain.

Hyrantum - where we now currently stand - was once the capital of a proud nation called Lirgen. Lirgen was run by a group of philosopher-seers who used divination to rule with wisdom and fairness. Unfortunately, the Eye of Abendego and Death of Aroden caught them by as much surprise as it did everyone else. When they Eye first emerged it was far wilder and more powerful than it is right now and it crushed Lirgen and as you can see most of Hyrantum. The Lirgeni people scattered all over the region and lived as refugees all over the world from Taldor to Minata and everywhere in between. All of us here are Lirgeni-descended I think. This region holding power over our blood. This process - this planetarium - was used by those philosopher-kings and the exact processes are somewhat known to me, but if you can find the lore on this place it will guarantee you can make auguries on the topics of your choice.

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

As you announce your intention to go to the Planetarium, Mparu stops you to explain.

The ceiling is a map of the stars and as you know, the stars are useful in predicting the future or for gaining answers. The key to activation is to trace the exact ancient Lirgeni constellations you seek guidance from out on the planterium in the order of the importance to the lore. As you do so, you will awaken your own third eyes - once things are set you will need to clear your mind of all idle thoughts and think only on the questions on which you seek guidance. The whole process takes at least an hour but the more time you devote to it the more rewarding the divination.

I have great knowledge of this ancient history and geography myself but I lack the ability to swim needed to use the mechanisms of the planterium - they are deep underwater. Plus after my last sojourn...I do not wish to leave again so soon. Fortunately, the lore on ancient Lirgeni culture should be accessible in the Parallax Library next door.

With that she helps you all pack up and wishes you good luck - giving you three castings of goodberry to take with you.

Goodberries: 6d4 ⇒ (3, 4, 4, 2, 1, 2) = 16

As you revel into the night you are able to speak with a few more people and find the town is more or less welcoming.

And that most of them did have at least one family member or loved one who they followed here thanks to the dreams.

As morning rises and you take off back towards the university's library and university do you have a desire to make any side treks or head straight to the library or planetarium>

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

The dreamers...they apparently dreamed of the Old Hyrantum. Back before the disasters struck and it was ruins. Apparently those who do are descendents of those who once lived here. You arent the first to be drawn here by dreams - if as we all suspect that's why you're here. The Stormreaders are some kind of coven of witches or even hags who needs your blood or visions for something.

Given that they've got that thunderbird and that when theyre all together they wield wicked powerful magic we have been unable to oppose them Mparu sagely replies to your queries.

One of the fisherman overhears this and nods its not just the dreamers. Anything from Old Hyrantum seems to be of major importance to them. And their presence here has been stirring up the local monsters making fishing and hunting for those relics perilous. I dont know how much longer we can holdout. Plus that thunderbird...

Mparu interrupts That bird may not be a willing ally. Much like that dinosaur the Skum had enslaved I sense that this is not where it wants to be either.

As Makda suggests allies a hush falls over the people and they consider. Makda considers That Naga in the library for one if you can somehow reason with her. She's half bad with knowledge-lust though. Theres also the Wavewhisper Locathah clan. Theyre not usually friendlt but given that theyre just as disadvantaged by the Storm Readers being here they might help. There's also the possibility that the wrackway - an area where the wreckage of dozens of ships has floated together - might have some old siege weapons we could use when you decide to make your move we could defend the town with them

She then slaps her head as if she had forgottem something Oh right and the reason I was even at the planetarium to begin with. That building is actually an enormous divination focus. You may be able to use it to gather more intelligence, maybe even to find more allies.

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

As you debate what to do, the night begins to fall.

The townspeople offer you a hut to sleep in and cook a modest fish stew for you.

The gathering is somber, though they do seem to be excited to have their cleric back.

She looks at the gathered tribute. She looks at you significantly. She is obviously still highly dubious to your presence but looks over the collected treasure and sighs.

Yes, yes I suppose that will be enough. She collects the treasure.

We will be back for more in a few weeks...of course if you produce another of those dreamers...that would set you right for a while

A glint in her eyes twinkle as she goes away onto a boat and paddles off.

Thats it for part 1 - you can level up and I'll get chronicles soon - please roll for dayjob and re-present your information for my reporting

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

Mak'da gets the sense - not so much from the woman but from the other people gathered that this is sort of an ominous question.

A moment of akward silence passes.

Well then allow these new ones to present this tribute to me - what have you brought and why is it worthy of the protection we Storm Callers provide

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

She frowns.

You can sense that she senses you are also holding back, and thus having called each other's bluffs to some extent she bites her lip a moment.

This is simply a remote area. But Hyrantum has a powerful pull for its descendents. Maybe you don't actively remember a dream but more a... longing for this place, yes?

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

She seems to be listening for something very specific.

I agree Hyrantum is an amazing place. Great for scholars. But are you sure that's all. You don't happen to have had any...dreams about this place, have you?

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

Earlier...

Mparu smiles at Arisira. Oh my, I guess I did forget to introduce myself, yes I am Mparu, I am the local priestess of Gozreh for Hyrantum - prior to the Storm Callers showing up I was pretty much the de facto spirutual leader.

---

Now

I am Orleva...the representative of the Storm Readers. It is good to meet you Mak'da and Vera. Tell me what brings you to Hyrantum, it pleases us to see new people drawn to us.

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

The tribute is usually paid to single member of their cabal but I would truly have to caution against murdering them! Early on someone tried just that and the Thunderbird killed him and every single person sharing his bloodline as punishment. They should be coming to collect this within a day or two, so we should hurry to get there in time.

At Valin she stops and thinks. She stops and gathers several treasures from the observatory, including an astrolabe, which she asks Valin to carry.

The Thunderbird is likely not under its own control its true. But we can discuss those logistics further when I am not on a deadline

You hurry back to town where the people are already gathered, waiting on the Storm Reader to come and collect her tribute. She finally arrives, a single human woman with dark hair and light skin, probably chelish.

Alright what have you collected this time. Please present the tribute - and these new settlers post-hate

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

She struggles to find the words.

Its...its a Thunderbird. An almost elemental representation of the concept of storms. A quasi-herald of the storms itself. Primal. And being bent to the will of these storm callers - controlling him as they control the storms that rage over us. As for the other thing...you should be there when we present tribute. You might be able to learn something I have missed.

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

An Aboleth is a massive sea monster which corrupts land life and uses madness as its weapons...and is believe it not not the worst enemy we have right now.

She begins to stand and dusts herself off.

That group of supposed Gozrehans, the Storm Readers, with their Thunderbird they are enslaving are causing these Storms. It is the best we can do as a people to just provide them Tribute which is what brought me out here. Help me finish collecting these baubles and then we really should turn back

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

She opens her eyes slowly, surprisingly serene given the circumstances.

I am Mparu, humble servant of the Storm Lord. And that...was Kuurung. A local Skum who had some sort of plan to bring her aboleth lord here to attack us. But even they were scare of those who have come to town lately.

She continues.

“My captor Kuurung was an enchanter, and he excelled at magically controlling huge monsters, such as the beast you fought in the main hall of the planetarium, yet even he seemed concerned that the monsters of Hyrantam had grown more violent. It’s these storms. Hyrantam is no stranger to bad weather, but the unrelenting winds and waves have struck from directions so unusual that the local fauna and monster life have been thrown into turmoil. If the storms aren’t stopped soon, who knows what even greater peril might rise from these waters?”

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

Kuurung gets plunked and falls backwards clutching at his wounds.

In the next room an elderly human female is bound and has a gag in his mouth.

The first of the rooms is a bust as its merely a collapsed tower going upward.

Scarab Sages

In which case Valin is able to do what he said he did

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

Yeah, I am fine with allowing that - I could have been more precise or drawn a diagram but basically you went into the library on surface level, went underwater in the library and entered the Planetarium from its front entrance 20 feet underwater.

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

Yes to be clear, you are at the bottom of 20 feet of water and swimming to the top requires DC 10 swim checks. Above the water is another 30 feet of clearance before the ceiling, or 10 feet if you manage to get onto any of the platforms

To that end, Valin, I need DC 10 swim check for you to get half of the way to the platform unless you possess a swim speed I dont know about

Scarab Sages

Leafy Leshy Cavalier Lost At Bitter End Ire of the Storm Campaign

T'Kemba is able to pull everyone into the planetarian after helping Valin get the door pulled open.

We are now on slide 3

You enter the flooded bottom chamber but (Praise Cayden) blessedly the water doesn't seem to have reached the upper level of this structure.

The chamber is littered with broken benches and the area that was likely once set up as a theatre for observers to be given a demonstration on the stars lays in ruins as the still water feels as though you are disturbing it from a deep slumber. As you do however ripples come out from beneath the stairs and a creature emerges, looking territorial and emits a mighty and thunderous bellow before anyone can react, attempting to cow the obvious threat to its domain, T'Kemba.

Intimidate: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28

Initiative:

Tylosaurus: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Arisira: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Valin: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21

Mak’da: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
T'Kemba: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

Water Combat rules:

The water here is over 20 feet deep meaning if you wish to move along the bottom that's fine but if you wish to reach the steps you are going to need to swim as though its calm water (DC 10 swim check) to make progress at 1/4 normal speed as a move action or 1/2 as a full round action unless you have a swim speed. A swim speed will grant you a +8 on this check.

Additionally, if you make an attack from anywhere but over the water, you are going to be subject to the underwater combat rules regarding ranged attacks and melee attacks (most salient for melee is that bludgeoning and slashing attacks take -2 penalty to hit and deal half damage which piercing are normal and for ranged weapons, you take a -2 to hit for every 5 feet of water the attack passes through).

Ryssina casts a spell of some sort very quickly, conjuring a series of air bubbles to protect the books and then opens the doors causing a rush of water into the room but allow you access to swim across the way to the Planetarium. I will need swim checks and then a strength check to open the door.
