"Mortals have almost released this chaotic anomaly once and we are tasked to not let that happen again. If you do not refrain from exiting this chamber, I will have to subdue you by force.", the mechanical being's emotionless gaze somehow conveying the sincerity of its threat.

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

Assuming the key would be produced

Artemus pulls out the key, prompting the kolyarut to draw its weapon and point it at the arcanist. "You will hand over that key immediately. The being sealed below must not be released."

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

DC 13 Int check:

The party recovered a strange key from the protean side of things, in the strange alcove where the odd skull was, too. The key happens to look similar to the pattern on the floor.

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

Faeros doesn't believe so. Nilfyr at a safe distance, uses his polearm to press against the runes. The rune panel slides away revealing a slot for a dozen tiny holes in a circular pattern.

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

"Calculations dictate that if your statement is true, the forces of chaos are almost exterminated. The door shall be secured.", the kolyarut finally relaxing its stance and now returning to a position in the middle of the the bronze pattern on the floor.

With no combat threat now, the party can look around some. The northern right portion of the room has been altered, likely the protean's influence. The large bronze plates on the floor are inscribed with hundreds of runes each, although all of the party members can find a rune in several languages that they understand, and many more that they do not recognize the script. In each case though, the runes are all for one word: warning.

Faeros however, spots one of the runes is slightly off and raised slightly above the others.

Thunderstealer Diplo: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

The kolyarut pauses for a second, before carefully sheathing its weapon. "It is against our protocol to identify ourselves to the protean foes. K394-M43 must have trusted you with its eternal designation to reach this stalemate battleground."

"How much of the forces of chaos have you slain?", it queries.

Botting and moving on

Artemus tries to talk down the kolyarut from the back.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22

Unfortunately, Artemus couldn't provide enough logic to satisfy the outsider.

Faeros readies his bow, but waits to see if the others can talk down the inevitable.

The inevitable points at Nilfyr who hears a voice in his head to back away.

Is it a 1 save?: 1d20 ⇒ 7

However, Nilfyr doesn't let it happen again and retains his senses. The inevitable then performs one more trick.

Is it another 1 save?: 1d20 ⇒ 20

Artemus confirms that the kolyarut tried to paralyze Nilfyr, but once again fails.

Sorry for the quiet, recovering from a surgery and have been sleeping a lot.

"Nope. Nope. Nope."

The imentesh speaks some strange words and pops out of sight. Art indentifies this as a spell-like dimension door..

The kolyarut still has its blade drawn and darts towards the party. "You are not inevitable and must be removed.", with Nilfyr being the first target of its wrath. It got a single move action before rolling initiatives as the party partially delayed for a response; same time period the protean used to disappear.

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

So one miiiinor thing based on position, Thunderstealer, are you indeed standing on the red rune?

Taking the loot, the party continues through the runed room. There is another door straight ahead and with the party readied, they move forward.

This huge chamber was once square, yet the northern half has bubbled and run as if melted. Above, the ceiling arches up in a dome braced by grand arms of stone carved to resemble the ribs of some great beast. From the dome’s zenith, the perfect green glass column of the Emerald Spire spears downward.

Where the Spire meets the floor, it is clasped by two wide,
horizontal brass doors set flush with the stone. The Spire pierces these doors along their seam, where the bronze conforms perfectly to its smooth cylinder. Runes and hieroglyphics—some crude, some incredibly intricate—cover the doors.

Right in front of you, shocked at the sudden entry, is another one of the serpentine imentesh proteans. On the other side near the opposite door is another kolyrat inevitable. There is a sudden shift in the air as both of the outsiders pause, waiting to see what the party does.

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

Finally updating, sick day yesterday knocked me out.

Deciding to figure out what Faeros found earlier, the party regroups back in the island room. Ready once again, Nilfyr pushes the outline of the door in.

This small alcove is shaped as if it were formed from natural stone, yet every surface appears to be formed from maroon velvet. The walls are warm to the touch and gently pulse, like a heartbeat. The floor is covered with a number of various items. Sickly potted plants, some risque paintings of inevitables, and a stuffed pigeon with one leg show some of the strange taste of the proteans. However, there is loot of value which Artemus will identify: a folding boat, a hand of glory, a set of marvelous pigments, and a belt of giant strength +2. There are also a pair of keys, one made of the same green material as the Spire core, and the other a two-foot long mass of twisted and tentacle-like tines with a T handle.

"As unescorted beings entering from the territory chaos, I can only assume your forms and story are an attempt to deceive me. But run, knowing that the might of law will stop you."

Nilfyr, taking the cue, closes the door and retrieves his weapon, embarrassed that he let his mind falter.

A couple of options still. You have the secret door Faeros spotted in the floating island room as well as the pair of double doors in the strange rune room just outside of the inevitable territory on the other side. Where to?

Fort Inevitable Map map Gardens map

Taking the valuables although leaving the skull there, the party then follows their counterclockwise path.

The southern end of this chamber is squared off and bare, yet as the room extends northward, the walls and floor twist and melt. Clusters of glowing blue crystals extend from the warped ceiling and floor, and from each cluster emerges a faint sound akin to young girls singing nonsense words.

Another kolyarut inevitable stands guard, its large blade drawn at the party. It speaks with an emotionless voice. "Harbingers of chaos, you shall meet your end here."

Not giving the party time to respond, Nilfyr feels the urge to drop his weapon.

Nilfyr, against his own desires, drops his polearm to the ground. The inevitable darts forward with both hands on its blade and at the half-elf!

Thunderstealer spies some valuables among the various piles around the skull. He finds a soft pink pearl and a cut gemstone within the rocks. Several vials have liquid and perhaps feel of potion. The others investigate, with Artemus determining that the peculiarities Thunderstealer spied are a pearl of power (2nd) and a pink rhomboid ioun stone. The useful vials in that pile are a pition of blink, a potion of haste, and a potion of nondetection.

He also finds that the skull radiates a strong conjuration magic; he can tell that it is somehow portal related, but not sure how exactly.

Hopping across the air, Thunderstealer finds an unusual sight.

The cavern has lost most of its floor and ceiling to endless pink sky, and a multicolored whirlpool floats in the air at the chamber’s center, pulsing with light. Deeper inside, a bleached, serpentine skull several feet in diameter sits in an alcove above a narrow ledge; two red tulips are growing up through its vacant eyeholes. Tiny glass bottles full of liquid and stacks of small stones ring the skull.

The party licks its wounds (more so literally for Thunderstealer). Using their various magical means, the party easily traverses the floating platforms. However, one of the imenteshes begins to stir, but Nilfyr reacts quickly and strikes down the serpentine outsider before beheading it to make sure it doesn't come back. The other is likewise dealt with in a resolved final fashion fast healing, yay.

As the party moves through the chamber, Faeros points out a strange outcropping where he sees the outline of a door marked on the map with a S. A pair of double doors would progress further into the floor, but the sound of whirling air can be heard from the north east around a partially blocked off area of this strange room.

Yeah, mostly, but without anything to immediately shoot and trusting Nilfyr's judgment of 'nope', he'll delay. So now, it'll be round by round of party/vs monsters until something does something unique. So party is up first!

And starting IVF stuff to expand my family outside of pets, so sorry for the lack of reply. That was kind of a on the fly snap call from the doc on when I had to head over to do that in another state for some testing and it was a bit of a process. Got to do something else in a week and a half or so, but if all goes well, should hopefully be expecting in a month or two!

The threats defeated, the party patches themselves up 21 damage to Nilfyr, but I'll say 5 CLW wand charges will take care of that!. Ready to go, they move forward into the next chamber.

The high walls of this meandering cavern look natural, yet the floor and ceiling disappear entirely. Above and below, this room gives way to a vast sky of swirling pink and orange clouds stretching to infinity. Scattered islands of flat stone float unsupported among the clouds, level with the room’s two doorways.

Looking down, the space not on the floating islands do look dangerous...

A pair of serpentine creatures with humanoid torsos, but with avian heads and wings turns to the sound of the door opening.

Despite the surprise from the unusual array of attacks, Nilfyr manages to stave off most of them although a pair of tentacles does batter him up more; he felt his head try to get foggy, but his focus remains clear that these enemies must be dealt with.

Nilfyr hears raucuous giggling from the other side form three different voices. Ready for anything, he opens the door.

This chamber is large and oddly shaped, with numerous alcoves and protrusions. Instead of stone, many of its walls appear to be curtains of shifting green mist that whirl and twist but always maintain a flat, vertical plane. Through the mist, another room is dimly visible.

Nilfyr briefly sees a serpentine creature with a layer of additional tentacles laughing playfully as it slithers through a mist-laden wall and disappears. It's laughter can be heard elsewhere in the room, though. Two other such creatures turn their heads towards the now open door and reveal toothy maws as they approach with a malicious gait.

DC 24 Kn: Planes:

These creatures are naunets, serpentine proteans that exist purely to fight against stability as shocktroops of chaos. Their tentacles can elicit total confusion as well as constrict foes, and working together, groups of naunets can temporarily bring forth matter from the plane of Chaos to disrupt foes. Like other proteans, they cannot be bound and their vitals are too random to strike at.

But of course!

Which direction? double doors to the north or double doors to the east?

Artemus can't seem to get a full read on these runes. It looks like that they are designed specifically to alter bodies with each rune focused on a different attribute. But what and to what extent escapes the arcanist.

Any other testing or investigating? Also, with Artemus' Appraise check, you all can retroactively grab the items he uncovered.

That's been much of my past couple of years, so no worries!

No investigation into the mysterious runes of runing? Or something. :P

Nilfyr, the ever vigilant guide, motions the party to follow him, using the blade from his polearm to line the door before giving it a fair push.

A featureless hallway seems to creep alongside what should be the main chambers on this floor. Also unlike the main chambers, there is no circuitry or illumination from them assuming Art will fix that with a dancing lights.

Moving slowly, the party heads straight along the path, which janks back and forth once until it leads to a new door. Nilfyr doesn't hear anything from the other side and nods towards the party as he pulls open the door.

This room is shaped like two towering cylinders fused together, with the southeastern wall partially caved in. Etched into the floor in the center of each cylinder is a glowing rune. The northern rune glows green and the southern rune glows red.

Detect Magic:

These runes are imbued with immense transmutation magic. While the runes are etched permanently, the magic within seems to be extremely chaotic and you cannot properly identify what will happen by touching the rune.

Nilfyr points out the hidden passage as another potential avenue of continuance. Visible door or seeeecret door?

Deciding to give the inevitables their space, the party goes the other route.

Beyond the other door, the walls of this stone room are covered with shelves holding a wide variety of wires, crystals, cogs, and what look like severed wings or limbs made of clockwork. Tall stacks of similar items — arranged neatly by color, size, and less obvious criteria —clutter the floor, though a clear path runs between the two doors.

A pair of mechanical eyeball whir towards the group's direction. They begin to emit sounds quickly until the kolyarut barks out from the main room, "No need to alarm; these mortals are allowed passage.". The pair of unusual inevitables begin to call down and return to their vigilant positioning.

DC 20 Kn: Planes:

The inevitables are arbiters, often guides and scouts for the inevitable forces.

DC 25 Appraise:

Among the various materials on the shelves, you do spy some usable gear; a greatsword, a breastplate, and a trio of tokens made of a glowing green metal.

DC 30 Perception:

You happen to spy the outline of a door along western-most portion of the southern wall.

The party moves on, undisturbed by the trio of inevitables that watch them turn right from the stairs and enter into more of this mechanical labyrinth. More golden wires lead in a shimmering ribbon from the door you entered from to the next around the corner. The air reverberates with a low hum.

Artemus, having a better look at the wiring, determines that there could be some value to taking the valuable metals, although it would take some time to do so.

GM Dice:

Nothing!

Not finding anything else of worth in the small chamber, the party is about to continue on until a metallic voice calls out behind them.

"Mortals, beyond that passageway is the equivalent of what you would call an infirmary for my kind. However, we have setup automated defenses to any non-inevitable that crosses past a threshold. You have been warned."

Continue forward or to the other direction?

To the northern or southern doors? First response calls it!

"We unfortunately have little information other than this being's release will result in a massive influx of invariabilities to this area, perhaps all of HS390, or Golarion as you call this world."

"You may secure this floor of the protean threat within this floor with our approval. The contents of this area are also of no interest. However, descent down below is prohibited as we cannot allow you mortals to risk releasing the being captive there.", the centaur inevitables declare in unison. They then lower their arms and step back, offering the sign of safe passage.

And just realized that there is a follow up on what Thunderstealer brought up, although it is not directly listed in the wording of this area. Sorry for missing it first pass!

A vague area that Artemus and Faeros both thought held a statue now moves as a familiar form. "Yes, these mortals, despite their chaotic, fleshy forms, have proved themselves useful to me." A metallic humanoid form emerges, although it limps still with some of the damage it received before you first met the being.

With that, the two centaur figures release their magics and lower their arms. The kolyarut asks a more properly worded question to the party, "As you stated previously that you are explorers, what is your end goal to this complex?"

@Artemus: Proteans are to chaos as what inevitables are to law. Only the most deranged try to bargain with proteans for power as the outsiders typically are to convince to uphold any bargains or contracts. They are generously amorphous and are immune to cold or anything else that would try to bind them.

@Thunderstealer: One tilts its head, almost curiously at you. "You have encountered K394-M43. It shall be noted that he required mortal assistance with his designated protocol."
