Looking to have a NPC get hit with an allergic reaction. My story plot aside, wanted to get consensus if Antitoxin or Neutralize Poison would counter a allergic reaction. Thoughts?

Liberty's Edge

Want to do a bit of a twist on Bracers of Archery:

Heavily decorated bracers in theme of archery and hunting.

3x Day, for up to an hour's time, the bearer can summon forth a +1 bow. (short, long or composite or correct strength for wielder). When they go to draw the bow, an arrow will also come forth from the bracers, giving a maximum of 20 arrows in a day's time.

Thoughts?

How would you go about pricing something like this?

Thanks for ideas and comments!

Liberty's Edge

I don't mean for the night. For the whole inn. Got a PC who want to buy an Inn. What's a good price for one do you think?

Liberty's Edge

I was thinking of creating a variant ranger that had two combat styles.

What would be fair to have them give up/trade in?

Is the loss of spellcasting enough?

Thoughts?

Here's a excerpt of the Secret Page spell...

--------------------
A comprehend languages spell alone cannot reveal a secret page's contents. You are able to reveal the original contents by speaking a special word. You can then peruse the actual page and return it to its secret page form at will. You can also remove the spell by double repetition of the special word. A detect magic spell reveals dim magic on the page in question but does not reveal its true contents. True seeing reveals the presence of the hidden material but does not reveal the contents unless cast in combination with comprehend languages. A secret page spell can be dispelled, and the hidden writings can be destroyed by means of an erase spell.
--------------------

The last line is where my question lies.

Is it meant that the dispel magic destroys the hidden message? Or does it reveal the hidden message?

The reason I ask is that otherwise you need a True Seeing (a 5th/6th level) spell (plus Comprehend Languages) in order to see the message, that a "simple" 3rd level Dispel Magic might be able to do?

Granted, Dispelling it may reveal the hidden message, but it also destroys the secrecy and any spy would then play his hand, so to speak, revealing that the hidden message was intercepted in some fashion.

Any thoughts?

So, any +1 (or better) weapon bypasses any non-magical armor's DR under the Armor as DR variant rule? Or a Large creature?

So, not only does Armor/DR make it easier to hit someone, they then effectively take away the DR by adding the Magic/Large bypass.

You're protected from "most monster attacks" but nearly all 1st level spellcasters can just do Magic Weapon to bypass that. Guess what spell just hit every caster's spell list that can possibly get it?

Same thing goes for Adamantine basically going to the top of every "must have" list in order to beat magical armor DR.

Liberty's Edge

Hello. Building simple magic items is no problem, but I have an item in my game that I would like some help pricing out.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter how much it costs, its a special item for the campaign and each PC has one. Still, I am curious. And I would like the tutoring/help with design more complex items.

Here it is:

Amulet. (CL10)
* +1 Deflection to AC
* +2 to Diplomacy with Good & Neutral Fey
* -2 to Diplomacy with Evil Fey
* 3/day Light spell
* 1/Use Heal (If used, the item becomes non-magical)
* 1/Use Resurrection (This takes THREE amulets used in concert, all three become non-magical)

Notes/Thoughts:
* Basically I wanted the amulet to give the PCs a bonus for interacting positively with goodly fey and a penalty/intimidation factor with evil fey. Goodly fey are going to want to listen to, help and be friendly to the PCs, where as evil fey are going to want to attack. Is there a better way to reflect this than what I have above?

Thanks for your help in this.

Is anyone using the Variant Rules (Armor as DR, W&V, Called Shots, etc) in their games? How are they going? What difficulties have you come across? What changes have you made to them to make them work? What cool thing has come out of using them?

Liberty's Edge

First, let me quote this rule note:

"Naturalist (Ex): An archivist who has identified a creature with a Knowledge check appropriate to its type can use performance to share strategies for defeating it with allies in combat. The archivist and any allies within 30 feet gain a +1 insight bonus to AC and on attack rolls and saving throws against exceptional, supernatural, and spell-like abilities used by creatures of that specific kind of monster (e.g., frost giants, not all giants or all humanoids). This bonus increases by +1 at 5th level and every six levels thereafter. This language-dependent ability requires visual and audible components. This ability replaces inspire courage."

Okay, let me ask; What was the intent of this ability?

Is it only meant to be used against "monsters", or could it be used against humans, and other goodly races?

I have a player who likes the write up, but we're not totally sure how this is supposed to be able really work. We get the actual mechanics of HOW it works, via bonuses, etc., etc. Where we have some confusion is when dies it apply.

We are interested in the design-thematics as much as the RAW.

Thanks for your help!

Liberty's Edge

Hunter's (Companion) Bond has a time limit based on Wisdom, okay. But we'd like clarification on how many times a combat/day/etc it can be done.

I read it as open to as many times as the Ranger wants, so long as he spends the Move Action to activate it.

This is correct?

Liberty's Edge

What was supposed to release today, 09-08-2010?

I recently heard that the Critical Hit and Fumble decks are no longer in publication, can this be confirmed or denied, please? Thanks you very much.

As I have no skill or talent in making programs and such, I was wondering if anyone has already or would be up to creating a Pathfinder version of the Jamis Buck NPC generator.

You can find it at: http://www.andargor.com/

It's about four sections down the page.

Liberty's Edge

Hello. So I stated this up this morning and would like to get some help with it. I am not sure about all the numbers and such and would love some input.

It is inspired from this: http://www.reapermini.com/DarkMaiden

Frightful Presence (Ex) a dark maiden very presence is unsettling to foes. Activating this ability is a free action that is usually part of an attack or charge. Opponents within range who witness the action may become frightened or shaken. The range is 60 feet, and the duration is 5d6 rounds. An affected opponent can resist the effects with a successful Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 frightful creature's racial HD + frightful creature's Cha modifier; the exact DC is given in the creature's descriptive text). An opponent that succeeds on the saving throw is immune to that same creature's frightful presence for 24 hours. Frightful presence is a mind-affecting fear effect.

First off, I am not technical...I am lucky if I remember not to use my CD/DVD drive tray as a coffee mug holder...

;)

That said, I would LOVE to see a Pathfindery version of the most wondrous NPC generator as done by Mr. Jamis Buck.

Anyone up for the challenge? (I am willing to do some helping out.)

Liberty's Edge

SO SOME SPOILERS ARE PROBABLY HERE...

Okay, so we finished the Bastard of Erebus last session and I will be doing a few side missions to get them deeper into 3rd level, but I am reading ahead, of course, and I am just not "feeling" Sixfold Trials.

What I mean to say is it is not *interesting* to me. Don't get me wrong I love the play *idea*, but I kinda...well... *hate* ...the dungeon/knot thing.

So I am considering #26 and just doing my own thing, then later on have the Pathfinder show up with an extra set of keys for the lodge.

Alternatively, I was thinking their next "AP mission" could be going to escort the Pathfinder into the city and helping her just steal the keys from someone else other than the mayor.

I don't know.

SO, please, post up what you think is GREAT about #26 and why I SHOULD use it. Alternatively, tell me why I am right and should ignore it and go on with something else...

Thanks!!!

Liberty's Edge

Okay, a question came up in our game last night about grapple. First, let's take a look at the text:

Quote:
If You Are Grappled: If you are grappled, you can attempt to break the grapple as a standard action by making a combat maneuver check (DC equal to your opponent's CMD; this does not provoke an attack of opportunity) or Escape Artist check (with a DC equal to your opponent's CMD). If you succeed, you break the grapple and can act normally. Alternatively, if you succeed, you can become the grappler, grappling the other creature (meaning that the other creature cannot freely release the grapple without making a combat maneuver check, while you can).

Okay, we gots no problem with that part. ;)

Here's were we ran into a hiccup...

Quote:
Instead of attempting to break or reverse the grapple, you can take any action that requires only one hand to perform, such as cast a spell or make an attack with a light or one-handed weapon against any creature within your reach, including the creature that is grappling you. See the grappled condition for additional details. If you are pinned, your actions are very limited. See the pinned condition in Conditions for additional details.

So, our situation...

We have monsters grapple a few of the party members. One is a Monk, the other a fighter-type.

If the Monk is grappled, can he use Flurry of Blows against his grappler? Can the Fighter make an attack with a bastard sword (he has the exotic weapon feat)?

Can they attack outside the grapple? (I am sure the answer is yes to this, but I want to make sure.)

Liberty's Edge

I have already made one adjustment.

I dropped True Seeing and Shout and will simply have a "Bonus Feat" entry to allow players to choose their own higher level adjustment. The two spells were more of me trying to find SOMEthing, but I think Bonus Feat is just fine.

Liberty's Edge

For the sake of the ol' printer, could you please, please make playtest stuff like this with the option to print *just the text*?

While I think all the background art is neat and all, and appreciate it for the eye candy that it is, I just don't need to WASTE ink on something that's a playtest. Something that isn't even going to be valid the moment Paizo starts to change things due to playtest returns (which is about a minute after the playtest file goes online ;) ).

PDFs can have layers, please use them to this end!

Thanks!!!

Liberty's Edge

Can a spellcaster cast a spell at a lower level. That is to say, they are 10th level, but for whatever reason, they want to cast a spell as if they were a lower level, can they?

Wizzo the 10th level Wizard wants his fireball to go off at 4d6 damage instead of 10d6, for example.

He's using the same spell slots and all.

Thanks.

Liberty's Edge

Had a moment pop up in a game where a PC was trying to pick a lock. COmbat was happening around the PC and a enemy cleric did a negative energy burst, doing minor damage to everyone around them, including the lock picker.

One of the players asked if there was a save/concentration type roll for the lock picker. Curious, we took a few minutes to check but could not find any. (I let the action pass, as the combat was winding down and I simply let the lock be picked.)

So, are there any RULES about concentration checks or something (perhaps added difficulty) when someone takes damage while trying to do a skill, like picking a lock?

Thanks.

Liberty's Edge

Not sure if it is a spoiler or not, but thought it best to be cautious.

What "shadowbeasts" are you using or planning on using?

Liberty's Edge

So, I have been toying with the idea of giving my players foster care of the NPC Children of Westcrown.

I have 5 players and would give them each 2 of the Children. (I would drop Mathalen, I don't care for that one.)

They would be responsible for playing them out, rolling for them (if needed) and general advancement of them. The story would follow their main characters, so unless there was a specific dramatic point for dice rolling for the Children of Westcrown, anything to do with them would be spoken out like normal.

This lets me worry less about trying to play out a dozen or so NPCs that could have a pretty strong impact on the PCs. They would have a more unique voice then me, me, me, me, etc.

The Children would also be nice back-up characters for the group in case one PC is out of commision (for whatever reason) or possibly dies.

I think it will be a fun RP challenge for all of us.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Liberty's Edge

So we started the COT AP this last weekend.

Each of the six players had a special encounter at the start in which they met Janiven, then they gathered together at her request the next day or so.

They had their dinner-meeting and then the Hellknights showed up, with the group following Janiven's lead into the sewer.

Janiven showed them the passage's secret markings and then left the group (with Morisimo) to lead some of the Hellknights on a merry chase.

The group had a scuffle with some Goblins, but dealt with them fairly enough.

It was then that they nearly ran into a group of Hellknights (an actual knight and a few armigers). Understanding that none of them could face an actual HK, they hide and tried to sneak away from them, but a batch of shriekers ended that tactic.

The group ran for a bit, with the HKs on their trail, but then found a room that had a sliding door that would block them from the HKs. Unfortunately, it was rusted.

For several rounds they attempted to lower the gate, as the HKs came closer. They fired several bolts to slow the HKs, too little effect. They did Luck bonus domain abilities on the strength using gate-closers and even prestidigitation to clean the rust off.

Just as the head HK came inot the room, the PCs managed to drop thegate and it slammed the HK down into the dank waters of the sewer, trapping him. That's when the halfling rogue went for the coup-de-gras and ended his sorry existence.

The group worked very hard to come up with a way to stop the HK without facing him head on, each coming up with a way to help their plan.

Of course...when Janiven hears of what they have done...she's not going to be too happy...

And the group is a wee bit nervous as to what happens when the Churcxh of Asmodeus does a speak with dead on the HK's body. (Their idea, not mine, but that's not to say they aren't right. muwhahaha)

Actualy, I might have the body of the HK being taken back along with Arael for the ambush (with the three Armigers that were with the HK in chains, walking behind his corpse's wagon). That would give them another opportunity to deal with that problem.

(Trying to post this again. Lost it the first two times.)

Are the following products in store now?

Pathfinder Adventure Path #25
Pathfinder Module: Crypt of the Everflame
Pathfinder Companion: Cheliax, Empire of Devils

Thanks.

Liberty's Edge

Over the last few days I have had three out of four of my last posts not go through. Don't know if anyone else is having that problem?

Liberty's Edge

Are the following products at the store yet? If so, when did they release?

a) Pathfinder Adventure Path #25: The Bastards of Erebus (Council of Thieves 1 of 6)
b) Pathfinder Chronicles: Legacy of Fire Map Folio
c) Pathfinder Module: Crypt of the Everflame (PFRPG)
d) GameMastery Map Pack: Town

Liberty's Edge

Okay, I need just a wee bit of clarification. First, look at this Campaign Trait.

Adopted: You were adopted and raised by someone not of your actual race, and raised in a society not your own. As a result, you picked up a race trait from your adoptive parents and society, and may immediately select a race trait from your adoptive parents’ race. Race traits can be found in Pathfinder Companion products—if you don’t have access to a selection of race traits, it’s best to simply pick a different social feat.

Where do I find the "Race Traits"? What companion products?

Do they mean the Racial Traits in the PFRPG, pages 21-27?

In this instance, one of the PCs wants to have his Half-Orc character being adopted by a Human (Chelaxian).

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Liberty's Edge

Is there any "spoiler-oriented" reason not to let players read the Westcrown section of #25?

I gave it a prelininary read last night and I didn't see anything, but I wanted to make sure.

I know it says for sure that there's a councuil of thieves, but it also says that only conspiracy buffs in the city believe it exists, so from a "character knowledge" standpoint that's covered. And what player is actually going to believe that there isn't a power guild of somekind anyways... not matter what the gm says... ;)

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Is there a way to NOT print the background on the PDFs, in this case that of #25, the Bastards of Erebus?

If not, Paizo, could you please offer non-background versions of the books?

I know they look nice, but they drain ink cartridges.

Thanks.

Liberty's Edge

Anyone got any good uses of the Harrow deck for CoT? It's a nice little product I would like to get more use out of.

Liberty's Edge

So, two PC and two NPCS (Urol and Skald) got Mummy Rot from the mummys in the tombs under the mountains, and having absolutly no way to counter it, the group is trying to race to Farshore before the characters turn to dust and die.

Their only chance is the use of Lesser Restoration to stave off the effects long enough to get to proper magical help.

Liberty's Edge

Our group likes to play with FUMBLES as well as CRITICALS. Any chance there's a Fumble Deck in the works?

Liberty's Edge

If the player's aren't forced to crash the Wyvern at the end of the "Sea Wyvern's Wake" and walk across the Island, what about HTBM are they going to miss from a plot stand point?

What items do they get or what things do they learn in HTBM that would seriously hurt them in the following adventures because they didn't wade through HTBM?

Thanks for your time in replying!

Liberty's Edge

So, the heroes BARELY defeated the Mother of All, but they do it. Good, glad to have that over with. Then, I review the next section and I immediately think to myself, "What's the point?" Really.

So, okay, the Captain gets to roll about three dozen Profession (Sailor) checks to see if (A) they can "stay on course" despite the fact that the book gives no suggestions as to what might happen should they actually go off course and, (B) is further made useless when the adventure has them crash NO MATTER WHAT they roll...despite the fact that they could have gone "way" of course with the previous plethora of dice rolls.

And. As for drama during the storm, the players saying, "I tie myself to the deck," rightly kills any need for dice rolls in the storm.

And. Then, as per written, the ship crashses...no matter what the Sailing checks might come up...and they make yet another useless roll to see if they "fall prone REF Save" despite the fact that there's absolutly no dramatic reason for them to make the roll.

So basically the last encoutner is a call for dozens of dice rolls, with little or no reason for them, only to force them to CRASH on the island no matter what they rolled in the first place.

So basically I told the players, "Okay, a few days after getting fished out of the sargossa flotsam, yet another storm hits the Wyvern, this one a powerful, near hurrican monster that tosses the storm something fierce. As the ship gets tossed and rolled about there's the sound of splintering wood and the ship halts to a jarring stop, sending all flying about the Wyvern. As you all stand up and collect yourselves you can hear the Captain bellowing orders to command the crew to get the ship free of some rocks. Suddenly, there's a roar off the port side of the slanted ship, that's obviously not the storm...Seems the Wyvern needs some heroes to defend her once again!"

One hour of useless dice rolling boiled down to a two-minute description leading the heroes to the next *dramatic* moment.

PAIZO, I am really sorry for sounding harsh, but you can do better then this! I really hope you guy reduce the call for USELESS rolls in your PATHFINDER books. Rolling the dice should be dramatic. Not because "We don't have a 'DC listing' on the page".

(Again, sorry for the rant, just really annoyed me.)

Liberty's Edge

So, they Lady Bard in the group visits Avner's horse daily. She loves horses, and it's a great break from the ship's tedium.

So when she's down there one day, one of Avner's servants is brushing the horse. After several minutes conversation, the servant carefully and queitly tells the Lady Bard that she needs to be careful around his lord, and tells her "the warning":

"You see m'Lady, my Lord, he's a jealous and powerful man, willing to match any insult, don't ya know. Once, he was to be married, to a right beautiful young woman, like yer'self, of some of the finest blood in the city. But one night, a few day's before their wedding, Avner caughts her having a daliance with a young adventurer-type. Well, me Lord Avner, he's right furious...and I'm not saying that he isn't right to be so...but what he did...

Well, it seems the adventurer and the Lady were truly in love for they fled the city together. But I know that's not so. You see, I overheard some things betwixt my Lord and a powerful arcanist he hired. I don't know what fell fate came down upon the adventurer, but for the Lady, well, my Lord had her changed, changed into this here horse that you visit everyday.

This way, as my Lord says, he gets to ride her anytime he wants." So, please, take care around my Lord, for your own good...I don't wish to be caring for two mares, My Lady.

Of course, this is not true, but the Player's bought it whole sale, because they WANT to hate him even more then they do already. The servant was Rowyn Kellani, disguised, messing with the PCs head at the time, hoping they might attack th Noble and get into trouble. Can't wait to see that play out.

Liberty's Edge

So, my group loves Skald. And, obviously hates Avner. I tired to play up the shadowy nature of Skald, but they just 'liked' him for some reason. Guess they saw through his 'sneaky bastard' facade.

So, when they were in Fort Blackwell, they got involved in that Redcap side thing and asked Skald to come help them. Killing redcaps seemed like a heroic thing, so he went with them.

After that fight, I decided that Skald now had enough EXP, figuring if the PCs are going to drag him around any more, he desperately needed to get another level under his belt to keep up with them.

So now he's a 4th level Ranger. At 4th level he gets a animal companion, I thinking I am going to have him take Avner's horse as the animal companion... (Avner will LOVE that.)

Liberty's Edge

Rowyn Kellani...Back from the dead and better then ever...if you call being reincarnated into a KOBOLD "better"...

Oh, and then there's the matter of the festering demon inside her...

So, in SWW, Kellani was discovered and killed. It was less then pretty.

But then the group did something I wasn't quite expecting. They took her to the shrine of Herionious to do three things:

1) Get a PC that had been killed by Kellani REINCARNATED. (He's a lizardfolk now)

2) Get Kellani a proper burial, more to keep anykind of undead possibilities then anything else. (One of the PCs is actually a Paladin of Heironious, he was not able to discern the fake shrine.)

3) Escort the Father there as a thank you for him healing a few of them, plus one of them is a paladin of heironious, remember.

So, the "Priests" at the Shrine greet the Father as expected. To their surprise the Paladin is going to stay at the temple (they won't touch him, as they know a Paladin is likely immune to "evil seeds").

They jump at the chance to help the group with the reincarnation (they also jump at the chance of implanting a seed into the reincarnated PC).

They also jump at the chance to sow more CHAOS by Reincarnating Kellani (she came back as a kobold!!!!) and maybe dropping a little extra seed into her!

Liberty's Edge

The Brotherhood Blockade encounter, Letter "D" on page 32, seems to have all the makings of the PCs being able to get yet another ship.

Anyone have this happen in their game?

Liberty's Edge

So in the Bullywug Gambit, Noble lady Kellani sends a assassin team after the PCs via the Worm festival. When they fail...the next mention of Kellani is when Rowyn herself tries to do something.

does anyone else see the noblelady not trying something else, like a better class of assassins then guys on stilts? I would think with her connections, the master of the Kellani family could afford to bring in the scarlet brotherhood.

So, assuming that the SB could be brought in, what is their tradermark? What would tell the PC and Players that this is a Brotherhood hit without the GM saying, "This is a Scarlet botherhood hit."

Any thoughts or ideas?

We use the Game Mechanics INIT cards.

James,

I was curious if maybe Paizo and Game Mechanics would be interested in joining forces and maybe a set of Game Mechanics INIT cards could be made up for STAP, so that GMs could print the sheets and have the various baddies all worked out on the oh-so-handy cards?

I would be happy to voounteer to help out if it could. (Since I am basically doing this anyways for my own use.)

Just a thought.

Liberty's Edge

Hey all. Thought it might be a good idea for folks to post side-quest ideas that they have used in orer to help provide other GMs with some ideas for games.

Title: "Slaver Pits"
When: Just after "There is No Honor"
Specifics: The heroes who cleared out the thieves' den are asked by the Dawn Council to go and check out a old temple not far from Blisterwall. It seems that the L-Dragons might have had some connection to it, and Rowyn *might* have escaped the city in that direction.

Heroes get to Blisterwall (decribed in Dragon 349) and are given a hippogriffon ride and dropped off in the jungle, to which they will walk the rest of the way to the temple. (The hippogriffon ride saves them 2-4 days of jungle travel.)

Group needs to get to temple, check it out. It's an old complex once under Hextor's faith. Inside are bullywugs, some kobold allies and a mess of Giant Ants. There's also a good number of slaves.

For the temple and such I used the old "A1" module "Slave Pits of the Undercity," replacing monsters with those more associated with 3.5 and STAP.

Hope that helps inspire.
