Male Human Cleric 1

I've been enjoying the game as well even if we aren't very far into things. The descriptions have been good, the idea sounds like fun and you've been pretty clear on what you are looking for. When replacing half the group it can be pretty hard to get things going again, but I have no problem trying to continue.

For critiques to try and help out: A map would be a great thing even if it is just a grid for a battlemat. Being able to see distances and flanking opportunities and whether we would be provoking or leaving ourselves open would be very useful.

Speed of player posting isn't something you have a lot of control over but if we are moving along at a decent pace and someone goes MiA temporarily it can be a good idea to briefly NPC them. Something that can help a lot with this is if we all give some of our standard tactics in our character profile, just saying things like 'Felix will normally move to heal any ally below half health or channel energy if 3 or more allies are hurt at all, excluding any enemies. When fighting he prefers his morningstar and staying close so he can use his touch of knowledge and learn all he can about an enemy he has not faced before.' Will give you a lot to work with.

With that sort of information you can set some sort of standard in place that after waiting a full day for a post from someone you'll post for them and we can keep going and they can hop back in the next post. It keeps the pace up and people focused. On the same idea, I think that it helps if you pose the responses to our actions as you can rather than waiting for all of our characters to be up, it will give us answers and an idea of how the battlefield is changing throughout the round, knowing if our target was killed by someone in front of us, ect.

All in all its been a good game so far though and I hope things revive.

I know the Hayman healed himself, I believe that Thorfinn is the only other one injured and it isn't too bad, right? Assuming that is accurate, I take the action below. If I am wrong and someone is reasonably hurt I will move up and heal them instead.

Felix dashes forward into the cave as quickly as possible, pressing as close behind the warriors as he can so he can see out through the cave mouth to see whatever the goblins are preparing, repeating his warning to the others. "They are chattering about some sort of cannon, keep on your guard friends. I may be able to slow down the shot for a second but be careful and at best I can only stymie them..."

Focusing through the cave mouth he watches for this canon, readying to forbid its use.

Move to get as close up behind the fighters as possible.

Standard action to ready the spell 'Forbid Action' when I see whatever this cannon is. Will cast it on the gunner, forbidding him from attacking if it looks like a weapon or casting if it looks like some sort of spell function. DC 14 or they will avoid the forbidden action for one round.

Most of his time with the more monstrous language has been in study rather than practice so it takes a second before what the creatures says seems to click in his head as he murmurs to himself. "Goblin... Canon?" Then suddenly he is yelling down the tunnel at the others. "Goblin Canon! They are firing something, maybe one of themselves, sounds like they have some sort of armament! Get some cover!"

Male Human Cleric 1

I was back with Nolin, so I am assuming I'm spending my action trying to get up to the entrance with everyone.

Felix comes running along somewhere behind Jeod, moving as quick through the small shoot and the entrance chamber as he can to reach the others as he hears combat begin. "Is everyone still alright? We found a prisoner!

Male Human Cleric 1

Just giving a little bump up.

Male Human Cleric 1

Thorfinn's suggestion is a great one for me, I tend to use google docs as a battlemap myself, you can also host images and text documents there as well for when you want to show us things.

If people have gmail accounts you can set permissions to let them log in and move their own characters, but if you open it anyone can see the file without having to log in.

Male Human Cleric 1

Felix gives a quick nod towards Nolin as soon as he see's him free. "I'm the one who keeps them from getting torn up, get your staff and join us, sounds like quite the skirmish!"

With that he is running off down the corridor, crawling through after Jeod, trying to make his way back towards the entrance quickly.

Male Human Cleric 1

Felix gives Jeod a quick nod "A captive? I'll cut him free, see if you can find his stuff and lets get to the others."

Felix will move to cut Nolin free with his dagger, hoping Jeod will find something to get the man in fighting condition before falling back after the others.

Not sure how long all this takes compared to the other group, so going to quiet down until the DM has us catch up.

Male Human Cleric 1

Once through the tunnel, Felix will look up towards the torchlight and give a 'psst' to catch Jeod's attention. "If you haven't found any danger we should fall back in case the others need help. One of the sneaky little things peeked his head in the entrance and then fell back, the rest gave chase."

Male Human Cleric 1

Felix glances back and forth between the hole the rogue crawled through and the rest of the party taking off after the goblin. Finally he sighs and says to the others "If there is a group of them hold them, I'll get our companion and be out to you..."

He then ducks into the crawlspace, squeezing his way through to find Jeod to warn him.

To be fair in skill checks you don't automatically succeed or fail with a 1 or 20, that only applies to attacks and saves.

In the 3.5 epic rules(and I believe unearthed arcana too) they had optional rules about alternate options for a 1 or 20 on a skillcheck but that is more for when you have such a high skill that it is impossible to fail things that there should at least be some chance of failure, or you are attempting things that require astronomical skill checks. When we are just running level 1 characters the normal range is probably pretty fine.

For the original question, I have no problem at all with you rolling skill checks that are reactive for us. Things like perception rolls or a lot of times knowledge checks we just automatically make.

The other option that I normally use in PbPs is taking advantage of spoilers. Putting a tag like 'Perception DC 13' with a spoiler below that has the information in it lets us roll our own checks without it taking an additional post, we just only look at the spoiler if it applies to us. Doing the same thing for unusual languages can help a lot too since only those who speak them look.

Male Human Cleric 1

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

Male Human Cleric 1

The knowledge domain ability doesn't require a roll, its based on my wisdom and my level. In my case I basically automatically act like I rolled a 19 on a check for them.

Male Human Cleric 1

Nodding his head a bit, Felix flashes the others a quick smile. "Indeed, you are all skilled warriors. With you at my side I can only imagine the things that we will be able to uncover."

When Thorfinn begins to clean his weapon he flashes a quick smile and dips down to one of the goblins, tearing away the cleanest bit of cloth he can find to polish the blood from his morningstar. As he does he pauses for a moment and gives a quick sigh, touching the creature and focusing his attention.

From my knowledge domain I can touch a creature and get a DC 19 knowledge check about that type of creature, so I figure that will give me all the basic info about goblins.

Male Human Cleric 1

Squatting near the hole, Felix waits for either an all clear or signs of struggle from the rogue on the other side. Hearing the mutter about the smell he nods his head rapidly in agreement, whispering back down the passage. "I know, right? It would almost be fascinating to study just how they manage to stink so bad if that wouldn't mean living among them... Probably much more fascinating just to read."

Also, is anyone still injured? I know that channel should have brought everyone to 'close enough' that its not worth any other spells, but I'm just trying to keep track of who is wounded.

Male Human Cleric 1

Fast is fine with me as well and let me also toss in and say I am glad everything is fine, Thorfinn. I've had probably more than my share of big medical issues over the last couple years and know how miserable it is. Hopefully cutting back on the salt will help.

Male Human Cleric 1

Felix motions to the few who had taken wounds to come closer. "Come near my friends, let me tend to your injuries before we face any more."

Closing his eyes to focus he brings out that power within him, channeling energy to heal any of the party who is hurt.

Channel: 1d6 ⇒ 4

Male Human Cleric 1

Status:

HP:9 AC:17 Conditions: Inspired(+1 to hit and damage)

Felix gives a quick glance around to his companions, seeing that none of them look overly injured he steps in again with his morningstar, taking a quick swipe at the nearest goblin, trying to bring it down before shifting into a better position to keep the creature's backs to Jeod.

To hit 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

Confirm 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Crit Damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Male Human Cleric 1

Was I able to get into a flanking position for Jeod, DM?

Male Human Cleric 1

I'm going to try and make that a bit easier for you Jeod. Being a mobile cleric who wants to stay near the front lines but isn't that powerful of a fighter, I'll be spending a lot of my actions getting in place to try and make sure you can flank.

Male Human Cleric 1

Just a note, you said they were shrieking in an alien tongue, but if they are speaking Goblin I do understand it.

Also, I think Uzian should be above me in initiative, we both got a 5 but he's a bit faster than I am. Doesn't particularly matter though with allies.

Status

HP:9/9 AC: 17 Conditions: Inspire Courage

Felix wrinkles his nose as the goblins come rushing forward, easing batting away its swipe with his shield. "That rush of excitement of discovery always seems to be paired with a foul smell doesn't it, gods to they stink..."

Swiping out with his morningstar, Felix calls out in the goblin's native tongue. "Your raiding is at an end, foul creatures!"

To hit 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

He then tries to maneuver around to get one of the creatures backs lined up with the rogue's blades.

If I can five foot step and be in position where the rogue could flank for a full round I will. Otherwise I'll take a move to get to such a spot so he can easily flank, provoking if necessary.

Male Human Cleric 1

Sorry guys, stealth isn't my strength. Lets see what I can do...

Stealth 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (17) - 4 = 13
Initiative 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Keeping his shield and morningstar at the ready, Felix creeps up just behind the others, staying close to the front line fighters in case they need any assistance.

Male Human Cleric 1

I believe the idea was for him to peek in from the entrance, using it as cover and we'd go from there. Doesn't make much sense to walk inside without looking first.

Male Human Cleric 1

Won't summon monster only last for 1 round right now?

Felix glances to the others, considering. "Rushing in definitely seems like it will put us in more danger than needed, and since it is my job to keep you all alive I'd prefer not to be handed extra work."

He flashes a smile at that, thinking. "Smoking them out may work, but the little buggers are rather fond of fire and low enough to the ground they may not choke too badly in a large cave. Plus until we know how many are in there, I don't know if we want to try and tackle them all at once. Taking them out in small groups may be a better plan, keeping them from swarming over us while our far more skilled combatants can cut them down."

"If we are going to scout however, I wouldn't move out of sight in case you get spotted. We can take it one room at a time, check the entrance from where we can see you and find out what you can gather. If its just one large chamber we might not have a choice but to hit them all. If it looks like it goes further, we could probably make some noise outside or the like and lure those in the first room to come to us when they check it out."

Male Human Cleric 1

Giving the bard an odd look with a raised brow, Felix gives a slight shake of his head. "I can't say that I ever took a turn down a wrong alley back home and ran across a head on a pike..."

He takes the time to strap his staff across his back, preparing his shield in one hand, his morningstar in the other. Checking over his daggers to make sure that they are in easy reach in case he needs something for range. The last comment by Hayman brings a slight smile to his face and he nods towards the others. "Especially goblins."

"Perhaps those of us who are more heavily geared should remain back where we can charge in and let the quiet ones sneak up and see if they can get a peak in the entrance?"

Goblins would be Knowledge: Nature, DM? If those are what we are expecting to run into I'd just spit out whatever facts I could about them, especially things like whether they are known to be trap makers, sneaky, group fighters, ect.

So we don't have to make an extra post, I don't mind if you ever roll those knowledge checks for me. Unless we are sneaking my char will always be passing along whatever he knows.

Male Human Cleric 1

Felix smiles warmly at the half-elf, even more when a drink is offered and he nods his head. "Why thank you, my friend. I must admit that my purse has gotten quite light of coin on the journey here. I greatly appreciate the drink. My name was Felix good sir, and what of yours?"

He pauses and takes the mug from the barmaid with a grateful nod, taking a long draw from it as if he were rather thirsty. "I have to admit that I haven't gotten a great grasp of this town, I am newly arrived here, chasing after some hints I picked up. Great things to see here! Great things!"

Male Human Cleric 1

Even with the gruff exchange between the rather large fighter and the much smaller bard, Felix doesn't seem to pay much attention to the argument. Instead his eyes remain focused on the map in the half-elf's hands.

Stepping away from where he had been leaning against the wall he moves across the room, stepping unconcerned between the two who seem to have switched from confrontation to ribald humor quite quickly, simply giving them a small nod as he passes.

Without warning, he draws out a quill and small pot of ink from his pouch, even in the clutter of of his bags he obviously knows just where that is at all times. Leaning over the rogue's shoulder, he brushes the point of the quill against his tongue and then dabs it into the ink, already moving to modify the map without waiting for permission, chattering cheerfully as he does.

"I think you'll find that there is a very useful copse of trees off the trail over here. I was walking down this way as I came into town and spotted some movement in the brush up here." He shifts to try and add this to the layout as well, working in tiny detail on the large scale map.

"With the sun like it was that was a pretty obvious place for an ambush and the trees gave great cover so I could keep an eye out. They were cottonwoods, the trees; not the bandits of course, and since those have a shallow root system you know that water won't be far beneath the soil if you need to find something to drink. Nor do I mention their shrub like low hanging leaves which provide such wonderful cover! All in all an excellent place to get out of sight and hunker down as long as you need to in order to keep an eye on the comings and goings of the road unseen."

As he says that he pauses for a moment and rubs his chin, considering. "Come to think of it, its probably lucky I didn't barrel straight into some bandits in that brush. It would have been a much better spot for them."

Shrugging his shoulders slightly he finally slows in his rapid lecturing and offers out a hand. "Bad manners to sketch and run, hm? Name is Felix. Nice to meet you."

Male Human Cleric 1

Hello everyone, just tossing out an introduction as well.

Felix is a seeker of lore and truth, an explorer and mapmaker. He's the sort of person who during combat will be more distracted coming up with whatever information he can about the creatures we face(and mentally noting anything new he was unaware of) than in paying thought to the danger itself. Between blows or spells he'll chime in with 'fun-facts' about the creatures that occasionally can be useful, and though he may come off as a bit of a know it all his intention is more to teach than to show off since he truly believes that knowledge should be shared.

Outside of combat he's likely to take any downtime sketching maps of the places that have been explored and making notes of any powers or tactics he saw creatures use or any interesting objects encountered.

In a more statistical way, much of his spell casting is going to be utility, trying to use his channeled energy for the bulk of healing(with selective channel to hopefully allow it without helping the enemy recover as well) though he of course will drop prepared spells to heal as needed.

For someone who wears decent armor, he's quick(one of his domains gives him +10ft movement) that should allow him to get to anyone who is hurt, and he is going to try and stay up nearer to the front of battle rather than hiding in the rear most fights, the better to observe his foes. While his knowledge skills aren't as nice as I'd like yet(thanks to the cleric's 2+ per level), he can at will touch a monster and hit a DC19 knowledge check's results, so hopefully I can help pick out enemy weaknesses if I am close. If we hit level 2 I should have at least 1 rank in every knowledge however which will help a lot too.

Depending on who we get as a fighter, I am probably going to be our noisy one(sorry Jeod) however in really specific circumstances I may be able to help with scouting. If you hear something, or suspect there is something on the other side of a door I can see what is on the other side of it 6/day as if I was casting clairvoyance.
