A place in the book that states which part?

Part 1 is under the athletics section in Skills, where the only requirement I'd a free hand.

Part 2 is under the definition of the Trip trait, under weapons

Part 2A is, as mentioned, a big, messy debate that relies on people reading the definition of the Attack trait differently, as it relates to skill actions that are attacks. There are whole threads on that.

Part 3 is in the definition if Flurry of blows, on the 2nd page if the monk entry. Fob allows you to make two strikes, normally. There is no general rule to allow combat maneuvers to be substituted for strikes.

If there's a more specific question, I can probably give you a quote and page number.

Thanks again sir

They have actually simplified combat maneuvers in 2e.

Anyone can attempt to trip someone else. It is a single action that has the Attack trait, which means is the multiple attack penalty will apply.

Normally, one could not attempt to trip another within a flurry of blows. But flurry of maneuvers allows one or both of the flurry of blows attacks to be replaced with a shove, disarm, or trip.

The action actually says you have a free hand. It does not say anything about not having a free hand. Yes, these can be done unarmed.

Some weapons have a trait called Trip or Shove that allows those weapons to be used to make the check. The advantage of using the a weapon could be reach and that attempt includes any plus that the weapon may have. This is also where you may have seen comment about being able to do the attempt even if you don't have a free hand.

Most combat maneuvers require an Athletics check vs the targets Reflex DC. The Reflex DC is the modifier plus 10.

Thanks man

1. If your hands are not full, you can trip without requiring a weapon trait. Whether or not you are a monk does not affect this.

2. If you have the Trip weapon trait on an unarmed attack, like the Wolf stance strike, you can apply any item bonus you have to unarmed attacks (as from magical handwraps) to your trip attempt.

2A. Having finesse as Trip both on a weapon or unarmed atrack may allow the use of DEX instead of STR on the athletics roll to trip. This is debated, and you should absolutely not assume it without speaking with your GM. If you search this forum, you'll find a few different threads of that argument.

3. Flurry of Blows normally only allows you to make strikes as part of the activity. Flurry of maneuvers allows you to use maneuvers instead of strikes with flurry of blows, specifically. It has nothing to do with making maneuvers unarmed.

Hey Hammer,

First, thanks for the thorough reply.

As a follow up, is there anywhere in the book(s) that states that? I am NOT doubting you at all. I just want to share it with my son.

Thanks again!

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

I am new to 2e and have a very basic, at least it seems so, question. It involves trip attempts with unarmed attacks. One area says you need a weapon with the ‘trip trait’. But it is also said that ‘if you don’t have a hand free’. In 1e for a monk it was just CMB/CMD. So, basically, can an unarmed monk make a trip attempt (leg sweep, hip toss, etc)? Or is it something that you can only do in say Wolf Stance.

To make it even more confusing is Flurry of Maneuvers says you can replace an attack of Flurry of Blows to make a trip, shove ot disarm. So when you get that maneuvers feat you can do all of it unarmed?

Please, like I said we’re new here with this. So if this an ignorant question I apologize ahead of time.

Thank you in advance.

Got it. Thanks to you guys a ton. I appreciate the help.

It just seemed odd that it would eat your reaction every turn in a significant fight.

You all have a great day and thanks again.

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

It may seem odd to be perplexed by a 1st level feat. But when I go to Cons or simple game days different GMs do not agree on how this ability can be utilized. I of course always go along with the current GM interpretation, as it is his world, but I would like some clarity from the Collective. If, for some reason, this is an obvious answer, I apologize for that and hopefully will not attract too much undue scorn.

The trigger says, "A creature targets you with an attack and you can see the attacker."

Requirements, not encumbered.

Resulting act, "You deftly dodge out of the way, gaining a +2 circumstance bonus to your AC against the triggering attack."

Now herein lies the rub. One side says that it works as follows:

GM: The Troll swings and gets a 22 to hit you. Does that connect?
Rogue: With nimble dodge it doesn't, I dodge out of the way at the last second."

Basically the player hears the number and then adjusts to Matrix the attack. Either for a whiff or narrowly avoiding a crit.

The other view:

GM: The troll swings at you
Rogue: I use nimble dodge before the attack as my reaction.
GM: The Troll rolls a 3 and misses you. (Using the Nimble Dodge becomes a waste because the Troll missed anyway-wasting the reaction).

In this circumstance the rogue must declare prior to knowing what the number may be to declare his reaction. The issue here is that in order to stay alive and avoid being hit by a creatures primary attack the rogue would declare this action prior to every swing at him. Thus using his reaction on every single turn he's attacked to avoid the 'big blow'. This methods precludes him from using any other reactions during any encounters.

I have now played under numerous GMs and have had it interpreted both ways. I never argue with whoever runs my games. I'm old school and it's just not to be done in my opinion.

I just really want some clarification. So I know how exactly this feat works.

Again, if this is an obvious answer, don't batter me please. I am just honestly curious.

Thank you all in advance.

Hello All-

My son and I just recently started playing in Starfinder. Three scenarios under our belts. But, when I went to create my character on this site it started me at #702 as opposed to #701. Is this because sessions have already been reported? Like making the character on here post playing doesn’t work? Is there a way to fix this?

I posted this originally as a Customer Service post but got no response. If this is the wrong location, I apologize.

Thank you in advance.

Hello All-

I have a quick question. I was recently at a Convention and, while playing, I wanted to use my Folio re-roll. The GM wanted to see it, so I happily obliged. But, here's the problem, he said I had to be 'actively using it' not just 'have it'. I never argue with GM's so i put it away, passed on the re-roll and said no more. Is that accurate, that I have to be currently using it? For a while there those were hard to find so I've just kept in the wrapping and held on to it and presented when necessary. Kinda like a collector's item.

Do you have to have it open and active on THAT character to use the re-roll? If so, does that mean you need one for every character you have?

I appreciate any and all feedback. Thank you in advance.

Liberty's Edge

Hey all, thanks for helping me clear that up. I really appreciate it.

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

I got my son into RPGs about 4 years ago and he is progressing nicely. It's an amazing experience to pass on the love for something that has been in my life, going strong for over thirty years.

On to the question.

We are starting a home campaign and he wants to play an aspiring Hellkinght Armiger. Well, when he hits 5th level he's gonna have to fight a Bearded Devil all by himself. The GM, who is a good friend of mine, has told me at that level he won't pull punches, which I totally approve of. I have done a ton of research on the Hellkinght Orders and the rules of their Test. Lot's a of good info in some of these source books, nice background flavor.

For the Test you can use any magic devices, weapons and receive buffs BEFORE it commences. In preparation, I'd like to give him some tactical advice. The Citadel Lictor will take up to an hour giving a detailed speech about the traditions of the Ritual. With that said buffs that are minutes per level will have long expired. The few that would be relevant (Magic Vestment or Shield Other) are beyond our caster's abilities. So assistance buffs are pretty much out.

Here is what I was going to suggest: he will have a sprig of snapleaf and several advantageous potions. As an immediate action break the snapleaf to become invisible, drink a potion and take a 5-step. Then, while the devil is searching take one, maybe two, more. Once he has some buffs in place, line it up and lay into him from there.

The potions I had in mind, and their order, were a more powerful Magic Vestment (+4 or +5), Haste and perhaps Heroism? If any of this is poorly envisioned or a bad idea please let me know. We can talk tactics all we want prior(in game one warrior asking another's advice, per se) but during the administering of the test, I cannot say a word to help.

I submitted an earlier thread to the rules forums about the rules of Stealth vs Perception during a 5-foot step while invisible.

I really appreciate all you guys's help with this.

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

This may be an obvious question, and apologize if it is.

If I became invisible and stepped away from an adjacent creature, would I have to make a Stealth check or, since it's such a minor action, are Stealth checks unneeded? I've played in quite a few games where the enemy went invisible and just 'wasn't in the same square anymore' without any perception checks made.

Also, I know moving is a +20 to Stealth and standing still is +40 but, if you are standing still, does drinking a potion counted as 'moving' or is it just traversing squares that meets that standard?

Thank you in Advance.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I really appreciate all of the input!

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

Last night I was playing my Unchained Monk and used my Abundant Step ability. After I stepped through I went to take my standard action. A friend of mine at the table insisted I could not do so because after to use Dem Door you can take not further action. I conceded, for the good of table time, but I believe I was right.

Now Dem Door says it is a standard to cast, you can take objets or others with you and can take no further actions.

Abundant Step says it acts ‘as if’ using a Dem Door but the Monk can take no one with him and it’s a Move Action.

I said I could take the step as my Move Action and then strike-he said it was confined to the rules on Dem Door.

If that was the case, why didn’t they just call it Dem Doot in the first place and why put in that it’s a ‘Move Action’ at all?

I appreciate everyone’s input and thank you all in advance.

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but it's the only one I thought fit the bill. I apologize in advance if I'm in the wrong spot.

Anyway, I'm working on my Unchained Barbarian and was trying to take the Abyssal Blood rage power but it's not offered in HeroLab. I own the prerequisite book (Advanced Class Guide) in the game portfolio. I can not understand why it's not working and could use some direction.

Thanks so much!

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

I recently posted on another area about this so it may be repetitive. I am traveling through Buffalo on Monday 10/30 early and was wondering if anyone had a connection to a Lodge member there that I can reach out to try an find a game to jump in. Thanks in advance and appreciate all your help.

Liberty's Edge

Greetings All!

I am a frequent traveler and when I get into wherever I find myself that day, I try and locate a scenario to jump in. I have a character that I use only for this purpose; he is well traveled indeed.

Anyway, I will be in Buffalo early on Saturday November 4th. I was hoping I could get some assistance in finding a contact that I could use in order to accomplish this act. Perhaps a Warhorn link.

I appreciate all the help and thank you in advance!

Liberty's Edge

Thanks Christopher! Found and purchased! I really appreciate it.

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

I have a quick odd question. I think this isn't the correct forum, I apologize.

As far as gambling goes in Golarion, is there a specific game(s) that are played? I'm folding some gambling into my game and was curious, flavor wise, if there was anything that was a hit in the taverns.

Thanks in advance!

Liberty's Edge

I had planned on using a regular mace with a shield since that the deity's chosen weapon.

Any guides in particular? I have amassed quite the collection of Paizo literature but I was curious if there was something specific you recommend.

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

I have always, over the decades, avoided magic wielding characters. But, since I have very few options left in doing something different to play with my son, who is new to RPGs, I have chosen to cross that forbidden line and play a cleric.

I was hoping, in the collective Wisdom of all, that I could receive some direction as far as traits and feats go. I am making a Human worshipper of Asmodeus (I assume that's allowed since ppl can play Hellknights, yes?). I want to lean more toward the battle impact side than the healing route. I'm willing to channel after a battle if needs be, but I would prefer to be a more forceful representative of my deity.

With that in mind I was thinking of taking Seeker as one trait for the perception but not sure about the second. I'm looking for any suggestions as far as feats go.

In advance I really appreciate any and all input.

Liberty's Edge

Ravingdork, is that information about side movement and stopping in another party member's square during your movement actually referenced somewhere in a resource? I had a veto on it when I last played recently.

Thanks again!

Liberty's Edge

Now THAT is awesome info! Thanks Ravingdork!

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

This is a follow up question to an earlier thread. Again, thanks for the help and direction.

Can you make a 'special attack' during a Spring Attack? Can you make a Disarm attempt? That only states you can do so in place of a melee attack.

Or, for that matter, can you preform a Vital Strike? Or is Spring Attack limited to a regular melee attack with no exceptions?

Thank you all very much

Liberty's Edge

Thank you Jeraa. I appreciate the clarification.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks Chess!

Do you know of any resource that states either that or otherwise?

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

This may be a simple question and, if it's painfully obvious, I apologize.

I was curious as how you can actually move during a Spring Attack. Particularly can you move up and to the side prior to moving backward? Like, you're 5 feet away from your target, can you take the initial move forward and then one square to the side prior to moving backwards? Basically, satisfying the 10 foot minimum movement by moving up and then taking a sidestep.

Cinematically I would see this as stepping up, deftly sidestepping to avoid the AOO, attacking and then jumping back. I know that this interpretation may be a stretch but I have been told several different things by several different people.

I really appreciate any and all input.

Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

Hello All. Before I start, I would like to pre-apologize if the answer to this is obvious.

I am playing a Hooded Champion Ranger Archetype, which awards the character with Swashbuckler like panache with one of abilities being Dead Aim. (Again, apologize if this is obvious) It allows you to make a single ranged touch attack.

With that said, I would like to take the feat Ranged Disarm from the Ranged Tactics Toolbox. When using this feat, if I am reading it correctly, you make a CMB check using your Dex as opposed to Str. My questions is, if I attempt a ranged disarm can I spend that point of panache to make it a ranged touch attack as opposed to a combat maneuver check?

Thank you in advance for any and all input.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-
I am wanting to find a trait to give my character the acrobatics skill, but I have found very little that will work for him. Any direction and / or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

I really do appreciate all the help. All this is some great advice.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, I see your point. I had already selected Seeker as my initial trait for just those reasons. I was leaning toward Sacred Touch because of the RP flavor but I guess, when I think about it, it is kind of weak. So you think the Will save bump is the way to go? I can see where that would be cool after I get those Cha bonuses to all saves.

You guys are the coolest. Thanks for all your help.

Liberty's Edge

Since this is my first shot at the class, I'm shooting for an honorable knight figure. I just re-read a bunch of older literature to try and get in the right mindset. I kind of like the Sacred Touch so I don't have to roll a heal check to stabilize a friend or defeated enemy. It would also save me from putting ranks in Heal in the first place, right? And, yes, this is for PFS.

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

I am making a Paladin and need some help deciding on what my second trait should be. Considering this is my first foray into the Knightly ranks, I thought I would look for some help here.

Here are the three I have narrowed my last choice down to:

Comparative Religion (+1 to Knowledge Religion checks)
Purity of Faith (+1 to Will saves)
Sacred Touch (Automatically stabilize a character by touch)

Now I am in no way attached to these. If anyone can give me some other option that would be a good fit for a Paladin, I'm open too any and all advice.

Thanks in Advance!

Liberty's Edge

What if I just have it done at a temple or something?

Also, can it simply be dispelled?

I aplogize if the last two questions are rather simple. I know absolutley nothing about spells.

Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

How much does the heightened version of Continual Flame cost? I think that would be epic to counteract deeper darkness.

Also, if it does carry over between scenarios, do I need a special notation from the GM running the game on my tracking or chronicle sheet?

Thanks Thrane! I really appreciate the help.

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-
Is it possible to have Continual Flame, or some similar permanent light spell, cast on an item in PFS that can be carried from scenario to scenario? If so,how much would it cost & can you use prestige to pay for it?
Thanks In Advance

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-
I recently received Boon #5 from Season 6. It allows you to purchase higher dollar items with Prestige than would normally available. Here is the breakdown (and for those who already know, I'm sorry):
2PP 1,000 gp or less
4PP 2,000 gp or less
6PP 3,500 gp or less
Now considering it doesn't take too long to accumulate 6PP for a starting character, is there a limit on what you can buy? Can I spend this on a potential pet? Specifically an egg that can be raised as a mount / companion with the Handle Animal skill?
If this is an obvious answer, I apologize. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Liberty's Edge

Hello again. Thanks to all for the direction. I read that 'Poisoner Rogues' can craft poisons as well as Alchemists. Did I read that wrong? Also, when crafting poisons am I limited to the poison list for PFS or can I craft other ones? I mean the ones on the list are for 'purchase', but it doesn't say you can't make others. Also, does anyone know all the poisons available in the books that are not listed in the main book? I mean like accepted books for PFS play.
Thanks in advance!

Liberty's Edge

Thanks Nefreet. When then would a character have time to 'craft poisons'? Can't really take game time to do it. Or is the crafting just useless? Like did I waste ranks on the Craft Alchemy skill? Is it my only recourse to buy them? I'd hate to think I put skill points into a skill that's only use is for day job checks.

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-
I have a character with the Poison Use ability. Along with the Craft (Alchemy) skill. I have a few questions about certain aspects of this ability.
Now I know that I cannot accidently poison myself upon application, but does poison use allow you to disregard the natural 1 roll on an attack or at creation?
Also, during a recent game, after killing a Giant King Cobra, I asked if using my Alchemy skill could I extract some of the poison from the creature to use on this scenario only. Is that able to be done and legal in PFS? Does that count as 'creation' with the same natural 1 risk if applicable?
Thanks in advance, I really appreciate any feedback.

Liberty's Edge

Very cool. From here on out, I'll affix a Snap Leaf somewhere close at hand.

I really appreciate the help.

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

This past weekend I attended an awesome convention in SC. Great time had by all. During one scenario I found one of my characters, actually my favorite of all time, in a rather precarious situation.

Before I ask my question I'd like to say that the GM was outstanding. From his preparation to the excellent roleplaying. This question is in no way a reflection on him. He was, in fact, one of the best that has ever run a table I was on.

For the first time, in and out of character, I found myself flying. Potion of Fly to be exact. So I was able to roleplay the scene very well, because I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. In trying to avoid a wall of fire I flew straight up. 100 feet straight up.

So here's when it went all wrong. You see, there was this really nasty spell caster on the opposite end of the cavern. Being the only character with a shot on closing on him away I went. Seeing me approach the caster decided to cast dispel magic.

His spell went off.

Down I fell.

100 feet.

So, I had been reduced to just 30 hit pts at this time and was plummeting toward the ground. The GM rolled the damage dice where all could see how bad it was gonna be. He was totally cool about it. So there I am staring 10d6 right in the face.

The Dice Gods were with me as he rolled exactly 30pts. So i ended up staggered not squished. Once I was able to breath again, a friend at the table asked me if I ever heard of a 'Snap Leaf'. Apparently you can break one, you temporarily gain the feather ability.

Now, finally, here's my question. If i was falling 100 feet, do I have the time to retrieve the snap leaf and use it before I go thud.

Maybe a spring-loaded wrist sheath? Or wear it like a necklace? Or other options. I have since invested in one, since the ring of feather fall is a little pricey at the moment.

I know I survived, but I never want to be in that situation again.

Again, the game itself was an absolute blast, even if I almost became a gnome shaped grease spot.

Thanks in advance!

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for the direction. I really appreciate it.
