Paladin Trait Choice Direction

Advice

Liberty's Edge

Hello All-

I am making a Paladin and need some help deciding on what my second trait should be. Considering this is my first foray into the Knightly ranks, I thought I would look for some help here.

Here are the three I have narrowed my last choice down to:

Comparative Religion (+1 to Knowledge Religion checks)
Purity of Faith (+1 to Will saves)
Sacred Touch (Automatically stabilize a character by touch)

Now I am in no way attached to these. If anyone can give me some other option that would be a good fit for a Paladin, I'm open too any and all advice.

Thanks in Advance!

Are you a paladin of any specific deity?

You may wish to consider the Player Companion, Champions of Purity. At low levels, Blessed Touch is helpful to you and your allies (+1 hp healed with each Lay on Hands) and Weapon of Peace is nice to not always kill the bad guys (-2 penalty for nonlethal melee attacks vs -4 normally).

It's a little front-loaded, but there's Chosen of Iomedae.

Alternatively, if you'd like a little Diplomacy boost, there's Regal Presence.

What are you trying to specialize in, if anything? Is this for PFS?

Liberty's Edge

Since this is my first shot at the class, I'm shooting for an honorable knight figure. I just re-read a bunch of older literature to try and get in the right mindset. I kind of like the Sacred Touch so I don't have to roll a heal check to stabilize a friend or defeated enemy. It would also save me from putting ranks in Heal in the first place, right? And, yes, this is for PFS.

If you're a Paladin of Torag, it's really hard to beat Defensive Strategist. Not only is it fluffy as all get out, but it's also a really strong trait on its own.

Sarenraen Paladins can get Blade of Mercy for nonlethal Paladin beatdowns.

The trait Seeker is actually probably one of the strongest traits for anybody who doesn't have Perception as a class skill, because it really hurts to suck at seeing/hearing/searching.

Of the three you picked, Sacred Touch is pretty awful. LoH, Channel or any of your Cure spells will stabilize somebody just fine, and heal them on top of that. The other two are a toss-up. Of the ones you listed, Comparative Religion is probably a better option, because having a strong Will save AND Divine Grace will likely mean you won't ever have to worry about Will saves.

Seeker is the business, if you've got the skill ranks. Even just one rank, plus the trait, will make you at least competent.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, I see your point. I had already selected Seeker as my initial trait for just those reasons. I was leaning toward Sacred Touch because of the RP flavor but I guess, when I think about it, it is kind of weak. So you think the Will save bump is the way to go? I can see where that would be cool after I get those Cha bonuses to all saves.

You guys are the coolest. Thanks for all your help.

Well, as you're going to be a Paladin of Iomadae, there's a few different options that are specific to her. Here's a few of the standouts.

Divine Warrior: As a paladin, you're going to have a fair share of weapon-buffing spells. While it doesn't give a huge amount of damage, an extra +1 is never something to entirely disregard. Plus, it shows that your god truly does favor you.

Purity of Faith: Extra Will never hurts, and you can well and truly tell Evil Outsiders where they can put their spells as well!

Magical Knack is good, but it does not become effective until fourth level, when you begin to cast spells. By the rules, your caster level is your paladin level - 3; this trait increases your caster level by 2.

Yeah, Magical Knack really is boss for Paladins. Getting an extra 2 rounds/minutes/etc. per use on buff spells is awesome.

Thirding Magical Knack, if you get to a level where you can cast spells it becomes really handy really quickly.

I recommend Blessed touch from Champions of purity.

I really do appreciate all the help. All this is some great advice.
