I agree with Sebastian - ditching the alignment restriction is a thing that has been very sorely needed by the paladin class for a long time. A few other classes are limited in one axis of alignment, but no other class is limited in both. In return, Paladins have neither the heavy combat capabilities of a Fighter nor the full-range healing and buffing powers of a Cleric.

Removing the alignment restriction presents interesting thematic options. Deity write-ups could include notes on each deity's paladins, what they can smite, whether they heal or hurt with a touch, whether they channel positive or negative energy, etc., lending flavor to the deity's clergy and properly positioning Clerics as 'church leaders,' while Paladins become closer to 'holy warriors' of any given god.

The Cavalier already exists as a class. The Paladin need not be solely the 'knight in shining armor,' since the Cavalier expressly fills that role. Allowing Paladins to break from the alignment restrictions, and instead, say, requiring that they be their deity's exact alignment, yields many new storytelling opportunities. Individual deities' paladins could be individually balanced, allowing Paladins to fulfill roles that otherwise would be filled by currently non-alignment-restricted classes.

Writeups of deities could also include straightforward oaths that any paladin of the deity is required to take and uphold, at the risk of losing his paladin powers.

All this to say, I think the River Warden represents a widening of the Paladin class that has been a long time coming. As a player who enjoys thematics far, far more than number-crunching, seeing the Paladin pattern stretched to include other oaths and virtues is very exciting for me. Thumbs-up, would vote again.

Also, as an aside, Kamau does not look like the avatar I've picked for the character. Unfortunately, nothing really fit the image of a Garundi warrior in the way I was hoping for, so I picked this one for the sole purpose of making my posts distinctive.

I'll be putting links to various visual aids for the character into his profile, so make sure to glance there. There's already a picture of the actor stand-in I've chosen to use, so that you can get a sense of what the character looks like.

Being as we didn't set any hard facts about their relationships, I think it likely that they know *of* one another, but don't necessarily know each other personally. Maybe they recognize each others' competence, have heard names passed around, that kind of thing?

It's unlikely that any of you would have a very long-standing relationship with Kamau as Albrekt and Ventar do, given how far from home Kamau is and the circumstances of his arrival. Still, he's been in Caliphas for at least eight months now, so there's time enough to have developed a professional relationship if at any point there was need of an assassin.

Either way, Kamau is a powerfully built Garundi man with a very distinctive dressing style. He'd be hard to miss, and it would take someone practically deaf not to have heard a comment about him at one point or another in the city.

Are there regional languages to be concerned about? It seems like there would be...

Kamau would definitely make use of some CLW pots.

Albrekt, btw, your total HP seems to be off.

14 CON = +2, x3 levels. 6.
3 more for three levels of favored class.
3d10 HD = 10 + 6 + 6, 22.

22 + 3 + 6 should be 31, not 29. Yes? :D

I suggested a rogue solely because it would connect up well to Kamau, if story-mixing is something you wanted. I'm a firm believer in the idea that you should do what would be fun for you first, and worry about 'group composition' second. Fatespinner is a very clever man - he'll put things together that make it interesting. There won't be any "Yup, that's a death trap, should've made a rogue, huh?" moments.

Joy wrote:
Is there any specific role the party is currently lacking?

Right now, the party lineup is:

An Infernal Sorcerer
A Cleric of Urgathoa (Summoning/controlling undead)
A Barbarian/Antipaladin (Fulfilling the role of tank and hate-machine)
A stealthy warrior-type (d10 HD, Full BAB)

What we really need most, in my opinion, would be a skill-heavy class. A rogue --> Assassin would find a good home here, I think.

Again, this is just my opinion, but I think the key to it would be to find a way for the character to actively value her companions. Not necessarily to love, or even like them, but certainly to "trust" them at least as far as things like combat are concerned. Ideally, I would like to see something like "friendship" generated amongst this group. We aren't all psychotic sociopaths (although... the Antipaladin of Rovagug? ...probably a psychotic sociopath. >.>) and if we all play "dark and scary uber-loners," we're gonna have a bad time.

The Cleric and Antipaladin have already found a story-niche. I'd be up for finding common story-ground for your character to bring you more fully into the group if you'd like. Alternately, if your character is more arcane-related, maybe the sorcerer is your better bet? :D

Welcome to the thread!

I do still think that we should all design characters with the basic intent of working together, whatever the reasons might be, if only because it'll be cool to see what "brothers in arms" looks like for the Evil side.

Perhaps, similar to Way of the Wicked, we share a collective persecution? Or maybe we all worked together, perhaps as part of a bigger group, to take down some force of good? In fact, both could work. First we were persecuted, than we gather together to destroy our persecuter.

Kamau isn't likely to have been persecuted. He's essentially on something like a vision quest. I realize I haven't put many details up so far, though.

Kamau Navarre is something like a bounty hunter, currently. He's currently hiding out in Caliphas due to a mission that went a little sideways on him. Kamau is disciplined and more than capable of just shrugging off small inconsistencies in the group dynamic, so long as people aren't actively trying to kill or convert him. What he's looking for right now is either a larger group to band with for the sake of improving his skills and testing himself, or (if the group happens to be going his way) to travel with and get back to somewhere more southerly.

As for the 'vision quest,' it's mostly to do with his theology and his belief in "destiny," which is probably better discerned in-game through conversation.

Just so that people aren't trying to build around me while I flip-flop, I figured I'd mention that I'm going to go ahead and stick with the Urban Ranger. It builds into what I want, and the 'favored community' thing has been handled in a way that I think satisfies the character concept.

Also, Black Dow: I hope I didn't come across as having misgivings about your Barbarian/AntiPaladin idea - I think it's great. With all the rest of the party seeming to tend toward the Lawful/Tyrannical/Disciplined side, it'd be cool to have someone attached to the group who's just barely keeping his overwhelming violence-urges in check, just to give the group some flavor. Not just "villain," but "monster!" :D

Monkeygod wrote:

Ex Lege, an Urban Ranger is a solid choice, but it could end up limiting you, if we don't stick to a city and I wouldn't want you to regret your choice later.

How about Inquisitor? That class has recently become a new favorite of mine, and nicely combines a fair amount of the combat effectiveness of the Ranger and the skills and all around usefulness of a Rogue.

Inquisitor would be cool for another angle on this particular character concept, but it deprioritizes certain stats in order to benefit from others, like Wisdom. What I have set up right now conforms much more readily with what I have in mind.

As for the Urban Ranger, I don't intend to stick with it for too long before I qualify for the PrC I'm heading to. The 'favored communities' thing doesn't really interest me, it's true, but no other class seems to numerically do what I want without suffering somewhere.

Ideally, I'd like something with a full BAB, d10 hitdie, and some stealth and technical skills. That seems to be the Urban Ranger. It'd be nice if I could dump 'favored community' for the original 'favored terrain,' yeah. That wouldn't really be fair to everyone else that has to pick up certain class-bits they might not necessarily like/need, though.

However, I do have an alternate character concept, if we want something a bit more rogue-y. I think it'd be kind of neat to see what an Inquisitor --> AssassinPrC looks like. The deity? Calistria. What would an Inquisitor of Calistria look like? Not just 'faithful,' but almost fanatically devoted to the idea of vengeance?

I'm just spinning ideas here, I don't want to turn the whole game upside down.

Male Human Gamer 4 / Philosopher 7

Looks like it's pretty balanced, yeah. I like the idea of the "rogue" being diffused into two different characters instead of just having a "designated skillmonkey." Also, the fact that our 'tank' is probably going to be a berserk mutilator type certainly changes the group's dynamic.

Lastly, wanted to mention that the fact that someone named "Black Dow" is playing a Barbarian/AntiPaladin makes me pretty happy. How perfect is that?

Male Human Gamer 4 / Philosopher 7

Hey, everyone. Thanks for having me. I realize that very few people will know who I am, so I'm glad for the chance to meet the community a bit more and get my hands dirty in a PbP.

What I'm really hoping for out of this group is the kind of evil that recognize common cause and actually have some comradeship. I don't expect us all to be super-buddy-buddy, but I think it'd be cool if, instead of the typical "evil game" where it's constant backstabbing and all-for-me, it's almost a "united front," where we see what evil looks like when it actually works together, and what happens when it presents a unified opposition to the constant cooperation that "good" usually musters.

I'm also not saying that no one should ever fly off the handle. I thought I heard the noise of a Rough Beast follower off in the distance somewhere, so I expect half of the fun is going to be the more disciplined characters just smirking and letting the berserker off his chain to go wreck house while they watch.

I think the idea of "magnificent/epic evil" is probably going to be a lot more fun and a lot more long-term workable. What do you guys think?

Kamau is going to be a pretty "disciplined" sort of evil, so it sounds like he'll get along reasonably well with the Hellknight and Cleric of Asmodeus. Kamau is shaping up to be an Urban Ranger, a tracker and headhunter. I'm not 100% sold on "Urban Ranger" as a required class/archetype, so if someone else wants to fill that particular role, I can do the concept more as a rogue. It sounds like we have plenty of face-smashing, but may be a little lacking in the skill department. Suggestions?

He's of Chelish descent, but his actual origin is a little more unusual than that. A little of the fun of the character is going to be in how close he plays things and how much of his communication is based on subtlety and nuance, so I don't want to drop complete stories right away.

Anyway, this is already shaping up to be pretty cool. Again, I'm somewhat new to PbPs and very new to Golarion, so if I sparked any ideas, please don't hesitate to post them. I'll take all the help I can get.

Still 1-3-2, but just three levels of Urban Ranger. I'll go with Human so that Tenro can play the Tiefling and we don't end up with two of them. :P

1-3-2. Rog2/Ftr1. Human, or perhaps Tiefling, depending on flavor and party composition.

Using Vital Strike is an attack action, which is a type of standard action.

That is what you have to work with.

What is proposed by the original post:

Round one:
>> Standard Action: Cast vampiric touch. Do not make free touch attack.
>> Move Action: Whatever.

Round Two:
>> Standard Action: Vital Strike (with vampiric touch as weapon-like spell)

If there is a reason you brought this up a second time that I missed, please explain why.

I'm not speaking for him, but it reads to me after your scenario as, "Round 2: You may spend your standard action to make an attack action using your vampiric strike, OR you may spend your standard action to make a Vital Strike."

Spells make you 'armed' for the purposes of threatening squares and attacks of opportunity, but they are not weapons. You cannot, for example, cast vampiric touch and then get your vampiric touch enchanted with a +1 keen effect, because it is not, itself, a weapon.

Vital strike doesn't say it can be combined with spells. Vampiric touch is a spell. Therefore you cannot combine them.

I'm afraid (as my posts have probably attested already) that I'm not keeping up with the game nearly as much as I used to, guys. The combination of a shift in real-life priorities following my move back to AZ, plus, honestly, the glacial pacing of *any* PbP game, have combined to just about kill my interest.

Ross, you've got an amazing gift for written narrative. I don't mean my withdrawal or my reference to game-pacing to be a slight to how you've conducted the game, and I'm pretty certain I'd be hanging on every session if it were an at-the-table thing. I just don't think I knew what I was signing up for when I picked up the game nearly a year ago.

I hope the game isn't affected too adversely by my departure, I realize that you've lost one character already, but at the same time, Taras has literally done just about *nothing,* mechanics-wise, and the party has seemed to be functional enough.

Take care, and thanks for putting up with me this whole way. At least it'll be one less person to sit around waiting for, right?

Also, he'd be looking to send along a message to the diplomatic corps there and let them know he's alright, since he hasn't come back since the riots occured.

Finally, the message would include a request for assistance in identifying the deck's properties since he doesn't want to trigger any kind of weird mojo off of it.

I think we're calling it dead, yeah. JackDaedalus and I have an upcoming move, so it'd be at least another two weeks before any kind of serious momentum got going, which basically means that it will have taken a year to actually "start," i.e. get past the Prologue and into meaningful story-bits.

Most of the mistakes are on my end, and ones that really haven't even been seen by the players. For one, having seen how long the prologue took to put together, I can see that I clearly did not scale this as a PbP game. I wrote a story that would work fine on a tabletop, but on message boards, I can easily see the arc I've written (not to mention the possibility of an entire 16-20 level story!) taking years, if not longer.

Taras fishes out four gold coins - inventory edited. As I understand it, gold is still a pretty big deal to "commoners" in Pathfinder, yeah?

Pathfinder doesn't change any assumptions about the value of money, as far as I'm aware. So gold is still a big deal. However, it is not as big a deal in Korvosa as it would be in a Hommlet-style rural area, due to the general tendency of cities to increase the cost of living.

For instance, 1 sp/day is listed as a wage for an unskilled laborer. This is sufficient for a peasant, because they can garden most of their own food and already have shelter. That would not be a living wage in Korvosa. So generally, I consider that 1 sp/day to be the necessary profit from an unskilled job after meeting the bare minimum of survival.

Further, my rule of thumb is that a gold piece is equivalent to about $40 or $50 in modern currency.

Okay. So, by that guess, then, considering that they could've just put the kids in the orphanage's charge and been on their merry way, Taras' dropping a $200 donation on the place isn't just a smack in the face, like giving a homeless guy four cents when he asks for change.

Good. That's the point that I wanted Taras to make, that's all.

The pace is glacial, but my worry is that it won't get better, and that the story I've written might very well exacerbate it. This scene we're in now would've been a five minute ordeal around a table, and has managed to be almost a month-long in PbP.

It's a hard balancing act, one that I really wasn't prepared for, despite being warned in advance that the games operate on geological time scales.

You can measure this game's pace in inches-per-year. I did not appropriately scale this game for a PbP, it's clear to me now.

I don't think anyone's so invested in this that they're going to die if others are going to pull out. Then again, I don't think the game takes up much of anyone's life anyway, so...

...I guess what I'm asking is if we still want to go through with the game. I'm game to keep going, but we haven't even actually gotten the party together yet.

Show of hands.

"It... it did," the gnome piped up in his slightly nasal voice. "The main computer core isn't connected, though. None of the terminals worked." He gestured for emphasis at a ripped open section of the wall with hastily sawn off outlets and ripped away cord piping, then at a computer terminal and monitor that lay in the corner, open in the back and clearly gutted for parts to make the gnome's crude laser.

Call it forty bucks the lot. The blankets are dark green. Fix-a-flat is very hard to find good info about online. I cannot find out when it was invented, and have never lived in a country where it is for sale. If you think it was around in 1979, it is...

1970 Chevy Impala, 4dr. V8 automatic $595. Sounds perfect. You got Marlene to get the car and put it in storage. She parked it in her garage instead. She told you about doing so, during a visit about two years ago. she visits about every two months or so, when she goes out to Dutchess County anyway to visit her ex husband. He found Jesus and gin at roughly the same time, and could never handle her past.

Your contact list is great. One change will be that your mafia contact is an associate, not a made man. He is an associate of the Bonanno crew, and is working hard to get a button. He doesn't like Bonanno underboss Carmine Galante, even thogh he technically reports to him. He hates that money goes up the chain, but he never sees much coming back down.

I will put up the first post tonight.

This looks like it's going to be a gorgeous story. I'm one of Fatey's RL friends, so I'm curious to see how this all turns out, and was going to Bookmark the IC thread and keep up. Is the thread already made?
