Amara Sontan wrote:

She looks at him exasperatedly, "This, she indicates the approaching council, is not right! Erec! do you not feel that something is off here?"

She looks pointedly at Erec, as if willing him to come out of the shadow of his family and older brother in particular.

Erec looks a bit confused at the girl's insistence. He looks worriedly to his brother.

"But...no, they are just bringing order. Right? They're just protecting the town..."

"I don't...I...what is going on? What is happening? I don't understand this."

"Neither do I, little brother, but… We’ll get to the bottom of this. Father wouldn’t steer us wrong. Corvina and her family have been troublesome for years and given yesterday’s incident this shouldn’t cause as much of a shock as the others insist. The council only wants what’s best for the town as a whole,” he assures his brother softly. Then, with a voice echoing his father’s, he adds ”Balance demands sacrifice.”

Erec frowns, but seems to calm after the wise words of his brother.

"I suppose you are right, but I had hoped to learn more about Corvina. Now I will never get to know her. It seems a shame that all this happened. So little we know about magic..."

Still a bit confused by the happenings of the events minutes ago, Erec speaks up.
"We probably have an two hours or so of daylight yet, Havak. We could still got to the *gulp* graveyard If you like."

Rook the crow wrote:

Rook turns an eye toward Erec, trying to measure his reluctance.

"Friend Erec, will you join us? Your insight has often been useful."

Erec winces slightly at the thought of facing one of the creatures. He remembers his previous inability to act, though and seems to find new resolve in proving himself useful. Whether helping Havak in his search, or helping the town face this strange threat, he would redeem himself.

"y-Yes, Rook. I will come along. I know I can help. Lead the way!"
and with that, he hurries off towards the forest, following closely behind Havak.

Havak wrote:
Havak responds, "In raids, different goblins go after different things. Havak tried to get the books before the others burned them. Poison glands can be cut out, if one knows where to look. Snake meat tastes better than rat or dog, maybe even better than horse. Havak wonders what magic snake meat tastes like.." Havak trails off for a second, thinking.

"Of course. If the creature was magical, It may be good for ingredients."

Then a bit more serious;
"Ah, yes. Raids. I suppose that makes sense."

Havak wrote:

In his rambling and lecture-like manner Havak says, "Yes. Goblins very....cliquish. Tribal. They don't like what is different, and Havak is blue instead of green; green is normal, blue is not. Plus Havak is smarter than other goblins. Havak was kicked out of the tribe when he was caught with books. Those aren't allowed. When Havak was there he was given last of everything, so he used this crossbow to hunt his own rats and dogs to eat. Hunger is a powerful learning tool."

After some thought, he adds, "Havak would have eaten that snake too, but Havak could tell Amara wanted it for reasons other than food. Havak wasn't really hungry either."

Smiling and watching attentively as they walk, Erec responds

"Yes, I'd heard that goblins were quite tribal. I guess I had only assumed that goblins, because of their stature, would be more accepting, wanting to use every available resource. Obviously, I was wrong. You would have indeed been a great asset to the tribe. If you don't mind my asking, if your former group didn't allow books, how did you come across one?"
He winces at the thought of eating the winged serpent.
"It's proably better that you didn't eat it, Havak. If it was poisonous, there's no telling if the flesh was safe." Then, pondering his own statement, "Or is there?"

"Oh good! Yes. Good. I'm very good at picking out details. You wont regret taking me along."
Erec straightened his posture, and becomes somewhat more animated. His tension eased some, but the intensity of purpose still remained.
The wind on the day began to pick up, and his plain brown tunic with sleeves a bit too long moved slightly in the brisk breeze.
"So, to the graveyard then."
He smiled a bit, and after a few minutes of walking, was in much better spirits.
With a small bit of shame still in his voice, he carefully asked about the fight.
"That was a strange creature. You were incredible in the fight, Havak. The way it snapped at you, and you snapped back! You must be quite confident. Did you face many obstacles when you lived with the other goblins?

Havak wrote:
"Havak will go to the graveyard before it gets dark. Need moonsilver for the smith's order." says Havak, before doing heading in the direction of the graveyard.

It was obvious that Erec was timid during the fight with the serpent. While Havak and Amara acted quickly in response to the threat presented with them, Erec only froze. Although the battle was over in less than a minute, it seemed like hours to the smaller boy. He would shiver with each exchange, and he even winced at Amara's cries of frustration over her shots going wide.

When it was over, and the goblin and the archer girl had approached Abram with their findings he slinked further away. He was clearly ashamed. Though he had never performed well in his mock combats with his father and brother, he had always thought that when it came down to it, he would be ready. Shocked and disappointing at his inability, he reddened with shame.
He noticed Havak break away, business as usual, unfazed by the strange creature. His admiration for the goblin only grew.
Approaching carefully, looking for some way, any way to make up for his earlier failure, he spoke.
"Um. Do you need any help? Perhaps I could help you search. I have a pretty good eye."
The look on his face was almost pleading, and his fists balled with tension, turning his knuckles white. The second part of his speach could may have only been to himself.
"Please, I know I can help"

Erec stands back behind the goblin and the girl silently watching. His gaze passes attentively as each party speaks. He is still. Noticing the stick still in his hair from his "training" exercise earlier, he quickly pulls it out and throws it on the ground behind him.

Havak wrote:
Havak eyes the human, "Do you know anyone around here that knows proper ways to look for certain stones in the graveyard without disturbing the dead? Havak is looking for certain stones there but could use assistance."

Erec thinks on the question for only a moment before answering.

"Well, I would certainly be willing to help you. Hm...I think the Sontan girl, Amara, has a good eye as well. And I suppose my brother would be helpful to do the heavy lifting." He considers the nature of the request.
Certain stones, you say. In the graveyard. Eh. Well, if it must be done." He seems a bit less excited now, and is clearly apprehensive about the graveyard, but with an unconscious stomp of his foot, seems to set himself to the task.
"Garrett should be by shortly. Perhaps then we can collect Amara and be off?"

Inside the house, Johnas Wiggs continues to make a racket, his curses muffled throught the wooden walls.

"I see", Erec said, somewhat disheartened. "What is this project you're working on? Are you adding anything to the mash/tea mixture that has interesting properties? He seemed a bit more excited at the prospect of hearing Havak talk about the alchemy that he was so gifted at. "Perhaps you found an additive, or have included something to add a bit of flare to the concoction?
Then, catching himself in realization,
"Or perhaps you're talking of a different project. With...eh...the blonde one...er..oh, yes! Elarya! Is that it? What could it be that has you so...er...extra serious?

Erec arrived in front of the house that Johnas and Havak shared, still clutching his sensetive jaw. Still seing the goblin outside, working his art, he waved, and a muffled "hello" came from his lips.
The boy, curiously enough, had taken a liking to Havak quite quickly. Unlike his brother, Erec was a reader, and would latch on to any writen word he could find. Sometimes, Havak was the only source of that. Although Erec didn't drink, he would sometimes spend hours listeing to the goblin and his thoughts on magical theory, and occasionally, he would even offer his own theories.

After a bit of wincing, Erec smiled genuinely.
"What are you up to today? Need help with anything?"
He paused for a moment, and looked back towards the Snow house, looking a bit more excited then.
"Oh, and if you've got some time later, I think I found an interesting interaction between lunar waveforms and auro-cognitive motion. I have my scroll back at the house, if you could look it over."
Then with a barely tangible bit of bitterness,
...um, and Garrett will be by as well."

Erec struggled to right himself, more burdened by the weight of his the ill fitting chain shirt than he had expected. He forced a grin through gritted teeth.
"Yes, brother. One day we'll find something that works."
His jaw was swollen and red, the last strike of his father's spear had caught him flat, but quite squarely. He brushed some dirt from his eyes with a ragged sleeve. He seemed small in almost anything he wore, not only was he skinny, he was short. Some years ago, the other children had started to call him a halfling, but a few stern looks from Garrett ended that quickly enough. Although Erec shared facial features with his brother, the similarities stopped there.
His eyes were an unremarkable grey and his hair, ashen colored, a paler version than his mothers. Currently it was tangled and sweaty, with a humorous bit in the back, where a twig stuck out at an odd angle.
Finally getting to his feet, he leaned a bit on his older brother, suddenly overcome with a bit of dizziness. He shook it off quickly though, and nodded that he was alright.
"Let's get some water, my throat is as dry as old man Higg's jokes." He chuckled a bit at his own joke. "Speaking of Johnas, I wonder what the old man and Havak are up to today?
