Dancing Wind has taken your second point, for the first, the PDF will be purchasable seperately, and for cheaper than the book, so I would recommend you get the sketch cover versions from your LGS and use the planned option to skip the subscription copies and just buy the PDFs when available in November.

Especially in the first book of Skull & Shackles...

online at GenCon. 1-99 is being held until the next major physical convention, as it is a Grand Convocation style thing that only works in the flesh.

you can’t yourself, but you can flag it for the staff to deal with it x use the ‘flag’ option at the top, and choose a flag - probably breaks other guidelines. This will highlight into the team, who will read what is here, and probably delete the thread.

Sure, thanks... I actually gained that impression myself since I wrote that comment and looked into their communications a bit more, it looks like they are going to base it on the code of the existing Turn Based Mod (working with it's author).

Anyhow, I realistically see them having as much or more success by using same mechanical system (just integrating the Turn Based Mod in core) and spending the budget on just getting the game content polished (which seems the main complaint of Kingmaker CRPG in first year or so). I guess I would just hope that if they ever do future game, based off 2E ruleset, that they approach basic game dynamic differently and go full turn and grid-based (which in many ways simplifies tasks like AI and realtime performance, as well as tightens interface). Really even pure turn-based system can include much of benefits of semi-realtime AI by showing "default" AI actions (themselves adjustable e.g. autocast function) which one can "approve"/activate with just one click, while not interfering with designating actions individually if desired.

Then the bar is raised for AI and everything to really play well using the advantages of turn based. Just the AI can really be tuned to be more creature and encounter specific, whether defaulting to buffs in not in full attack range, or even moving/withdrawing towards other monsters it knows are close by (rather than allow itself to be ambushed in losing 1 vs many fight). I get impression that rarely happens now, with encounters largely defined by location/creature stats and generic "tactics". Without assumption AI must function within realtime, there should be plenty of room for more specific tactical AI branches, which leads to more interesting variable play instead of depending on over-tuned numbers to approximate a challenge.

EDIT: BTW, since I'm considering dropping TBM when I get back into game, do you know if the AI handles Power Attack automatically? Something like Full Attack -> Power Attack -> Charge priority makes sense, but I'm...

Definitely agree it would be better if they built with Turn based mechanics involved.

In normal play, Power attack is a button you have to turn on or off, and charge acts like a spell in that you select it and then your target, I don't think the AI uses it by default.

Honestly I'm not sure why they didn't go with grid system from the beginning, considering desire to use TT rules.
Seems like it would also simplify some AI pathfinding and other mechanics to have an explicit grid system.
It sounds like they are going at least primary turn-based in next game, so hopefully AI is better adapted for it.

Office of expectations management - they're not going primarily going turn based, it will still be balanced around Real-Time with Pause, just giving Turn Based as an option.

I know of people who have made a business of printing the maps out on paper, like you said and selling them to the interested.

They charged about $60 for all maps in one adventure path issue and there were quite a few people who paid them that.
For the record, it's a breach of copyright laws to simply print out the maps and sell them (just in case anyone reads that and thinks it sounds like a viable business model).

I am not sure that is always the case.

Both the person who photocopied and printed out the the maps in a copyshop and the person who paid them owned print copies of the adventure path issues in question.
They also were player & gamemaster in the same rpg group initially.

You are allowed to photocopy stuff you own for your own personal use, aren't you?

It is another thing if you do that for a living/to make a profit, of course.

Selling something you have copied is pretty much the definition of not for your own personal use.

Because there's a market for one-off adventures.

Also 5th level is when the module starts, it does not mean that the adventure is all at that level, you may well level up within the book (you may not, I don't know, but adventures have always only had their first level mentioned, whatever length they are)

Okay 450 cards are a lot (there are 410 different creatures in the Bestiary), but i feel these should have been split up into the low level monsters & high level ones, like D&D did (0-5 $25 & 6-16 $16), because at this price point it's gonna scare away beginners who want to try out low level play.

Still, i will buy it.
How big is 5 x 8?

In addition to the concerns there, I've just noticed that Pathfinder Society Scenario #1-00: Origin of the Open Road is now available, and is now showing up in the PFS subscription as 'this month's' - is this going to be granted as part of the subscription, or do I need to buy it separately?

Are the two bonfires fitted with a LED?

They really look like there is the option to light them up.

I really have to say that this is THE goblinoid set, never have there been so many in one offering.
I count 5 different goblins (6 with the alternate Paint version),
3 bugbears (+1 alternate) &
3 hobgoblins (+ 1 alternate).
In addition to at least three orcs (+ 2 alternate versions).

That makes for a dozen different monstrous humanoids (the alternate weapon versions replace the dressings) out of 44 minis in the set, which is quite a lot.

I am not sure about the pose of the Pteranodon being a good one for use in a battle, it looks more like it is in "flight-mode".
An open maw and broader gliding wings would maybe be better, but i am glad that we get this creature .

We now know 30 of the 44 minis in this set plus two of the (six?) alternate weapon sculpts.

On the Pteranodon, I think it's more combatty that one with the wings open - it looks like it has folded it's wings and is diving in on the party...

In relation to future Bestiaries, Erik did say that this was an experimental product, and expensive, so they'll be reviewing the reception to see what future products are made in this style.

So at first level my Fighter can hit with a Longsword +9 to hit?

I cant find this in the book, just trying to wrap my head around character creation.

It's the same system all over the game - the aim is that you just need to learn in once and apply it everywhere.

As I said, its call back to 1e Gamemastery book where Karzoug was sitting on throne with dragon behind him(he was also dead when that book was released :p)

Its taking bit more creative liberties though since gamemastery cover was pretty much inspired by the RotR while this one is more inspired by Gamemastery cover than final battle with Alaznist

I’ve just remembered- when the GMG came out, the version of the Karzoug fight was the 3.5 version, where I don’t believe he had a dragon friend. When it was compiled, he gained the dragon, retroactively making the cover accurate!

So, if we assume that any new class will undergo a public playtest, here is what would be required for any new classes to be included in Kingmaker for PF2:

    1) At Gen Con, a new book in the Rulebook line is announced for Spring 2020, with a playtest to begin this fall (probably in September).

    2) Said playtest includes the desired new classes.

Then the playtest could be carried out in time for a new rulebook to be released in April, and the folks creating the PF2 version of Kingmaker will barely have time to get it into their fall 2020 release.

If we don't hear anything about new classes at Gen Con, we will have to assume that any magus, inquisitor, or other non-core class will be approximated with material available in the books that we already know about.

I would expect any book with a Playtest to have to be the Gencon release, I’d also expect a big new class book to be a Gencon book.

I don’t think that stops Legendary meeting the late 2020 deadline for Kingmaker though - they’d be shared in and have access to the classes as they are tested and completed off to the printers, and will have a few months to apply the final version- with the Gencon Book coming out late July, and Kingmaker November/December, and equivalent printing deadlines for the two, that’s more than enough time.

At least that is the way I have always done it.

Yes, the obvious and natural way to do it - this I understand (completely and immediately)!

The other reply and the quoted rulebook text, unfortunately, seems completely detached from common sense :(

Apologies if anyone is offended. I just do not understand. Everything will hopefully be resolved once I get to read the rules for myself!

The quoted rules aren't covering a party of 4 and a party of 6 fighting 6 creatures. They're doing it the other way around. If an adventure has 6 creatures, totalling 120 xp, that's what 4 PCs should face. If you have 6 PCs, then for this encounter, they should face 180 XPs worth of creatures, so 9 of these creatures. In this way each PC gets the same 30 xp for the fight.

The reason for this is that because your 6 PCs have more actions per round, the 6 opponents are less effective, and you should be balancing by adding more opponents, not reducing the XP gain. This way also means that the two parties should level up in the adventure are a more similar point, so the adventure can throw higher level and thus higher challenge opponents at the same time.

The books are under publisher’s embargo until 1 August, so nobody should be getting them in your hands before that date (shipping time variability allows some leeway, and Paizo’s own shipping practice is why some of us have them already). Hrm, I got the shipping notice, but the PDF isn't available for download. What gives?

I'm pretty sure this is a joke. XD

    ... right?

It is not. PDFs for Second Edition products will become available on August 1. See the thread linked by Franz above.
Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. I was actually referring to him expecting the pdfs earlier as a joke. I mean, Paizo wouldn't put their new product before the release.

This is the first ever volume of the AP where they have done this - I believe the only book that they’ve done this for in the past is the 1st ed core book.

So it’s not an unreasonable query.

(I daresay that there's also a perceived qualitative difference in that it's a whole new game rather than just a new adventure/sourcebook/supplement - I'm pretty sure they did the same when the PF1 CRB came out, so it's consistent with that).

It is, in fact, exactly what happened. PDFs went live the first day of GenCon, and the website was down all GenCon weekend so those of us whose shipments hadn't arrived yet (me) couldn't even get our downloads of the shiny new PFRPG CRB.

Of course, since then, Paizo has had the Playtest release run like clockwork, with no downtime, so I am more sanguine about being able to download the PDFs August 1st if my physical shipment hasn't gotten here by then.

There was also the fun of trying to order the pdf for non subscribers as I was then, when the shipping costs of getting a book the size of the CRB was beyond me...

Will this be openly available on July 31st / August 1st or is this going to be restricted to conventions? Asking since this one says unavailable while the others are listed as being available on one of those dates.

    Thanks!

it’s also not listed in the list of scenarios in the PFS subscription, so i’m reasonably certain it’s either convention or star locked.

Just curiosity, as I have already preordered the core rulebook and the bestiary from my FLGS.

Will Paizo be providing PDF copies of the CRB as well when you purchase a hard copy? Or is that for subs only?

    Thanks!

Sub only. They want to give a bonus to subs, and there's not a lot of things they can give. (and other reasons, but that's the one I remember. :P)

Pretty sure there was also a thing about reselling and stuff, but don't quote me on that

The other reason is that they’ve never found a secure enough method to link the store purchase to giving the PDF.
